President’s Message Spring 2020 IDEFA President Message: Hello!

The Indiana Deer and Elk Farmers Association Board of Directors have been busy trying to plan for the 2020 year with lots of activities.

I am proud of each one for their expertise and willingness to donate their time to this organization.

The first thing I want to mention is the NADeFA Conference. This year, the 2020 North American Deer Farmers Association (NADeFA) Conference is being held at French Lick, Indiana from March 25, 2020 to March 28, 2020. This conference will take place at the French Lick Resort. This event will bring deer farmers and industry professionals from all over North America. There will be auctions, seminars, and venison competition. For more information, you can go to www.NADeFA.org to find out what else they have to offer. If you’ve never been, this would be a good time to learn more about deer farming and questions you might have.

We will be having our Annual Meeting on Friday, May 1, 2020. Remember the membership renewal is due at that time as well. We will also be having selectees speak who are running for a board positon.

Our board is discussing ways to help with some costs pertaining to losing several deer at one time. We will be announcing the final plans soon.

I am pleased to announce that no bills or amendments were added in the Statehouse that affects our industry. According to Trevor Vance with Bose Public Affairs Group, our industry looks to be in good shape this year.

We are still working out details on where our annual Summer Picnic location will be and we will announce that as soon as we know.

Hoping everyone had a wonderful holiday season and were able to share with family and friends.

As the New Year begins, let us take time to be blessed by those whom we surround ourselves with. 2019 brought about some great adventures for our family, as well as some challenges that brought us closer together. We are most definitely looking forward to what 2020 has to offer, and we hope you are as well.

The NADEFA Conference is fast approaching in French Lick, IN. Are you all ready to have a great Conference? We are most definitely looking forward to seeing everyone again this year at the IDEFA booth.

Our Annual Meeting / Fundraiser is also fast approaching. Due to some scheduling conflicts, we will host this event Friday, May 1st. More details to come. If you’d like to donate to this

Amazing Recipes Spicy Dry Rub Elk Tacos

Directions:

READY IN: 55 MINUTES SERVES: 3-4

INGREDIENTS: • • • • • •

2 elk steaks 1 onion 1 tomatoes 1 avocado 1 lime 1 yellow sweet bell pepper • 1 red sweet bell pepper • 6 corn tortillas • 1 cup cabbage

• 1⁄2 cup sour cream • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1⁄2 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper • 1⁄2 teaspoon ground chipotle chile pepper • 1 tablespoon ground cumin

In a small bowl add all spices and blend together.

Place sirloin cuts on a cutting board and season with dry rub on both sides. If you have time, I recommend letting the meat sit and marinade at room temperature before cooking. I often suggest 30 minutes.

•

Put the meat to the side and begin chopping up all of your taco ingredients: onions, bell peppers, tomatos, avocado and anything else you want to add. Cook your taco shells after your taco condimients are ready and set aside in a 250 degree oven to keep warm.

•

Be sure before putting the meat on the grille that you get your cast iron grille good and hot. Place meat on grille and cook for 3-4 minutes turning diagonally and cooking for another 3-4 minutes before turning over and cooking on the other side. This will give you great criss-cross grille marks.

•

Remove meat immediately and let rest for a few minutes before slicing in 1/4 inch slices across the grain.

F E A T U R E D Five Star Genetics – Producing Quality Breeding Stock By: Gail Veley In his basement “Man Cave,” turkey mounts and guns are among the things found and treasured there by John Stoltzfus. Yet, there is another prized treasure perhaps revered most of all - a set of antlers from a wild free-range deer shot bow hunting close to 10 years ago. “I got him early in the first week of October,” Stoltzfus, 44, recalled.

“I’d been following him for a while and knew his feeding pattern. He scored around 170 inches and was pretty non-typical for being a wild deer.”

His reverence for deer grew from the challenges of bow hunting (in numerous states across the U.S.) to the creation of his deer farm, Five Star Genetics in Shipshewana, Indiana. As he begins his eighth year on his beloved farm of 15 high-fenced acres, he is proud of his coveted inventory including close to 40 does and 30 bucks.

