eaders, It occurred to me while we worked tirelessly to compile this issue that this genre we call house music has many owners and unfortunately many of whom never get the recognition and acknowledgement they deserve for what they have brought to the beautiful genre of house. House like many genres of music has its origins in the underground world of music and in basements of young and uncaring music lovers. We may twist, turn, add or remix that basement version of house which we now call Deep house as much as we like, but one thing seems clear, it is the basement and underground sounds of house that we will always go back to in order to reconnect with the true meaning of Deep House and all too often to find inspiration for the next the big wave, where do you think tribal house comes from, the unsung heroes, who find joy in pure and simple creation of house sounds.

With the resounding underground support base that we have received, it was about time that alongside our usual features, this month we add an underground feature, profiling the underground mix and twitter profile of the month, the underground sessions also make a return with a look at the Zitha Sessions and of cause the usual underground DJ, to pay homage to these young and upcoming talents is to pay homage to the future of house. For this month’s YES/NO question, we ask the question: Do DJ’s need record labels to have a successful career, which leads us further into the question of the impact of record labels for the genre, with a feature article that explores the dynamics of artists and record labels. The Bio of house gives us a brief history of the role these very record labels have played in the development and distribution of the genre for the masses and artists alike. We also have an interesting ride review that takes a look at your ride and its sound system for the best results (I think we can all agree that sound for any house lover is a big deal). And of cause we haven’t forgotten what you party goers like to read about, we bring you the gig-guide as per usual, along with the event to look out for. The fashion team has compiled a comprehensive summer/spring feature, with a few words for thought on what fashion/dressing up should mean to you. T

he existence of House Music Record labels has made it easier for us house music lovers to get the latest/ greatest hits as they hit the market. This platform made easier through CD sales / internet downloads, Record labels are the foundation which many DJ’s/Producers build their careers in house music from. A few record labels that have played an essential part in growing and shaping house music into what it is to date are Sony Music, House Afrika Records, Soul Candi Music, just to name a few. These record labels have been around for decades, from the point when house music was still in its teething phase to the now, where house/dance music is recognized amongst the biggest genre’s in the world. Amongst the first few record labels established around the mid-1980s is the 430 West Records, Plus 8, Trax Records, Defected Records and major record labels Capitol/ EMI around the 90s, were the ones that brought us the productions of true house legends. The participation of record labels in the house music industry as with any other genre has been an essential one for the purpose of growing the genre and spreading it to other shores, also connecting local and international producers, helping in forming and building the relationships which encouraged the growth and experimenting of different foreign sounds and the remixing of local productions by international artists and vice versa. The role played by record labels in the production, distribution and sales of house music has been and will be for many years to come an essential one.

P

oppy D is amongst one of the fluent (mixing terms) female DJ's we have in S.A. For this mix-tape she has created a story read and understood by Soulful house lovers. Although her mixing could do with some work (not criticising), her selections are splendid, carefully organised and balanced. Most DJ's need that and in my opinion, she has it. In this mix you get a taste of the local sound and vibe, the "Kasi feel". This mix should inspire most DJ's (both male and female), that whatever the situation you are in, you can tell your story in 30 minutes through music. This mix is a bell that awakens the underground DJ's to put their work out there and awaken local DJ's.

Busiswa S

he commands attention with her dynamic voice and one can’t help but move to the rhythm of the sound of any song she has been featured in, Busiswa Qgulu, the Durban born poet turned vocalist, has taken the industry by storm. Made famous by her feature in the song ‘My Name Is’ by DJ Zintle, with lyrics that express how women should be celebrated as queens in fluent and infectious Xhosa lyrics, has once again been featured in another hit that has taken the country by storm in the latest song by Oskido ‘Ngoku’. Her rhythm and expression of words has become so distinct to the ears of music lovers, it gives the listeners an insight in the authenticity of her lyricism. Her roots being poetry are evident in her manner of writing and combustive delivery. Many may try to compare her to other vocalists in the industry right now, as is always the case with new comers, but I believe she truly holds her own as an individual. With a budding path in vocal house, it’s safe to say that Busiswa has a long prosperous future ahead of her.

