Letter from our Director of Education Dear Friends, Continuing our strong tradition of leading efforts to improve environmental quality and deliver excellent programming, Delaware Nature Society has set rigorous priorities for 2016. Water continues to be a central focus as it is critical to our environment, economy, wildlife, public health and food sources yet many of our waterways are polluted. We have identified clean water as a priority that unifies our education, advocacy and conservation work. Experiencing a canoe trip at DuPont Environmental Education Center, hiking along the Red Clay creek at Ashland Nature Center, eating farm fresh food at Coverdale Farm Preserve or fishing at Abbott’s Mill Nature Center are some of the many ways to support clean water. Programs such as Certified Wildlife Habitat, Stream Watch, and land protection provide opportunities for children, families and adults to deepen their understanding of the importance water has in their everyday life.

Join us in taking action to improve our water quality through our Clean Water: Delaware’s Clear Choice campaign, an outreach effort to build public support for dedicated clean water funding. Look for the logo at right to participate in programs related to our campaign and receive a complementary water bottle at the program.

On the following pages you will find opportunities to participate in a variety of programs at each of our sites. Abbott’s Mill Nature Center, with its preserved working mill, is owned by Delaware’s Division of Fish and Wildlife and Delaware’s Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs and operated by Delaware Nature Society. Part of the 313-acre Milford Millponds Nature Preserve, this diverse property supports a variety of forested, field and wetland habitats. Hiking trails, boardwalks and picnic areas provide unique educational opportunities for discovering the natural wonders of southern Delaware.

The American Woodcock is one of North America’s most unique shorebirds. Forsaking mudflats and beaches, it is at home on swamp forest margins and shrubby fields. Their late winter/early spring migration features an impressive courtship flight display and dance. Mr. Abbott bought what we now call “Abbott’s Mill” in 1919 (when he was only 24 years old) and operated it by himself for over 40 years. SAVE THE DATE! The New Localism Film Festival Regardless of our region, we are all locals in our backyard. Come out for a night of environmentally thought provoking and adventurous films and help Abbotts Mill kick off their 35th anniversary year. Enjoy an evening of Patagonia-produced films inspiring folks to think globally and act locally via surfing, trail running, climbing and more.

This one-night film festival in the nature center’s backyard under a big tent is made possible with support from Dogfish Head Craft Brewery. Film Festival program and ticket sales will be announced in the early spring, but save the date for a night of film, frosty craft ale, and food truck fun.

Join Abbott’s Mill Nature Center as they host the inaugural Run the Mill 5K Trail Run. Come out and support our mission swiftly afoot as you tackle the trails. Ashland Nature Center features our Ashland Lodge for meetings and overnights for school and public groups. The property features our seasonal butterfly house, hawk watch, picnic area and four self-guided trails on 130 acres.

Enjoy a guided birding tour along the renowned Middle Run Birding Trail, where more than 125 species of birds are recorded every Spring. During migration, more than 25 species of colorful warblers pass through this county park. Neo-tropical migrants like orioles, vireos, tanagers, and flycatchers are attracted to the early-successional habitat planted by our Members through the 25-year reforestation project at Middle Run. Binoculars and a spotting scope will be available.

Completed in 1933 as a water source for Wilmington, this area is owned by the City of Wilmington and has been closed to the public since 1971. Our group will hike from the 100-foot dam through the woodlands and around coves to Valley Garden Park. Bring a bag lunch, water, binoculars and wear sturdy walking shoes. This 9-mile hike along the famous Appalachian Trail leads up and over Pulpit Rock to the Pinnacle, one of the most spectacular vistas on the Pennsylvania section of the AT. Van from Ashland Nature Center then ascend to the top of Kittatiny Ridge over a steep, strenuous, and rocky section of trail. Once you crest Pulpit Rock, the trail levels on the ridge, and it is a gradual return back down to the van. This hike is rated difficult, but the exercise, views, and wilderness feel will reward your mind and body.

Nowhere in the New World is any road more heavily-trafficked by wildlife.

Based out of the best accommodations in the region, we will venture out in search of the special birds and mammals. We’ll visit the famed Serra Dos Tucanos reserve in a lush and endangered rainforests with over a dozen habitats, 600 species of birds, and the Capybara, Tapir, Giant Anteater, and Jaguar.

All programs must be paid in full at the time of registration either by check or credit card. We cannot hold spaces pending receipt of payment. To receive member discount rate, your membership must be current through the date of your scheduled program. Delaware Nature Society reserves the right to charge the non-member rate for programs that occur after the expiration date of your membership.

Refunds and Cancellations: Requests for withdrawal 5 business days or more prior to the scheduled program date will be honored. Requests less the 5 business days will be issued if the slot is filled or at the discretion of the Education staff. Programs may be canceled due to low enrollment. Full refunds will be issued for program cancellations.
