Delaware Nature  Society 2011 Annual Report

The Delaware Nature Society (DNS), a nonprofit membership organization, fosters understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the natural world through education, preserves ecologically significant areas, and advocates stewardship and conservation of natural resources.

DNS, headquartered at Ashland Nature Center, owns or manages more than 2000 acres of land for wildlife habitat and education preserves. A farm education program is taught at our 352-acre Coverdale Farm Preserve.

Abbott’s Mill’s historic, water-powered gristmill is preserved and operational. Flint Woods Preserves in New Castle County and Marvel Salt marsh and Cedar Bog Preserves in Sussex County provide extensive field study opportunities. DNS operates the DuPont Environmental Education Center at the Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge on the Wilmington Riverfront and offers programming at Cooch-Dayett Mills in Newark. Unlike many nature centers with environmental education only, the Delaware Nature Society has Natural Resource Conservation and Advocacy components also.

In addition, it is the Delaware affiliate of the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), offering input on national issues that concern citizens in our region. Our nature centers and preserves serve as regional hubs for environmental activities in every season.

Individuals, school students, teachers and community groups increase their awareness of the natural world through our programs.

Dear Members and Friends: For the past 42 years, I have watched the Delaware Nature Society grow from a thoughtful group of people who wanted to teach Delawareans about nature to an organization that touches thousands of lives and impacts the state through education, conservation and advocacy.

As I share with you, my last annual report, I am consumed with pride – not for myself but for an organization that has persevered through many changes and each time has become stronger because of it. In the pages to follow, you will see how much is accomplished in one year, and how much more is yet to be achieved.

Thank you for a wonderful forty-two years. I am honored to have been Delaware Nature Society’s third Executive Director and feel privileged to continue my legacy through the Mike Riska Endowment.

I would also like to wish my successor much success and am confident with the support of the board, staff, and volunteers Delaware Nature Society will continue to grow while remaining a leader in the community.

Volunteer Highlights The Delaware Nature Society depends on the knowledge, enthusiasm, and unique personality of our volunteers for the success of our organization. In 2011, the Volunteer Program raised its bar to a whole new level of success and involvement. 1,067 volunteers helped dedicate more than 21,991 hours of service to the organization.

2011 was a year of group involvement in the volunteer realm. DNS was given the opportunity to work with many individuals representing many schools of all ages, corporate organizations, community outreach programs, and religious groups. Many of these groups’ efforts contributed to the success of many of our annual events and seasonal projects, such as: tree plantings, invasive plant removals, and new educational structures.

A group of seven volunteers consisting of education guides, teacher naturalists, and trail management volunteers constructed the second Lenape Longhouse on the Ashland property. Led by Education Guide, Gordon Fisher, along with: Don Ainsworth, Jim Bayard, Tim Lantz, Eric Roberson, Hank Seiler, and Kathy Szczerba, the team named themselves ‘the Dream Team’ and contributed more than 304 hours in all weather conditions to the longhouse construction. By having these beautifully constructed longhouses, program participants and visitors are able to have an authentic and realistic experience for the Native American programs and able to serve much larger groups. The Dream was awarded the Governor’s Outstanding Volunteer Award in the Environment category and was presented their award in front of a ceremony with Governor Markell.

DNS also experienced its highest involvement with the teen and youth community. 54 teenagers dedicated more than 6,247 hours of their summer vacation to the 10-week camp season at Ashland Nature Center, Coverdale Farm Preserve, and the DuPont Environmental Education Center.

Every year, DNS holds a picnic celebration honoring our active and involved volunteers. In 2011, DNS revealed a new award, the ‘Lifetime Award for Outstanding Volunteerism.’ Charlie Gant, an Education Guide, was the first recipient of this high award. He dedicated more than 20 years of service to teaching hundreds of pond study and other natural history programs. He was also very involved in birding and educating teachers in continuing education classes with DNS.

2011 Highlights • Mike Riska, Executive Director, retired after 42 years of work with Delaware Nature Society. An endowment fund was created in Mr. Riska’s name for scholarship and intern assistance.

• Hal White’s book, “Natural History of Delmarva Dragonflies and Damselflies published.

• The first Earth Day Celebration was held at DEEC on April 16, 2011.

• The first meeting of the newly formed Abbott’s Advisory Committee was held February 24, 2011.

