Lighthouses at Lake of the Ozarks© By Dwight Weaver Lighthouses have appealed to the romantic at heart for hundreds of years but it has traditionally taken a very special individual to endure the isolation and loneliness that once came with the manning and maintenance of a real lighthouse. Since the days of the Egyptians, who built the first recorded lighthouses on their coastlines, lighthouses have served a very practical and life-saving purpose – warning the pilots of ships at sea or on inland waters of dangerous coastlines, shoals, reefs, rocks and other hazards. The earliest of lighthouses had lights at the top of their towers that could be seen for only a few miles but by the 1840s prism

lights came into use with a much greater range of visibility. Various government entities were charged with lighthouse oversight on U.S. coastlines until 1939 when the U. S. Coast Guard took over. Modern lighthouses no longer require the presence of a person on site to man the tower and maintain the light -- it can all be done by remote control. Today’s lighthouses are generally steel towers with a flashing light on top. As a consequence of modern technology, the traditional lighthouses of old that still stand are now largely tourist attractions. Novelty shops sell all kinds of small decorative lighthouses for shelves and lawns at home and there are many miniature lighthouse collectors and light-

house enthusiasts. Traveling the waters of Lake of the Ozarks one will discover that small decorative lighthouses abound, sitting on hillsides, buildings, and retainer walls. But there are some that stand 10 to 15 feet tall. One of the most attractive decorative lighthouses stands near the head of Cole Camp Creek Cove at the Lake’s 79.5 mile mark. On private property, the lighthouse is beautifully made of rock (see photo by the author 2004). The two most memorable lighthouses ever on the Lake were built as novelties in the Lake’s early years. One was an eyecatching feature of Lighthouse Lodge along the north shore of the Lake within sight of Bagnell (Continued on pg 4)

It is the lighthouse that was built at the junction of the Grand Glaize Arm of the Lake and the main channel called the Pla-Port Lighthouse that towered the highest and actually had a rotating light at its top (see photo circa 1940, photographer unknown). It is said the light could be seen out upon the Lake at night for a distance of 14 miles. It was promoted as the only “operating” inland lighthouse at that time. The Pla-Port Lighthouse was built in the early 1930s and survived to the early 1960s. Ironically, it was being torn down at the same time that the last traditional lighthouse was

being built along the U.S. coast, known as the Charleston Light. To read the full story of the Pla-Port Lighthouse and Resort see

Fuel Costs

Surge COMMENTARY By Stephen Monday In the last several years, Americans have witnessed a huge increase In the cost of gasoline. What are the factors that are causing these soaring costs? There are several - firstly, supply and demand. This rising price of crude, (up to $120 per barrel) as well as the cost of refining it, have greatly impacted the amount we are having to pay at the pump. There are political factors as well. China is our largest competitor concerning demand on who gets the crude, as well as a few other smaller countries. How much will the market bear concerning costs? OPEC has continually sought to answer this question, but instead a portion of the 600 billion they earned last year to increase refinery capacity, they chose to allow the huge demand for oil as a license to increase the price of crude in order to see just how much the market can bear. They love the competition of the other nations’ demand for more oil for it just gives them a reason to charge more per barrel. Do you think they are going to scramble to spend billions on a new refinery when all they have to do is keep “raking it in”? With America alone guzzling 21 million barrels a day, while only producing six million barrels a day - nearly three quarters of our daily

consumption must be bought elsewhere. What is the average American to do? There are number of things that help reduce fuel consumption. Fast starts, as well as highway speeds in excess of sixty miles per hour, contribute to the poor MPG. Excess RPM, low tire pressure, leaving vehicle running while waiting, all of these are factors that waste fuel, and can be gotten around. If Americans would simply carpool more, make less trips to the store by

stocking up when they do go we could show the major oil companies that we can cut back. If enough people decide to implement these alternatives, the big oil companies would get the message, and would reduce the price. After all - they WANT us to use more and more, and as long as we continue to change nothing, and still demand our 21 million barrels a day and pay their price, we are just sending them the message that it is okay; we can afford it. l

