We were honored to partner with other local grantmakers and numerous donors in starting the DeKalb County COVID-19 Response Fund – see pages 4-5 for highlights.

Thank you to the many donors who responded to COVID-19 with generosity regardless of the season of giving they were in.

We were also inspired in 2020 to begin a fresh look at our organization and the role we play in our communities through the lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

Our DEI Roadmap is in the works and will inform and transform our work in the years ahead.

DeKalb County COVID-19 Response Fund

Grantmaking During a Global Pandemic (COVID-19) Thank you to the donors whose gifts make grants like these possible!

In mid-March 2020, the world came to a halt as the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak a global pandemic. Over the next few days, stay at home orders went into effect and what many of us thought would last days or weeks turned into months with no immediate end in sight.

It was during this time that local organizational funders began working together in an effort to respond to needs in DeKalb County from this crisis. This togetherness formed the DeKalb County COVID-19 Response Fund Advisory Committee and included the DeKalb County Community Foundation, Kishwaukee United Way, Douglas C. & Lynn M. Roberts Family Foundation, DeKalb County Community Mental Health Board, IDEAL Foundation, Horizons Unlimited Foundation, and the DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership (DCNP).

To assist local nonprofit and charitable organizations in need, a DeKalb County COVID-19 Response Fund was created. Over $350,000 in grants was distributed from June-December to more than 30 organizations serving DeKalb County. Grants were used for personal protection equipment (PPE), care packages, emergency shelter, financial assistance, software and technology for remote connectivity, mobile food pantries, other food assistance, education, and more.

Funding for the DeKalb County COVID-19 Grant program is made possible by grants from the Illinois COVID-19 Response Fund and through the ongoing generosity of donors to the DeKalb County COVID-19 Response Fund.

Grants from the DeKalb County COVID-19 Response Fund provided much needed immediate support to local organizations throughout DeKalb County. This generous donor support provided protection, nourishment, shelter, and more.

Grants in Action – Community Impact Funds

A Regional Approach to Wastewater Treatment Thank you to the donors whose gifts make grants like these possible!

Imagine cost effective sanitation, a cleaner Kishwaukee River, and local cities, towns, and villages coming together to explore these possibilities. These are a few of the goals of a Northern DeKalb County Sewer Study conducted by the Kishwaukee Water Reclamation District (Kishwaukee WRD). Thanks to partial funding from the Foundation through a Community Needs Grant ($10,000) and support from other partnering communities, the study took place as planned in 2020.

The Study evaluated the viability of designing, constructing, and financing a sanitary sewer extension from the existing Kishwaukee WRD sewers north to serve the City of Genoa, the Village of Kingston, and the Village of Kirkland. Currently, the City of Genoa and the Village of Kirkland each own and operate a wastewater treatment facility.

With facility upgrades needed for both facilities to remove new contaminants as well as to add treatment capacity, exploring a regional approach makes sense.

Results from the 2020 Study indicate that the project is viable and feasible both financially and physically. Moving forward, the next steps are for the city and villages to fully vet the proposal and data to ensure it’s a good fit for them.

Students With Disabilities Find Success In Project SEARCH Thank you to the donors whose gifts make grants like these possible!

In September 2019, RAMP (DeKalb) applied for a Community Needs Grant from the Foundation to support a work immersion program for at-risk teenagers with developmental disabilities. The request was awarded with a $10,000 grant.

With funding in place, RAMP followed The Project SEARCH model to coordinate an active collaboration between a sponsoring employer, a school system, a community rehabilitation provider (RAMP), and the State’s vocational rehabilitation agency. From there, 11 high school students from DeKalb County high schools were selected for the program. Students learned employment and independent living skills, and also spent time working on memory, teamwork, job interests, and interpersonal skills.

This 2019-2020 class of students had representation from DeKalb, HinckleyBig Rock, Genoa-Kingston, Sycamore, Indian Creek, and Hiawatha High Schools.

From August 2019 - March 2020, everything ran as planned until the pandemic hit. RAMP adjusted to virtual learning in an effort to complete the program. Student interns became creative and found jobs around their houses as a way to complete the internship commitment. Come May, all 11 students completed the program and graduated from high school. Today, 11 of the 11 students have jobs and are thriving in their workplace.

Through Project SEARCH, student interns worked in a variety of departments at Kishwaukee Hospital, DeKalb.

Grants in Action – Designated Fund

Delivering Food, Shelter, and Much Needed Hope Thank you to the donors whose gifts make grants like these possible!