DM:: Who is Baxolise? BAX:: Baxolise is Bax! I’m an enthusiastic young fella, passionate about music & entertainment and a workaholic! I’m definitly a people’s person; always keen on meeting new people. efore I tell you why you need them, let me take you to school: Record Labels are a brand company associated with the marketing of music recordings and music videos, they often also act as a publishing company that manages the musical recording and coordinates the production, manufacture, distribution, marketing, promotion and enforcement of copyright for sound recordings and music videos. They also conduct talent scouting and development of new artists and maintain contracts with recording artists and their managers. Let’s say you’re a new artist and all you want is to get onto the scene and have your music listened to all over the world because you are the next Black Coffee, the future Calvin Harris (at least in your head you are ), but all those dreams start with a record deal. I don’t care if you are superman and you have connections in high places or if you’re sleeping your way to the top. You will not have enough contacts or sleep with enough DJ’s to make you great. production, strategy coordination, manufacturing, distribution… how would you bring all these skills together into one effort to make your music the best and find its way in the hearts and minds of house lovers. Record labels take all these skills and processes and spread them across different departments with skilled professionals who are dedicated to your success. I’m not saying the system always works; there are rumours of record labels that hold artists back, that don’t work hard for their artists and possibly result in the failure of artists. But you have a much better shot being a Soul Candi artist rather than an independent artist tryna “keep it real”. My advice: “Keeping it real” is good for music, but we’ll never hear it, we’ll never love it and no one will ever care unless you have a team of people dedicated to your success. nyone knows that a record label is only good for the benefits. Do DJs need record labels? No, do they want record labels? Yes. Who doesn’t want to be signed? There are a number of perks and benefits when signing to a record label, perks that anyone wants to have, but can do without. Thinking that you can’t excel because you’re not signed is limited thinking and you should know that, Record labels help create albums, amongst other things in order to get your music out there, but an artist doesn’t need a record label for that , Amazon and Itunes are all you need to get your album out there. If you’re independent you can build your own PR team to promote your music. Why would a club DJ need a record label? The most they need is a manager to book gigs and promote their gigs and to get their name out there. A record label doesn’t even do that for you, a record label expects you to find your own gigs. How contradictory of someone to think that you need

to know the right person in order to promote yourself and that you don’t have to sleep your way to the top, well sleeping your way to the top is exactly that and unfortunately that is how it works in our time. The biggest Names in House Music About to Make Their Way To The ADE 2013

T

he annual Amsterdam Dance Event is the biggest house music event in the world and is one event any house music lover should attend at least once in their life time and the 2013 instalment will be happening this October, in Amsterdam, Netherlands of cause! This event attracts over 200 000 visitors to Amsterdam annually and the biggest

names in house music the world over. The event takes place over 5 days, with 350 specific events including conferences, discussions on the developments in house and just simple house loving fun, taking place in about 75 clubs in the city. The line-up includes Bicep, Maceo Plex, Kerri Chandler, Carl Craig, Catz ‘N Dogz, Dixon, Loco Dice, Jamie Jones

and many, many more and of cause, South Africa will be highly represented, with a stage dedicated specially to African acts and the biggest of which, Culoe De Song and Black Coffee. If perhaps you have some money lying around you could spare, the event takes place from the 16th October 2013.


DEMOR MAKES A RETURN I

have not been able to get the soothing, sweet voice of Bucie delivering the words “you are the one” out of my mind, only to find out the producer and person behind this incredible deep house track is non-other than the third member of the trio, Shana and perhaps the most quiet of the three musical maestros. I am also

happy to report that this won’t be a fleeting onceoff, the hit song will be part of Demor’s album offering to be released later this year and I for one cannot wait to hear the rest of the work, it’s also about time that Demor moves from under the shadow of Black Coffee and Shota by showcasing his own brilliance.

don’t know about you, but I seriously want some advice on the success formula that musical group Mi Casa is using, because they just keep

winning. On the day Su Casa was released, the album became the highest downloaded record on iTunes. They did this by beating out international

and local contenders, so it’s no small mile stone, especially considering iTunes is the biggest platform to download music digitally. Another toast to the boys!