“Pedigree, pedigree, pedigree it’s all about that,” Stoltzfus said. While the genetics of well-known impressive bucks such as Thirty Below, Hardcore, Shadow, Triple crown, Unforgiven, High Heat, Freeze brand, Sudden Express and Bluechip run through his herd “I like to focus heavily on the does,” he emphasized. “The quality of the doe is the key for long term market value. In terms of whether Stoltzfus and Farmwald breed for typical or non-typical frames “We like to grow big deer,” Stoltzfus said. “However the cards may fall.”

Because they breed only the highest quality deer they possibly can, they focus on breeding stock.

Their future prospective sale line-up may include two-year-old Thunderbolt, a Sudden Express son over Cardiac Kid and a Sudden Impact sister. “It’s all about Mom’s and sister’s proven production,” Stoltzfus said. “All of my offspring are anchored by a famous mom or sister.”

Other sound decisions are paying off for Stoltzfus on the farm, including building the handling facility, fawning facility and office all under one roof. “Nine out of 12 months a year are raining or cloudy or snowing,” he said. “Everything is far easier when it’s all under one roof.” Another key to the farm’s success is Stoltzfus’ wife Etta, who is “on another level” when it comes to bottle feeding and raising healthy fawns. Pasteurella What is it?

Pasteurella are gram negative bacteria that are non-motile and aerobic in nature. Pasteurella Multocida and Bibersteinia (formerly pasteurella) trehalosi are both seen in Cervid. Pasteurella Multocida has been known to cause septicemic pasteruellosis. Bibersteinia trehalosi was formerly included in a single species of Pasteurella haemolytica but was recently reclassified as B. trehalosi, it is associated with systemic pasteurellosis or septicemia (blood poisoning) in lambs and respiratory diseases in small ruminants.

What symptoms are typically seen in Cervid?

Pasteurellosis, also known as hemorrhagic septicemia or shipping fever, is an infectious disease usually caused by P multocida. P multocida is thought to be part of the normal flora of the upper respiratory tract of many animals. In stressed, young or compromised animals it also causes upper respiratory infections and bacterial pneumonia. B. Trehalosi has been shown to cause respiratory disease and septicemia.

How is it spread?

Disease is spread and perpetuated by a number of stressors, including but not limited to high temperature, humidity, subsequent infections and nutritional deficiencies. When stressed these bacteria are shed through mucous membranes. Outbreaks occur when there is direct contact with oral or nasal secretions with infected carriers or it is spread through contaminated water and feed sources.

Signs and Symptoms

• There was an outbreak of pasteurellosis at the National Elk Refuge in Wyoming in the late 1980’s, most of the Elk were found dead or showed severe depression less than 24 hours before death.

‘We Are at a Critical Moment in the Fight Against CWD On Thursday experts from Minnesota and other parts of the country told Congress that funding is needed to get a handle on Chronic Wasting Disease nationwide.

“We are at a critical moment in the fight against CWD,” said Dr. Peter Larsen, Assistant Professor in the Department of the Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Minnesota. “And we must do all that we can to protect the heritage that surrounds the cervids of North America.”

The hearing in the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment and Related Agencies was chaired by Minnesota Congresswoman Betty McCollum.

Pat Rivers, Deputy Director, Division of Fish and Wildlife at the Minnesota DNR told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS they are happy CWD is getting national attention and they welcome federal dollars to help research and control CWD. “We get one chance,” said Rivers. “It’s a partnership and a problem that needs to be solved at all levels. Animals are managed by states but hunters cross state lines.”

“Chronic Wasting Disease, a fatal, infectious disease that causes neurological damage in the deer family, is an issue that requires urgent concern and attention,” McCollum said. “This hearing will be an opportunity for Congress to learn about current research on this disease and its transmission, as well as the management strategies in place to reduce infection rates and prevent its spread.”

“Communities in my home state of Minnesota are facing challenges related to CWD, such as how to dispose of infected deer carcasses and how to control environmental contamination,” said McCollum. “Learning more now will help guide future research and management funding priorities and improve collaborative efforts to effectively fight this disease and keep our communities safe.”

