The Queens Project

KEN ARPINO

Ken Arpino is the creator and star of The Queens Project. This story is something that evolved from great writing, great casting, and wonderful character interactions into the work of art it is today. We’re not in Kansas anymore, let’s meet the man behind the curtain! Where did the idea for The Queens Project come from? The Queens Project (TQP) was actually born out of an idea for another project. Originally, I just wanted to test out some character archetypes. I could never have imagined how amazing the response would be! Was it a collaboration or did you have this idea for a while? Generating your own work takes a village - so it was definitely a collaboration! I was definitely inspired by my friends and real-life conversations, so I got

the push I needed from the support of others. How much of the story line is based on real life? Most of the story is based on heightened versions of real events. Art imitates life and TQP is no exception. How much of Ash is the real you?

get the opportunity to develop him further and discover where his story leads. You’ve got to fall down so you can rise up stronger, so I have high hopes for him. You have 2 parts in this: showwriter, and lead character. Can you break down how you handle each part?

If he is part of you, do you find that it is easier or more difficult to play a character with whom you share so many similarities?

As Writer: It has been an absolute honor to see the characters develop from page to screen. The boys of TQP are so amazing. They respect my writing, but at the same time, they take my words and interpret them as their own - which I love! They have all gone the extra mile to give these characters life and a clear worldview.

I love Ash. I am so excited to

As Lead Cast member: The

I would like to think I am less whiny than Ash, but he needs to start in that place so he has opportunities to grow and mature.

set of TQP is foolishness, in front of and behind the camera. The environment lends itself to playful energy. I definitely feel comfortable trying new things. Some of it works and some doesn’t, but I trust my scene partners 100%. We have so much fun working together and I hope it translates when you watch the show. You call yourself the creator of The Queens Project do you do any of the directing of cast and crew or let someone else boss you around….?

www.ProudTimes.com

That’s a great question. At first it was so hard to release control. I tried to do everything myself. However, we are three seasons in now and I LOVE my team. I trust them. So when they say, “yes we can” or “no we can’t,” I know to trust them for the betterment of the show. We try to work out a lot of the kinks in pre-production, so we will have a director on set that gets to take the lead on shoot days. The first season, it was the get to know the characters. I fell in love with the characters in the

10

first season do you think it was the writing or the cast members themselves that brought the show to life? I hope it was both! I am genuinely excited to keep the story going and see what else we can discover. There is a huge evolution of quality, storyline, and energy with the writing and characters what helped make the huge difference? Unfortunately, the difference is

money. It is a necessary evil when it comes to generating your own work.

fellowship, but he loves his friends and would do anything for them.

Can you break down your initial vision of each character for us and how the cast member brought them to life?

Yourself Ken- I think this is a question someone else needs to answer for me! I try to keep Ash as real as possible - he’s vain and can react impulsively, but he really does mean well. I try to show the love and honesty of Ash while still revealing his less savory characteristics in a humorous way.

Ash- Ash (Ken Arpino) is strong, sarcastic, and passionate. He’s a born leader and picks upnew skills quickly, but can easily get sidetracked. As the baby in his family, Ash is oftenstriving to be seen and heard, which is what led him to pursue a career on the stage. When Ash cares about something (or someone), he can be sharp-tongued and foolish but his heart is always in the right place. He struggles with compliments - big time and has a deep fear of failure, which makes dating difficult. He is often teased by the

Gabe- Gabe (BJ Gruber) is America’s finest teddy bear. He is often mischaracterized by strangers as vain and cold due to his muscular physique; however, he is incredibly kindhearted and loyal. Gabe is used to getting his way, which makes confrontation and challenges particularly difficult for him. Gabe is naïve and often gets picked on by the boys, but he

11

doesn’t take anything personally unless you come for one of his friends - then he becomes the alpha dog. Gabe often reminds the boys to stay positive and always tries to make everyone feel included. BJ – BJ has been one of the most supportive creators I’ve worked with. He is driven and passionate about the project and has been such a positive influence on this experience. He gives Gabe the perfect meathead with a heart of gold vibe.

