ew Vision Projects was founded by Brandon Smith and Danny Christian. The South Delta raised entrepreneurs are both builders and carpenters by trade and in 2010 they joined ventures to become what would soon be one of the most recognized names in town when it comes to building and renovating. In one of their first years in business, alongside longtime friend and designer, Sarah Gallop, they gained notice in the community when they built, and lotteried off, a 2 story playhouse to raise money for the Delta Hospital. Nearly every year since 2011, NVP has been recognized as South Deltas favorite choice when it comes to home renovations. They have also won multiple Georgie and Ovation awards for their recent work, as well, they have been a part of HGTV’s hit shows Game of Homes and Worst 2 First. In 2017, NVP expanded their territory up to the Okanagan and are now also building houses in wine country! Smith volunteers his time to local organizations, working with groups of young entrepreneurs to help them shape businesses of their own. When asked what made New Vision Projects so successful, Smith laid it out as simple as could be. “Hard Work and Good Beer” he said. “Good Beer”, spelled GDBEER, is an acronym for the companies core values. “When Danny and I set out on a path to start a company, we talked at length about our vision for the company and how we wanted to be recognized. It started with our values.” Genuinely care for people Deliver what you promise Be loyal Exceed expectations Embrace the journey Realize you full potential

The New Vision Team

These are the values that we live by, operate on, and when it comes to hiring our staff, these values are the first things that are listed at the top of their agreements. We only look to hire incredible people and surround ourselves with people that live by the same values. “The thing that I am absolutely the most proud of when it comes to the success of NVP, is the team that we have. We wouldn’t be New Vision Projects without them”

Sean McGill and wife Erin with daughters Kheya (left) and Taylin.

Sean McGill has strong ties to city but it’s family that always comes first one of the biggest challenges,” he says. His wife Erin, daughters Taylin and Kheya, as well as dog Corona, are always top of mind. Things were challenging when Taylin, now in Grade 12, had a major health crisis, something McGill says puts everything in perspective. “I went through university, graduated and worked on my accounting designation and that’s when Taylin got quite sick, so being close to home was very important to me. It doesn’t matter about the job, my family always comes first and while she was sick, I wasn’t looking for another. I was with the city and the next thing you know, 10 years later, you’re still there,” he reflects. “I’ve always enjoyed working for the city and once I committed to stay, I absolutely After three decades at city hall, Sean McGill was named Delta’s city manager late last year. knew my goals and my goal was always to be and Harvie, the longtime former city manager, city manager at some point. That’s the nature has been a strong one, but he’s also been of my personality, I’m always looking for the fortunate to have worked with supportive next step.” councils and city staffers. As a newborn, Taylin was diagnosed with “There’s a lot going on. You have all these salmonella bacterial meningitis, a very rare aspirations when you get there of all the things and serious infection in the brain. It caused you’re going to do and change, but it takes swelling that led to severe seizures. By age time. So managing my own expectations is PHOTO BY JIM KINNEAR

e’s come a long way as an employee of the City of Delta, but for Sean McGill it’s always going to be all about family. Born and raised in Ladner, and now residing in Tsawwassen, McGill late last year was named Delta’s city manager, the top bureaucrat at city hall. Having done the role on a fill-in basis with several other senior managers before his appointment, McGill effectively replaces his boss, Mayor George Harvie. McGill’s journey has been a remarkable one as his first job with the city came over three decades ago teaching summer Tiny Tots soccer for the parks and recreation department while still in high school. Since then, he’s worked his way up through several departments, having worked jobs as diverse as a labourer installing sewer pipes to taxation manager and financial analyst. His most recent job title was director of corporate services. He managed to earn a couple of degrees along the way. McGill laughs that he’s done almost every conceivable job, but that, as well as living here his entire life, gives him a much greater insight into the city. “I believe it’s a privilege to work in a place where you grew up and then you see the changes that you’re part of. I have lots of family and friends in the community, so I love that aspect. But, of course, it’s challenging. It’s a big organization. It’s a good-sized city with lots of challenges.” He’s responsible for the overall management of the City of Delta’s operations and oversees a budget of $328 million. His role is to also provide leadership and guidance for approximately 1,500 employees. A city news release when he was hired explained that McGill has focused on building strong relationships with his colleagues and creating a positive working environment, and that his history of success at all levels of the organization provides a unique perspective into the challenges facing Delta. He says the relationship between himself

