ello, Hugs and Hues for the Season As a decorating and design devotee, I have experimented with color ever since I busted open my first box of Crayola® crayons. Remember those? I learned primary and secondary color science early, but found that particular knowledge exceedingly boring and Oh! So remarkably restricting- only 64 Crayola® colors? No way! So at the age of six I snazzed up my snoozy blue bedroom walls with my own unique form of rainbow graffiti. Much better. As a child of an extended family of upholsterers, seamstresses and textile pros, I established a strong color sense and, most importantly, the bravery to step out and be visible- yep, I wore fuschia when everyone was wearing grey. In my life, and maybe yours, everything flows from color. So, now I find myself the editor of this design publication at a time of year when color is exploding all around - golden, glammy accessories and adventurous color themes (like …. could it really be….Teal?) serving up delectable visual pleasure and tactile festivity. There’s certainly a place for sophisticated neutrals- hey! I do own my share of LBD’s but I think of them as a wonderful playground to showcase colorful scarves, stunning jewels (mine aren’t real) or a single strand of vintage pearls during a season of fun and frivolity. In this, our inaugural issue of Decor&You® magazine, you will find a collaboration of design devotion, passion and variety selected to tickle your creative funny bone and provide a scintillating peek into the world of décor inspiration, sometimes chi chi, sometimes campy. I hope you love it as much as I do. And, were you as happy as I was when Crayola® renamed “Flesh” to “Peach?”

How can I deck out my dining room on a $500 budget? Whether a dining room is formal, casual, or somewhere in between, it doesn’t take a lot to spruce it up to the next level. Adding accessories to your space can bring in color, display a unique style that becomes a conversation piece and make a room feel pulled together. Art on the walls brings color into the room and brightens up a neutral palette. Don’t be afraid to mix it up! The style of prints does not have to match to look beautiful. Chair cushions or slipcovers for your seating bring in comfort and a touch of style. A shiny
tray to hold drink supplies is functional and adds pop. If the table is where you want all eyes to go, linens and a unique centerpiece is the way to complete the vision. GUEST ARTISAN INTERVIEW What are your two biggest epiphanies in your design career so far? MARY First. Having the chance at 21 to work on House&Garden magazine and being sent to interview and write about the world's most interesting designers at that time. Second. Once having become fascinated by interior design, being given the chance to work with and learn from the late Billy McCarty, a brilliant designer of so much of the late David Hicks's merchandise, not to mention his own work, as well as being trained by the late Louis Kahn, one of the finest architects of the 20th century, considered by many as second only to Frank Lloyd Wright.
You’re often quoted saying, “What is old is now new” - can you explain? MARY When I was researching for my Dictionary of Architecture and Interior Design, it was proved to me so forcibly that there was hardly anything totally new and that almost every new movement, style or idea was cyclical and based on an earlier design - basically you could trace almost every new design back to the original. Thought many centuries earlier. I used to particularly like giving a talk in which I showed slides of furniture from three different centuries and asked the audience which was the most modern. Most people invariably chose a 17th century piece with very severe lines.
What was the best item you ever bought for your home? MARY I think it has to be a large abstract painting by the Washington DC painter born in 1928, Elaine Kurtz. It is all in different shades of pale blue with the odd smudge of rose and looks quite different in different lights. It took me months to pay for it, but when I first saw it in an exhibition in DC, I felt I simply had to have it and it has graced every living room I have had ever since.

What’s on your living room table? MARY On top I always have a simple jug of lilies, nothing else. My table is a 19th century oval which belonged to my great grandmother. It stands just in front of the Elaine Kurtz painting covered by a greeneryblue cloth which gently contrasts with the blues of the painting.

Carry that pattern or color as an accent throughout the next few rooms. • Place a console table in the foyer as a stylish place to hold keys, mail, phones, etc. for the evening. • Make it personal. Let them choose. The bed can’t just be beautiful, give your guest options. Provide an assortment of pillows (down, synthetic filler, over stuffed, under stuffed) and blankets (light & heavy). REMINDER! Experimenting with bed covering is a great way to show your style. Have fun! But make sure the sheets are not full of dyes that can irritate you guest’s skin.