Nick – Nick is our sage. When the boys have a problem, he is the voice they need to hear. He has a dry, wise-cracking sense of humor. He is particularly critical of Ash, but cares for him deeply. Nick is the Gandalf of the fellowship,

The Queens Project

and the boys seek solace and advice from him. Nick is the party planner and acts as the wrangler of his friends. It may come off as bossy but if he doesn’t do it, no one will! Nick falls in and out of love easily, which makes it hard to judge how he really feels. He moved to NYC to become an actor, but performing isn’t as important to him as it is to Ash. He only plans to do it until he marries a doctor and becomes a trophy house husband. Trey – Trey is such a hard worker. He never stops! Trey gives Nick the perfect touch of dry sarcasm and judgement, but while still keeping him human, relatable and lovable. And the work he does in Season 3 with the Nick 2 storyline is just phenomenal! Nick 2 – Nick 2 is shallow and superficial, but has a way of making the objects of his affection feel incredibly special. He captures Nick’s heart quickly but may not be the best person to trust with his happiness. Nick is easily distracted and has a hard time not focusing on what is right in front of him . Tim – Tim is such an inspiration. He is constantly creating and it

www.ProudTimes.com

definitely motivates me to keep working hard. The hustle is real! In The Queens Project, he makes Nick 2 the perfect foil to Nick.

show and he is such a skilled comedian! Honestly, watch his reactions even when he’s not the focus of the scene - he totally kills it.

Andre – Andre (Andre Jordan) is a late bloomer. His mother is his entire family, so they have a close (read: no boundaries) relationship. He lived at home into his 30s, which now means he needs to make life adjustments to embrace his independence. Andre is very sex positive. He chooses not to date - or rather - “label” things when it comes to men. Fun loving and affectionate, Andre is often the life of the party, which may also be enhanced by his proclivity for a vodka soda.

Trey – Trey (Chris Dwan) is the most grounded boy in this fellowship. He is the voice of reason and often helps the boys get out of the trouble they create for themselves. Trey is incredibly smart and driven. His drive is admired by the fellowship, which is inspirational and contagious. As a partner, Trey is patient and understanding with Ash’s more exhausting qualities. He is an incredible chef and the only thing standing in his way is his own self-doubt.

Andre Jordan – Andre is one of my favorite humans on this planet. I knew he would add such a brightness to the

Chris – He is just as lovable as the character he portrays. He is our newest cast member, but I am so thankful we found each other. The chemistry he brings

12

to the relationship dynamic of the storyline is electric, and we’ve gotten so much great AshTrey feedback from fans! Have to mention the special: Mike Hunt - Michael Ethan Hunt is a character you love to hate. Arrogant, egotistical, and (borderline) successful, he is adept at poking Ash in every insecurity he has. Mike Hunt gets a sick pleasure out of showing off in front of Ash, whether it’s to brag about his career or the fact he’s getting close to Gabe. Ian - Ian is nothing like the character he plays, which makes it even more hilarious that he can convey such a smarmy character in Mike Hunt! I love the nuances he reveals of Mike Hunt’s arrogance and selfcenteredness. He brings it to life so brilliantly. You now have 3 seasons and you are creating a storyline that spans each season as well as their day to day antics, does this make it easier to set up each episode’s storyline or more complex? There is more to balance with longer storylines, but we are an ensemble cast, so I’m thrilled

we are getting to know all the boys equally. The love triangle .. wow this has got me on the edge of my seat. Tell us why you wanted to start the love triangle in the 3rd season? It naturally evolved into one. Gabe and Ash have so much history. They undeniably love each other and have created a life together. At the same time, Ash and Trey are so compatible. They have similar interests and the same sense of humor. How do you pick? What was the most fun scene to do so far, and what was the

13

most challenging? The most fun was Lord of the Rings at the end of season 3. That was actually the first scene we filmed and it really started the energy right. I think we were all so excited to be back on set together and it was all laughs and love. The most challenging was “The Brown” in season one. We were filming in Astoria and we had a homophobic heckler watching us from a park bench. It was annoying, but it strengthened my resolve on the importance of telling LGBTQ stories and representation.

The Queens Project

www.ProudTimes.com

Now let’s talk to Ash Ash Have you always been a New Yorker? At heart, yes. I knew that I was going to end up in a city, but I couldn’t do this without the fellowship. Where did you and Gabe meet? I met Gabe in college. I know you were not for Nick and Nick 2’s wedding, why? Nick has a history of falling in and out of love pretty quickly. I just didn’t want him to make bad choices. You and Gabe are good friends, do you think it is your friendship that has drawn you together or is it because you have always wanted to be with Gabe that has made your friendship so strong? I love Gabe. We have been friends for so long that I don’t know exactly where that love ends. Do I see him in my life forever? Yes. He is my best friend, my brother. I don’t know what the future holds for us, but I think we owe it to ourselves to explore all our options. As a viewer of The Queens Project and watching your day to day through the hidden cameras of your life, tell us why you had an “OH F@K” moment at the end of season 3? I know why, I want to hear the steamy details. There are two guys in my life that I care about—a lot—and I don’t want to hurt either of them. Also, my luck with men is TERRIBLE! I have never been the middle of a love triangle before and the weight of the decision I will have to make feels very scary. One last thing Ash, how the hell did you get two hot guys not only to like you, but I feel they are going to fight for your attention in the next season. What is your secret? Your guess is as good as mine! It’s always when you’re not looking that the magic happens. Amirite?

