Welcome

Inside

I saw a family of three generations sitting in a cafe this week, the two teenager daughters were on their phones, mum was on her phone and grandma sat their patiently, hands together in her lap, watching the world go by, waiting for her loved ones to engage with her and it kind of got me thinking. There potentially sat a golden 'nugget', a gem, a wealth of knowledge, a source of good advice and a history lesson all wrapped up in one and she seemed completely ignored and somewhat unappreciated. Don't get me wrong, technology definitely has its place. It has kept families and loved ones together virtually over the past two years when physical contact was not possible and for that I am immensely grateful. But, have we allowed it to take over from the simple act of chatting and connecting with those who sit right infront of us. And what about those older members of our community who may reside in aged care facilities, either by choice or not, they are an untapped resource of experience and potentially the guiding light we all need right now as we walk the unknown path of volatility within our world. What if, we all put down our phones, if only for a moment, and look deep into the eyes of our treasured seniors and talk to them, ask them questions. We may just find the answer we are looking for...just a thought.

PADDY & ROB PALMER

THE COAST’S OWN 107.7 TRIPLE M BREAKFAST SHOW Welcome to our first in person ‘Coffee with a Coastie’. Be sure to listen to the full interview online in our podcast section at www.onthecoastover55.com.au Rob, how did you end up on the radio after spending many years on our TV as a chippy?

Well, I finished telly and the door shut on that. I still did a little bit, but not a lot. When I finished Better Homes and Gardens after 15 years, I spent about a year with my family, because we’d just had a baby. So it was a really perfect time. But it also gave me a little bit of time to explore other avenues. So I went down to Triple M in Sydney and they had this thing that was like a breeding ground for radio, a training kind of thing. It was called Triple M Modern Digital, and they just did two hours once a month. You’d go in there and just sit down with someone, Melissa “Mel” Tkautz (from Real Housewives of Sydney, SAS Australia) is who I was doing it with, she was a nice co–host (laughter). We would just shoot the breeze and have a chat and it was all good fun. They taught you a few bits and pieces, about how to tell a story short, because I could talk for hours otherwise. Paddy still tells me I ask the longest

Uncle Doug, he was the business! You know, everything that guy touched I would laugh at 4

questions in the world. Then one day the phone rang, and it was from the Central Coast, Peter “Yamo” Yiamarelos and he said, “do you want to come up and join the breakfast team up here? We are trying out for a new breakfast host because someone had left” and before I knew it, I was here in the mornings, every day and I’ve loved it ever since. It’s really good. Paddy, you bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to radio. What was the first piece of advice you gave Rob when you started together? Rob: (laughter) Paddy: I knew he’d laugh. Rob: Some things are funny. Paddy: Leave your ego at the door and you know what, it hasn’t worked. No, I don’t know, no advice. We just came into the studio we are in today, and I think we’d met once or twice maybe. We came in here and we did some sort of a demo or something. Rob: What happened was I was working with Mandy Coolen and she was off work for a couple of days and they needed someone to run the panel because I’ve got no idea how the desk works. Paddy: Yeah hopeless, in the London times that’s how they describe it hopeless (laughter). Rob: I did not spill coffee over it and destroy it ether, did I Paddy Gerrard? Paddy: That was once. Rob: Anyway, so he came into run the desk whilst Mandy was away. Then later in the year, when 2GO became Triple M we ended up in the same room. Paddy: Yeah, but we came into this studio for some unknown reason before that and I walked away and thought that was

really, really good, I could work with that bloke. Then they rang one day and said, do you want to come back and do breakfast? I said, yes, I would love to, who with? And they said, Rob Palmer. That’s when I cried. Though I had no advice then, I do give him advice now, like when it comes to the world’s longest question. Thinking back, what was your initial thought when you both found out you’d be working together? How familiar were you with each other’s previous work? Rob: I knew I liked Paddy because we’d spent a couple of days together and we just laughed. I knew he was hopeless on caffeine. The first time we got together I said, mate do you want a coffee? Because I knew how to use the coffee machine and he didn’t because he hadn’t been in the building for a while. So I went up there and I made him a coffee and I tell you, you could stand a spoon up in this thing and I gave it to him. He drank it and he said he didn’t sleep for three days. Paddy: Three days truly, because I don’t drink full strength coffee. Rob: He has decaf. Paddy: That was just one of the many things throughout the time, but it’s been fun the whole way along. It’s just been an absolute ball. Rob: I think we realized that there’s no rule book for this stuff sometimes and we don’t have one. So we just talk to each other like a couple of mates. We hang a bit on each other, we also support each other if we really need to and it kinda of works. Paddy: Yeah, and the thing is, you don’t get offended. Honestly, you can’t get offended. If you do get offended, don’t be in the game.