Robert Owens T For New Music

he legendary voice of Robert Owens, mostly famous for his feature alongside Franky Knuckles on “Tears” is back on yet another must hear deep house track and this time he has been featured by the soulful collective, Circle of Funk on their catchy groovy must hear tune, “invisible”.

This track is made special by many things, it’s incredible bass and catchy beat, but Ownes not only adds his incredible voice to the tune, but he displays his talents in spoken word in the track, making this one a must hear and marks a return by Circle of Funk to the industry with an impeccable offering.

eet Khathu aka“Kaytee DJ”, born and bred in a province rich with agriculture, land, beautiful women and recently discovered, the same province which gave us artists like Glen Lewis, Da Capo, Darque and many more, obviously also rich with talent, Limpopo.

Born in a clinic in Venda called Makhado in 1991, Kaytee DJ has emerged to be a house hold name in many clubs like Liquidchefs and Stones with his ability to pull a crowd with his amazing mixing skills. Kaytee DJ has shared the same decks with the likes of DJ Tokzen, Monotone, Mphoza, Twins On Decks, Warras and DJ Expression (From The Netherlands), it’s definitely clear that he has a bright future ahead of him, having gotten an opportunity to grace the same stage as such talented artists. Even with his talent, he joined the Soul Candi institute of music and studied the DJ 101 course so as to expand his knowledge on house music in hopes of pursuing a career in house. He was also in the finals of the Redbull competition, where he lost because of technical problems. That appearance earned him respect and street cred from DJ’s and music lovers across the country. Having witnessed Kaytee DJ in action, I can say with no doubt that he is one of my favourite multi-mix DJ’s. He is one of the best multi-mixers I have ever come across, his planning, execution, precision and mixing of songs is just uniquely marvellous to watch, which half the time is proven by the madness you see on the dance floor when he is on the decks. W

hen hip-hop became mainstream perhaps nearly thirty years ago, it was another youth movement that in the eyes of some was nothing, but a passing phase, some didn’t even consider it real music, fast forward thirty years and here we are, one of the biggest genres of music and one of the most influential. Every major record label in the world has a headline Hip-Hop act, it has become mass culture. But the drive behind the success of the genre lies not only in just the music, but how the music has influenced the creative arts, fashion, entrepreneurship and even publishing. Round about the same time hip-hop was blowing up so was another

genre, disco and funk, popular in gay bars and underground basements. Again fast forward 30 years and it is now called house music with several sub-genres, with a big following around the world and is the biggest selling genre of music in South Africa, a country that has become the playground for the biggest DJ’s in the world and a has become breeding ground for some of the biggest sub-genres under the house banner and of cause, the breeding ground for some of the most creative and respected house producers in the world. The house artists continue to raise the bar and lift the South African flag up high for the world to see above all creatively and slowly with better business minds as the

driving force for the highest selling genre of music in the country, but then we ask the question; how often do you ever see a house DJ on the cover of a mainstream magazine, getting the recognition they deserve for putting South Africa on the map and doing the impossible, getting South Africans to physically go out and buy South African music? I’m sure the answer to that is almost never. The only time we see the house DJ’s and artists whose music we have spent our money on is when we go out to a club or go to one of the numerous capacity full festivals that take place almost monthly in the country, a testament to the demand

and love for the genre amongst consumers, and of cause every so often when they appear on our television screens. But is that really enough, are we as consumers really content with the little exposure and acknowledgement that house gets in the media and yet it is the very genre that has put us on the map? We at Deep felt that the answer to that, is no! House music has become part of South African mainstream music, so much so, we hear deep house and commercial house being played on radio and television as part of regular programming. It has become part of pop culture; the influence of the house sound can be heard in