15

The Queens Project

Ken can you give us a sneak peek at season 4? Well… Ash is definitely going to have to make a decision. Nick will need to rebuild after Nick 2. Andre has to learn to be independent-- and Gabe has never had to fight for anything before, so it will be interesting to see him try. All five boys will be doing some growing up in season 4! Fingers crossed we can make it happen! Because this is a special edition and all about “The Queens Project” tell the readers how they can help make many more seasons. We would love your help making more episodes. SHARE, FOLLOW, and SUBSCRIBE! The more we can get the word out, the more we will be able to attract sponsors and producers. Thank you for watching!

BJ is Co- Producer

www.ProudTimes.com

BJ GRUBER

From lying about being a nerd, to always strutting around showing off those biceps, BJ Gruber brings Gabe to life on screen. Not only is he a cast member, but he is also a co-producer. Let’s get to know BJ a little better! You wear two hats with the show, you are co-producer and co-star or star of the show, can you break down how you handle the dual roles? As Co-Producer – Most of my work as Co-producer is before and after filming. Fundraising and pre-pro before and then assistance with Ken and the editors after. I’m his second set of eyes in picking out which takes we use and timing. Bj can you tell us what sparked your interest in being part of “The Queens Project”? I was looking for film credits and Ken wanted to screen test new characters for a film idea. I applied through an acting website. It was actually totally happenstance. I’m so happy we met though!

As Gabe – Let’s be real. Ken is the star, and rightfully so. Just watch the guy! I love working with them and I think we have a beautiful dynamic going. I’m excited for the future. Gabe is friends with Ash, are you and Ken close friends or did you meet because of the show? As Co-Producer you have a

19

history of working with the show before it filmed and launched, how did you hear about the show? I didn’t meet Ken in person until day 1 season 1 when he had me makeout with Casey Garvin while he filmed it. Wasn’t sure which direction we were going in at that point. Why did you want to co-produce the show? I believe in Ken’s work and want to help it come to fruition. Were you always going to be Gabe or did you try out for him? I guess our first season was my try out. We were really still trying to figure out how cameras work.

The Queens Project

As co-producer and one of the key cast members, do you help collaborate on any of the writing? Ken sometimes ask us what direction he thinks our character is going in or what we’d like to see happen to them the next season. Andre has co-written a couple episodes with him. Have you ever ad-libbed a scene and was it kept after final editing?

www.ProudTimes.com

We usually try out a bunch of variations but the bulk of the copy is from the script. Adlibs or accidental script changes do make it in the final cut sometimes. The accidents are my favorite. They’re so organic. How do you feel you relate to your character on The Queen’s Project? Gabe is like a golden retriever. His transgressions are unintentional but sort of constant. It feels very real.

20

Now that the show is going into the third season and the characters are established, is it getting easier to be Gabe? It is. What he wants and who he is have become much clearer to me. Tell us why that is? I’ve just spent more time with him and have more script to pull background from.

Let's talk with Gabe for a while Gabe when and where did you meet Ash? We met Freshman year at college where we studying acting. We became quick besties. Why, as a hunky sexy jock, were you trying to hide the fact that you are a nerd? I know what you told Ash when he found out, but really dude there has to be more? It’s super off brand for Gabe. He has a persona that he’s trying to uphold and he’s worried he’ll lose it if they find out. BJ feels differently though, come watch my YouTube gaming channel! Your friendship with Ash is a very strong part of your relationship with him, do you think going the next step will strengthen or hurt that? Crazy question people always say you should not mix friendship and relationships, but I never listen to them, do you? I’d hope I was friends with any person I was in a serious relationship with. It’s super vulnerable. I know Gabe loves Ash, but part me thinks he just can’t stand the idea of him being happy with somebody else. I am curious about Nick’s proposal, you seemed to be excited and happy and did not really voice any concerns, was that because you're a hopeless romantic or just supporting a friend’s desire to be with his lover? OUR FRIENDS ARE GETTING MARRIED YAAAAS. Not anymore though, sad. We all thought it was for real and didn’t see this coming. One last question for you, when on the cruise ship why were you really acting out? I think he was just lonely and bored. I’ve been on cruise ships. It’s lonely and boring. I think the more important question here is why didn’t he tell Ash he came home. I believe he didn’t call Ash because he has all these unresolved feelings and at least part of him has always loved Ash but is afraid to lose him.

