t’s one year gone and I can confidently say we’ve had quite the journey. We went from being commerce students to full-fledged magazine publishers and in that one year there’s been much to remember and even much more to revisit. We introduce you to the ed’s pick of the month made up of much of my past favourites, your thoughts and opinions and my current favourites. MR DEEPER SHADES OF HOUSE GETS OUR DEEP MAG LEGEND SALUTE.

erman born House legend, Mr Deepershades formally known as Lars Behrenroth has been in the house music industry for well over two decades. Starting his career as a DJ in 1986 and over a decade spread his wings and became a Radio host and only a year later launched his new career as a remixer and producer. His Radio host career is a true success story which started off in Hamburg Germany 1996 where he juggled sound engineering school and launching his career as co-host to the “The House Sound of Hamburg” a show in the local radio station. Two years later in 1998 he brought the exclusive mix show over to Evosonic Radio, a Europe-wide electronic and dance music radio station from there on there was no stopping him from taking over the airwaves and delivering the goods as House Heads tapped feet and nodded heads

in approval of the Legends unique taste in rhythm. Lars Behrenroth a.k.a Mr. DSOH started out the program at German radio station JAM FM and only shortly after moved onto US nationwide satellite XM Radio and it was only a matter of time before it spread into the rest of the world and can today be heard on more than 30 stations worldwide, and just a year ago in 2012 Lars Behrenroth’s “Deeper Shade of House” celebrated its 10 year anniversary of giving Lovers of House nothing but the good music ‘inumba’.

Having also worked amongst the best on a production level, he was first signed to Hamburg labels “Records Of Interest” (ROI) and “Tracks Of Interest” (TOI) working amongst the likes of Knee Deep and Lovebirds. Armed with over 15 years of production skills he launched the long overdue Record Label Deeper Shades Records in 2008 cementing the global

THANDISWA MAZWAI

M

ulti-award winning South African musician and one of the most influential musicians in the scene today, Thandiswa Mazwai, became widely recognised as the voice of South Africa’s conscious youth. She began her career in 1998 with one of the pioneering bands of Kwaito, Bongo Muffin. Thandiswa seemed to have reached her full potential after going solo. After 5 albums with the kwaito group, she reached double platinum status and won numerous awards. She has worked with the best in the House music scene. She has a song with the King of house music mixes, Black Coffee and she also has a song with his protégé, Culoe, who is equally as good, if not better because Black Coffee is that good of a mentor. Thandiswa has performed all over the world at venues including, The Apollo in New York as well as the Cannes Film Festival.

decade ago we referred to this genre as “International”, today we’re dubbed as the hub and arguably the biggest producer. Just how did we manage to soak House up and become one with a genre that originates all the way in Chicago?

I

have to give credit to our country’s openness and the loud voice it affords the youth. The unofficial rule of thumb really is that whatever the youth wants to listen to will be made the country’s mainstream music. That genre will be the country’s musical representative. In the 80’s the youth wanted to hear the likes of Chicco Twala and the legendary Chicco was our mouth piece. In the 90’s the youth wanted the likes of Trompies and the flamboyant four set the country and the world alight. Right NOW, the youth wants to jam to House! Need I mention the likes of Black Coffee? I give particular credit to South Africa for the “openness” that I mentioned prior because many international producers are generally astonished by the fact that House Music plays on primetime TV and radio in South Africa – in their countries House is underground while their industries are dominated by Pop. So in a nutshell, we heard the genre, loved the genre, played the genre and ultimately became makers of the genre. Question: are we fast becoming one of the pioneers? read on. I remember hearing one of the many House Heads at the time saying “No man! Touch Me (Sharon Philips) was not produced by Khabzela. South Africa can never make a House song of this magnitude”. They were right about one thing; Khabzela did not produce Touch Me, but with the latter, never has he been so wrong. Oh never has he been so wrong, because circa