On September 4, 2007, the Hope Haven Endowment Fund was created by donors Jim and Helen Merritt of DeKalb. This Designated Fund at the Community Foundation was created using a gift of stock and has received over $200,000 in additional gifts since. The Fund makes important, yearly distributions to Hope Haven homeless shelter in DeKalb.

Hope Haven serves DeKalb County by providing shelter, meals, and life skills programs for homeless individuals and families while preparing them for re-housing. They also advocate for the rights of the homeless, for those at risk of becoming homeless, and work in collaboration with others to end homelessness in the county.

Since the Fund’s inception, Hope Haven has received a total of $72,000 in grants. The organization uses the annual grant dollars to support daily operations and to fuel their programs and services. Services and programs include the Emergency Shelter program on Rushmoore Drive to provide for immediate shelter and food needs; the Rapid Re-Housing program to transition families and individuals to permanent housing; the Clinical Services program which offers therapy, psychiatry, support groups, and nursing care; the Homeless Prevention program that offers a variety of services to prevent homelessness; and the Youth Trauma program that provides group and experiential therapy to homeless youth.

With the COVID-19 crisis, we were able to use the dollars for immediate needs without having to apply and wait for other COVID-19 related funding opportunities. As the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the world, Hope Haven adjusted daily operations to establish a safe and healthy environment for the community they serve.

Grants in Action – Field of Interest Fund

A Promise to Support, Inspire, and Empower Thank you to the donors whose gifts make grants like these possible!

While there are many Funds at the Community Foundation, there is only one whose sole focus is to address the needs of the underserved and often dismissed populations in DeKalb County. Started in 2001 by donors Jack and Eloise Kaeck, The Promise Fund/El Fondo de la Promesa was created to inspire the community to build leadership skills and empower underserved populations in our community. Grants from this Fund are coupled with distributions from The Wiegele Family Early Childhood Literacy Fund to create the Promise Grant program. Promise Grants are intended to inspire, educate, and empower individuals who may experience extraordinary challenges due to their ethnicity, immigration status, and abilities.

Since inception, Promise Grants have distributed more than $35,000 throughout DeKalb County. One organization that has benefited from these grants is Neighbors’ House, with service sites in both DeKalb and Sycamore. Neighbors’ House provides academic and relational support to underprivileged students in incomeeligible housing areas throughout our community. In 2020, they adjusted their after school kids club program to meet outdoors during the pandemic. Take home bags were created and filled with a snack, craft/activity, and a donated book.

At that time, a monthly educational magazine was proposed as an addition to the bags. A request was made for a Promise Grant to support this idea and in December of 2020, a $500 grant was awarded. The grant enabled Neighbors’ House to purchase educational magazine subscriptions for 30 students.

Depending on their age, students received one of three magazines – National Geographic Little Kids, National Geographic Kids, or Scholastic Scope.

Community Initiatives – DCNP

The DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership (DCNP) is a membership-based program of the DeKalb County Community Foundation. With a mission to strengthen the nonprofit sector in DeKalb County, DCNP offers training, professional development, programming, resources, and networking opportunities to nonprofit staff, volunteers, and board members.

DCNP engaged a wide-range of collaborators to develop the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Action Initiative, made possible by an anonymous donor. Four organizations were selected through a competitive application process for the 9-month intensive experience. Each is progressing toward the goal of creating more inclusive policies within their organizations.

In November, DCNP kicked off this media campaign designed to raise awareness about the financial challenges facing the nonprofit sector and to encourage yearend donations to nonprofits in DeKalb County.

Website Once-Over Opportunity

In partnership with the NIU University Honors Program, this initiative connects DCNP members with Honors students who perform a comprehensive review of the nonprofits’ websites.

Ten Minute Talks

These short videos cover a timely topic in 10 minutes or less. Content specialists are invited to present the topic along with key takeaways that members can use.

DCNP began the year as normal with in-person programming and training. In March, they adjusted to an online space so they could continue to offer high quality content, programs, and trainings for their nonprofit members.

Community Giving Event - Give DeKalb County

Since 2014, more than $3.7 million has been raised through Give DeKalb County—an annual fundraising event to support nonprofit organizations in DeKalb County. In 2020, Give DeKalb County reached new heights, thanks to extraordinary donor generosity amid extraordinary circumstances!

Community Initiatives – Kindergarten Readiness and Watershed Planning

Kindergarten Readines The Kindergarten Readiness initiative provides support to young children and their families across one of the most important transitions in life: from early childhood to kindergarten.

