By Ra’Vae Edwards Sprint car fans of all ages recently mourned the loss of one of the sport’s most well-known and loved drivers both in MidMissouri and across the nation. Jesse “The Rocket” Hockett lost his life on May 26th through a fatal electrical shock while preparing his race trailer for an upcoming race. He was 26 years old. Hockett, although young in age, was a veteran to the sport that was not only his life, but was his passion and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all race fans. Former Lake Ozark Speedway track announcer Scotty Cook became acquainted with Hockett during his early racing years and will forever remember him to be a unique person with a spirit like none other. “What Jesse did in his race car was only one of the amazing things about him,” Cook said.

“No matter how popular he became, he always remembered where he ‘cut his teeth’ and anytime he could race in Central Missouri, he was there.” Cook said he met Hockett in 2002 when he raced his first season as a sprint car driver at Capital Speedway in Holts Summit. “That was the last year the track was in operation, and Jesse was a young man and was always ready to hit the track every chance he had,” Cook recalled. “We became very good friends. He certainly had a funny sense of humor and we just had a way with each other… a lot of silliness, but he was very motivated and was already an incredible person, even at such a young age.” Cook said a number of things stand out when thinking or talking about Hockett, including his racing talents and the unbelievable legacy he has

left behind, as well as the number of people he touched in Central Missouri and across the United States. “But the one thing that I always respected Jesse for was how he constantly remained true to his roots,” Cook said. “His family was very important to him and he was always true to them and they supported him 100 percent.” Despite his display of confidence on the track, Cook said Hockett was shy, yet friendly and likely one of the most humble persons in the racing community. “Jesse never met a stranger,” Cook said. “He was always smiling and willing to give his autograph to anyone. He was definitely one-of-a-kind.” Just a few short years ago, Hockett’s cousin, best friend and crew chief, Daniel McMillian, died after a terrible car crash. Cook said the two were shadows of each other and

Hockett was devastated. “He took the loss and used the grief as fuel to propel himself in his racing career,” Cook said. “It was right after Daniel’s death that Jesse hit the national spotlight and started winning races all over the United States. I always admired him for the way he handled such a terrible a loss and picked himself up and kept going. I think this is a classic example of how he lived his life…facing adversity head on and he always kept on digging.” “I really believe if he were here today, he would definitely want everyone to move on and I can still hear him saying… ‘Let’s go racing!”

Good mornin’ darlin’s! Your Aunt Ildee and Uncle Al spent Memorial Day weekend with a daughter and family in St. Charles, to celebrate her birthday, and be with their youngest son who is studying in New York. Their other two children and their families spent each day with their parents, and us. There are six great-grandchildren, and I do mean GREAT! The toys their grandparents have bought for them simply amaze me. I was a depression day child, and remember the simple things that my favorite aunt and I played with when we lived near Henley. Aunt Alphia is about 4 years older than I, and she was so wise and creative! They don’t make linoleums like they used to. The reason I say this is because today’s floor covering won’t bend as well for doll furniture. My Aunt Alphia bent and folded pieces of discarded linoleum,

warmed by the summer sun, into sofas, beds, and tables. The old wooden matches “used” of course, were the make-shift dolls for this colorful furniture. Little girls can play cars as well as little boys. No boy has ever made a curving dirt road with a zinc Ball Mason jar lid as well as my aunties. The match dolls rode on the milk glass insets in the lids as proudly as if they were kings and queens. We could go as fast as we wanted to down the road, and around its curves without losing a passenger. I doubt that we deliberately crashed into each other as boys certainly would have done. The day came when we ventured out into the road, a narrow dirt road. There were very few cars in the area. I think that it went past the Spalding’s in one direction and to the road that went to Henley, the most wonderful little village on earth,

if my memory serves me right. Like little girls today, you just can’t play “right” without dolls, and match stick dolls would be useless for such an important excursion as our first walk down the road. Once again, Aunt Alphia provided us with dolls. These could walk with us. Oh, they were not battery operated, but these 14 to perhaps 16 inch stick dolls did what they were supposed to do. Their hair was shiny corn silk tied on the top of each stick. An arm to hold them by was just binder twine, and as we held on to it, when we walked, it, with a slight movement upward of our hands, walked also. How happy we were in those days! The great depression could not and did not destroy our wonderful, carefree childhood.