seven, Taylin had endured 14 brain surgeries. Despite all that, her positive, energetic attitude has not wavered, and her parents feel strongly about giving back to the hospital that saved their daughter’s life. Taylin was selected as the 2017 Children’s Miracle Network Champion Child ambassador for BC Children’s Hospital, embarking on a tour to share their story of courage. “Anyone who spends any time around me will know family is super important and it’s about the quality time you get to spend… The worst thing that’s ever happened to this family is what Taylin has gone through but it puts things into perspective. I think as a family we have good perspective and BC Children’s Hospital and (BC Children’s) Hospital Foundation are a huge part of our lives and we commit a lot of time to that. But it also helps me in my job because it can be very stressful, but when you go through some of that stuff it gives you that perspective.” The Vancouver Whitecaps have also formed a close relationship with the family, naming Taylin the club’s inaugural Kid Captain, and the family was also special guests of the Vancouver Canucks through Air Canada Fan Flight. Her proud dad notes Kheya, inspired by Taylin’s courage, is training for a career in medicine, hoping to eventually become a doctor working with children with traumatic brain conditions and injuries. Kheya spent the last two summers doing research at BC Children’s Hospital’s neurosurgical department. Admitting he’s always been a jock, having played competitive level soccer and baseball in his younger days, and still playing and now coaching, he proudly showed some of the signed memorabilia he’s collected, some of which he purchased and donated to BC Children’s Hospital auctions only to bid on them and win them back. “We’re a sports junkie family and I’m lucky Erin is also a big sports person,” he says.

A career devoted to dogs

Bill Thornton is leading BC & Alberta Guide Dogs to new heights

Bill Thornton founded BC & Alberta Guide Dogs, which is based in Ladner, more than two decades ago.

t’s a lot more than being a dog lover. A passion for the job and organizations that aim to help are the catalysts that got Bill Thornton started way back in 1976. For Thornton, who is founder and CEO of BC & Alberta Guide Dogs based in Ladner, it actually started a little earlier than that. “I first trained dogs in 1973 when I was a police dog handler,” he recalls. “I really enjoyed it, so that’s where the interest started. I actually came in top of my class that year, the only thing I think I’ve ever come in first for, so I must have enjoyed it. “Then in 1976 I was in London, UK and walked by British Guide Dogs by accident. I popped in and spoke with a visually impaired lady who had a guide dog, told her a bit about myself and she said they were recruiting and you should apply, which I did and started with the organization in 1977 and stayed with them for seven years.” Following those years, he and his wife Linda came to Canada, specifically Ontario, where they founded Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind in 1984. He stayed with that organization for 12 years before deciding to move to B.C. where they founded BC & Alberta Guide Dogs. They’ve been going strong for 23 years. “It’s been a terrific journey,” he says. “We like to think of ourselves as a people organization who love dogs – and we do love our dogs.” BC & Alberta Guide Dogs’ office was initially in Ladner Village opposite the Ladner Legion. The organization then rented and soon owned a house in East Ladner and six years ago purchased its current location on Ladner Trunk Road. “When we left Ontario and came out here it was because there was no guide dog school in Western Canada and I felt this area was under served, so we came out here and we initially started out calling ourselves BC Guide Dogs, but as the programs have grown we started serving Alberta as well.” Over the years, programs have expanded to include not only guide dogs, but autism support dogs and PTSD service dogs with the