2020 Highlights: l

1,530 kindergarten readiness toolkits were funded by the Kindergarten Readiness Toolkit Grant program.

Toolkits include a variety of writing, molding, and drawing materials; and also contain information on Basics DeKalb County, and a Farm Matching Game.

Due to limitations of COVID-19, schools hosted toolkit drive-thru distribution events.

Kindergarten readiness toolkits were distributed all across DeKalb County for incoming kindergartners.

Watershed Planning The Community Foundation coordinates with (and provides funding to) the DeKalb County Soil and Water Conservation District to develop watershed plans for DeKalb County.

Completion of the Upper South Branch of the Kishwaukee River Watershed Improvement Plan. This 98.8 square mile area stretches from Shabbona to Sycamore and DeKalb.

A new DeKalb County Watersheds website was created and features watershed plans, implementation project recommendations and more.

Learn more at dekalbcountywatersheds-il.org Planning is underway for the Lower Little Rock Creek watershed in the southeast corner of DeKalb County and includes the City of Sandwich.

A $14,000 grant to the City of Sandwich will assist with watershed planning in the southeast portion of the county.

Community Initiatives – Essential Skills

Essential Skills The Workforce Development initiative was created to enhance essential skills (or soft skills) education for middle school and high school students in DeKalb County.

Essential skills are the social, personal, employment, and cultural skills needed to successfully communicate and relate to others. Through a communitywide survey, the Community Foundation worked with middle school educators to promote sixteen specific essential skills which had been identified as lacking in the emerging workforce.

As a result, an Essential Skills for Success Wheel was developed, copyrighted, and distributed to area schools and programs impacting middle school youth. The Essential Skills for Success Wheel became the foundation for the creation of the newly created Essential Skills Video Series. The video series will be offered as a FREE classroom tool for educators to enhance their curriculum.

The Community Foundation’s Workforce Development Committee, in collaboration with OC Creative, Inc., created a video series based on the Essential Skills for Success Wheel. The series is made up of five, fun and unique videos focused on enhancing essential soft skills in middle and high school students.

More than 20 students from six DeKalb County schools were cast as actors in the video series.

Videos address interpersonal communication: verbal and non-verbal, leadership and professional skills, cell phone etiquette, and other soft skills.

Filming with OC Creative allowed students a unique experience of video production and a look at what takes place behind the scenes.

Local educators and counselors from DeKalb County schools collaborated to create resource guides at the middle and high school levels for educators to use in guided discussion that will reinforce the featured concepts.

The Community Foundation worked with OC Creative, Inc. to cast local high school students to model the essential skills to their peers. Filming took place in 2019 and early 2020.

Funding for Essential Skills is made possible by donor generosity to CommunityWorks Funds at the Foundation. These Funds support three identified interest areas; early care and education, land use, and workforce development.

Community Initiatives – YEP

In the fall of 2020, Youth Engaged in Philanthropy (YEP) began its 12th year as a youthled committee of the Community Foundation. YEP is open to all high school students in DeKalb County. Through monthly meetings and volunteer outreach events, members are familiarized with nonprofits, build an understanding of philanthropy, and are introduced to grantmaking.

YEP looked a little different this year as COVID-19 guidelines were put into place to ensure the health and safety of its members. YEP embraced a hybrid model of online and in-person members. The monthly YEP meeting was split into a Tuesday meeting for sub-committees and a Thursday meeting for the traditional committee.

Sub-Committee Highlights

YEP 2.Pro Committee

The committee continued their work to address lack of youth involvement in the community, with a focus on middle school students. A grant was made once again to Our American Voice (OAV), a civics education/ community project curriculum, for the continuation of the SMS Club OAV at Somonauk Middle School. YEP 2.Pro is set to explore additional middle schools in DeKalb County for the fall of 2021.

The YEP 2.Pro committee also began work to address anxiety in youth.

According to YEP members surveyed in September 2020, anxiety was the number one youth issue in DeKalb County.

Fundraising Committee

The committee focused attention on YEP’s participation in the local giving event, Give DeKalb County. Dollars raised support a variety of needs including programming, meeting materials, leadership opportunities, and grantmaking efforts.

Donor and Fund Stories – Designated Fund

Norlings Leave a Lasting Impact on Education in Sandwich Jack and Norma Norling were long-time residents of Sandwich, IL, a community they loved and cherished. They met while attending Northern Illinois State Teachers College, today known as Northern Illinois University, and were married on December 26, 1953.