other genres of music and is the force behind the opening of music schools with house producing and DJing as the focus, record labels that are dedicated to the distribution and development of house as well as the influence the hustle of house DJ’s and producers has had on the culture of entrepreneurship for other up-starters in other genres. So why is it that the House music industry, like the hiphop industry as we spoke about earlier, doesn’t have a mainstream publication dedicated to it? There are many internet websites that have attempted to do just that and continue to grow, but non that is about the complete house culture and the people behind it as

those on the decks. Deep Magazine, is brings you to you the complete house music experience, we put house musicians and its custodians on the cover of a magazine, we introduce you to the young custodians of house, whether in their underground studios or in their one rooms around the country sharing house with others, we tell you the stories that you don’t know about the origin of this beautiful genre, we introduce you to the guys that work tirelessly to bring you the sounds of house that never appear on our screens or whose names we might have never have heard of, but whose creations we


know all too well, we take you behind the scenes, the creative process that we seldom appreciate when we listen to those house beats, we tell you why the biggest radio stations in the country play deep house, unlike any other country in the world and above all we salute the hardest working musicians in the country, it’s a fact, the numbers prove it. We are the platform the country has been waiting for, the platform that celebrates South African ingenuity. For once you the reader gets to see house through the eyes of the South African as we see it and not house as the world tells us. Deep Magazine is a creation of young,

ambitious and humbled South Africans, humbled by the raw talent and achievement of SA house musicians. We bring you this publication to celebrate those who by the virtue of their hard work and creations inspire us to do what we love, to create and share. Deep Mag is the future another result of a genre that has given birth to so many. We aim to always report fairly and accurately on the house scene, worldwide and most importantly locally because it is the local productions that have given us this opportunity to speak so proudly of our talents. The Sessions were formed by Sibusiso Ntuli (DJ Zither) and Linda Sikhosana (Menu from Lilac Jeans).The aim of starting Zither Sessions was to expose the quality of musical works produced by various producers around and outside Soweto, also to create a platform for musicians to network. Since DJ Zither and Menu have the experience of performing house music for crowds, they saw the lack of events that showcase different musical elements such as Jazz, Lounge and Soul house music. Basically music for a chilled and diverse market. Zither’s Sunday Sessions started in January of this year, hosted in a normal four room house, moving to different Pub’s and Grills around Soweto in March. The events always features a fresh line-up of DJ’s and artists, one of the many resulting factors of hosting this event is the media exposure. Lilac jeans, the respected house producing duo now part of house Africa records, due to release an album this October, are regulars at Zither’s Sunday Sessions. The Zither’s Sunday Sessions has also helped introduce young and upcoming producers in and around Soweto such as the DJ’s Backyard Tape crew, which consists of different producers: Pondo, Zither, Vil Cazi, Xoli and Schortz. You can find out more about the sessions and what is happening at the sessions on Facebook. The sessions are planning to create an online radio station called Zither’s Sessions FM. This event is aiming at hosting not only Soweto, but also international DJ’s and producers.

I

t was dubbed the collaboration of epic proportions and after a good year of waiting it is finally here, turning the house scene on its head.

There is no doubt that 2013 has been the year of the biggest house releases and amongst the two most anticipated releases was DJ Kent’s The Weekent and the Jullian Gomes and Martin Atjazz Collaboration effort, The Gift The Curse and I have to tell you, I was quite excited for both and upon hearing both, my excitement and joy at the two releases was vindicated. The Gift The Curse is a blueprint for the best Electro Soul one can ever hear. The album also boasts a line-up of the best house vocalists in the world and is a combination of the brightest stars on opposite poles of the world, the veteran Martin Atjazz hailing from England and South African boy wonder whose star hasn’t stopped shinning since entering the scene as part of the G-Family, Jullian Gomes, but you should know this by now and you should know the album by now as well because it is simply a master piece, worth having in your collection of the greatests.

