nd suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
By Chris Mertes Managing Editor cting on a recommendation from city staff and the Transit Commission, members of the Sun Prairie City Council on Dec. 18 approved a new two-year contract with Union Cab of Madison to provide the city’s rideshare taxi cab and corner mini-bus service. The historic agreement marks the first time a contractor other than Sun Prairie Transit has provided the service to city residents since the rideshare taxi service began in Sun Prairie. The contract is contingent on Union Cab establishing a drug testing program for its drivers who are providing service to the City of Sun Prairie. A vote was expected to be taken on Dec. 19 to determine whether or not Union Cab will implement a drug testing program. Commission members used a scoring service to determine the value of proposals from FDS Enterprises, Sun Prairie Transit Inc. and Union Cab. When combining all four review criteria – professional competence, capacity, experience and cost – Union Cab scored highest, followed by FDS and Sun

Moment of silence for Sandy Hook By Rachel Wittrock Associate Editor n the wake of the recent school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. on Friday, Dec. 14, members of the Sun Prairie School Board had a moment of silence for the 26 children and adults killed. The board offered the moment of silence before opening its Monday, Dec. 17 meeting. During his report to the board, District Administrator Tim Culver said just like after the Columbine shooting in 1999, the district will review school safety, from the security of facilities to safety practices. “There is a lot of things you can do [to prepare], but a teacher really put it in perspective, it is like a tornado: you can do everyTim Culver thing you want to prepare, but when it hits, it hits,” Culver said. “There will be lots of conversations, but I think at this point I want to thank everybody for pulling together. The caring the teachers showed the children today, while all of us as educators are dealing with the challenge, it sort of hits you, lots of sleepless nights for staff and principals, and everybody pulled together for the kids,” Culver added. “I want to commend the district, and those sending supportive messages, that has been really great. It is nice to hear from people that appreciate what we are trying to do and want to help.” Board amends graduation requirements Beginning with the 2013-14 school year, all Sun Prairie High School juniors will be

Lions begin Reading Action Program By Chris Mertes Managing Editor new program at Westside Elementary School puts together kindergarten students with members of the Sun Prairie Lions Club — and results in free books. “The Lions Club approached us, asking us how they could help our students with emphasizing reading,” remarked Westside Principal Rick Mueller. “They wanted to do something that made a difference.” Using a blueprint already established by the Sun Prairie Business Education Partnership (BEP), the Lions agreed to adopt Westside’s kindergarten classes. “When the Lions Club asked what they could do, we said ‘let’s take something that’s already working and replicate that’,” Mueller said. The BEP plan is at first grade only districtwide, Mueller explained. “We said . . . how about doing the same thing with kindergarteners? We know the common core state standards are expecting more of students at a younger age. We want our kindergarten students to identify themselves as readers. And so we need to start getting books in their hands that are appropriate for them. “The teachers are going to make sure the books they select are appropriate for the students, the Lions come in and read to the students and then the students get to keep them to start their

very own personal library,” Mueller said. Lions Club members will read monthly to the kindergarten students. Each of the four kindergarten classes received $100 from the Lions in a donation event held last Wednesday, Dec. 12 at the school when Sun Prairie Lions Club members presented checks to each of the Westside kindergarten teachers.
But will $100 be enough? “Teachers know how to be frugal,” Mueller said. “That will cover January through the end of the school year.” The program is perhaps most significant at Westside because of need. “We have 57 percent of our students who qualify for free or reduced lunch,” Mueller said. “Certainly all schools have need and all schools
