Local dancers from Deas Island Dance are returning home from a busy summer. Students from the Ladner dance school auditioned and were accepted to several international summer programs, including the National Ballet of Canada, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, San Francisco Ballet, Alberta Ballet, Toronto Sundance and the Rock School of Dance Philadelphia. Deas Island Dance students were chosen to attend prestigious dance schools from amongst hundreds

of hopeful students across North America. “To be accepted to these programs is such an honour for our dancers,” said Deas Island Dance director Lesley Benham. “The experience has had such a positive impact on our students both as dancers and as young people.” Naomi Kawamura, 14, attended programs at San Francisco Ballet as well as the National Ballet School and at the end of the summer was offered acceptance letters to both companies’ full-time training programs.

Kawamura has settled on Toronto where she will be living and training at Canada’s largest ballet program. This talented young dancer received scholarships from the National Ballet School as well as an award from the B.C. Arts Council. Other recent graduates from Deas Island Dance will be carrying on with their dance careers on the East Coast. Maddie Burnett has been accepted into the full-time training program at Alvin Ailey in New York City and

Annelise Bucher is entering her second year at the Boston Conservatory of the Arts. “It is truly exciting to see these local dancers pursuing their passion and they certainly have been an inspiration for our young dancers at the school,” said Benham. “Whatever path our students end up taking, whether it be the arts, academics or other professional programs, dance offers so many benefits and will have played such a positive role in their lives.”

ouring veterans, many of which were Canadians, of that famous air battle. This year’s reviewing officers are Brig.-Gen. Blaise F. Frawley and Col. Darrel Smith. The ceremony is scheduled to get under-

way at 1:25 p.m. with a flypast by aircraft from the Canadian Museum of Flight, the Fraser Blues Air Demonstration Team and RCAF at 1:30 p.m. During the summer of 1940, a few hundred fighter pilots stood in the way of

Hitler’s massive air attack on England. One hundred Canadians were among them. Dubbed the Battle of Britain, it was the first decisive clash of Second World War and the first battle in history to be fought exclusively in the air.
