Did you ever notice how the type of light and the way it reflects affects everything around you? Whether it’s an unnoticed shadow in a photo, the squinty illumination of the mid-day sun or the blush of the sunrise, light changes everything we see, which in turn affects the way we feel. Referred to as “the prime animator of space”, lighting is beginning to be understood for the magnificent power it holds, radiating from the sun, a single candle or your mini desk pendant. Appropriate lighting can enhance your focus, create or deflate your attitude and certainly affect the way you are visually seen by others. I prefer candle-lit dinners over fluorescent food fests, how about you? Research into hotel lighting has established that there is a positive relationship between pleasure and preferencejust in the selection of fixtures that emanate the right range and color of light! It’s a subtle science that can help properties earn return visitors and high online ratings. Coming into the spring season, extended days are a welcome respite from a challenging winter season. Doors and windows are flung open in anticipation of letting the light shine in on ourselves, our homes and our families. Good quality lighting products and carefully thought out lighting plans are paramount to bathing your home with rays that inspire, caress or calm. Who knew lighting was so important? help wanted Do you have a favorite way to transform a room on a budget? Wallpaper! I love how wallpaper can infuse new life into any space by adding just a bit of drama! It’s a well known practice in decorating that if you use the “right wallpaper”, it will draw your attention away from some things you cannot change or dislike in most spaces. You can use wallpaper throughout the room or as an accent wall, especially when the room is missing an architectural feature such as a fireplace. Technology has helped many wallpaper skeptics see the rewards without the risks. I use apps that can quickly show my clients the exact wallpaper in a virtual replica of their room. This allows them to see how adding wallpaper transform their space for minimal cost.

We all need a retreat to escape to. Keep comfort key, and your outdoor space will become the most popular room. Avoid small cramped furnishings that are unsubstantial. Opt for oversized furniture made from material that will age gracefully and grow more beautiful in time. Classic wood options like teak, redwood, cypress and cedar offer durability and, if cared for properly, will resist outdoor elements. TIP: Stick with pillows and cushions covered in outdoor fabric that are thick, chubby, made with polyester filler and feel light when you pick them up. As the sun sets, a soft, intimate glow in your yard makes your retreat feel magical and inviting... And it is simpler than you think. Illuminate your space by placing accent lighting at every level, from the ground to your tabletops to overhead.

Here are some simple DIY ideas: 1. Make your own outdoor chandelier! The options are endless with a simple grapevine wreath and lanterns. Here we used bunches of grapes, vines and berries as embellishments. The key is to make sure the three lanterns are equally spaced for balance to keep your chandelier steady. 2. This beacon is a show stopper. Guaranteed to set the mood for an enchanting evening. Gather and secure different heights of shepherd hooks together. Arrange them so all polls are touching, but hooks are facing outward. Then just add your lanterns. 3. We adore this whimsical vintage look. Suspended glass jars create a brilliant light show even during daylight hours when they’re not lit. Mix it up! Hang them at different heights and hang as many jars as you want. 4. Sweet and simple. Flowers and lanterns are nothing new; but, together, they create a perfect romantic evening. 5. Create a festive mood any time of day or night. Line up brightly colored painted lanterns on your railing. 6. Light up your table. Your guest, will love these mini individual lanterns. Best to stick to nonscented tealights for these little charmers. Always put safety first when using candles. Lanterns are designed to protect flames from the wind and stop flames from going beyond their glass walls, but they should never be left unattended.

Guest Artisan: Henry J Rozewski Pushing boundaries for 26 years in lighting design You’ve been in the lighting industry for over 26 years. What stands out when you think back on your career? HENRY: You know, its my enthusiasm... it continues to build, even after a quarter of a century! I attribute that to my clients ...It’s the satisfaction I get when their lighting becomes a reality they love. During planning, it's always difficult to know just exactly how someone interprets the illumination of their space especially when color, textures and materials change the mood of lighting. I am proud to say my clients think I do this well. What’s one tip everyone can follow when adding artificial lighting to a room? HENRY: Use layers of light in rooms when doing a design. Once you have an understanding on how those spaces will be used, use general, indirect, task and accent lighting. It's important to use lighting controls in those spaces, too! Only together will they set the mood for any event you're performing. You can create a dim mood for dining in the evening or at a maximum lighting level for cleaning the space.

