THORNS UP! A CUSTOMIZABLE STREET FURNITURE SET Cre am N aphatsorn Silp r a ch awo n g

My project focuses on bringing back residential outdoor space in Soi polo, together with the trait of opportunistic household, creative reuse of the locals and housing insecurity, I created an artefact which set boundaries between public and private outdoor space, where the area focused in under the green mile where locals are gathering.

The street furniture set was derived from the trace of strong interactions of locals with the chosen space, it is created under the theme of decoding danger, it uses principal of sharpness to be self defensive, on the other hand created additional elevation by changing views. Locals will know how to decode and deconstruct these visually dangerous artefacts and modify them to fit usage. They can be connect with other pieces and with the site, creating connection in throughout the community.

Under the green mile Soi polo is located in the Lumphini area, in the middle between two famous parks, Lumphini and Benjakitti park, which connects by the green mile, a popular infrastructure use for running, however, it is also a famous spot for checking in and take photos. I, oppositety, interested in the area under this green mile since it is more full of life and traces of living. There is a whole community down there.

Opportunistic household and creative reuse After visiting Soi polo, I see traits of opportunistic household from the locals using and modifying objects to fit thier use, for example, bridges, which are originally used for accrossing, were used to place and hang stuffs. Also creative reuse of repairing broken chairs with heterogenous objects, and adding ad hocs to their house gates.

Expanding territories using household devices extending from their original structure, such as chairs which use to elevate stuffs from ground, using the vercle space. This is due to lack of residential outdoor space.

Modifying sharpness due to housing insecurity, some add sharpness to walls by installing barb wires and broken glass, some, oppositely, covered sharpness using bottles, cloth and plastic sheets

Representational models are made to resemble the techniques of creative reuse household materials found in site and also study models to understand sharpness.

Forms are extracted from interactions with the objects and human bodies with the site, extruded in 3 dimensions and turned to polygons for modules projection

Shar pness outside, softness inside Untouchable for outsiders, approachable for locals.

Using principal of sharpness to be untouchable by outsiders, while locals know a way to hack and decode these sharpness, deconstruct and modify them to fit their uses.

Since this narrow soi is a very residential private area so locals will use the furniture set to transfor m them for clothes drying and placing stuffs.

This area behind the shops will provide space for shopkeepers to come gather and relax.

Locals on the main road love to gather and chitchat during daytime so they tend to use the furnitures as sitting and sleeping device, they also can connect pieces to each other to talk more closely.

The growing of the connections The street furnitures are originally installed in site with five main forms, locals will deconstruct those furnitures to fit their personal use, different in each houses and areas, and bring them to connect to together as sets. When time passed, the furniture sets grown, creating connections throughout the area.