CWD has now been found in wild and farmed deer and elk in 37 states.

Experts say one of the problems is that each state approaches it differently.

Letters From IDEFA Board Members Hello Everyone in the Whitetail Industry.

My name is Jerry Schwartz with Countryside Whitetails.

Me, my wife, Sara, and our 4 children, Jeremy, Jacob, Katie and Brooklyn enjoy the Whitetails.

I used to have my deer at Whetstone Brothers Premiere Whitetails until September of 2018, when my new facility was ready. I have 5 ½ acres in fence and I have 2 more acres to build fence in the near future. I will have 13 does to fawn next Spring that I AI’d this Fall.

I feed my deer non-GMO feed from Midwest Farm and Pet then I mix in Nutra-Glo and Winter-immune. I also feed Chaffhaye hay to my deer.

I like to put lime and fertilizer on my pastures in the Spring before fawning. I like to worm my deer every few months. I use Safeguard wormer and Neema-Tox in the feed. I feel it is very important to have fresh water and shelters in the pens for the deer. I feel if you have good pastures, good feed and fresh water it will help you to have healthy deer.

I think it’s a good idea to give fawns some meds and fawn paste when born. I also give them 2cc Nutra-Glo in mouth when they’re born. I give them fee once they’re three weeks old. I started feeding them a pellet from Midwest Farm and Pet that they feed to sheep. I have had very good results because it is high in protein and easily digestible.

I hope everyone can keep their deer healthy this Winter and have a successful fawning next Spring.

Minnesota Deer Disposal Plan Unravels, Sparking CWD Fears A plan to dispose of deer carcasses during Minnesota’s upcoming rifle hunting season is unraveling over a waste hauler’s fears of spreading chronic wasting disease.

The state placed special dumpsters in parts of central and southeastern Minnesota where the fatal deer brain disease has been found. The plan was to use the containers to safely dispose of potentially infected deer carcasses.

But Waste Management will not accept deer carcasses infected with chronic wasting or that have the potential of being infected. With Minnesota’s rifle season about to start, officials worry hunters will toss bones onto the land where the disease can spread to other deer.

Officials of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources told state lawmakers Tuesday that Waste Management does not want to be held

liable if the infectious material that causes chronic wasting spreads into the wild, Minnesota Public Radio News reported.

“As of yesterday, they informed us that they would no longer be willing to handle this waste stream for us,” DNR wildlife manager Bryan Lueth told a joint meeting of the Minnesota House and Senate Environment committees. “So we’re pretty much left to scramble.”

Waste Management spokeswoman Julie Ketchum told The Associated Press that the waste disposal company will handle any deer carcasses already in the dumpsters. But Waste Management is concerned about the prions, a misshaped protein that causes the disease in deer and elk and remains infectious in the environment for years, Ketchum said.

Democrats Promote Changing Laws on Meat Consumption Several of the 2020 Democratic presidential contenders took to the stage of Thursday night to lay out their plan to address climate change, and in doing so, some of them mulled ideas of changing laws surrounding meat consumption.

During Thursday’s climate change town hall hosted by CNN, 2020 Democratic hopeful Kamala Harris — who consistently polls at the fourth spot among the others — was asked by an audience member if she supports changing “dietary guidelines to reduce the consumption of red meat in light of the impact of climate change.”

Democratic senator said she would, in regards to red meat consumption.

Asked if the American people should change their eating habits, 2020 Democratic primary contender Andrew Yang pointed to a U.N. study that revealed: “We’re going to be okay if the vast majority of the world goes vegetarian immediately.”

Yang — who consistently polls at the sixth spot — claimed that it was good for Americans and the environment’s health if they “eat less meat.” He added:

After first making it clear that “we have a problem in America,” Harris responded, “The answer is yes.”

“So I think it would be healthy on an individual and societal level to move in that direction. But again this is a country where there is a lot of individual autonomy and so you can’t force people’s eating choices on them. All do you know is try to shape our system so that over time we evolve in a productive way.”

“The balance that we have to strike here, frankly, is about what government can and should do around creating incentives and then banning certain behaviors,” she said.