21

The Queens Project

Being a watcher of the show and really getting involved with the characters, where do you think the chemistry comes from- good writing, likable characters, cast members who care, or all of the above? Why? It’s a huge mix of all of those things. Ken has really come into his own as a writer and I’m proud of him, but we all just really enjoy creating together. Since you are a producer of this show and have been in other shows and commercials, tell our readers from a producer standpoint how they can help support the show? I’m not sure we’ll be fundraising for the next season. Fingers crossed, but if we are I will literally be screaming it from rooftops.

CHRIS DWAN

From love drama to loving the drama, Chris Dwan brings something fun and flirty to the role of Trey. He said he drew from movies like Bring It On and Legally Blonde to help develop his underdog character, so let’s eat some bon bons and learn more about Chris Dwan and his role on The Queens Project! ‘Cause he’s just what we need! Wow, Chris, Trey is going to make Ash’s life very challenging. How do you feel playing a part of a love triangle?

Trey came across as a very grounded and centered guy so I kept myself pretty chill between takes. Deep breaths, y’all.

Oh, it’s so juicy! While it obviously isn’t the most glamorous situation, its super relatable. As an actor, I love being part of that dramanot so much fun in real life. Haha.

What influences do you draw from?

How do you get in the headspace of Trey? We filmed the whole season in a matter of days and I had to try pretty hard not to get sucked into the exciting and fun energy of the shoot. I wanted to make sure

I grew up watching those early 2000’s classics so I’ll always appreciate Jesse Bradford as the love interest in Bring It On or Luke Wilson in Legally Blonde. I consider Trey the ‘straight man’ in a lot of the season so I looked to any of those cute supporting underdog guys- basically all my first crushes for sureeeee. Trey was introduced to the story very casually in season 2, did you know beforehand that Trey would become one of the season 3 main characters?

I didn’t! I was so so so excited to get asked back as such an integral part of the third season. I was very nervous for my day of shooting on the second season because I hadn’t done much on-camera stuff, but the boys were so welcoming and sweet that I had a great time. Obviously I’m also just so fun and great. They truly needed me. Trey is everything Ash has listed in previous shows what he is looking for, how much of Trey is really Chris Dwan? You know, some of the best writing highlights an actor’s strengths and Ken has been so successful at that in this series. We all are able to bring very authentic parts of ourselves to the roles. So yes. I am Trey

The Queens Project

and Trey is me. My charcuterie plates look a littttttle different though. We are always curious to reasons why actors audition for shows, can you tell us what made you want to take part in “The Queens Project”? Oh honey. I was offer only! I was a fan of the series and

www.ProudTimes.com

when I was asked to have a small role of bringing Season 2 to life I was very pumped. I love the tone of the show, the perfect mixture of comedy, heart and friendship. It’s unlike anything I’ve seen before with a band of gay brothers dealing with life through laughter. I’m so honored and thankful to be part of it.

26

You keep Trey very subtle in his feelings for Ash. Was this subtleness written in the script or is this your interpretation of the character? I think that was a little bit of both. I wanted to contrast BJ’s hilarious Gabe and get the nuance of what it feels like to start falling for a roommate which is a little more subtle than

properly dating. Maybe Season 4 will bring out more of a slutty Trey... ?? Ken, you listening? The chemistry that Trey shows in the show is so believable that I am wondering if you knew any of the cast members before you became part of the show? I didn’t, really! I only knew Trey Gerrald through some friends, but the other guys were seriously so fun and welcoming that it was like I got a bunch of sisters on Day 1. What was nice is that in the series Trey was new to the group of friends so it wasn’t exactly too hard to portray.

show called One Bad Choice. Playing an LGBT part for an openly LGBT person can be as hard or harder than a straight person portraying an LGBT person. What interested you in playing a gay character on a gay web series? I think representation is a very important part of growing up and as an openly gay person it

can sometimes be a difficult decision to portray a gay character. Honestly, I never really thought I would get that opportunity but when it came to me I knew I had to do it. Life is too short to get nervous about how you’ll be perceived. I was a litttttttle nervous about kissing a boy on camera but after watching it back I felt thingsssssss.