Dear Lord, Thank you for the blessings, I often fail to see. Honey for my biscuits, a cup of sassafras tea. Birds singing in trees by my window, songs I love to hear. The colorful flowers of springtime, when they first appear. Thank you for the stately oaks, majestic limbs laid bare. For sparkling green leaves you give each one, for formal wear. Forgive me, for these blessings, I so often fail to see. For the glories of your Creation, so freely shared with me. Amen.

Fishy Nickels By Beth McCain The three boys were out for the summer and they were always left to their own devices, as long as they came home for dinner on time. They didn't have much pocket money in the morning but by the end of the day they had enjoyed their share of Grape Ne-Hi and ice cream bars. They had figured out a way to make money and even bring a little extra home to their mother. They always told her they found it on the pier which was partially true if you looked at it that way. Richie, Georgie, and Billy were one year apart from one another. Their mother expected Richie, but Georgie and Billy were complete surprises and having three small boys at home was a challenge. But as they grew they became their own best friends, getting up at the crack of dawn and getting their chores done so they could go out and make some money. Their mother and father had no idea what they were doing but every once in a while when Mother would wash the boys' jeans she'd find a shiny coin among the marbles and thread. “Where are they getting money?” she wondered. Money

was a scarce commodity in their house as well as in their coastal town. Many of the old timers had retired and all their offspring had to leave town to find work. The diehards stayed, though, trying to eke out a living until times got better. When Mother would find the change she would put it in the empty jelly jar for safekeeping. Maybe she could buy the boys an ice cream with enough of the change. Little did she know that her boys were making money hand over fist on the pier, but they never uttered a word. Maybe they thought Daddy would make them hand it over or maybe they didn't even think that the family could use it. All they knew is that every summer they made a haul, no one knew about it, and they planned to keep it that way. Each morning they would clamor downstairs — all legs and arms — to get to the table first. Mother would always make a nice breakfast of biscuits, and sometimes eggs when they could afford them. She'd wrap up the extra biscuits with a little bit of bacon lard in the center for their lunch and off they'd go to play away the day. They'd always get out the door without their hair brushed but being ten-, eleven-,

and twelve-years-old it didn't matter much. Girls wouldn't come into the picture for another year or two. Georgie would stick cardboard in the bottom of his shoes to cover the holes and it worked just as well as a new pair. He knew when Daddy and Mother could afford new ones they would. Having money didn't matter to kids in those days when it came to playtime. There weren't toys around or any fancy video games back then; only their combined imaginations and ingenuity. It was Billy's idea. One day when they were on the pier they each had a stick with a string in the water. Their feet hung over the pier as they put their 'fishing poles' in the water. They tied a piece of biscuit on the end of the hook Billy had found and dropped it in the water. Billy got one first. He pulled up the fish and it was a doozey. He was going to take it home to Mother to cook for dinner. It would sure be good with her biscuits. But a couple walking down the pier interrupted his train of thought. “My, that is a big one for such a little boy,” the woman cooed. They were obviously tourists just

www.addmydeal.com visiting the quaint little coastal town. The man and the woman were eating taffy as they strolled along the pier. “How much you want for that?” the man asked. Billy looked around to make sure the man was taking to him. Georgie leaned over. “He's talkin' to you, Billy.” “Uh...a...” he stammered. “A nickel!” piped Richie. “Do you want the fish, Mildred?” The woman smiled, “Oh, yes. I would love to have fresh fish for supper.” The man forked over a nickel and Billy handed him the fish. Billy looked at his brothers and that was all it took. A business had been born. They began to save those nickels after drinking all the Grape Ne-Hi and ice cream they could handle. They took some home to Mother but they weren't really sure what to do with the money. “Maybe we should buy a fishing license.” George was always the one worrying about the law coming and shutting down their operation. But Richie had taken care of that. They started coming to the pier way before the sun came up. In those days you could let your kids roam from sunup to sundown without a (Continued on pg 11)