recent amalgamation with the Vancouver Island Compassion Dogs. “Back in 2013 when Vancouver Island Compassion Dogs was started and we were approached to help them, which we did, and I served as their mentor getting them off the ground,” Thornton says. “We started to provide dogs for their program and then last year we decided it was time to amalgamate and so they joined our organization and now they are a division of BC Guide Dogs. They have all the benefits of being able to join a larger organization and we have all the benefits of being able to help a different group of people and we are more than delighted to be doing that.” He says all of their programs are slightly different, but the one common denominator is the dogs. “That’s because we need dogs with similar skill sets. Some dogs can work in all three, some can work in only one or two, so as we raise these dogs we are always thinking ahead,” he says. “What is the personality of this dog and where would it be best suited, so we are breeding all the dogs for a purpose.” BC & Alberta Guide Dogs is also in the beginning stages of a major capital expansion campaign for its current location. “In the next five years we will graduate 240 new teams and it will cost $10 million to do this. We will raise this, but we need a bit of a leg up to start the capital campaign, so that’s why we are approaching both the federal and provincial governments,” Thornton says. “Most organizations in the world, other than the major ones in the (United) States and UK produce less than 40 qualified teams a year. Last year we did 18, this year 33 and next year will be 42, so in terms of us globally, we would be a mid-sized organization.” Thornton says he still loves his job and has no plans to retire. “People sometimes ask when I will retire, but I love this. I’m still driven and so long as I’m contributing in a positive way, I intend to stay. I’m not done yet. I want to see the building up for sure and I want to enjoy it for a few years before I retire.”

ark and Shawna Nickel were just newlyweds when they opened Tsawwassen Hearing Centre in 2013. “Looking back on it now, launching a small business is a pretty major project to tackle when you’ve been married for less than a year,” laughs Mark, “Thankfully, it worked out for us!” Using his father’s 25-years of experience in the hearing industry as a guide, Mark had a specific vision for his own hearing clinic: “I started out, like my dad, knowing I wanted to put people before sales. That’s an easy – and even cliché – thing to say in theory, but more challenging to put into practice – especially when you’re self-employed.” Part of this was the decision to remain an independent office in a market increasingly populated

by manufacturer-owned hearing clinics that carry a single product line. “One of the best ways I’ve found to serve our clients,” explains Mark, “Is to carry hearing aid models from across all the major manufacturers. This means we always have access to the latest technology, regardless of brand; it also gives me the flexibility to be discerning about the products I recommend.” It’s an approach that clearly resonates with people. Tsawwassen Hearing Centre has been recognized in the Delta Optimist’s Readers’ Choice Awards as the ‘Best Hearing Clinic in Tsawwassen and Ladner’ for 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. “The support we’ve received from the community has been

overwhelming and so encouraging,” says Shawna, “And it’s not just having people recommend us to friends – it’s the fact that many of our clients have become friends themselves and take such an interest in our family.” As the business has grown, so has the family behind it; since opening in 2013, Mark and Shawna have added two young sons to the mix, and the arrival of their third baby is just weeks away! “Having our business and family evolve simultaneously has been a neat experience,” observes Mark, “It’s an ongoing reminder that we have a lot to be grateful for.”

oming from a fifthgeneration farming family Danielle and Alicia Guichon understand the importance of supporting and buying local produce. In 2001, beginning as the youngest vendors at The Ladner Village Market and carrying only 6-10 items, they eventually took their business to the roadside of Arthur Drive. On Arthur Drive, the girls built a strong following and both point out Danielle and Alicia Guichon that ‘our customers want to support local farmers and local businesses from their community.’ Once the girls realized that the community had a strong desire to buy Delta grown crops, while in season, the idea for ‘Backroads’ bloomed.

Dr. Brian Ruddy

outh Delta Family Dental Care. A smile is the most beautiful thing a person can wear. At South Delta Family Dental Care, we have a great restorative Dentist available to you. Dr. Brian Ruddy is a graduate of McGill University and has years of restorative experience. Often, Dr. Ruddy can transform a smile, by repairing just a few front teeth… sometimes in just one visit and at a surprisingly low cost! Please come and see us. We think Dr. Ruddy will have some great smile solutions for you.

Moving forward a few years later, the want and need for ‘buying local’ is still as strong as ever. With the opening of their produce store, Backroads Family Farm Market, which now carries over 100 items, including their own farm fresh eggs, local bread, fresh cut flowers and other novelty goods, the focus remains on supporting local. The Guichon Family built and operated this stand from 1980-1989, before turning their focus to expanding their farm. In 2014, Danielle and Alicia reopened the store with an exciting idea to connect the community closer to fresh, locally grown produce first and throughout the season. “Connecting Farm and Community under one roof”