When I was younger I started with singing but had such stage fright it’s kind of hilarious that I can say I’m a professional actor now. A friend of mine in high school dared me to audition for the musical and I’ve never looked back. I went to college at Syracuse University for musical theater and started working professionally right away. I’ve done a good handful of regional theater shows around the country, and made my Broadway debut in 2015 with Finding Neverland. Most of my experience is theatrical but I appeared in the final season of Royal Pains and on an MTV

27

The Queens Project

Let’s talk to Trey Were you interested in Ash when you first saw him at the dinner where he was meeting the very opinionated health nut? Oh absolutely. I see a lot of first dates at work and this one definitely caught my attention. I couldn’t help eavesdropping and smiling from across the restaurant. How crazy that the missed connection ended up in becoming roommates! How did you hear about the apartment sublet with Ash? Andre had some really interesting ways of getting the word out. I was handed a flyer on my walk home from work one night. It said ‘Rosé is red, Liquer is Blue. My friend needs a sublet. Is it you?’ What do you like about Ash? Ash is just the cutest little golden retriever. At times he can get a little preoccupied but he always keeps me laughing and makes me want to be a better person. We’ve got a nice yin and yang thing going. That kiss was so hot in season 3, I want to know are you going to fight for Ash or are you going to let Gabe go beyond friendship? When I saw Ash and Gabe on the roof I kind of realized I was playing with fire and to continue being roommates just wasn’t a great idea. I let my feels get the best of me and ultimately I really just want Ash to be happy. It’s really hard to compete with two people with history. I will say thoughthat kiss made me feel things I’ve never felt before. I can only hope Ash feels the same.

TREY GERRALD You’ve probably seen Trey a couple times already while you were binge-watching Netflix and downing an entire family sized pizza, but while he’s fantastic in any role, our favorite role of his is Nick on The Queens Project. Trey is a talented guy, and so fun to watch on screen! Let’s get to know him and his character a little more. P.S. Trey, we really hope you find a mug with your name on it one day. Trey, you have been acting for quite a few years and have some pretty awesome roles under your belt! You’ve worked with Netflix a number of times and been on shows like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Carrie Diaries, and Orange is the New Black. These are pretty big budget projects, we know The Queens Project is a work of heart and not funded by a major corporation, what’s the difference working on set for a company versus working on a smaller budget? That’s a really great question. There are many differences, and there are positives and negatives on both sides. One of the major differences that

I’ve noticed is internal. Unless it’s a pilot, often times when I’ve booked a role on a major TV series, I’m showing up as a guest to contribute a small piece to a large puzzle. It can feel a little like the first day of school, and it can be isolating because you’ll sit in your trailer for hours until they call you to set. So, I’ve learned to really focus on my mindset because it’s very easy, for me, to feel nervous and get in my own way. When working on TQP, I’m lucky to be contributing larger pieces to the puzzle so there is a greater sense of ownership and it doesn’t feel like I’m a guest on someone else’s turf. That lends itself to feeling more free and less nervy. When I am on major sets, my goal is always to treat

31

it like I’m on set with the boys from TQP. Trey you have a huge portfolio of work, what prompted you to want to be part of The Queens Project” Unemployment......... ....I KID! I had just wrapped a web series called Abstract Poverty (also about Queens, NY) and had such a blast creatively...perhaps for many of the reasons to your first question. I started taking classes at an improv school and ran into Ken and he asked me if I wanted to do a spot on a project he was shooting and I immediately said yes. (I think

The Queens Project

even before reading anything.) At the time, the Nicks had different names and it was just for one scene. I got lucky that Ken wanted to expand them. How much of Nick is Trey? HAHA! I feel like Nick became the Judy Greer Best-FriendWith-All-The-Answers in season 2 and I absolutely loved playing that. I’m sure I’m guilty of doing

www.ProudTimes.com

that in my friendships. I love having deep talks and pushing my friends to really fight for themselves. I love that Nick does the same. We also share a face and wardrobe. What made you decide you wanted to be an actor? It’s often a dream of people’s, but most don’t make it - partially because they don’t try. What made you the go-getter you are?

32

I was obsessed with I Love Lucy as a kid and always wrote down episodes and would act them out in my living room. I was accepted to a boarding high school for acting, so I attribute most of my gumption from the teachers there. Being someone who has never acted or even screened for anything more than being a background zombie in “Z

Nation” and not even getting the part, how did you create Nick? Yaass background zombie! Come Thru!! The first episode was when Nick got engaged to Nick 2, played by the one and only Tim Murray. We met that day and somehow just really clicked and worked off each other very well. We’ve since become creative partners and created sketches of our own and I love him dearly. I think that first day we just followed each other’s lead and that really crafted who the Nicks are. It was a joint effort. As the series continued, and I had more scenes with Ash, I really just took clues from my own experiences talking with my besties about boys, broken hearts and dreams and hopes. I have seen all the shows and I was sold on the show from the first episode. Nick seemed to fit into the storyline really well, what are your feelings on how Nick fits into the show? Thanks! Nick just wants Ash to be happy and for Gabe to get his shit together. I think the third season really explores all the dimensions of these guy’s friendships and relationships. I love in season 3 when Nick