the time of his prophesy Sis n Jones were cooking up Set Your Mind Free which really characterized DJ Fresh’s Definition of House together with Dr. Duda’s Anthem and Kentphonik’s Uwrongo. We were importing a lot at this time, but another thing that was slowly building was our exports. I’d truly have to publish a book to cover the growth of South African House; it grew in leaps and bounds, seeing younger producers in bedroom studios producing some of the finest hits. Today Atjazz, Ralf GUM, Quentin Harris, to mention but a few, release albums here and collaborate with our artists. Why? Because it has happened; we have become one of the pioneers of the genre. Our sound and different styles have influenced the global sound. The Black Coffee/Da Capo beat with rich African elements has become one of the international standards to grace a tune with body. Our producers are booked outside the country every weekend and they’re the nucleus of international events like the Miami Music Conference. I reckon if Google is fair, the search “House Music” should show the keywords “South Africa”. No, it’s not a competition but a sense of pride: from loving this ‘International’ genre, soaking it up and making it a part of our culture, to being one of the pioneers, the “hub” as we are so aptly labeled – we as South Africans are proud to be the home of House. t’s a thrilling time of the year for House Music – the DEZEMBA we’ve been building up to. If you’re an artist and you find your song(s) is lurking around DEEP Mag’s chart in December, you must be in an explicable state of euphoria. Of course some tracks fell out and made space for others to debut. Some of those debutants include Zakes Bantwini - Ghetto, Revolution & Black Motion – Noqatiko & Imaani – Live Without Love. I recommend

that you grace your ears with those songs. Some have moved up and down the chart, seeing last month’s NO. 1, Heavy K &Bucie’s Easy To Love, dropping 3 spaces to NO. 3. ho are we to break the necessary tradition of counting down some of the biggest songs of the year? 2013 was an extraordinary year for House, particularly South African House. I say this having had the privilege of being a presenter in two different radio stations. The House tunes that were on SUPER high rotation were local ones and the chart should adequately reflect that. This special chart is packed with recent hits like Jika by MiCasa to tracks that carried the year like The Layabouts’ Do Better, as well as the strong local and international

collaboration by DJ Pepsi & Monique Bingham with Pride – this chart should surely sum up the year for you. Some of these songs may have not been officially released in 2013, but made their greater impact in the year. I staunchly challenge the hits of 2014 to match up or even surpass the level of those of 2013. I’m very confident that one of these songs will scoop the coveted Song of the Year. DJ LAZOLA South Africa’s capital of musical success has always been Gauteng and rightfully so, Pretoria is considered to be the home of South African house and Johannesburg has continuously produced the future stars of house music, but of late a trend is rising. The country is dancing more and more to productions from outside the province, Da Capo, Zano, from Mpumalanga and the man of the moment Heavy K, from the Eastern Cape, the list continues. Lazola Langa is one such young DJ. He hails from the Eastern Cape and has quickly built a name for himself with crowds from Port St Johns to Butterworth and as if to prove that house productions are no longer just exclusive to Gauteng, is proving quite the success financially and musically. We take a look at the other side of the country and catch up with Lazola to find out the journey of an Eastern Cape DJ.

DM: Lazola, you’re a DJ from the Eastern Cape, tell us more about yourself? What's your stage name? ‎Lazola: Yes I am from Eastern Cape, born and raised in the Eastern Cape. On the decks am known as DJ Leoscii, pronounced as Leo ski. DM: How did you get into DJing? Lazola: It all started with the love I have for house music, I was advised by a friend to turn that passion into something and that’s when I got into

DJing. It took some time for me to get used to the whole thing of being a DJ, but after a few months I can say I settled in just fine DM: What does a typical set consist of when DJ Leoscii is on the decks? Lazola: I would say it all depends on the time I play, audience and the place. I’m the type of DJ that likes to play for the crowd; nothing beats a packed dance floor when you're rocking a set. If I’m playing an opening set, I like to

play soulful and deep house music just to get the party started, as time goes by and the dance floor starts to get packed, I raise the bar a bit by smoothly introducing a bit of commercial in it. Sing along songs, to accommodate those commercial house lovers. Basically I would say I play deep and soulful house with a bit of commercial at a certain point, all depending on the audience and time. DM: What would you classify as your favourite genre though? Lazola: well, personally I’m into deep and soulful house music with good female vocals. Songs like Buya by Black Coffee, that kind of music does it for me as an individual, but when I have to play for people, it’s a different story, commercial dominates.

Lazola: I never underestimate my abilities on the decks, I believe I can fit anywhere you place me. The tough competition inspires me instead, I don’t fear it, instead I just look to learn from it. DM: Seeing guys like heavy K do so well in Gauteng, does it encourage you as a DJ from the EC? Lazola: ahh, Heavy K really is a motivation especially to us young DJ’s. That guy has achieved a lot at an early age, he encourages me a lot.