What is your one rule for lighting you see that most do not follow? HENRY: Invest a bit more in lighting in the key spaces you spend the most time in by adding some extra recessed lighting to create focal points and accents. I have had customers cut back from their plan choices only to later have regrets. During construction is the best opportunity to add some additional lighting locations with ease and to create impact in the space you live in. How have the new LED restrictions changed lighting design HENRY: LED is the future, but it's still not there yet in terms of producing quality of true color. If you're looking to save energy, it’s a great lamp to use; but if you're looking to show true color of an art piece, focal point or a display, I still recommend incandescent lamps until the LED lamp designs get enhanced. It’s time to Lighten-Up! Many of us refresh our homes when the days start to get longer, and lighting is a great place to start. Why? Lighting controlled correctly has the power to radically transform any space and how we live in it. Have you started to browse for lighting already? You may have seen that there are tons of choices! It’s overwhelming! Especially if you are not sure which one, what type or where to begin when buying lighting for your home. Like most of us you have already found that relying just on what we liked in the showrooms may not always work out at home. So we asked a few of our DecorDesigners® to help guide us through a few of today’s most popular lighting selections.

Chandeliers! The right chandelier selection will provide a stunning show-stopper for many years to come. Their popularity means there are plenty of options to fit any style for almost any room. No longer are they tucked away in foyers and dining rooms... You can find them in bathrooms, bedrooms and even master closets. Here’s a decorator’s secret: Have a small room? Add a chandelier that sends light to the ceiling. Why? Lighting upwards will add space to any room.
TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND. Knowing the size is a great place to start when shopping for a chandelier. Best Diameter: Add the room’s dimensions together and change the total from feet to inches. For example, if your room is 12’x14’, add 12+14 = 26. The diameter size would be 26 inches. Ceiling to floor: Keep the bottom of the chandelier no lower than 7 feet above the floor. Pendants are incredibly versatile and can be used throughout your home to provide task, ambient and even decorative lighting. Their popularity may have a lot to do with how they reduce clutter and free up space on many surfaces.
TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND. Keep the diameter of your pendant ten inches smaller than the width of your surface area, and you won’t have to worry about any head collisions.

Grouping multiple pendants? Incorrectly spaced will look odd. Avoid this costly mistake by keeping the bulb-to-bulb spacing approximately 30 inches apart. Downward-lighting pendants create a focused source of light from above, which can be used to light up dark areas of your home; However, the darker your surfaces (i.e., counter tops, tables, etc.), the more lighting you’ll need since darker surfaces absorb more of the penadant’s light rather than reflecting light over to other surfaces of the room. 22 I DECOR&YOU® — SPRING & EARLY SUMMER 2014

Billiard/ Island Lighting !
The kitchen island/billiard lighting goal is to illuminate the full island suface or table area. Most are designed to follow “The Rule of Three,” that calls for three identical fixtures for rhythm and balance. Why? Oddly numbered elements are more pleasing to the eye.
TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND. Billiard-styled lighting should be about 1/2 the length of the table and the bottom of the shades should measure 36”-42” above the table. Kitchen island-styled lighting should be about 2/3 length of the island, and the bottom of the shades should measure 28” from the counter surface.

Table & Floor Lamps Table and floor lamps are the jewelry of any room. Even though they typically fall under the task lighting category, these jewels will be key to setting the right tone in every room.
TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND. If you have too much symmetry, it can quickly go from balanced to boring. Adding nonmatching table and floor lamps will help mix it up. Want to know a decorator’s secret? Keep your pairs to three or four per room. This will keep your room from being too symmetrical. Keep in mind that shades, while decorative, have a functional purpose: to filter light. Use the lighter-colored shades if you need light to perform tasks, such as reading, and keep darker or opaque shades for low-light areas, like your foyer, to provide a welcoming tone.