Rob: Yeah, he’s right. You do need to leave your ego at the door, and he gives me heaps of rubbish about it, but you do have to. We have a BBQ every morning and everyone’s invited and the more people that join us, the more fun it is. Paddy: That’s what we think. It’s like a couple of mates having a chat and that’s what it should be. People say it sounds like you guys are at a pub or a barby having a chat and that’s what you want, and then people can call on 133 353 or go online and get involved that way. We do rely heavily on our listeners to contribute because that’s where you get the best stories. Rob: They make us laugh. Paddy: Yeah, they really do, without them we’d be nothing. Rob, when you first started you said that you felt it was a privilege to be a part of people’s mornings. Before you were on radio, who was part of your morning? Rob: Before I did radio, the first person I remember listening to on the radio was Uncle Doug on Triple M. Uncle Doug, he was the business! You know, everything that guy touched I would laugh at. I just sort of felt like I was going along for a ride on the way to work. I like to get away from all the serious stuff and all the down stuff, there’s so much you can get upset with. If I could spend an hour in my car on my way to my job listening to stuff that lets me get away from it, I would and I suppose that’s a guideline for us too. We try not to be too serious, but we can touch on serious stuff too if we feel we need to. Then if something is deeply personal, we can bring it to radio, and that’s a real privilege to have that platform. Because you can share something that’s concerning to you, but also at the same time 10 minutes later, we can be laughing our skins off about something completely stupid. Paddy: Light and shade That’s what it is. Rob: It is a privilege to be in people’s mornings, and they choose to have you, or they choose not to. And we understand that, we just bring ourselves and if you like us, come with us and if you don’t, it’s not offensive to us. Paddy, you’ve had a stellar career on air. What made you want to get into radio? Who did you idolise? Paddy: Well, once again, as Rob just said, Uncle Doug, Doug Mulray! We were in Queensland and we used to get his audio sent to us. But also, back when I was in Brisbane it was Wayne (Poo) Roberts. He was on 4BC. He was the reason I wanted

to get into radio, as I loved what he did. I saw Wayne Roberts one day when we were at an awards night and I went up and said hello. In the game, you do sort of know everyone, indirectly. And it was so good just to have a chat to him. And I said, mate, you were the reason that I got into the game. And he said to me, you’re the third person tonight who said that. We even get that sometimes now, young guys come along and say, how do you get into radio? It’s great to see people come along, like what you do and say, this is the career I want to choose. But I initially wanted to get into sport, I really liked sport. So I went and did a radio course, but really focused on sport then. Rob: I thought you were going to say but you weren’t fit enough. Paddy: That is true. Rob: He was actually quite the player in his day. He’d never tell anyone though, he was very handy on the football field.

room a little more tidier than you did. Paddy: We found out a lot more about each other, that’s for sure, too much actually in some instances. Rob: I spent a lot of time in the restaurant. Paddy, we worked out golf isn’t your thing and Rob gave you a run for your money in the gym on the rowing machine. Have you discovered a sport that you and Rob can enjoy together that is more of an even playing field? Paddy: I felt sorry for him, I let him win. Rob: I’ve never seen a man so close to throwing up. Paddy: He has a rowing machine at home, and I don’t, and they said have a go on the rowing machine and I seriously was so sick. It was not funny. Rob: He went like he was rowing to save his children for the first 150m then hit the wall. I’ve never seen anyone hit the wall before.

Paddy: I really liked my sport. Then my first station was at Mt Isa, doing sport on air and then one day after about six months the manager said, would you like to come and do breakfast. I said yes and I’ve never done sports since. But geez, we talk about it a lot, which is really good.

Paddy: I tell you what, I’m more of a sprinter than long distance.

You guys looked like you had an absolute ball playing roomies at the Crowne Plaza “Life Swap” … what was the most memorable moment for each of you? Rob: Well looks aren’t everything. Waxing his chest?

Rob: They may be tucked away in a cupboard somewhere. I’ve got some spray on vinyl pants as well. I got spray tanned, I got waxed, I got everything. In fact, it wasn’t wax it was Nair hair removal cream.