says to Gabe that he isn’t on anyone’s side and he loves them both. Did you know any of the other cast members before the show? I did! I actually met both Ken and Chris Dwan when I first moved to the city back in 2009 and I knew BJ socially. Ironically, I met Andre a few months before working on TQP when I saw him in the national tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. I have commented to the other cast members that the show really evolved from the first season to the third and the chemistry is great, what do you contribute this to? I know Ken has been transparent about the first season being a testing ground for the characters. I attribute the bulk of the evolution to Ken’s writing, and with the help of so many viewer contributions to the crowdfunding campaigns, it helped grow the show in so many ways. As far as chemistry, I think anytime you get to revisit a character and explore new chapters for their lives everything gets better and deeper. Plus, we all really like each other and when we shoot,

33

it feels like we’re all just having fun. I’m really grateful for TQP and all the boys as well as the crew that audiences don’t see who are really just as much family. I love the show and season 3 plot twist with the load screaming hint that there will be a love triangle in season 4, how do you feel that will impact season 4? I can’t comment because I think Nick was passed out when that happened... It’s a really interesting predicament because it seems that the end of season 3 has flipped so many known portions of the show. I’m very curious to see how things pan out. Tell us Ken! What is your favorite part of the show so far? I really loved the dramatic storylines in season 3. But I think my favorite part of the show so far was the dress-up Lord of The Rings scene. It was the first thing we shot and it was like 8 in the morning and we were chugging coffee and wearing ridiculous wigs. It was hilarious.

The Queens Project

Ken said in a previous interview that when writing he will often give his actors a chance to read the script and give notes for character development, how do you feel this affects the show? I love this question because we did all have conversations about season 4, but I really admire Ken as a writer. I was really conflicted about the Nicks in season 3, but really loved playing it out so I trust Ken on this stuff. Ken has always included me in drafts and I appreciate that, but honestly defer to his judgment. I’d really only object if he wanted Nick to like do karaoke or something because I hate singing. Oddly enough your name is Trey and there is a character on the show named Trey, but you

don’t play that character. I found this somewhat comical. Is it odd hearing your name addressed to someone else? UM! Best question ever! YES! It’s not like my name is Mark or Will, or something. I didn’t grow up with anyone sharing my name. I never had a keychain or mug with my name on it, so it HAS been weird hearing the name and it’s not about me. lol. Especially in the comments when people are like “omg Trey is so gorgeous” I know they’re talking about me and not Chris.

Let’s talk to Nick right now Nick, how much did you really know about Nick 2? Clearly not enough. You are very hot and an extremely nice person Nick, why did you think Nick 2 was the one? You think I’m hot? Yes, very! Nick 2 was my sky, my moon, and my stars, and my ocean... we can never go back to before. I know Ash had misgivings about your upcoming wedding, did you ever take the time to talk to him about that? I thought Ash’s biggest misgiving was about the wedding being in Brooklyn... and that Sherie Rene Scott was officiating. Now, I want to hear your thoughts about Gabe and Ash going beyond friendship? I just want them both to be happy. If that’s coupled, great, if that’s uncoupled, miserable, alone, dejected, and depressed....then great they can join me over on the couch eating Cheetos. If you have your choice of being with Gabe, Ash, or the very cute Trey, who would you choose for yourself and why? Bros before Hoes. I wouldn’t interfere with our brotherhood. Proud Times believes that web shows are the place to find the next generation of writers, directors, and actors of the future what is your thoughts on that? I agree. Web content is a wonderful place for flexing muscles and diving in.

You

You know him on screen as a Momma’s boy, but he says those who know him off screen … probably think the same thing. Though he wasn’t introduced until season two, viewers have grown to love Andre, both on and off screen!

How cool is it to play a character that has the same first name? I love it! Makes life on set a lot easier. Ken Arpino and I have been friends for 7 years now, way before TQP. So when it comes to collaborating we’ve always felt comfortable working together. If you want a good time laugh check out “Skrelt” on YouTube (our first entrance in web content). So, as he started writing more of his own content he reached out to me to be a part of season two. Having loved season one, I was all in. I felt Ken wrote me in the show, as myself, to be myself. Not all of it is true (I don’t still live with my mom), but the personality isn’t that far off. Both Andre’s love to make people laugh.