Eldon Employment

On the Rise

Acquisition of Keiper Plant means Stronger Job Outlook Lee McCain It's the economy, stupid. How many times have we heard that line uttered; from the White House, to the blogosphere, and from every talking head with a microphone? Thing is, those four oft-repeated words pretty much tell it like it is. When the economy is rosy, all is good: The intricate network that is the infrastructure of a solid economy works just dandy. A company comes to town, employs a couple of hundred locals who in turn earn a living wage. Those people invest in the economy through trips to the grocers, the mall, the movies, and the local restaurants. Each of these businesses enjoy a rise in sales that require them to increase their own hiring which puts more people to work, who then reinvest their own earnings back into the expanding economy. When it doesn't work, we have the recent economic stagnation that has been prevalent throughout Missouri over these past years. But in Eldon, as well as in a number of other central Missouri zip codes, it looks like the times, they are achangin' — and this time, they're a-changin' for the

betterment of the folks who have borne the brunt of this recession. It looks like the jobs are coming back. Early last month Johnson Controls signed a purchase agreement to acquire Keiper and the automotive sport and specialty seat business of Recaro. The acquisition includes about 4750 employees globally in seven countries and it affects the Keiper plant in Eldon. According to Johnson Controls, the Eldon plant will require additional workers just to keep to commitments they currently have within the auto industry. But with Johnson Controls' ever expanding market share— they are involved in just about every aspect of the automotive industry today— they foresee even more expansion at the Eldon plant, perhaps as soon as the year's end. According to a member of plant management who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on behalf of the company, the expansions in the orders that he already knows about will likely require more hiring by summer. The Eldon plant's expertise includes the complete engineering

process and technologies used to produce metal seat components, structures, and mechanisms. The product range encompasses mechanisms that adjust the seat's length and height, recliners that adjust the backrest position of vehicle seats, and rear seat latches. Johnson Controls, in a media release issued shortly before the Keiper acquisition, expects the plant purchase to strengthen its competitive position in key seating components with expanded opportunities to develop new differentiating products and technologies. In a recent report by Daniel Winn, a KRCG Reporter and Anchor, the recession hit Eldon hard. Three car dealerships went out of business, and Fasco, a company that used to occupy a large industrial building on the city's East side cut hundreds of employees. And while the town of 4,800 residents definitely felt the economic hit—Fasco lost 300 jobs in one fell swoop— there are signs that an upswing is occurring. Fasco still employs about 50 locals, and the city is doing everything it can to provide resources that support business development. One indication is

13 the 600 feet of runway that was added to the airport runway in order to allow larger business aircraft into Eldon. Eldon City Administrator told Winn that the focus is on providing the infrastructure that will enhance the local employers' ability to easily move product and materials in and out. This means improvements in roads, transportation, and providing a business friendly environment to attract even more job providers in the future. In the meantime, the news over at Keiper is that business is picking up and shifts are being added. Proof positive that Eldon is on its own economic fast track. l Johnson Controls has signed an agreement to acquire Keiper in Eldon, MO., whose products include mechanisms to adjust the length and height of a vehicle's seats.

Intermingled among the orchids are pieces of art that reflect the vibrant beauty of Maya and Aztec culture. Works include sketches of ancient Yucatán, ceremonial items, photographs and more. Admission to Orchid Show 2011 is $5 in addition to regular garden admission ($4 to $8; free for children and garden members). The orchids remain on display through Sunday, March 27. For more information, call 314-5775100 or visit www.mobot.org.

Poetry in Motion The Maple Tree By Richard Brown In my quiet yard I planted a tree, so alone it would grow exactly like me. A pretty little maple so young and so lithe, leaves soon developed seemingly overnight. My little tree grew, stalwart and so strong, one evening I heard it singing it was a beautiful song! "Why are you singing" said I to my little tree. "You're supposed to be sad and lonely exactly like me," it then replied "Dear friend the life that you gave me and life is so long, The beauty that surrounds us has taught me this song" The first note from a bluebird that leaned on my branch Then more from the honeybee that lives on your ranch With kindness you planted, allowed me to grow Now I've thought of a plan I'd like you to know After your weary day of toil and strife, Hang all of your troubles on my branches tonight Then with peace while your troubles are far, far away Reflect on the good things that happened today Carefully I hung on each strong gentle branch Each trouble I'd received today even only by chance. Ethereal peace and rest then I did see My troubles left swinging on my strong little tree gentle breezes secretly whispered before deep sleep Tomorrow retrieve your troubles for a short time to keep Crystal sunrays exploded this night into dawn, Awakened me in happiness, unknown for so long. I'll gather up my troubles, give my tree a rest, Easily shoulder this day and give it my best. My tree had drooped, but was proudly standing strong I looked for my troubles but they were all gone!
