TheEnergyCentrefocusesonu�lisingitsopportunis�csiteinthecentreofthe AlbertDocks,ahotspotforresidentsandtouristsofLiverpool,toprovidecleanand sustainableenergytorestaurantsandbarsinthelocalareawhilstalsobeinga communityspacetoprovideworkshopsaboutcleanenergyanditsimportance today.

Withcommunityworkshops,exhibi�onspaces,courtyardsea�ngareawitha foodhalltooandofcoursetworoomsfortheheatpumpsandenergyopera�ons, thebuildingaimedtobalancebothprac�calitywithimposingandeye-catching aesthe�cstoa�ractanyoneandeveryonetolearnaboutwatersourceheatpumps.

TheprojectalsoaimedtofollowtheRIBAChallenge2030,addressingreallife issueswithinthearchitectureindustrieswhichfirmsna�onwidearerequiredto address.Materialsandtheircarbonemissionswerealsocarefullyaddressed,with thebuildingabletopresentitsprospectedenergyoutputsandcarbonefficiency calculatedbasedonthequan�tyandsizeoftheheatpumpsaswellasthe materialschosenfortheconstruc�onofthebuilding.

Lookingtothefuture,‘DataDrivenArchitecture’hasbecomeaterm where dataiscollectedtocontrolandmaintainthebuildinga�er construc�on. Itcanconsistoftrafficcontrol,wheredependingon howac�vethebuildingisatcertain�mes,theairconmay automa�callybeswitchedononce enoughdataiscollectedtoknow themostpopular�mespeoplecomein.

Thismakesthespacecomfortableassoonaspeoplewalkinthe door.This datastandardisa�oncanalsomeanthataccesskeycards unlockcertain rooms.Forexample,ifsomeonebooksthe communityworkshop,amemberofstaffandstaffonlyisableto turnonthelightsetcwiththeirkeycard, meaningtheycannotbe le�onuna�ended,was�ngelectricity.

Toshowcasethistothepublicandthosewhousethespace,the server roomswillbeabletoconnecttomonitorsintheupstairs lobbyanddisplay currentenergyconsump�onandrequirementsof thebuilding.

Thesite for this theatresatnext to thewater of the Albert Docks,whichprompted the ideato usethis viewand makethis elevationa‘theatre’of sorts, with people(the audience)beingableto lookout attheviews(the performance/stage). Thisledto theincep�on ofhavingthree theatresin the building, beingthe mainauditorium, the mainstaircasewhich actsasthe theatreof the dockside,andfinally the bar. Thebaris wherethe audience spendtheintervals of the mainshowingsaswell aswherethe director of the theatreperformancesconductsa‘hot seat’ sessionwith theaudience,offering the opportunity to discussthe show’sideasand aimsand the performance in general.

Withthesitebeingrightbythewater,itisimpera�vethat peoplecanaccessthebuildingbyboat.Itisamissed opportunityifthisisn’taccomplished,andwillbeahuge attrac�onfactortothebuilding,beingafeaturewhich many buildingsinLiverpoolaren’tprivilegedenoughto even havetheopportunityofdoing. Acommonfeatureofmanybuildingstoday,especially entertainmentvenues,isasocialmediafactor.Thiscould rangefromasculpture/statuewhichsitsoutsideforpeople totakepictureswithorevenaneventwhichtakesplacein thetheatre,whichpeoplecanshareacrosssocialmedia givingthebuildingastandoutreasonforpeopletovisit.

Ofcourse,itiscri�calthatthetheatreworkseffec�vely, withop�malacous�csandsightlinesbeingamust.The building’sprimarypurposeisthetheatreandsoitis impera�vethatthisworkssufficiently.Theaimfora performing theatreisareverbera�on�meof1.2seconds, butanything between1-1.4secondsisadequate.

BringingtheOutsideIn

Aninteres�ngfeatureofthistheatrecouldbetoalmost exposethebackstagesomehow,togiveaninsightinto the performanceforthosewhoarepassingby.Thiscould promptmorepeopleto findaninterestintotheshowson andconsequentlyendupbuying�cketsforthemselves, boos�ngbusiness.

Theproject briefwasto decorate aninterior which focusedon mentalhealth and wellbeing. Weasa teamworked to create a‘serenity’roomwhere we tried to immersethe employeesin apeaceful and calmingenvironment,taking direct inspiration from arain-forest. Thecolourgreenwasprominent throughout the designiterations dueto its link to‘serenity’.