Paddy: That was the after dark video. Rob: I pretended to be room service and he just laid there. Paddy: It was really good. But behind the scenes that took a long time. They were big days filming that. It was a lot of fun though. It was nice staying at Crown Plaza. We loved it. Staying there at Terrigal. Rob: You could have kept your side of the

Rob, what’s it like working with Paddy compared to winning Dancing with the Stars and do you still have those gold hot pants? Paddy: Yes, he still has them

Paddy: He still uses it to this today. Rob: You wouldn’t want to leave that stuff on your skin for too long, if it eats hair like that, imagine. But working with Paddy compared to Dancing with the Stars, that was ten intense weeks, this has been three years of the same intensity, I’m not sure how long I’m going to last. No really, I had a dance partner that carried me and now I have a radio partner that carries me as well, so I’m very grateful. JULY/AUGUST – ISSUE 48

TRIPLE M don’t like your job go and find something that you really do. That’s what I’ve said to our kids, find something that you want to do and then go do it. Rob: Ahh it’s easier to say and harder to do sometimes. Paddy: What’s that. Rob: To get out of a job you don’t like and do something you do like. I’m not saying our job is hard. Paddy: I was trying to be philosophical

You have such an amazing relationship on air. Do we see Paddy and Rob out on the street together anywhere? Paddy: We’re going out for lunch today for the first time in six months. Nah, it’s really hard and this is probably the beauty of it, Rob enjoys golf I can’t stand it, I enjoy going to the gym he can’t stand that. Rob: Paddy won’t go in the ocean, I like going out for a surf, there’s so much stuff like this. Paddy: I did go swimming once. Rob: When? Paddy: It was a while ago; the water is too cold here compared to Queensland. We are going out for lunch today and there are different things we go to, but on the weekend, we tend to lead our own lives and we wouldn’t want it any other way. You don’t want to be living in each other’s pocket. We do contact each other most days though, there is a lot of texting that goes on. Rob: Yeah, there’s a lot of texting going on, it’s just stuff that helps with the show the following day. Paddy: and email. Not that Rob reads any of them. Rob: I’ve got about five and a half thousand emails in my work inbox that are unread. It’s a little embarrassing. But

Paddy reads them and if there is something I need to know, he tells me. Zookeeper Dan looked to show you both a great day at The Australian Reptile Park for World Wildlife Day and we noticed a couple of things. Rob, you don’t like spiders and Paddy, you don’t like snakes – have either of you ever played on this with a practical joke? Rob: No, I don’t even like talking about them to be honest. Paddy: I hate snakes, absolutely hate. But Rob is more fearful, he’s arachnophobia to the nth degree. Rob: Well, I don’t know let’s not carry on about it. But don’t touch me for the next five minutes please. That’s my deal breaker, if Paddy brings a spider into the studio at any stage I’m leaving for the day. Listen to the full interview online to hear about the Halloween prank Paddy pulled on Rob. You guys are going into your third year on air together, what do you love most about working together? What would you like to do more of in the future? Paddy: We laugh every day, honestly from the time we get in every morning. No matter whether we are laughing at Rob or laughing at me taking the micky. You laugh every day, and we just say, how good is it to have this job every single day and get paid for it. I’ve always said if you

Rob: C’mon, leave it at the door. For a man that looks as simple as he does, Paddy is an amazing talent behind the desk. We could be mid conversation and he will not only find facts and figures online about what we’re talking about, but he will also find a sound that suits the conversation and it all gets put together whilst talking to someone and maintaining interest and attention in what we are talking about, to make the radio show sound like a theatre. I don’t know how he does it. It’s not often I’ll give him a compliment, but it’s an amazing talent to be able to do what Paddy does. Paddy: Thank you my good friend. You’ve been part of a rebrand from 2GO to Triple M, then Triple M’s 50th birthday celebration in November last year, these are massive milestones to celebrate. What other exciting events are coming up for Triple M? Paddy: Wellll, Lukey (laughter). Rob: I got no idea, do you know something? Paddy: Yeah, yeah about that thing. It hasn’t been announced yet. Rob: Unfortunately we can’t say anything. Paddy: There is still a few final details. Rob: A lot of fun. Paddy: They would murder us if we said anything. Rob: Probably you more so than me (laughter).

Our sincere thanks to Paddy and Rob for their time. Be sure to tune in between 5:30 and 9am weekdays to catch Paddy and Rob Palmer on the Coast’s Own 107.7 Triple M!