DM: Do you look at music and being a DJ as being a long term plan? Lazola: Yes, of course, every young DJ dreams of reaching that high standard at some point, for now though I am pursuing a career in Information Technology, which I really feel will be helpful and instrumental in my future music career. One goal at a time, the sky is the limit for me.

DM: What do you think of the EC music scene, is it vibrant and is there money to be made here? Lazola: With DJing, money can be made anywhere if you put your best effort in whatever you do. One thing you must understand about the Eastern Cape, you have to know the right people in order to make a name for yourself quickly. For me, I can say money can be made here because our people really like to party.

DM: As a DJ outside the capital party province, Gauteng, is it a place you would like to play at one day? Lazola: You know, I believe in making it big in your area first so that when you get to the big guns in Gauteng, you have built a good profile. Yes, I would love to get an opportunity to shine in Gauteng, it’s where everything happens. Gauteng has a lot of opportunities in entertainment so being based there really opens a lot of doors

DM: Lastly, where can people catch you play generally and what are your future plans with music? Lazola: Currently you can catch me at Wayside Pub n Grill and Khiros Lounge as a resident DJ, Butterworth natives would be aware of the spots. I’m concentrating on completing my studies and building a strong name for myself in the whole of the Eastern Cape and of cause capitalizing on any and every opportunity that comes my way. Young, gifted, driven and highly motivated is how you can describe DJ Stumza who is making waves all over JHB. Rocking the decks from Soweto to Sandton, he is one of the most promising artists to come out of Soweto. The ever hardworking Stumza won a UJ campus DJ competition and it looks like there’s no stopping him.

DM:: We've heard a lot about DJ Stumza, but let's hear from the horse’s mouth...Tell us about yourself? ST:: Well I'm a Soweto, Orlando West, born and Bred DJ with a love for good music, FVCK Fashions Ambassador. Ambitious, optimistic, hard-working and an open-minded person. Always see the bright side of life and never gives up. I always keep my head up after every downfall with the almighty on my side. DM:: When did you realise you wanted to be a DJ? ST:: I grew up listening to The Legendary DJ Mbuso, Jerah, China and Claude from an early age only because they resided where I grew up. They hosted parties at Orlando West regularly. I was always fascinated by their track selections, their transition between songs and how the music they played managed to get everyone dancing regardless of it being deep. I was 12 when I realised I wanted to be a DJ.

DM:: Tell us a bit about the competitions you won? ST:: I was a runner-up for a number of DJ competitions, but the most recent was the UJ Campus DJ competition.

DM:: You've shared the stage with so many big names in the deep house industry, what made you choose to go deep when every DJ wants to be a commercial DJ? ST:: I'd like to say I wanna educate the masses and show them even with deep house you can actually enjoy and dance to it. It helps to be broad in terms of the music you play, but I prefer to play tracks that are different and possess a certain meaning of some sort. Music that speaks to you and that actually makes sense. I started as a commercial DJ but I've always loved deep. I'd say I'm versatile on the decks depending on the scene and the time of my sets. It won't be too commercial a bit of this and that does the trick. Not forgetting Old School House tracks from Compilations by DJ Terrance, Claude, Iggy Smallz, Fresh. Their selections never disappointed.

DM:: How has winning the campus DJ competition changed your career as a DJ? ST:: It has opened quite a number of doors and it has given me confidence in my ability to be the next big thing. Hard-work and discipline can get me there. I've learnt to be creative and accommodate the masses.