• Coverdale Farm and Burrows Run Preserve renamed as Coverdale Farm Preserve.

• Received $300,000 from Longwood Foundation and $140,000 from Welfare Foundation, Inc. for Ashland Nature Center and Coverdale Farm solar energy project for the Capital Development Program. Solar panels were installed on the roof of the Ashland Nature Center and online at the Abbott’s Mill Nature Center.

• A new kitchen was installed in the education building at Coverdale Farm Preserve.

• In conjunction with the Flint Woods land managers, successfully conducted the first prescribed burn, using fire to remove 2010 growth in a six-acre warm-season grass meadow.

• A grant in the amount of $142,000 over 3 years was received from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife for a Piedmont Biodiversity Restoration Project to enhance management already in process, in addition to planting trees in riparian habitat areas at Ashland Nature Center, Coverdale Farm Preserve and Flint Woods Preserve.

• DNS received a DuPont Clear Into the Future Grant 20112012 to fund “Community Habitat & Rain Garden Implementation” in the City of Newark. As part of the EPA regional National Estuary Rain Garden Initiative, a demonstration rain garden was installed at Abbott’s Mill Nature Center.

• A celebration of the Isaacs-Green donation was held on October 15, 2011 at Abbott’s Mill Nature Center. le Kitchen

• The 5th Bove easement of 2 acres in Southern Chester County, PA., was signed on 12/9/2011.

• Swamp Pink (Helonias bullata) was discovered along Tantrough Branch (Pope Tract and Savage Tract). A new colony of Dwarf Chinquapin Oak (Quercus prinoides) was discovered in Savage Tract.

• Four new species of birds were added to the Middle Run Bird Survey: Green Heron, Spotted Sandpiper, Cerulean Warbler, and Bank Swallow, for a total of 157 species observed.

• American Pennyroyal (Hedeoma pulegioides) and Caroline Rose (Rosa Carolina) populations found along Lindale woods/field edge.

2011 Financial Highlights In 2011 DNS saw a dramatic increase in the number of Grants received as we continue to reach out for additional funding. Grant revenue grew by close to 43% or $288K. DNS program costs rose by 12% while administration and fundraising remained basically flat showing a small reduction of $6K.

Delaware Nature Society Program Sites Ashland Nature Center

DuPont Environmental Education Center

Ashland Nature Center serves as the Delaware Nature Society's headquarters. The site is open to the public year-round, offers seasonal programs for all ages, features an overnight lodge for school and public groups, a seasonal butterfly house, hawk watch, picnic area and four self-guided trails.

The Delaware Nature Society operates the DuPont Environmental Education Center (DEEC), showcasing where the city, river, and marsh meet. DEEC is on the edge of the 212-acre Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge that adjoins the tidal Christina River. The facility is open to the public year-round and features indoor and outdoor exhibits and a boardwalk that extends into the marsh.

Abbott's Mill Nature Center, with its preserved, working mill, is owned by Delaware's Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs and operated by the Delaware Nature Society. Part of the 313-acre Milford Millponds Nature Preserve, this diverse property supports a variety of forested, field and wetland habitats. Hiking trails, boardwalks and teaching stations provide unique education opportunities discovering the natural wonders of southern Delaware.

Coverdale Farm Preserve 543 Way Road Greenville, DE 19807 (302) 239 - 2334 The Coverdale Farm Preserve is a 352-acre property that encompasses an 18th-century stone bank barn, pastures and fields, idyllic ponds and woodlands and panoramic views of rolling countryside. School students and participants in seasonal programs learn about the farm cycle of life and our dependence upon soil, water, plants and animals for survival.

Coverdale hosts the annual Native Plant Sale, Harvest Moon Festival and Farm to Fork and is the location for the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program.

Buena Vista

Buena Vista is a 19th century country estate in New Castle, DE, formerly owned by Governor Buck (1890 - 1965).

Cooch-Dayett Mills

904 Old Baltimore Pike Newark, DE 19702 (302) 239 - 2334 Cooch-Dayett Mills was constructed in 1838 by William Cooch, Jr. as a grist mill to grind wheat and corn into flour. The mill remained in operation until the 1980's and was sold to the State of Delaware under the control of the Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs. With programming provided by the Delaware Nature Society, Cooch-Dayett Mills features education programs for families, school classes and the public.
