Ron Baron, MBA I think it is safe to say 2020 will go down in history as one of the craziest years ever. COVID-19 affected every single one of us in some way. It forced us to distance ourselves from those we love, it made us think twice about going shopping, going out to dinner, standing too close to strangers, touching a gas pump, and so many other everyday things we always took for granted in the past.

Many businesses were affected by the virus, your credit union included. As maximum capacity levels were reduced in the branches, you, our members, had to rely more heavily on our Contact Center and our online services to meet your needs. These events helped our credit union get better in those areas. Our Contact Center teammates have stepped up to the challenge of a major increase in phone traffic. We have also added the “call-back” option to our phone system. With the ‘call-back” option you leave your contact number, you don’t lose your place in line, and a Contact Center Agent calls you back when it’s your turn! This way you will not have to wait on hold; you can go about your day and we will call you back as soon as a representative is able to assist you.

Additional tools for you include online banking and the mobile banking app, where you can make transfers, deposit checks (using the app), and pay your bills online. We also enabled text messaging and live chat options for member convenience. The pandemic brought out the importance of using today’s technology to get everyday tasks done. As evidence from what was mentioned above, Del-One did deploy updated technology to enhance members’ experiences.

I am also proud to report that through this whirlwind of a year, Del-One was able to take care of its teammates. We did not have any layoffs or furloughs due to the pandemic and the economic downturn. Accommodations were made for those that needed to work from home, back offices were rearranged to ensure social distancing, and branches and common areas are consistently cleaned and sanitized for everyone’s health and safety. While vaccines are being administered, Del-One will continue these precautions until it is safe to discontinue.

The year did bring some heartache to those of us at Del-One. We lost one of our own, an original member and one of our first CEOs. Betty Baker, referred to back then as Credit Union Manager, lead Del-One from 1967 until 1992. Betty’s husband, the late Watson Baker, founded the Delaware State Highway Federal Credit Union (now Del-One FCU) back in 1960. Even after her retirement from the credit union, Betty continued to be an advocate for the Credit Union, encouraging others to become members and letting us know of areas that needed improvement; from a member’s perspective. She also spoke to our entire staff in early February of 2020 at our Professional Development Day, where she stressed the importance of member service, and told us to never lose focus of the fact that members are why we are here. We listened and will continue to focus on Betty’s words of wisdom. We will miss you Betty, and we will continue to make you and Watson proud.

And last but certainly not least, I want to wish the absolute best to Nancy J. Shevock, who retired as Chairman of our Board of Directors at the end of December. Nancy was appointed to the Del-One Board in 2003 and was voted in as Chairman in 2010. Throughout her tenure, Nancy was instrumental in helping Del-One to become the largest credit union in Delaware. We cannot thank Ms. Shevock enough for the passion, dedication, and loyalty she has brought to this organization.

In conclusion, I believe last year taught us how quickly our world can change and be up ended like we never expected.

How we adapt to those changes is what is most important.

We cannot take things for granted as you never know what may happen. The best we can do is be prepared, accept new challenges, and always, always, always be kind to one another. I hope 2021 brings all of you much joy and happiness.

May 18, 2021 at the Modern Maturity Center Del-One’s Annual Meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover, DE. Doors will open at 5:15pm (no early admittance). The business portion of the meeting will begin at 5:30pm, immediately followed by a buffet dinner.

Del-One members and guests wishing to attend the 2021 Annual Meeting must purchase admission tickets for $5.00 per person at any Del-One branch location beginning on March 4, 2021. All ticket holders will be entitled to attendance at the business meeting, a buffet dinner, dessert, and door prize drawings.

For security purposes, tickets will NOT be sold at the door and must be purchased in advance no later than May 10, 2021. Members and guests must present tickets for admittance to the Annual Meeting.

The Board of Directors election results, as unanimously approved by the Nominating Committee, will be announced during the business portion of the meeting.

The Annual Meeting in 2020 was held virtually. If the need arises for the 2021 meeting to be held virtually only, advance notice will be given along with detailed instructions on how to attend. Funds for tickets purchased will be reimbursed.

Board Nominations

Del-One Federal Credit Union’s Nominating Committee received and approved three nominations for three Board of Director’s positions in 2020, each with three year terms. The nominees are listed below along with summaries of qualifications.