DM:: We understand you are a producer too, so when can we expect a compilation or mixtape from DJ Stumza? ST:: On the production side, I'm still a bit laid back on that. I wanna master my craft before I go that direction. This will help me in terms of the sound I'd like to have on my productions, but it sure will be quality stuff, future classics. I should have a compilation in about 2 years. I'm in no rush. DM:: What role would you say Mandela has played in your career as a DJ? ST:: Tata Rolihlahla Mandela has opened doors to all youngsters in terms opportunities and he has taught me to have faith, to forgive and be humble. His spirit to keep going regardless of the negativity around him gives me hope that all I'm working towards shall come eventually if I keep on hustling and continue to stay loyal to the game, "the love for house music". We all could learn a lot from the struggle the elders went through to be where we are now. We should show appreciation by loving each other, respecting one another and helping each other to grow. May his beautiful, selfless soul rest in peace. Lala ngoxolo Tata. DM:: What can we expect from Stumza next year? ST:: There's a lot to expect from me. I’m looking to expand my sound hire business into events coordinating, catering, stage, lighting, 3D Stretch Tents and so on. And I'm working with a talented drummer "Skeem Master" on a number of tracks that look to be out by September. I hope to get into radio, arrangements are being made but there's still a long way to go. 2014 sounds like a great year to break into the Entertainment industry. NELSON MANDELA

DIES AT 95

A

fter the President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma addressed the nation at around 11:45 on the 5th of December 2013, it made news throughout that the world that the father of the nation, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela had died. It all started when the news was announced to international media first. A few people in the South African entertainment industry took to Twitter to tweet about what they know. It was all speculation at this 32// D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 3

point because there had been no official address as yet, until the President’s address. Jacob Zuma pointed out that it was around 20:50 that Tata Madiba had passed. It was announced that the nation will go into 10 days of mourning, leading up to the funeral. On Friday, the 6th of December the world stood still. Everything was about the passing of Tata Madiba, on all social media platforms. Even google had Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela 1918 – 2013 on their search page.

Twitter itself tweeted a condolences message to the Mandela family. The memorial service however, was almost a flop. As leaders, royalties and dignitaries came from all over the world to pay their last respects to the late Nelson Mandela, South Africans were not on their best behaviour. As each leader was welcomed, the crowd would cheer, this was not the same for Jacob Zuma. When former President Thabo Mbeki made his way onto the stadium, the crowd cheered. The crowd even cheered when former apartheid President FW De Klerk was shown on the screens. Come this time of the year, as any marketing manager will tell you, consumers, particularly South African consumers, tend to throw all financial prudence out the door and become engulfed by the so-called xmas spirit, which translates to “buy” “buy” “buy” as a present for a friend or for yourself. Consumers want to enjoy the holiday season, they want to make someone else happy, they do that by buying gifts and what is one of the most popular and solid gift, music. December releases are almost always assumed to be a success, because you as the musician believe that the audience obviously will want to buy because that’s what they are doing anyway, but honestly, who releases an album at this time of the year and pit themselves against the big guns, without knowing their story unless they want to be decimated on sales? The artist that releases an album at this time of the season is the one that has earned a loyal following and one who has specifically produced a festive, dance all month, album and therefore is delivering to the consumer and should you get the sound right and meet peoples demands, you may have the highest sales of your life.

he Soulful Vocal mix on the Urban beat on metro FM is the perfect pre-party starter if you are about to go out for night on the dance floor or if you have decided to stay in on a Friday night. Vinny, Christos, and Zeal have been around long enough to give the masses a proper indication of which up and coming Soulful house tunes should we be on the lookout for. This particular mix took me back to the days when I was first introduced to house and reminded me why I fell hook, line, and sinker for house The mix kicks off with a tune from the legendary, Osunaldes latest offering. As usual he never disappoints. This is such a feel good jam with hints of Osunlades signature tribal sound in the distant background, but it still maintains an ‘oh so soulful vibe’. This is followed by another feel good vocal track remixed by Scott Wozniak. On the vocals we have Robin S, whose voice you might be familiar with from popular dance releases from the 90s, including the hit single “Show me love “. The vocals make the song extra special. It stills has the 90S feel and it still sounds good. Ride on the rhythm introduces a more upbeat vibe to the mix. When you listen to the song you cannot help but be reminded of the old school years of

dance house. Strong vocals blended with a powerful beat, I cannot say more. Louie Lou Gorbea, anything this man touches becomes extraordinary, he just cannot go wrong. This is a definite dance floor filler. If none of the other songs on the mix have managed to get you up on your feet, without a doubt, this most definitely will. Manchild Black provides some of the sultriest and laid back vocals on the entire mix. I dare you not to dance. ‘Let the music play’ is a more chilled more relaxed than the previous tune and in my opinion, it slows mix down and it is kind of a vibe killer. I still love the song though don’t get me wrong, it is just unfortunate that it had to come up after a Lou Gorbea smash hit. Finally, what a way to end an awesome mix. ‘The more I get, the more I want’, this is exactly how I feel about this Davidson Ospina tune. This song oozes so much soul; I wanted to listen to it over and over again. I know if Teddy Pendergrass were to listen to this remake of his classic with the vocals of David Walker, he would approve. David Ospina has managed to give even more soul to an already soulful classic. I must say the soulful tunes on the urban beat never cease to amaze me. Soulful, ’Feel good’, uplifting house. It does not get any better than this.

