dearq 15: Le Corbusier’s Collaborators (2nd Number) In circulation: December 2014

Call for Papers Closing Date: 15th April 2014 In the past call for papers of dearq Journal of Architecture numerous high quality articles were submitted, which is why it was decided to prepare a second number on the same topic: Le Corbusier’s collaborators. In the archives of the Fondation Le Corbusier in Paris there is a document that contains over a hundred names and details of people who, from 1924 to 1965, worked in the famous atelier of the Franco-Swiss maestro. A revised list can be found published in the opening pages in the different editions of the book Le Corbusier 1910-1965. What of the lives and works of these collaborating architects who were from all over the world and had diverse interests? With this question in mind, dearq’s thematic 14th edition researches and seeks to find out more about the lives and works of Corbrusier’s Collaborators. There are myriad reasons why young architects went to Paris. One of the many reasons was to get to know the works that were jointly designed by Le Corbusier and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret and the thinking that was behind them: through his many publications, the books, magazines, and articles such as the magazine L’Espirit Noveau, a joint production between Le Corbusier and Amadeo Ozenfant. It is worth mentioning as an example, that among these many architects are two young Argentinians (Juan Kurchan y Jorge Ferrari Hardoy) who point out how important it was for them to have had the example of Le Corbusier’s work during their undergraduate studies as a counterweight to the heavily academic teachings related with the Schools of Fine Art. Ferrari states that, “Le Corbusier believed that architecture could not be taught but was instead learnt. It was something like the craftsman of the Middle Ages, when the student worked side by side on projects with his teacher, not only viewing the plans, but touching the materials with his own hands with a modesty that the apprentice has whilst helping the master craftsman”. (Conference on Le Corbusier [typed text], 1965, FHA J015). On returning to Argentina, these architects, together with Antoni Bonet i Castellana and others, founded the Los Australes group. Through his work the Swiss maestro has created a worldwide architecture school, the purpose of which is to help train young people in different countries. The previous example of the effects that Le Corbusier has had on the teaching and practice of architecture is a useful reference for the international search that dearq is undertaking with

this current call for papers. It is a question of reflecting upon the result of the encounter between Le Corbusier and architects from the rest of the world in number 35 Rue de Sèvres, where the attention was centred on the prominence of the collaborators and not on the maestro. We want to discover what was learnt; how this is reflected in the work of the collaborators; and what have been the results of these encounters over the ninety years that now separate us from the moment in which the famous atelier in Paris opened.