DM:: The Gift The Curse has been in the making for about a year now, what took so long for the project to be completed? JM:: The will to put out Quality music and Logistics. DM:: You are two artists of two generations, how was the concept for this album born? JM:: Atjazz and I had collaborated before on a record called ‘‘Overshadowed’’,we shared good energy in studio and wanted to share more of our sound with people, the best way we could do that is to write and album. DM:: Talk us through the creative process of creating the album; what kind of album did you want to create? JM:: We had no strategy, it was basically get in studio and do something till it feels good and we feel it... We just wanted to write an Honest, Organic, Electronic, Soulful, House Music album. DM:: Are you happy with the final product? JM:: We would never put something out, we didn’t believe in. It’s not fair to the people. DM:: You brought the big guns out for this project with features like Zano, Osunlade and Robert Owens, did you deliberately target these big names for the project? JM:: We have so much respect for all the Artists that were featured on the album. The collaborations with them were based on respect and the desire to write good music with them. DM:: Will the project be released internationally, like your home market of England Atjazz? And what would you say are the differences in SA deep house and the English style? JM:: The Gift The Curse is available in all music stores as well as iTunes in South Africa. Worldwide release will be on the 14th October. In my experience South Africa has a huge market and it can’t be compared to Europe. Deep house is still underground in Europe while in South Africa it’s on radio every day.

DM:: How do you predict this project will be received by the European deep house market? JM:: We are not sure; we always just put our music out there not always knowing the reception. It’s about the music first and everything else second. DM:: Jullian making music with Atjazz, you’ve expressed has always been a dream of yours, what would you take away from the experience? JM:: Yeah, I’ve learned a lot from Martin. I’m humbled by the whole experience. It’s not every day you get to write and produce an album with your musical influence. DM:: Did you find yourself wanting to make music for a specific audience; did you perhaps fear that you might exclude one audience in favour of another? JM:: At the end of the day we just want to express ourselves and put out what we feel, we are truly grateful and appreciative of the support from those who understand our story. DM:: What’s next for each one of you guys individually from this project? JM:: More music. DM:: Will we see you Jullian making music as part of the G-family perhaps anytime soon? JM:: Haha…We’ll have to wait and see. DM:: Lastly, any chance we might see another future collaboration? JM:: For now we are focused on The Gift The Curse, who knows what the future holds for us.

Record Labels Before signing that contract…

For many artists in the industry signing with a record label is a stepping stone in the rising demand for recognition in the music industry. The need to be affiliated with a strong label, forces artists to constantly feel the need to belong to a label. There are a couple of things to consider before you “sign your life away” to the label, as some people would call it. You can’t be too trusting and naïve when dealing with legal contracts; READ THE FINE PRINT...roses have thorns too. It might look like a good deal to take, but what are you getting out of it? The best place to hide something is always in plain sight. First and foremost, do as much research as you can about that record label, find out if it’s an accredited/registered record label in cases where it’s a small or relatively upcoming label; big labels will speak for themselves. The last thing you want to do to yourself is sign with a fly-by-night entity only for it to vanish into thin air with all your hard earned money and material. Look into their distributors and their marketing as well just to have an idea of how things will be operating. Read the contract thoroughly, give special consideration to the licensing and terms, the royalties and the copyrights. It is vital to understand every single clause within that contract before signing it. However lengthy negotiations and taking your time might make you lose the deal, so be efficient and effective.

Hiring legal help to review the contract for you is probably one of the best things you can do for yourself if you find it hard to understand the fine print or the terms of the agreement between you and the label offering you the deal. The most important thing to consider is what the label is going to do for you, and when or how the contract can be terminated and under what grounds does it constitute for termination of the contract. For example, how many albums is the label committed to do for you and how long will this contract bind you to the label. The deal will also include a termination of the contract clause known as right of termination. This will show circumstances of when the contract will be terminated such as failure to deliver or fraudulent and criminal activity from either the label or the individual signing the contract. The last thing to consider before signing is how the payments will take place. There are generally three sources of income: Advances - which is a lump sum paid to you either upon signing or at the completion of the contract or sometimes even for both. Royalties - which are paid as a percentage of the total sales and the different labels have a unique way of calculating those royalties. Publishing income - This is for songwriters, it’s the income generated from the use of the song by another individual and when you perform your own material. Remember to take caution when dealing with recording deals, it might look like a perfect deal for your career, but read and understand, Roses have thorns too.