hen one day, someone in house decides to establish the House Music Hall of Fame (HEELO!), one of the names that would’ve earned its right onto the list would be Kid Fonque. The journey of South African house music is intimately intertwined with the Kid Fonque name alongside, the likes of Christos, Da Vinci, Oskido and the likes. From stationing as resident DJ for some of the most notable deep house clubs in the country such as 206, @115 and Reality to name a few, to master minding a career that would lead him to becoming one of the most recognised names in house in the country for his diverse and infused sets, that carry a hint of everything, so long as soulful and impeccable. But Kid Fonque’s most notable title has to be that of Soul Candi label manager, therefore being partly responsible for putting such careers as our covers story, Liquideep, Mi Casa, Muzart and Euphonik on the map, now I don’t know about you, but I think all that put together must scream unuf*ng believable! What a career, what a man! And for his latest offering, he brings together a collection of all his acquaintances over his illustrious career to create Kid Fonque and Friends. We caught up with the legend and here’s what he had to say:

DM: Your name is legendary, when did the music bug bight Kid Fonque? KF: Hmmmm, I think from birth. I was brought up in a very musical house and it has been the same since then, I surround myself with music. DM: You’re a very versatile DJ, in fact, a Kid Fonque set could comprise of anything, but you've garnered your greatest achievements in the house scene, would you say that's your genre of preference? KF: I don’t like to be pigeon holed, but yes you are right that House music has been good to me, but I like to get house heads to get down to new styles which I will always incorporate in my sets and productions. Always good to have a flip and change it up. DM: Your latest offering Kid Fonque and friends has you working with a slew of the best talents, what was the selection criterion for the features? KF: It was easy, are you my friend? Have we gone for a coffee? Do we talk music? Can I take their talent and encompass it in a different genre or style, that’s pretty much how the whole project came together.

DM: How did you go from residency at 206 to being label manager of Soul Candi? KF: That’s a very long journey between the two, but a simple explanation is that I kept working my way up in the music industry, from retail to sales rep to sales manager to label manager, kept climbing the ladder. DM: Soul Candi has been responsible for the biggest names in the SA house scene, what does it actually take to make it as one of the Soul Candi label artist? KF: I suppose the obvious answer would be Talent, but when we A&R with our team we look for individuality, so many good producers imitate and make the same as the next person. To stand out you need to make something unique.

In my recent trips overseas most of the international DJ's and producers are so intrigued by our scene because we have so much happening here in house and it continues with our local artists making waves overseas. DM: What else would Kid Fonque like to accomplish in the industry that he hasn't? KF: I would love to host a specialist radio show encompassing all good soul music across the genres, I feel people miss so much good music because our radio stations predominantly play commercial. DM: Lastly, can you please share with young and upcoming DJs what the recipe to a long lasting career in the house industry is? KF: Keep at it, don’t give up. I’m not young and I am only getting my productions played now.

T

his is by far one of my favourite releases for the year 2013. I call it my ‘Happy Song’. “Two sides” is proof to those who did not believe that South African house is on a level of its own, that they might need to reconsider that thought. It’s a mixture of a soulful beat laced with the vocals of Theo Parish who sings about the magic of DJing. Kid Fonque’s sound is one I can never explain. Sometimes he manages to just create his own totally unique sound. The highlight of this tune is definitely the melody from the piano. It manages to just creep up ever so gently through the vocals, so on point. The blend of the opposite types of melodies is pure genius. The first sound is created through the brilliance of the keys which gives the song so much soul. The second is the bass drum together with the vocals, which give it a jazzy and deep feel. I just feel that this tune has not received enough air play which is really unfortunate. Then again it is the festive season, and miracles do happen, right?. Give it a listen! By: Louisa Nkosi