Peri/menopause weight gain –

what can I do?

here are many topics to discuss regarding changes that occur during menopause and peri– menopause which is the phase leading up to menopause. Mood changes, sleep issues, vaginal changes, internal temperature changes, irregular periods – just to name a few, however body changes relating to weight gain and fat distribution is high up on the list for many women. Pathology that may be worth checking during this time include iron studies, thyroid function (TSH and thyroid output T4, T3), vitamin D, blood sugar and insulin. If not optimal, these things may directly/indirectly contribute to issues with weight gain during peri/menopause. WHAT CAN HELP? THERE IS NOT ONE MAGIC PILL (SIGH….) SELF LOVE/SELF CARE Be kind to yourself. A lot of life has been lived to get to this point. Identify what you LOVE doing and what lights you up and allow yourself time and permission to include this in your life. Begin something you have always wanted to try, pick up an old hobby, join a women’s circle. Address self–worth issues NOW. Healthy food choices are also a form of self care. HEALTHY FOOD CHOICES Food is fuel and it’s all about balance rather than strict regimes. Crowd out the unhealthy options by filling up with the nutritious options. More leafy green and brightly coloured vegetables daily with lunch and dinner, vege juices – a Mediterranean based diet is a balanced approach for most people. Avoid eating at night after dinner – choose herbal tea instead and avoid eating in front of any screens at all. Rather than eliminating all treats (pizza, cake, alcohol etc), focus on going for quality over quantity and have your favourite thing once a week instead of perhaps several times. MOVEMENT/EXERCISE As our body changes, so can do the type of movement it prefers. It can be disheartening when the body doesn’t respond the way it previously did to exercise programs – this may also be a signal that the exercise regime needs to change. It’s more about moving the body rather than whipping into a ferocious calorie burning regime, unless this feels really good. Consider exchanging

running for fast walking and/or including different forms of movement such as yoga or pilates, dancing, bushwalking. Moving the body most days so increased heart rate is felt for 30 mins is ideal. Otherwise 3 hours a week minimum spread throughout week is a good goal. HRT or bio–identical hormones may help with some issues faced with menopause such as flushing, insomnia, mood and possible weight distribution, but it's not a permanent cure. Menopausal transition is a natural progression and we can’t stop it. If it helps women feel better about themselves, improves sleep and encourages them to get out and do more exercise, HRT it may be useful in the short term. However at some stage HRT will be stopped and then the body needs to go through the rebalancing stage any way. We need to remember we are changing on the inside through this transition and successful weight loss may take many months. Being tempted by fast acting fad diets and ferocious exercise regimes to maintain a 30 year old body is often not sustainable and women will end up back at the same place in the end and feel miserable and exhausted. This natural transition of life is also an internal (mental and emotional) journey as well as physical. It is about embracing, accepting and loving this next version of the Self. Creating an environment for the healthiest version of you at this phase in your life is a wonderful health goal to hold.

Downsizing Incentive BY SOPHIE DOYLE

Are you over 65*, have owned your own home in Australia for ten years or more and considering selling your home? If you answered “Yes”, you may be eligible for the Downsizing Incentive for Seniors. As part of its “housing affordability” theme in the 2017 Federal Budget, the Federal Government is incentivising older Australians to downsize their family home by allowing them to invest the proceeds into superannuation. What’s it all about? Individuals aged 65 and over can make a personal superannuation contribution of up to $300,000 using proceeds from the sale of a family home, which has

10

O N T H E C OA S T – OV ER 5 5

FOR SENIORS

been owned for at least 10 years. These new contributions can be over and above any other voluntary contributions the person is able to make under the existing contribution rules and concessional and non–concessional caps. The contribution must be made within 90 days of the disposal of the home (i.e., from settlement date). Currently, a person must be over age 65 at the time of making the contribution. From 1 July 2022, the age for eligible downsizer contributions will reduce to age 60. Eligible Home/Dwelling To make a downsizer contribution, an individual or their spouse must have ‘disposed’ of an ‘ownership interest’ in

a ‘dwelling’ they held just before the disposal which is located in Australia. In respect to this measure, the definition of the term ‘dwelling’ is modified to exclude caravans, houseboats and other mobile homes. The effect of this modification is that a ‘dwelling’ includes: A) a unit of accommodation that: (i) is a building or is contained in a building; and (ii) consists wholly or mainly of residential accommodation; and B) any land immediately under the unit of accommodation. Contribution Rules Voluntary contribution rules for people aged 67 and older can be restrictive. Currently, for those aged between 67 and 74 years, a 40–hour work test must be met.