THE VENUE Just a walking distance away from campus square, Stones attracts the cool varsity kids, with it’s chilled out vibes and not so sophisticated venue. The only thing you can rant and rave about where the interior is concerned at Stones is the VIP area, with its black leather couches, in a small corner next to the DJ booth, which is in the front end of the dance floor. The club is a dream come true for those who love arcades and pool because of the gaming station that’s right next to the bar area. The venue is clearly decorated for the middle class and varsity students with its UV lights in the ceiling and plain red tables and chairs, but even with such it still guarantees an awesome night out.

THE ATMOSPHERE Brown’s (The manager of the place) people skills and interesting marketing strategy creates a perfect vibe for all books smarts and street smart students, so it’s no surprise to see a long queue out from the entrance to the parking lot. It certainly appeals to sexy G. Strobe lights and lazars prevail and ladies with their clutch bags and stilettos, creating an awesome atmosphere for a great night out

THE MUSIC Music lovers can expect a mix of commercial house, hip-hop, kwaito and party anthems, but better known for its love for house music 64/

THE DRINK The club is a reasonable venue for students and people who are balling on a budget. You get good bargain prices for your drinks, with ciders and beers going for less than R20 and bottle of scotch and whiskey starting from R500, you can party up a storm and still go home with a neat bank balance.

Title: The Gift The Curse Record label: Atjazz Records Artist: Atjazz and Jullian Gomes Just the thought of Martin Atjazz and Jullian Gomes on one track, is mouth-watering for any house music lover, the deep, mellow and sometimes jazzy Jullian Gomes next to the edgy, electric Martin Atjazz, but a whole album, what do you get, a mix of the best Deep Electro music you will hear anywhere. My first listen of this album was the mellow to up to tempo track “over shadowed”, no vocals, just pure infectious music and immediately the styles of the two producers are evident, in the most glorious way. The track starts off with a repetitive thumping that immediately catches your ear, continuing on an up tempo mode leading further into a continuous dark bass infused conjuncture of sound that no matter who you are is sure to get you moving some part of your body. This style of production, a combination of soulful deep house, dipped into a mellow electric sound is a theme carried throughout this album accompanied by the best house vocalists in the world, Zano, Robert Owens who lends his legendary vocals to ‘Turn Back To You’ and Osunlade lends his amazing voice to “Philosophy”. This has to be one of the best releases of the year, a technically sound album, with enough music to keep your finger on the repeat button for the rest of the year and an incredible futuristic sound that is a result of a sound collision. Title: Kid Fonque and Friends Record label: Soul Candi Artist: Kid Fonque Soul Candi label boss Kid Fonque gives his debut solo project, Kid Fonque and Friends. The offering can be described as a memoir by the man who’s been in the business of music for over 10 years. It has been described as “a culmination of all his previous endeavours – uniting all his influences and like-minded musicians that he’s met on his journey.” And that it is, with a feature list from DJ Whisky, Zakhi Ibrahim, Jullian Gomes to Okmalumkoolkat. It is a culmination of sound and genres that he loves, with the people has loved working with. With each artist representing a sound we’ve come to know and love Fonque for, deep house, jazz, sonic, broken beats, represented by the diverse range of collaborations. The sound may be a bit unconnected at times and doesn’t move seamlessly, but the music is thoroughly enjoyable.

Title: For Headz Only Record label: Soul Candi Artist: Cuebur I will admit, Cuebur’s latest offering was an unexpected surprise, his first offering did not make much of a dent in the hearts of house lovers and so when I heard “No Doubt” featuring Marissa Guzman, I must admit I did not expect to hear by Cuebur. A very Deep and soulful sound accompanied by the soothing voice of Marissa and I must say the deep side of things suit Cuebur very well. He explores with his sound a lot on this offering, rotating between very deep soulful sounds and more afro up tempo electro, but always with a hint of deep house that never betrays the deep house lover, but is good enough to get any listener to the dance floor. You will also hear the voice of Thandi Draai a few times, who seems to be a favourite for Cuebur, she carries through the offering, completing the sound that makes this album that, really is a one size fits all.