Jack graduated from Northern Illinois State Teachers College with a master’s degree in education. He served in the United States Army from 1953-1955. After serving in the Army, Jack taught in the Industrial Arts Department of Sandwich School District #430. He also served as the acting director of Indian Valley Vocational Center. Later in his career, Jack worked as principal agent and president of Rex Agency, Inc. in Sandwich.

Norma graduated from Sandwich Township High School in 1950 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in science from Northern Illinois State Teachers College in 1953. Norma taught elementary school in Sycamore and Sandwich for 15 years. She then became a piano teacher, giving lessons in the piano studio in her home. After Jack’s death she worked at Rex Agency, Inc. for several years.

Jack died in April of 1991 and Norma in January of 2019. Throughout their lives, both Jack and Norma embraced opportunities to impact their community. They served and volunteered at a variety of local clubs, organizations, and their church. The Norlings had a heart for teaching and helping others to succeed in life. They are a wonderful example of philanthropy and leadership in the community.

Supporting Youth Leadership And Proactive Grantmaking In 1995, two years after the DeKalb County Community Foundation was created, a Donor Advised Fund was established at the Community Foundation by Nancy Castle and her children John, Amy, Harry, and David. This Fund provided the Castles a way to support their charitable interests and give back to the local organizations who serve the people of DeKalb County. Over the next 25 years, the Horizons Unlimited Castle Advised Fund at the Foundation distributed more than $30,000 in grants to support needs and opportunities in the community. In 2020, Nancy and her children generously offered their endowed Fund to support the Foundation’s Youth Engaged in Philanthropy (YEP) committee in their proactive grantmaking efforts. Their generosity created the YEP Horizons Unlimited Fund.

The YEP Horizons Unlimited Fund is overseen by the YEP 2.Pro sub-committee, a proactive youth-led committee with a desire for positive change in DeKalb County. YEP 2.Pro is made up of high school members who work together to explore current youth needs, select one to address, and begin to explore ways to put grantmaking dollars to work. Members are currently working on “lack of youth involvement in the community” and “anxiety” as the youth issues to address. Through past fundraising efforts and local generosity, YEP 2.Pro has granted more than $5,000 locally to address these issues.

The YEP 2.Pro Committee meets monthly to discuss proactive ways to address youth issues in DeKalb County.

Dinontas Society – Leaving a Legacy

Leaving a Legacy of Love and Support In 2020, the Community Foundation began work to recognize a society of donors who have left a legacy of love and support.

Greek for ‘Giving’, the Dinontas (Δίνοντας) Society is a special community of donors to the Foundation who completed financial contributions as a provision of their will, charitable trust, estate, and/or memorial gift designation. The new website, set to launch in 2021, highlights each donor and provides a brief story about the life they lived and how they gave back in their own special way. This is one way the Foundation can honor and thank those who are leaving a lasting impact.

Dinontas Society Membership To become a member of the Dinontas Society, gifts must be directed in one of two ways.

Donor directed gifts to the Community Foundation – people who as part of their planned giving/estate: l l l

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a minimum donation amount?

No – any amount qualifies a person to be named in the Dinontas Society.

Do non-cash gifts count?

Yes – donations of property or other real assets qualify a person to be named in the Dinontas Society.

Can someone make a donation in memory/honor of someone and have that person listed in the society?

No – giving must be consistent with the membership criteria above.

Member Spotlight - Victor F. Barresi Victor F. Barresi was born on June 27, 1936, in Pekin, IL, and practiced Oral Surgery for over 50 years in the State of Illinois. He lived in DeKalb County for 45 years and selflessly gave of his time, talent, and treasure.

Dr. Barresi previously served as chief of staff at Kishwaukee Community Hospital and was the longest serving board president of the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra. He served on the Sycamore Education Foundation board of directors, was a CASA advocate and was an active participant in numerous other community organizations.

Victor loved spending time with family and friends, music, traveling, cooking, hunting, golf and to continually learn.

He simply loved life. Dr. Victor F. Barresi, 77, of Sycamore, IL, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 21, 2014, at home surrounded by loved ones. A Fund was created in his memory. The Victor F. Barresi Memorial Fund keeps his passion for life and spirit of giving alive and well in the community that he loved and served.

How Do I Create a Fund?

How Do I Donate?

Donations of any size can be made online at dekalbccf.org/donate, in person, or by mail to DeKalb County Community Foundation – 475 DeKalb Avenue, Sycamore, IL 60178. Please make checks out to DeKalb County Community Foundation and include any gift direction in the memo section.
