project 1 : toy design

Clay cluster is a toy developed from Froebel’s gift toy research, the main theme of the making process is to explore finger movements and pressure done on the clay. Magnets are embedded to create a perfect modular toy, with their distinct shapes, pieces can be stacked in many different ways, forming unpredictable structures. Since it is a neverending toy, the playing method is quite diverse.

Discovering what can we play with them is the fun part as well!

Clay cluster comes in a small net bag, toys can be seen from outside. It is samll and compact, you can bring them anywhere without inconvenience

THE SOUNDS SURROUNDING

Project 3 : Po s t I s o l a t i o n

EXPERIENCE THE NEW WORLD OF SOUNDS Inspired by the popping and crackling sounds produced from the vinyl from phase 2.1 analysis and further research in phase 2.3, concerning reverberation in the space and how listening in different room conditions affect the sounds, I decided to do a reverb capsule which allows outside sounds to enter, other significant sounds in the space are produced by users’ movements. No electronic mechanism are needed since the capsule is the amplifier itself.

Isolation | Project 2

Project 2 : ISolation An analysis on my father (selected character) doing his everyday routine : listening to music physically, by vinyl. This project will observe physical movements, the instruments related to actions, other conditions, including sensory distraction in the space.

Isolation | phase 2.3

M A N I F E S TO

Staying isolated helps one to realize and recognize the sense of surrounding better than ever. I will create a space using the theme of reverberation, to enhance the sound of the action caused by user which we nor mally are not aware of. The space will allow users to experience a new world of sounds where every small sound is amplified and enriched, full of echo sounds. Compared to music, it is like pressing the pedal for every action sound.

For materiality, major materials are ceramic and marble which are sound reflective materials, selected for reverberation purposes.

The sounds surrounding

Nature sounds entering Context : Located in natural surroundings, isolated from crowded environment. Users are hearing nature ambience like bird chirping, wind blowing, water flowing and trees sounds.

To let the outside sounds be able to enter the space, terrains around were modified and replace with rocks, one of the natural sound reflective material. The approaching sounds will bounce along the modified terrain and then enter through openings at the edge of the capsule floor, as well as the entrance hole in the middle.

The interior space was seperated into activity area in the middle, and listening area which take place around the entire space and along the elevation of the capsule.

Users actions cause sounds in the space Sound in the space, apart from nature sounds coming in, they are also produced by users actions in the activity area.

In the center, different textures are placed on the ground for users to sit and move their legs freely, resulting in transition of sounds from one layer (texture) to another, inspired by the mechanism of needle moving as analyze in project2.

Listening in different conditions Listening area can be accessed by walking up along the fabric steps, the circulation is fixed, users will be introduced to three seats in different elevations with distinct materials, resulting in unique outcome sounds.

Starting with metal seat, which will bring out high frequency sounds in the space while also damping low frequency sounds, as users continue to the second seat, low frequency sounds is emphasize, and the last seat is where balance sounds can be heard.

Group capsule introducing new activities, introducing new sounds

In this group capsule where three activities from three group members are combined in one capsule, cleaning and climbing activity were introduced in the space, doing them together with listening to the sounds made by yourself create a new experience in embracing the sounds surrounding. For climbing, converted from normal exercide, allows users to move to different elevation, listen to sounds in different spots.