Individuals aged 65 and over can make a personal superannuation contribution of up to $300,000 using proceeds from the sale of a family home Under the downsizer rules there is no requirement to meet the work test regardless of age. Individuals over age 65 can contribute up to $300,000 regardless of their age or work situation, as long as the home has been owned for a minimum of 10 years. It means a couple can contribute up to $600,000 for the same home via the downsizer cap. The only requirement in this respect is that the individual/s must be over age 65 at the time the contribution is made. As mentioned earlier, from 1 July 2022 the eligibility age for downsizer contributions will be reduced to age 60. This allows people more opportunity to save a greater amount within the super environment for retirement. Social Security Assessment Age pensioners should exercise caution before considering this strategy. The full value of a family home is exempt from both the Income and Assets test for social security purposes. However, any remaining sale proceeds (after a new home is purchased) will

be assessable regardless of whether funds are contributed into super or not. Therefore, a sale of the existing family home could actually result in the individual, or couple, losing some or all of their age pension benefits. If full benefits are lost so too is access to the pensioner concession card. Downsizing and the $1.7 million Pension Transfer Balance Cap While there is no “Total Super Balance” limit that needs to be considered, such as there is with non–concessional contributions, individuals will still be subject to the $1.7 million Pension Transfer Balance Cap. Individuals and couples will need to consider how funds contributed into super under this scheme can be used. Affordable strength and balance classes for over 50s An exciting and affordable exercise program for people aged 50–100+ is now running at several locations across the Central Coast. Now is the time to rebuild your strength after the Covid–induced period of hibernation! Living Longer Living Stronger is an innovative strength and balance program. It involves progressive resistance training to improve your strength, balance, and mobility, as well as having benefits for your overall energy and vitality. The program was developed by COTA (Council on the Ageing) Australia. Your Living Longer Living Stronger instructors have all undertaken specialised training with COTA NSW which covers the needs of older people and how to work with the types of injuries and conditions that affect us as we age. ‘Moving and getting stronger has a

flow–on effect on your general quality of life. It will be easier to carry shopping and play with your grandchildren, as well as help reduce the risk of falls and other injuries. The classes are also a great way to meet new people.’ said COTA NSW CEO Meagan Lawson. Heather is one happy participant at Charmhaven Living Longer Living Stronger classes. She says: ‘I have been enjoying COTA’s strength and balance program two mornings a week for some time. I follow my individual program devised for my needs, strength, and limits by Amanda Doring to assist and improve my wellbeing. Interacting with a group of similar age and ability makes a great social morning. I love my strength and balance mornings.’ ‘We may never be Olympians, but I am stronger now than I was and hope I can continue to attend for years to come.’ Another participant, Pauline said ‘I thoroughly recommend the Living Longer Living Stronger Program that is run by Mai Speirs on Central Coast.

Fun, interactive class with a caring professional who puts 100% effort into making everybody comfortable whatever their fitness level.’ Living Longer Living Stronger is very reasonably priced. You undertake an initial assessment to develop your personal program, which costs $50 (max) and from there classes cost $10ph session. Most GPs will not prescribe these medications to patients they don’t know whole of Australia and medical facilities are struggling under the burden of the disease. It may also be worth discussing a Covid plan with your GP, so you know what to do in the event of a positive Covid result and whether you are eligible for antiviral medication. Be aware, it may be difficult to source them while you are away. It is also important to travel with a supply of RAT tests, but remember, if you develop symptoms, a PCR may be preferred. Cosy weekend

out of the blue

WORDS BY DORIAN MODE PHOTOGRAPHY BY LYDIA THORPE

“Mountains are the beginning and the end of all natural scenery.” – John Ruskin I do like the cold. It’s a novelty for us living on the Coast, isn’t it? I don’t know about you but our go–to winter playground is the UNESCO World Heritage– listed Blue Mountains. Leaving the Coast and passing Glenbrook, we feel the temperature gradually ebb as we make our leafy ascent. We note the deciduous trees have already shed their veil of leaves for winter. And the grey eucalypts twitch in the lovely mountain breezes. I can almost smell that cosy log fire as I drive. (Mental note: Check the oil.) Our first destination is the Norman Lindsay House at Faulconbridge – confusingly called Springwood. This is an ideal pit stop as it’s at the foot of the mountains – just past Glenbrook. Now, whether you are moved by Lindsay’s work or not is a moot point. Lindsay was an utterly fascinating character and a leading figure in the bohemian Sydney of the 1920s. His output was prolific, including the Magic Pudding series of children’s books. We were fortunate enough to have a tour guide with us that day who discussed his work, including Norman’s etching process, which at the time, was cutting edge (pun intended). Psst! When you visit any gallery, always tag along with a tour