VIDEO REVIEW

Black Coffee - “BUYA” Black Coffee continues to never disappoint! He now has a new single titled “Buya” featuring Toshi which has been making waves since its release. The single on its own is a remarkable dance song that has had many in on the dance floor and on their toes, sweating in the process of hypnosis, of nothing but good music. The music video has been well coordinated to fit the song and the message that is being portrayed. It possesses good quality pictures which are both smooth and clear to the viewer. The music video is not too busy which makes it friendlier and easier to watch and enjoy. It is amazing how much of the strong emotion one can sense and see from the lady (Toshi), which I believe supports the main message “BUYA” which means come back. The first minute of the music video sets the plot nicely, with both artists (Black Coffee and Toshi) shot in different scenes, with Toshi’s scene portraying sorrow and loneliness, which then again supports the title of the single. Title: Long Awaited Artist: DJ Fresca Label: Social Underground Music The name sounds very familiar and you know he has done some great work over the years, jikizela inqondo, being one such reminder, but for the last two years, nothing has come from the certain future legend that is DJ Fresca, until now, with an album aptly named, Long awaited. This twelve track album gives us a taste of the old Fresca and a new look at what more the man is capable of. It is a beautiful piece of deep house music, with soulful rhythms, hard stabbing bass drums and tender melodies. The album features some big names, the least of which being a collaboration with the late Busi Mhlongo on a track that might be the stand out track of the season. We also hear the man of the moment Zano make a feature on the album on yet another future dance banger. This will be Fresca’s re-entry into an industry that has evolved tremendously and to be honest he has matched and exceeded the standards of what us required to compete, this would be one of my favourites for the year and maybe my last.

Title: Soul Africa Artist: Lulo Cafe Label: Soul Candi Ok I admit it, I should’ve given this one a listen a while back, but I sort of find Lulo cafe to be a mystery a tad bit and this latest offering Doesn’t do much to deter me from that thought.The DJ, Compiler and now producer still doesn’t quite answer my questions about him. However, one thing is certain, Lulo Cafe has become a remarkable producer and always stays true, well mostly, to his roots, lounge, deep and soulful. This album though does throw in a few surprises, like a few afro beat sounds and had the usual suspects in features like Monea, but the biggest surprise was the Donald feature, but the beautiful melody of the track made one forget that they were listening to the voice of the king of cheesy commercial. In this album we find Lulo experimenting a little more with sound and in my opinion pulls it off, all be it, the album might be a bit everywhere, but in a surprisingly enjoyable manner.

This album is a showcase of the talent that exists in the country and is impeccably arranged and mixed to showcase the sounds and beats that are so uniquely South African. The album is a varied mix that can be enjoyed by everyone, the sound varies from soulful deep house to drum bass afro house. The mixing infuses all these sounds into a wonderful night of dance. This is a wonderful present for any house lover or even yourself, it certainly is a must have for any passionate house lover for the classic collection.

Inspired by its humble beginnings and location - a warehouse in Diepkloof aka “Zone 6”, it is destined to become Soweto’s next big thing. It is one of the most prominent venues to party at, hosting the biggest celebrity DJ’s, artists, celebrities and “wanna be’s along with big

spenders, its proven itself as one of the most spoken about places to come out of Soweto. The zone6 venue is a “MUST party at place this December” with its state of the art sound and lighting, massive stage, outside deck area with an overflow pool and capacity for 3000 people. ith sub-genre after subgenre, house music has probably one of the most diverse collections of sound and genre of music, funk, soulful house, deep house, afro-house, vocal house and so it goes, so as a religious house fan one couldn’t have imagined an almost entirely new sound coming to the fray and one group completely owning it. The liquideep sound is one I can’t seem to quite finger, textured mellow vocals, live sets, a little bit of RnB, a little bit of soul and a whole lot of dance floor insanity! From their first hit offering fairy-tale, a slow hard bass hitting, mellowed vocals tune that stayed with you long after hearing the song, the duo of Zyon and Rayzor were obviously not out to make conventional house, which probably followed suit to an unconventional union of two people who just wanted to make good soulful music and were trading knowledge, but what would result, would, in my opinion be as close to what you can call universal deep house, smooth, mellow, tender, vocal and seductive. The duo have returned after a brief hiatus to deliver their third offering, “welcome aboard”, which produced two hits already and a slew of accomplished features such as DJ Kent and Gregor Salto. We ask the duo, on their feeling of being the influence on an almost entirely new sound and what keeps them winning.