Awakening The spaces throughout these pages all have one thing in common. It’s not that they are light, airy and fresh and, yes, contemporary-looking - which they all are - but all of the rooms are composed of vintage furniture and accessories, many of them from the 19th century design, with cupboards, mirrors and decorative shelves used rather like functional sculptures. This “old are new again” inviting fresh look has all been achieved by using the no-fail approach. When decorating with vintage elements, keep it simple by layering all rooms in white and offwhite paint finishes. Then, go through and create beautiful, impactful vignettes with natural textures and splashes of color to create a light, airy feel.

Awakening This playfully accented sanctuary has a sense of grandeur. The beautiful, freestanding claw tub may take center stage, but what sets the tone of this room is the ornate mirror, painted gray. It provides the perfect amount of contrast to the almost all-white vintage-styled bathroom. Awakening 'There is nothing new under the sun' it says in the Bible (Ecclesiastes 1:19). Almost everything in the way of architecture, furnishings and decorative accessories turn out to be a variation of looks and ideas that have been used often centuries before but with new twists. For someone who grew up in a time when 'On with the New' was the cry of the day, this was quite a shock to my received wisdom, so to speak. There are certainly new ways of doing things, to be sure: new materials, new ways of construction, variations on a theme, even just new colors for that matter or a new finish. Wallpaper creates the look. A small wall becomes a focal point with glitter-accented wallpapering, providing a decorative effect that you can’t possibly achieve with paint. The carefully placed mirror reflects a geometric view of the staircase.
How can a homeowner alter the design of their space? It’s a common request. Here, the sofa introduces a transitional style to the previously traditional living room; adding nailheads creates a personality all its own. The kitchen is often the hub of the home how can this space be expanded? A window seat is not only a beautiful architectural feature in a kitchen, it also provides additional seating for dining in much less space — making room for a larger table in a smaller area. Plus, it adds a bonus built-in storage area for easy access to placemats, linens and decorative accessories just when you need them, and that makes it easy to store it all away when you don’t.

Janet’s Last Word “ I love doing a little bit of the unexpected in a room! In my living room, that was done with an animal print fabric on a traditional-style chair. elcome to our second issue of Decor&You®. We are excited that we received such a fabulous response to our first issue!!! That tells me you love our philosophy: love the space you’re in! It is all about you! In this issue, we focus on items that impact the WOW! Decorating Design: The look; The feel; The function. Without all three, you end up with OK decor. But that is not our goal! Our goal is for you to: Love the space you’re in! First your space MUST function as you want and need it to—otherwise you will avoid it, and it becomes a high-cost area of your home; one that is not utilized. Every inch of space in your home must be functional.

The second part for any element of design is to utilize it to create a look that is appealing to you and the other inhabitants of the room/home. We want to keep in mind what brings a twinkle to your eye, with a twist of surprise and delight. Lighting plays an important role here—albeit a supporting role. And, finally, your space must feeeeeeel goooood! It is to be inviting—a place that draws you in and does not want to let you go! Places that are not well lit are often scary, under-utilized or ignored. You will find that we will refer back to these themes in all of our issues of D&Y. These are the pillars of our Styleprint™ Design System, our methodology for how we create a personalized WOW! Decorating Design for you and your environment. Finally, through this publication, you will be learning about some projects/charities that are favorites of ours. We feel it is important to
build this into our daily plan and not have it be something that we hope to get around to. It is part of the fabric of who we are. This is our vision of space. And that is how we approach WOW Decorating Design! We look forward to providing you with new ways to look at your space and invite you to challenge us with requests for “How do I . . .?” It will be fun and entertaining!