24

(included in admission) so you can attach a narrative to the works. Indeed, it was a thrill to stand in the artist’s studio – where they’ve cleverly left his paints and brushes as if the Norm just popped out to smoke his pipe. In the house we find the main gallery housing his renowned busty nudes. I was amused to see a painting of a well– dressed lady in jodhpurs on horseback amongst the orgy of oils. Had no one told her that ‘dress was optional’? His statuesque model for his work was his muse and later wife, Rose Soady. Working–class Rosie was from the wrong side of the pallet and her story is as fascinating as old Norm’s. And I do like his paintings of cats. He captures their personality so accurately. No wonder. The Lindsays had thirty cats! Post art, do enjoy some indoor rock climbing at Camp Street Climbing at Katoomba if you are so inclined (pun intended). Or if you have bad knees and hips like us, why not make a beeline for our favourite heritage garden in the Blue Mountains, Everglades at Leura. We adore this place. We especially love the historic house. This gorgeous Moderne–style 1930s Art Deco home was built by the textile king, Henri Van de Velde. The garden was built by Danish landscape designer, Paul Sorensen, who by that time, had established a prestigious clientele and was much in demand as a creator of boutique gardens. Set amongst 5.2 hectares of elegantly designed heritage gardens, the views over

the Jamison Valley to Mount Solitary are sublime. And psst! This ‘devotee’ of a ‘Devo Tea’ will argue it’s the best value place for your scone and cream in the Blue Mountains. Why? Because it’s run by National Trust volunteers and those ladies bake the scones themselves. However, if you’re looking for something more upmarket, enjoy a Silver Service version of the Devo (with champers) at our fabulous digs below. Keep reading! We’ve been writing travel for over twenty years. But we have a confession to make. We are not supposed to have favourites. But our favourite hotel in the Blue Mountains is the Hydro Majestic: a sublime amalgam of Deco and Nouveau. We first fell in love with the old gal when commissioned by Inside History Magazine to write a complete history of the place upon its grand reopening. And

Fact box #1: Yulefest Christmas In July 2nd to 30th July 2022 Get into the festive Yulefest spirit with a delectable dining experience indulging in a special 5 course Yulefest inspired degustation dinner menu at the Hatted Wintergarden Restaurant with a glass of sparkling on arrival. what a fascinating narrative, unique to Australia we thinks. Moreover, the Escarpment Group has done an outstanding renovation: tasteful yet practical, with a clever re–imagining of spaces. The Hydro started life as two hotels, joined together by the retail baron, Mark Foy (remember the store in town?). So it’s an eccentric castellated shape. From end to end, the hotel is longer than the Sydney Harbour Bridge (from pylon to pylon). Of course, this makes for the best views. The Hydro is aptly named. When water treatments were all the rage around the turn of the century, Mark Foy imported water from Baden–Baden in Germany (ironically, the best water in the world was right at Foy’s doorstep). Indeed, Medlow Bath (nee Brown’s Siding) was renamed by Foy to promote his new spa. Foy hired Dr George Baur from a health spa on Lake Lucerne in Switzerland to devise and supervise a program of weird and wacky hydropathic treatments (including chilli–infused enemas). Thankfully, these days the only liquid therapies are to be had at the bar.

This ‘devotee’ of a ‘Devo Tea’ will argue it’s the best value place for your scone and cream in the Blue Mountains Interestingly, the health retreat had working electricity four days before the city of Sydney. And renowned opera singer, Dame Nellie Melba, sang at the hotel. While Australia’s first Prime Minister Sir Edmund Barton died in the hotel in 1920. And in 1942 the Hydro was a hospital for American casualties from the gritty battles of the Coral Sea and South Pacific. Besides the extraordinary history, we adore the quirkiness of the hotel. Indeed, one room, Cat’s Alley (so–called because women used to gossip there) is set at a mad incline in–order to join the Belgravia Wing (Art Deco) to the Hargravia Wing (Art Nouveau). I’ve never seen this in a hotel before. And we love the bizarre Sir Walter Scott–esque paintings of knights

shooting, clubbing and stabbing wild animals in Africa – perhaps not one for the vegans. It was hip of the Escarpment Group to retain these original oils and underscores the uncompromising heritage eye of the designers. That evening we dine in the Hydro’s gorgeous Wintergarden Restaurant. Featuring panoramic views overlooking the Megalong Valley, the Wintergarden is a special dining experience. We begin with seared scallops for nibbles, followed by baked red snapper for our mains. This was matched with a regional wine: Black Star from the Marlborough region in NZ. Hey, it’s a region. For dessert, we graze on a cheese plate so we can keep drinking. Looking around at meal’s end, the romantic lighting, the crackling of an open fire, the tinkling of the grand piano, the sweeping views, and the silver service with modern Asian infused cuisine, all coalesce for the perfect winter dining experience.