They both value friendship. And they’re both adorable! You play a momma’s boy very well how much is you and how much is made up? Oh this is probably the truest part of Andre, and anyone who knows me would agree. I think my mother is the funniest person in the world. I’ve always found joy in making people laugh, and she taught me how to do that. It’s funny, the storyline of Andre living with his mom came from an improv moment in season two, episode 4. It was something I made up on the spot, and Ken connected that into the next season. I’m glad she dropped into my consciousness in that moment because It feels like the natural direction for Andre to go, he still has some growing up to do.

The chemistry on the show is phenomenal, do you think this is due to writing, directing, or what each cast member brings? Why? I think it’s a perfect storm of all three. Comedy is like music, and we all fit into the same chord. The writing foundation that Ken gives us is solid, and the direction from Dustin sets us up with room to play and explore. Ken also welcomes input from us about who our characters are, and how they are perceived. That level of trust that is set up before stepping foot on set allows us to be open and receptive. On top of that, WE GET ALONG SO WELL! There’s a wonderful level of respect between all of us, and honoring of each other’s talents.

The Queens Project

Toward the end of season 3, it looks like there is going to be a huge love triangle and Andre may be in the middle because he and Trey are going to move in together. Can you tell me what you think Andre’s part will play in this triangle? That’s a good question! If I know Andre -and I might- he won’t want to take sides because he loves his friends. And in an attempt to please, could make things worse. I might be projecting now, but it’s tough to find yourself in the middle of people you care about. And now due to circumstances, he’ll have no choice but to be a part of it. But this will just be another part of Andre growing up, and making decisions that benefit his wellbeing at the end of the day. Andre does not play a huge part yet, but what part does Andre Jordan play behind the camera? I always say my comedy is my superpower. It’s saves the day. Long hours on set can be exhausting, and you need a boost of light and laughs. That’s what I

www.ProudTimes.com

do. I check in with myself and others to make sure that not a second goes by that we’re not having fun. Cuz girl, we’re too blessed to be stressed.

I have a few questions for Andre What the heck man why are you still living with your mom? I’m working on it! Hahaha! I think we can all agree that thirty is well past the time to leave the comfort of home. Some people take a little longer to leave the nest. But I think we’ll learn that Andre has fears and hopes just like everyone else. Letting go is a hard step to take, but Andre’s got support in his brother Queens. What are your thoughts on the Ash, Trey and Gabe triangle that is forming fast? Ooooooo girl! The drama! I can’t say that I’m #TeamAshtrey or #Gabash, but I know someone’s feelings are going to be hurt. It’s truly anyone’s game here. I know moving in with Trey was fast because of timing, but come on I have seen you look at him, plus he can cook and wants to please his partner. Are you hoping that Ash turns his advances down and you get to pick up the pieces? Have I been giving Trey bedroom eyes!? Ahahah! Although he can cook, and that’s always a plus, I’m not one to reap the benefits of some else’s sadness. From my perspective, I needed help transitioning into being on my own fully. That’s how I see that relationship with Trey. He’s good people.

Tell us what you want Andre to do in season 4. We’ve talked about a few options. Will Andre have a love interest? What are his goals? Who is he, if not attached to someone else? I think there are many avenues of self discovery we can take. And it’s important to show the human side of those friends of ours who use humor as protection. Ultimately show him as a rounded human being. What has been your favorite moment of filming? And who is your favorite scene partner? Honestly, just being on set is my favorite. I haven’t had many chances living in NYC and doing theatre, to get time behind the camera. I’m still learning,

and that for me has been the best part. And I love the boys, so I can’t really choose one. However, we do get to eat a lot of food on set soooo... the food. I ask this question to all the cast members, but it is very important to hear in your own words, why you think our readers should support The Queens Project? When I was in high school there were two shows that I watched in private. “Queer Eye”, and “Queer as Folk”. These shows were groundbreaking for me. Even though I still struggled through my own experience with my sexuality, these shows gave me hope. That sometime, somewhere, I would be free of that judgement I had for myself. I hope our show is setting that same example for anyone that still needs an example of it “getting better”. That no matter what, things get better. You will find friends that love you, and will always be there to lift you up. And that YOU ARE SPECIAL. We see you. We love you. Come watch us and get your laugh on!

I was born and raised in London, England. My father, Robert, is a true Brooklynite, and my mother, Iris, is from Honduras. Thanks to her and French grade school, I speak three languages. At the age of 12, I, and my soon-to-beextinguished British accent, moved to Miami, Florida. My sister and I grew up swimming competitively until high school when I got accepted into the New World School of the Arts’ acting program in downtown Miami. From there, I went on to Marymount Manhattan College in New York City. Immediately following graduation, I booked the first of my three Broadway Shows, and since then, I’ve performed and worked on some amazing projects in both Film and TV; Rock of Ages, Step Up Revolution and Mozart in the Jungle and One Life to Live, respectively. There are also a few episodes of Lip Sync Battle and SNL for which I appeared and performed throughout my career. In addition to being an actor, I’m a foodie who loves to cook. I CrossFit regularly. I love pop music and I’m super passionate about fashion. But nothing makes me feel as good as bringing a writer’s words to life. Above all else, acting is where my heart is.