Known as the “Color of Life”, a tertiary color, it reflects a subtle combination of the natural harmony of green with the tranquility of blue. It’s being described in several ways as a color that reflects the times we live in, and represents change and opportunities. A more refined version of turquoise, teal has been used to signify both honesty and strength. accents and accessories for guest-ready tables OPPOSITE: Looking for some major “wow”? Try using sparkle plate chargers with glittery white ornaments (it’s a great surprise gift for your guests)! Keep the decor simple and place settings white-onwhite to avoid overwhelming your decor. An etched goblet will also add whimsy and height. UPPER CENTER & FAR RIGHT: We especially love the use of textures here. Bring a warmth to those chilly winter nights with elements of the outdoors with pieces made from natural fibers, such as the place mats and burlap- wrapped potted cactuses. Simple details like white smooth cotton napkins made special with personalized napkin rings, will make your guests feel warm and fuzzy inside. Here’s a great way to use your hurricane candle holders as a centerpiece when it’s still early in the day and too bright for candlelight: Turn your holders upside down over a candle with pearly sea shells on the inside OPPOSITE & CENTER: Give your elegant table linens some drama by introducing glassware in varying heights. Break apart from tradition and combine a little glam with a sparkly bauble as a napkin ring. This classic tablescape is perfect for a colorful centerpiece of roses and crystal votive candles. LOWER FAR RIGHT: The eco-friendly look is always fresh and naturally beautiful. We like this idea of using tiny simple vases with ribbons to hold soy candles at different heights. Get inspired... You can’t have a party without food, right? Atmosphere and aesthetics affect our dining experience... So don’t forget to showcase your treats! Here are a few techniques to make your table look beautiful and create a distinctive dining experience for your guests. • Avoid overcrowding . The food shouldn’t fill the entire plate. Make sure you are able to see your serving plate around the food. • Stack. Food looks more dramatic when it builds height on a plate. Turn fresh strawberry and ricotta tarts into a showpiece when grouped on a white pedestal
• Don’t forget to add color. You always need some contrasting color on a plate. Rely on your vegetables, greens or fruit for needed color. • Plate in odd numbers. Why? Odd numbers are esthetically pleasing. • Plate your guests’ food for them. It’ adds a gracious touch.

elcome to the inaugural issue of Decor&You. We are excited to be launching, since our philosophy is all about you loving the space you’re in! It is really all about you! We will attempt to de-mystify the process of decorating and make it fun and friendly. To do this, we’ll address the three key aspects of a ... WOW! Decorating Design:
The look; The feel; The function. Without all three, you end up with “It’s OK” decor. But that is not our goal. Our goal is for you to love the space you are in! The first consideration is the function. The space MUST function as you want and need it to— otherwise you’ll avoid it, and it simply becomes a high-cost area; one that is not utilized. Every

the look. the feel. the function.
inch of space in your home must be functional. The second part is to create a look that is appealing to you, your family and guests of the room/home. We want to keep in mind what brings a twinkle to your eye with a twist of surprise and delight. And, finally, your space must feeeeeeel goooood! It has to be inviting—a place that you don’t want to leave. This means that the decorating design options you have in your home must fulfill all of your senses, not just visual. A WOW! Decorating Design incorporates smell, auditory, touch, and taste along with the visual that delivers a unique decor experience and has you craving more. One more thing. . . We love pets and think you might, too. Our pets are our family and we aim to please. Truly, your environment supports all that use the space, it reflects who you are and what you do –easily and beautifully. Otherwise, it is
just another pretty room or existing space. Along the way, we’ll introduce you to a larger community as we try to give back. Through this publication, you will be learning about some projects/charities that are favorites of ours. We feel it is important to build this into our daily plan and not have it be something that we hope to get around to. This is our vision of interior spaces. And that is how we approach WOW! Decorating Design. We hope you agree! We look forward to providing you with new ways to look at your space and love to answer your questions “How do I. . .?” It will be fun and entertaining!