The two Democratic candidates are among others who have tossed their support behind the Green New Deal laid out initially by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) to combat climate change.

Habitat Enhancement

Create Deer-Friendly Refuge, Terrain

Deer populations may increase by 10 or 20 times on your property with the right habitat enhancement. As part of the enhancement, older trees are harvested to make way for young ones. Additional attractants such as man-made ponds, acorn trees, ever greens, white pines and spruce may be added to increase the likelihood that your property will thrive with native wildlife and provide them with a much-needed refuge.

While land enhancement projects might produce highly desired short-term results, it can take up to two years to see the full fruition of these efforts.

Increasing the number of free-range deer, wild turkey and other types of wildlife on your property may be as simple as rearranging the layout of your land. While this may be a popular subject to talk about, few private landowners have the time, equipment or expertise to make it happen. Hiring a land management company for this task can be one of the most lucrative and smartest investments you will ever make.

“Natural habitat in America is decreasing all the time and is happening all over the place,” said Derek Borkholder, manager for a habitat enhancement and land management company in Bremen, Indiana. “If you enhance your own property you won’t have to worry about what is going on around you.

From a resale perspective, people are always willing to pay more for an enhanced property that attracts wildlife, should you ever decide to sell.”

Land management companies can provide additional services as well, such as regular year-round mowing, hunting blind installation and camera installation on trees or posts to catch and monitor wildlife activity.

However actively managing a property ceases from October through December during the hunting season, and usually starts up once again in the beginning of the year.

Well-equipped land management companies can cover all aspects of habitat enhancement from eliminating less productive trees and vegetation and replacing them with perhaps younger, more desirable trees, vegetation and tall grasses. Taking into account the lay of your land and the direction of the wind, land management companies specialize in physically accessing your property, while addressing your goals for attracting wildlife. Aerial view drawings are typically created along with recommendations for making your property align with these goals. A “vision” for your property begins to take shape.

Land enhancement projects can range in size from a 20-acre parcel of land all the way up to 250 acres or even larger.

Customers of land enhancement projects are generally very happy with the end results. “The feedback has been very positive,” said Leon Miller, owner of the same land management company managed by Borkholder. “There is a science behind it. You need the right ideas and approach, so you make the very most of what you have.”

Some recommendations include building hunting stands and planting food plots near the edge of your land, while creating a sanctuary in the middle of your property for wildlife such as deer to bed down, feel safe and hide at night. “When that deer gets up to go eat, it’ll head right toward the food plot,” Borkholder said. “If it ever gets spooked and runs off, it’ll just go deeper into your property.”

Wisconsin Residents Don’t Believe CWD is Spreading The latest Marquette Poll shows many Wisconsin voters think chronic wasting disease is not spreading, but the DNR says otherwise.

The polls showed 46% believe CWD has stayed the same and 7% believe it is actually decreasing.

According to the DNR, nearly 1,100 deer tested positive for CWD in 2018, versus just 181 a decade ago. In Eau Claire County, three deer tested positive over the past two years.

Health experts say there is no strong evidence the fatal disease could infect humans, but say it is important to be cautious.

“Anytime you have a disease in a wildlife population, it can have bigger implications on the health of the herd overall and a disease like this that’s fatal and contagious from one deer to the next is reason for concern,” said Jess Carstens, area wildlife supervisor with the DNR In order to monitor CWD, DNR staff will collect samples again during the opening weekend of the nine-day gun season. Staff will be at three locations in Eau Claire County.

Penn. Baker Creates Amazing Life-Sized Deer Wedding Cake A Pennsylvania cake decorator created an amazing life-sized deer cake that is going viral on Facebook.

Styrofoam, the back part of the deer was entirely cake.

Cake Decorating Supervisor Pam McNeal created the cake from scratch at the Shady Maple Farm Market in East Earl, Lancaster County.

Officials tell FOX 29 that the cake took 10 hours to create for the wedding, which was held on Saturday.

Everything except the antlers were made from scratch, according to officials from the farmers’ market.

The bride and groom asked Shady Maple Farm Market to design the cake around the antlers.