IAN PAGET

Ian Paget is The Queens Project’s local mean girl, but off screen he’s actually a pretty cool guy. Whether you hate to love him, or love to hate him on screen, we know you’ll love him off screen! Plus, I have a theory that if you cut off all his hair he’d look like a British man. Ian, I want to know how you feel playing a steaming hot hunk who is going after Gabe, another steaming hot hunk, just to get under Ash’s skin? Well first off, thank you for the the compliment! There’s a lot of fun in playing a mean girl... Mike happens to have some insecurities that make him act out. He’s a character with flaws who’s just hiding them by taking exactly what he knows his enemy loves. I had so much fun shooting my scene with Gabe and our director pretty much gave me permission to try anything. That’s the best kind of environment to play in. Is Mike Hunt an alter ego you have kept suppressed or is he

a character you have always wanted to play? Why? He’s not an alter ego, but I have certainly had my share of caddy moments with frenemies. We all have :) Mike has few parts, but when he pops up all hell breaks loose, you make it look so natural, what is your secret? I try to think about the reality of the scene and just have fun making some crazy choices and seeing what feels good. When you were cast for Mike Hunt did you know he was going to be sneaky and jealous of Ash?

I did not know he was going to be such a sneaky guy. Originally I was only in one scene my first season and then Ken wrote more for Mike and that scene was so fun cuz it actually showed that Mike was also someone with tricks up his sleeve. I love that the show is a New York story! I give Ken all the props for creating, producing and starring in it. It really does take a village and we’ve got a great one. I also love that the show centers around gay characters. It’s hilarious and lives in a heightened world and that’s a world I love to play in.

Keep watching to see what “Mike Hunt” is up too!

DUSTIN WILLIAMS Behind every great show is a great director. It’s no wonder that he got the gig, he has a rich history of theatre and a passion for directing - it doesn’t hurt that he’s sleeping with the creator either! Just kidding! It’s easy to remember all the wonderful actors you see on screen, but what goes on behind the scenes is equally as important to creating a unique and fantastic show. We would like to introduce you to Dustin Williams, behind the scenes genius for The Queens Project!

www.ProudTimes.com

Hi, Dustin can you tell us a little about yourself? I am originally from Appomattox VA, which is a small rural area famous for being where the Civil War ended (“Where Our Nation Reunited!”). I got into theatre my senior year of High School and went to Lynchburg College, also in VA, where I got my degree in theatre. After college, I moved to NYC to act and direct. In 2008, I founded Wolfbane Productions, a theatre company based out of Appomattox that specializes in unconventional, immersive theatre experiences, designed for a non-traditional theatre audience. Today, I, along with the love of my life, Ken Arpino, split my time between NYC and Appomattox. Tell us why you wanted to direct The Queens Project? When Ken was first working on The Queens Project, I found it hilarious and loved the light hearted, easy tone he was bringing to these characters’ lives. It also helped that a great deal of the characters and events from the show are based on real life friends and situations, so it was easy to understand the vibe he was going for in the series. I had never worked on a web series before and wasn’t super familiar with the medium, but when Ken asked me to direct, I jumped at

the chance. It’s been an honor to work with these talented folks for three seasons now. Watching the show from beginning to the end, not only has the story improved, but the way the characters chemistry has grown in such a short time is incredible. Can you give us some insight to how you have incorporated the writing into this nicely choreographed piece of art? The writing is all Ken’s doing. He originally made these characters to test out their “types” for other projects he was working on, but he writes them so well and the actors are all so endearing in the roles that this chemistry and emotion just naturally began to occur. It’s because of the writing and performances that I then get to find ways to

45

bring out the chemistry and those heartfelt moments. I get to take moments from Ken’s script and find ways to hammer home these connections to our audiences. Moments like Season 3’s psycho-Ash appearance was so much fun to build because the guys get comedy and timing so well. My favorite moment of the most recent season was the group hug moment. This whole scene was something we were able to discover in the moment and it’s such a cool honest moment. I will take credit for a bit of the geekiness in the show, as I am a HUGE Lord of the Rings and fantasy fan, so probably my favorite to film has been the finale of season 3. Although I will say Andre and Trey are probably my favorite characters, so anything with them in it is great for me too - don’t tell Ken.