& A Q DM: Your style and sound somewhat brought a different perspective of house to the industry, was that the intention when the group was formed, to explore with sound and challenge the norm? LD: Yes, we noticed that the music we liked listening to and played at clubs was not mostly produced here at home, but there where artists already doing soulful house music, we just decided to perform it live everywhere we went. DM: Two albums down, ‘welcome aboard’ is your third, describe the sound of this album for us? LD: Welcome aboard describes the journey that Liquideep have been through from the first album to date, it’s is the first project where we featured Artists, Producers and session musicians. It was deliberately done to bring a different flavor. DM: And what would you say is the liquideep sound? LD: Chilled, deep, melodic and musical house music fused with laid back vocals. DM: What is the starting point for liquideep when producing an album? LD: The process is always organic, we are both producers, and we prefer to start skeletons on our laptops whenever inspiration hits, it could be in a hotel, in a ride from a gig in a plane ... As long as the laptop battery still has power we rock a beat. So welcome aboard album was mostly conceived on the road (hotels, planes, taxis etc).

DM: What would you say makes you guys so commercially successful, yet with such a mellow sound? LD: Eish, that’s a tough question :) We just get in studio, with no formula but just a feeling and we try to be as honest as possible to that feeling, but we spend time on a song and we make sure that we LOVE the track once we are confident that the world can have a Listen we start testing it out during our gigs and sample it to exclusive DJs and take it from there. We are very chilled individuals; the music is an extension of our character. DM: You released your latest album under your own record label; mentalwave, why start your own label and what have been the challenges that came with that decision? LD: Yes, welcome aboard is released under our label Mentalwave. The move to go independent was inspired by our yearning for creative freedom and copyright ownership. It was not a difficult decision to make, but running an independent label is not easy but it is very rewarding in the end. We are still learning, even though we constantly get invitations to go back by the majors, we are sticking it out and serve as a motivation to others doing the same and those coming behind us. DM: You’ve signed two other artists under your label, who are they and are you looking to sign house artists only to the label? LD: We have two artists Soletek, he does house music and Karabo, he’s mostly into gospel, but also does other genres. They are formidable artists in their own right; we just offer a home, a platform for them as well as Liquideep to showcase what they have to offer.

DM: The SA house scene is becoming bigger and certainly more diverse, where does liquideep fit into the whole scene? LD: Liquideep from the start to date has been carving its own path in the industry, we are not very good at following trends, we don’t like a mundane predictable sound, we are always on the look out for sonical (new word lol) gaps that need to be filled. And they are always there. So there’s always space for rebellious artists like us :), and so far we have managed to get our voice heard. We are just running our own race. DM: There’s been much comparison between you guys and another SA house group Mi Casa, what would you say makes you different from them? LD: I think this question need to be answered by those doing the comparison. If we initiated the comparison we would have points or things to say to support the comparison. But the comparison is understandable; the groups are both doing house music with vocals so there’s room for these thoughts to be conceived. DM: The group started with the assistance of Thulani the warrior, what is the nature of your relationship now, are you maybe looking into going into a musical collaboration together? LD: Yes, we are always in touch with Thulani. He since started his own label ‘ Do It Now Recordings ‘ They remixed our song ‘ Rainy Day ‘ which is on Thulani’s latest project. DM: You’ve recently started collaborating more with other house artists, your most recent being with DJ Kent, who else are you looking to work with anywhere in the world? LD: On the welcome aboard project we worked with Larry Heard, Gregor Salto, Melissa Alison, Khuli Chana and Ice Prince. In 2014 we’ve got a lot of collabos in terms of remixes from the likes of Raw Artistic Soul, Mario Basanov, Andreas Saag. 68// D E C E M B E R

This is the app for the shy guys and the shy girls that get the opportunity to talk to their crush but hardly know what to say. This app does away with the awkward silence. This is a great app because one can learn from it of your flirt game is on 0 or 10. It gives you tips on things that you can say and the type of conversation you should stay away from for the sake of the chat. It also teaches you to pay the right compliments and lends a hand to the ladies that don’t know how to receive a compliment. So basically, this app teaches you game. Something that I think a lot of people need out there.