What a great little Aussie success story, employing locals and bringing the beauty of the mountains to folk Later we enjoy a dessert wine before the open fire in the Belgravia Wing. Here we chat with a wealthy retired couple who, for the first time, have been exploring their own country since lockdowns. Not having stayed here before, they were most impressed with the Hydro. The following day we drive to the

flanking suburb of Katoomba. Now, honestly, how long has it been since you visited Scenic World? Probably donkey’s years, right? You know, a lot’s changed. We visited on a wet Chewsdee and the place was chockers. We can see why. It’s unique. We enjoy the cable car with its glass floor and plunging views of the valley below and a close up of Three Sisters. And the steepest railway in the world is here, too. When you get to the bottom, you can wander and enjoy some history. Katoomba was once a mining community. So we walk through the canopy of winter rainforest while stopping at fascinating exhibits unpacking the miners’ tough lives. Where in Australia can you find a theme park like this? The one newish edition is a cable car experience. It seemed to combine the steep railway ride with the old cable car ride. Once at the

bottom there is a senior–friendly walk to the funicular train to the summit. What a great little Aussie success story, employing locals and bringing the beauty of the mountains to folk. Psst! Less mobile readers fear not. Scenic World is very senior–friendly and created with accessibility in mind. That evening we enjoy a meal at funky Leura Garage. This former mechanical workshop has a rustic–chic decor and industrial car–themed art, offering pizza and share plates. We love the arrangement of tyres and the hoist and petroliana. Great for classic car geeks like me.

The following morning, as we sit with a toe–curling coffee and croissant at the Hydro, overlooking the misty Megalong Valley, we agree that we leave a little piece of our heart each time in these mountains. The Hydro Majestic

Beat the winter blues with nutrition BY KYLIE SPICER

As the weather changes, becoming darker and colder, it is not uncommon to also suffer from mood changes. It can be hard to stay motivated to integrate healthy habits into shorter days. Feeling the winter blues is extremely common but knowing the habits and routines that can be incorporated into your daily life can help beat the winter blues. TIPS TO HELP BEAT THE WIN TER BLUES

There is a growing amount of research that shows how diet can affect mood and mental health, not just physical health. Symptoms such as anxiety and depression can result from certain vitamin and mineral deficiencies such as iron, zinc, magnesium and vitamin D. Small changes to diet and lifestyle can reduce the likelihood of these deficiencies and improve your mood and mental health. PRIORITISE DIET Food fuels both body and mind. We eat nutritious foods so that our bodies can grow, repair, and function well. Our brain needs nutritious foods too. In fact, it’s quite hungry – the brain accounts for around 20% of our total daily energy requirements. A nutritious plant–based diet rich in whole grains, fruit, and vegetables provides our body with the building blocks we need to reduce the winter blues symptoms. Often, people with low moods have diets high in fat and sugar. This, along with high intakes of meat, can cause inflammation in the body and reduce healthy gut bacteria, leading to depressive symptoms. Eating a Mediterranean–style diet with healthy fats from olive oil, avocado and fish, and large amounts of local, fresh plant–based food high in fibre will decrease depression–related symptoms. By cooking Mediterranean–style meals, you are helping yourself feel healthier, happier, and more in control of your life.

28

O N T H E C OA S T – OV ER 5 5

Essential ingredients that help your brain feel happy include: Fruit and vegetables provide us with fibre to support a healthy gut environment. Fibre is a favourite food of the beneficial bacteria in our gut that play a range of roles in supporting our overall mental and physical health. Fruit and vegetables also give us a wide range of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to support brain health and assist in the production of serotonin (our happy hormone). We should aim for two serves of fruit and five serves of veg a day. Wholegrains are another important source of fibre to feed our gut bacteria, plus healthy fats for brain function and low GI carbohydrates for a steady source of brain fuel. Fish, especially oily fish, is high in Omega–3 fatty acids which are healthy fats that, when broken down and absorbed, travel to your brain and interact with certain parts of the brain that affect your mood. People who eat higher amounts of foods containing omega–3s have less depression and a better mood. The protein in lean meats, fish and eggs, as well as nuts, seeds and legumes provide the building blocks of many brain chemicals that can influence our mood. One of its essential roles in the brain is to help make serotonin, our happy hormone, which, when released, makes you feel more positive and have a better mood. Dairy foods like yoghurt contain living beneficial bacteria (known