www.addmydeal.com (Continued from pg 9) worry. They began fishing early and rigged a net under the pier for all their fish. They would catch way over the limit if they had a limit but business was booming. The boys charged five to ten cents a fish depending on what the tourist looked like. If they didn't like them they would charge them more, but the out-of-towners always paid. By noon they had enough money to get lunch and play the afternoon away. They used the biscuits with bacon for bait and when the day was over they would go home with a couple fish and some extra dimes for Mother. They would bury their earnings in the sand near the pier. They weren't really sure why they

hid it from their parents. It wasn't like they were doing anything wrong but it was a brother thing, until one day they got up early and Sergeant McHalligan was waiting for them at the pier. “All right boys. I hear you been catching fish and selling them.” “It ain't no crime!” protested Richie. “You got a fishing license?” Georgie knew it. They were in trouble with the law just like their Uncle Reggie. “Aw, man!” Billy exclaimed. “Your folks know about this?” It was obvious by their faces that their parents didn't know. “Tell you what, boys. No

more fishing without a license and I won't tell your mom and dad. They don't need to be worrying about you three. Did you spend all the money?” Billy opened his mouth but Georgie pinched him from behind. Billy closed his mouth quickly. “Yeah,” Georgie lied. “We used it up on stupid boy stuff.” The sergeant softened. “I remember being your age. I would have done the same thing. Now off you go.” The boys walked off looking defeated until the sergeant left and they all began to beam. They had two jars full of nickels and were out of work... for a moment. www.addmydeal.com (Continued from pg 11) “How far is the pier in Middleton from here?” Richie asked. “About a mile's walk,” Georgie said. “Think you could do it, Billy?” “'Course I can.” The boys began walking, taking off their shoes and slinging the laces over their shoulders. They walked barefoot

along the sand. It was a beautiful morning and the breeze felt great. “What should we do with the money?” Richie asked. “I think Mother could use a new dress... What do you think, Billy?” “I think that sounds good. Want to spend them nickels?” “Sure do. Anyway there's more where that came from.”

Anyone gazing at the beach that morning could see the silhouettes of three boys moseying down the sand with their hair sticking up, holding their fishing rods, biscuit packs, a nickel jar, and thoughts of their mom. And all three boys were fixing the cardboard in their shoes. It never occurred to any of them to buy new shoes; only a new dress for their mother.

Ferries, Bridges, the Osage and the Lake By H. Dwight Weaver Since the beginning of settlement along the Osage River in the 1830s, travelers have often found the river difficult to get across, not because of deep water or flooding but because of the scarcity of ferries and bridges. After the 1850s ferries began to make their appearance at strategic points along roads that were the most heavily traveled. Suspension bridges (swinging bridges) made their appearance in the late 1800s, the first one being built at Warsaw in 1895. Joe Dice, a native of Warsaw, who helped in the construction of that bridge, later achieved local fame by building more than 30 other suspension bridges. Many of them spanned the Osage River. In Miller County, however, Dice built half a dozen bridges across Tavern Creek. Most of those bridges are now gone, replaced in recent

years by modern structures. The coming of Lake of the Ozarks only complicated matters for the natives and tourists in Benton, Camden, Miller and Morgan counties. Several suspension bridges that spanned the Osage were demolished with the coming of the Lake. Linn Creek’s swinging bridge, a toll bridge that carried State Highway 5, fell victim to the Lake. With its demise, the Gov. McClurg Ferry was established because the Lake severed Highway 5 where it crossed the Niangua River and the Osage River. Bridges at those points were not operational until 1937. After their construction the Gov. McClurg Ferry was out of business. The image that accompanies this article shows the Gov. McClurg Ferry, photographer unknown. Several other ferries continued to operate for a few years at different locations after the Lake was created but eventually closed. Various communities

bordering the Lake and its major arms have, at one time or another, agitated for either ferries or bridges at their locations but have not been able to get county or state support for such projects. For the past 60 years it has been possible to boat Lake of the

Ozarks from the Hurricane Deck Bridge to Warsaw without encountering a single car ferry or passing beneath a single bridge. It seems rather remarkable to think that a bridge needed so badly for so long to connect the east and west sides

of the Lake via Shawnee Bend did not get built until the 1990s. Today, the Community Bridge is that link. One can only wonder if any bridge will ever be built anywhere across the Lake between Hurricane Deck and Warsaw.