f all the New Year’s Resolutions and things that people want to quit, smoking is the most common. I for one am tired of people around me wanting to stop smoking but fail at every attempt. This app is not for sissies and neither is it for quitters, well, people who say they want to quit but quit quitting. If you’re through smelling like a chimney and making someone else feel like they’re licking out an ashtray when kissing you then this app is for you. The logo of the app is a heart which symbolises love for yourself, love for your family and that you will take good care of your body and your heart. The app shows you the time since your last cigarette, how many cigarettes you have avoided and the amount of money you have saved.

f you’re like me and you have trouble reading the labels on food products, this app is for you. The application lets you scan the barcode of the product that you want to purchase, you can also type in the name of the product to find out the total number of calories. What I love about this product is that it explains the label in laments terms and it also gives a product a healthiness score. You no longer have to believe advertisements that tell you how good food products are for you, you can check it out for yourself. This app lets you make healthier food choices for yourself. I’m not one to follow diets, but I’d like to make better eating decisions after shamelessly going for seconds at Christmas lunch.

his for me has to be the best form of exercise and also becoming zen. This is a great way to get in touch with your spiritual side, becoming more flexible and also get your thinking cap straightened out or back on. I have lied to myself a thousand times about starting to exercise, be it taking walks, jogging or even doing a little more of my favourite sport, swimming. I have had a lot of fun with yoga. hen Steve Jobs envisioned apple products, not only did he see its hardware as the human body, but he breathed life into its soul. iOS is the very last legacy and breathe of Jobs that we have left to feel as close to him as he wanted us to. One day the genesis story of what iOS was destined for, took an unreligious trajectory from the aura of awesomeness that Jobs breathed into each and every apple product. When iOS 7 was launched, some thought, we found the promised land, while some of us, well we felt like that girl that got stood up on her wedding day. If iOS 7 was a kit-Kat, I would definitely take a break, or more. I have had the pleasure of venturing into silk sheets with a number of Nokia handsets and Nokia’s operating system, designed by “you know who”, and more pleasurable moments in a king size water bed with some apple products running on T. After some busy nights with ladies from both camps, I felt like that guy that had one nightstands with a Brazilian and a Russian model, but still felt I got the same personality and “moves” from both. I could have told you about the coding for both operating systems and lied and said Whoo ha iOS is a 7th generation OP system with integration patterns blah blah blah. Truth is, I am that guy that is a religious apple worshiper, and knows zilch about programming or systems design. So what’s my point? My take home message about iOS 7 is that it carries the identity of a dream deferred, Jobs dream for products that have a soul to connect with people. Most South Africans are on the stance that the ANC as the ruling party is delivering services to all because we have freedom. Now we all know the truth to that, right? iOS 7 is the ANC in apple. Question you have to ask is; does it deliver?

ere is the scenario: A three day party weekend is coming up and you’re deciding what to pack? Don’t panic we have your back. To pull the packing skill off, you need to strategize according to your get away plans, where will you be partying and what is the theme around the function. Don’t pack for the worst-case scenario, pack for the best-case scenario and simply buy yourself out of any jam. Bring layers rather than take a heavy coat. Think in terms of what you can do without, not

what will be handy on your trip. When in doubt, leave it out. I’ve seen people pack a whole summer’s supply of deodorant or razors, thinking they can’t get them there. The world is getting really small, you can buy soap, Colgate toothpaste, Nivea cream and Gillette razors in Cape Town or Rustenburg. Go casual, simple and very light. ersonally I think to achieve a formal look, you need to put stilettos in the mix, or you could try flats however I’ve been around and I’ve seen a few things, flats are not flattery to formal dresses. It just doesn’t look right. These should extenuate your favourite features. These could be bandage dresses, chiffon dresses and lace dresses. Don’t forget to accessorise. Keep balance in mind, the more detailed the dress, the less the accessories and vice versa.

n all-in-one dress, by that I mean a dress you can wear at any event. You can change it by what you pair it, for instance a little chiffon dress. For a picnic, dress it down with sandals, and a sling bag; for a night out, take out stilettos accessorise with big chunky neck piece and earrings and for a formal event, put a belt on it and have a nice clash bag, with less conspicuous accessories.