as probiotics) that can boost our gut health, which influences our mood and mental wellbeing. TIME IN THE SUN Vitamin D is commonly known as the sun vitamin as your body needs to absorb sun rays to make it. This year more than ever vitamin D deficiency is being diagnosed by GPs at a higher rate because of the weather and Covid lockdowns. Vitamin D has been shown to play a role in mental wellbeing. Around 30 minutes in the sun in winter with arms and legs exposed will be enough to get your daily dose. If you are not doing this it is recommended go to your GP to get your levels checked and take a supplement as per your GPs advice. BUT HOW DO YOU DO ALL OF THIS WHEN THE WINTER BLUES ARE GETTING IN THE WAY OF THIS CHANGE? That’s where Accredited Practicing Dietitians come in! Dietitians can support you in achieving improved diet quality by adding in foods with specific nutrients to help boost your mood while keeping it to simple, affordable options. They help by breaking it down into small achievable steps that suit you and your lifestyle. They can provide you with practical ideas and equip you with the knowledge and tools you need to maintain these long–term changes, even when you are battling the winter blues. You are not alone, and dietitians are here to help so call and book in with your local Dietitian today.

the reading corner There’s a reason “it was a dark and stormy night” is a famous first line. Although we make fun of it, it does offer a certain feeling of foreboding, the knowledge that we’re reading a spooky story.

It’s a vibe. And that same vibe is likely why when the clouds roll in and the temperature drops, I instantly feel like an edgier read. As I write this, the rain is pouring down with no end in sight. The sky is white with heavy clouds, and I’ve had to switch the lamps on at midday. So, while the storms rage on, pour a hot drink, curl up under a chunky blanket

BY SARAH TOLMIE

Dearly Beloved

I can really hear the hurt and frustration in your words. Maybe I can hear an unspoken “but what about me?”, or “I am here, why doesn’t he reach out for me?”. Or it could even be, “I have worries and fears too, but I don’t have the luxury to be so selfish”. These would be valid and legitimate reactions, and yet, if were they voiced that way, I am sure there would be conflict. However, if they are not voiced somehow, the resentment will brew. It may take different forms and manifestations but the mid–life moment happens to many many people, and not just men. And not just at mid–life. In my couple therapy practice I work with

READER QUESTION “I think my husband is having a classic ‘mid–life crisis’. He is unhappy in his work. Looking at distractions. Taking up cycling even! I am just waiting for the sports car. I feel distant from him and angry.”

many couples at crossroads, crises and transition points in their lives that create relationship tension, conflict, confusion and resentment. This can be unwanted, or even wanted, changes in health, career, finances, relationship etc. When it becomes most problematic is when couples can’t talk about it and share their feelings and experiences together. This can lead to unilateral decisions being made and actions taken that don’t consider, consult and care for the other. In every and any relationship dynamic there is always an ongoing and natural tension between the needs of each individual and the shared needs of the

couple. Add to that energetic allocation, the needs of the children and greater family unit, and you can see how it becomes a delicate ecosystem of continual change, negotiation and prioritising. When we arrive at mid–life, what can often happen is our time frees up. Children are older, work and career might be more comfortable, and suddenly we can think about ourselves again. As we stare down the next half of our life, a ‘reckoning’ can take place. “Am I happy?” “What’s next for my life?”. What I remind my couples is that they have a dual responsibility. A responsibility to the wellbeing and

authenticity of the self (the ME) and an equally important responsibility to their partner and the relationship, (the WE). The best way to traverse change and challenge is to continue to share unfolding changes and your experience with your partner. Communicate your feelings and needs. Invite them into understanding what is going on for you. Cultivate a shared space to understand each other. Sometimes, yes, we will need to re– evaluate our lives and make changes. It is OK to take time for yourself and immerse in a time of rediscovery of self and create a ‘next phase’ in your life, but don’t forget to bring your partner along for the journey with you. That is not to say it is easy. You will have to negotiate new needs and, yes, the road might be bumpy. You must not relinquish your relationship agreements. You can still honour your “journey” but that does not mean you stop consulting,