Dr. Courtney Stewart – Dr. Courtney Stewart is Deputy Secretary of the Delaware Department of State. In this role, she manages the Department’s capital and operating budget, forecasts and tracks the Department’s revenues and expenses, and assists in implementing and executing the Department’s policy priorities. Dr. Stewart is also on the Board for Gals that Give, a Delaware non-profit which has raised over $300,000 for local Kent County charities. She volunteers with Girls on the Run as an assistant coach, teaches fitness classes at the Dover YMCA, and is an adjunct instructor for Wilmington University. She lives in Dover with her husband, Jimmy, and her three sons, Grant, Greyson, and Graham. Dr. Stewart was named Associate Board Director for Del-One in January 2020, and in January 2021 she was elected Director.

Dr. Lisa Strusowski – Dr. Lisa Strusowski is the Director of Communication and Planning at Delaware Technical Community College. In this role, she supports the Vice President and Campus Director in creating and sustaining community relations, donor cultivation, communication and marketing activities, strategic planning, and college accreditation. Lisa has worked in higher education for the past 20 years. She began her teaching career as an adjunct for Wilmington College, Delaware Technical Community College, and Wesley College. In 2000, she was hired as a full-time Business instructor at Delaware Tech. Several years later, she moved into her role as Department Chair and Instructional Director, managing all administrative aspects of the Business, Entrepreneurship, Office Administration, Paralegal, and Computer Information Systems programs at Delaware Tech. From 2015 through 2018, Lisa served as Delaware Tech’s Director of Workforce Development and Community Education, providing leadership for workforce training programs and initiatives in healthcare, manufacturing, professional development, personal enrichment, youth programming, and conference services. Prior to her work in higher education, Lisa spent over seven years in private industry in the areas of marketing, sales, project management, and customer relations. Lisa has an undergraduate business degree from University of Delaware and masters of business administration from Widener University. In 2013, she completed her Doctorate of Education in Higher Education & Leadership at Wilmington University. She is a graduate of Delaware Tech’s Leadership Development program and Central Delaware Chamber’s Leadership Central Delaware program. She actively participates in the planning and implementation of campus and community events, including the Kent County Economic Summit, Delaware Tech’s Gourmet Gala and Chocolate 5K fundraisers, Delaware Tech’s Employee Giving and United Way campaigns, and ACE Delaware Women’s Network Leadership Summit. From 2018 to 2019, Lisa was invited to join Team Dover in the Dover Air Force Base Honorary Commander program. Lisa currently serves on the Del-One Federal Credit Union Board of Directors, as well as the Capital City Rotary Club Board, co-chairing their Flags for Heroes Fundraiser. Dr. Strusowski was named Associate Board Director for Del-One in November 2011 and became Director in December 2015.

Howell F. (Trey) Wallace III - Trey Wallace is a lifelong and active member of the greater Smyrna community. He was a 1996 graduate of Smyrna High School and attended the University of Delaware. Professionally, he has spent the last 10 years assisting businesses and individuals with their insurance needs as a Producer/Account Executive with Pratt Insurance, Inc. He was previously with PHB Inc. General Contractors. Trey is also very involved with numerous community and civic organizations, including the Kent County Chapter of Ducks Unlimited (since 1999), Harmony Lodge #13 (member since 2004, Past Master 2006-2007 Masonic Year), Harmony Lodge Scholarship Founder and Committee Co-Chair (since 2007), the Smyrna Clayton Soccer Club (2011 to 2019), Delaware Volunteer Fireman’s Association Foundation Board Member (since 2019) and a member of the Del-One Board of Directors (since 2016). Trey and his wife Pam have 2 children.

Voting Details - Additional nominations may be made by submitting a petition signed by 725 members (the equivalent of 1% of the membership as of 12/31/20) to the Del-One Nominating Committee at 270 Beiser Blvd., Dover DE 19904 by April 8, 2021. In addition to the 725 signatures, the petition must also include the nominee’s summary of qualifications to include employment history, place of employment, associated dates of employment and biographical data. A Petitioner packet can be picked up from the Executive Office Manager at DelOne, 270 Beiser Blvd., Dover DE. The Petitioner must use the form supplied to document their name, signature and Del-One FCU member number. Only eligible members of Del-One may sign a petition and vote on a nominee. If necessary, an election will be conducted at least 30 days prior to the Annual Meeting. The Secretary of Del-One FCU’s Board will provide notice to members of how the election will be conducted. Results will be announced at Del-One’s Annual Meeting on May 18, 2021. If no additional nominations are received by April 8, 2021, and there is only one nominee for each position, then an election will not be conducted and nominations from the floor will NOT be permitted.
