ST. LOUIS 3 Saint Louis Teen

Conquers Anxiety Writes Book that Helps Thousands

Everywhere you need to be. www.archcitydeals.com

By Lee McCain We've all heard about them: the genius kids who accomplish more before they are finished with Clearasil than us grownups do in our entire lives. Well the Saint Louis suburb of Florissant has their very own version in the form of nineteen year old Hady Elmashhady, a lad who is currently attending Saint Louis University studying philosophy and pre-med. Okay, fair enough. But in addition to a college workload that would make the eyes of a fourth-year student fall out, Elmashhady spends every spare moment perfecting his (Continued on STL PG 4)

(Continued from STL PG 3) passion and talent for the martial art known as Muay Thai, an extremely intense form of boxing that is the national sport of Thailand. Oh, and his book was published over the summer and is now available in every developed country on the planet. "I definitely want to continue to write while being a doctor," the lightweight but muscular teen said, "and if I could bring something new to the medical community or help people in some other way, that would be awesome," Elmashhady declared. But let's back up a second. He wrote a book? That was published internationally before his eighteenth birthday? "I'm not surprised in the least," said publishing executive, Joachim Alexander during a telephone interview from his home near Portland, Oregon. "This fellow is amazing, both as a writer and as a

human being, and I'm not surprised that he has the college goals that he has. In my opinion, he'll not only reach them, he'll surpass them somehow." Alexander, a native of Denmark who has been in the publishing field for over 30 years, said he recognized the teen author's talent as a writer, "from the first draft I read. On top of that, his personality led the way with our staff. We found ourselves wanting to help him in any way we could, especially because of the subject matter of his book." The result of the many months of collaboration between Elmashhady and his publishing team was Nothing to Fear: Seven Simple Steps to Transcend Anxiety which was released worldwide over the summer. "In fact," Alexander recalled, "Hady was in Egypt visiting family when the book really started rolling. When he came home

he was amazed to see that it was with Barnes & Noble, Borders, and about thirty or forty booksellers around the world from Russia to India, and as far away as Australia and New Zealand." An internet search on the title brought up dozens of hits, which to the young author means more to him than the possibility of future royalty checks. "To me it means that people are getting some help finding relief from what is a very unforgiving disorder," Elmashhady said.

Anxiety and Depression As a youngster and during his subsequent teen years, Hady Elmashhady—who was born in Bahrain but moved with his family to the United States when he was three— suffered from Anxiety Disorder, something that affects millions of people worldwide. This acute anxiety consumed his entire quality

of life, but true to form Elmashhady faced it head on and in his book he documents what he did to overcome the fear, panic, and sometimes hopeless despair that overshadowed his life. From his own experiences he designed what he calls his seven steps to regain life "on your own terms." "We all have certain beliefs that specific things in the world are scary," Elmashhady explained. "Certain things must be intimidating or frightening to us, and this happens because we were raised with those beliefs or developed them through our experiences. There is a belief behind every fear that you have." He wondered, while in the throes of an anxiety attack, why a particular fear bothered him in the first place. "I decided that whenever I came across a fear, I would start breaking it down," El-

mashhady said. "And once I did that, I was on the road to transcending anxiety forever." Readers can find Hady Elmashhady's book, Nothing to Fear: Seven Simple Steps to Transcend Anxiety at www.amazon.com. l

Amtrak's Missouri River Runner Is a New Take on an American Tradition By Lee McCain The little guy wears the traditional engineers' cap and can barely contain himself as the thundering locomotive leading the silver carriages pulls into the Independence, Missouri Amtrak station. Bells chime from beneath the engine as the Missouri River Runner glides to a stop, bound for Saint Louis. Eight year old Asper Hobart, a lifelong Independence resident, knows his trains. After all, they have lulled him to sleep each night as they pass near his family's home, and it helps that his grandfather, Myron—who worked forty years for the Missouri Pacific and then the Union Pacific railroads¬—has plied him with toy trains, train lore, and trips like the one they are embarking on today since he was born. "Yep, he's my train buddy," Myron Hobart, 82, smiles. "Conductor!" Asper corrects. "I'm the conductor!" Then the elder Hobart jokes, "So why are you dressed like the engineer?" Asper quickly loses interest as he is overcome by the size and majesty of the train which is bedecked in red white and blue chevron striping along the smooth sides of the passenger coaches. It's just another day aboard Amtrak's Missouri River Runner, a twice daily service running between Kansas City and Saint Louis with stops in Independence, Lees Summit, Warrensburg,

Sedalia, Jefferson City, Hermann, Washington, and Kirkwood before pulling into its terminus at the Gateway Station in downtown Saint Louis. "I take the train home every weekend just about," says Micah Kohl, a 20-yearold literary studies major from Jefferson City. "My girlfriend lives at home still, and since I'm in Saint Louis going to school it's cool that I can get home every weekend and hang out with her." Kohl says he looks forward to the weekly train trips. His parents subsidize the train fare and are happy to keep him off the road, especially in the wintertime. "Hey, you can't beat it," Kohl chuckles. "I get to see my girlfriend, get a weekend's worth of home cooking, and it's cheaper than paying for

gas." He also mentions that his backpack was full of dirty laundry when he left Saint Louis on Friday, and that it magically appeared laundered and folded on the end of his bed by Sunday afternoon. "Aren't moms a great thing?" he laughs.

River Runner History In the years before Amtrak the Missouri Pacific offered the train service between Saint Louis "and all points west!" and the great named trains of the day, like The Missourian and The Scenic Limited carried their passengers with the kind of care that was expected. But in the later years, sometime in the mid1960's, there was such a decline in service that the public found other (Continued on STL PG 6)

In the mid 1980's Amtrak began a serious upgrade of the equipment used on the route with the purchase of reliable locomotives and beautifully appointed passenger cars. They also added a café car and a business class service that often sells out. The Horizon-class chair cars are comfortable and feature reclining seats, legroom to swim in, and the café car sells snacks, sandwiches, and world famous 'railroad-style' coffee. The journey from Saint Louis Gateway Station to Kansas City Union Station takes a little over five hours, and with two trains daily in each direction one can plan for daytime or evening arrivals on either end of the line. The trains also connect with the long

conductor knows her passenger—she punches his ticket every week while school is in session—and teases him about his snoring. The boy drowsily gathers his things and heads for the door. He's away, heading for the pedestrian bridge, with a backpack full of clean socks. Next weekend he'll do it all again, and Amtrak will be there to take him home. distance trains to California, Texas, as well as points east. Now the train has become a part of everyday central Missouri life. The people are riding the trains, and towns all along the line have felt a part of its rebirth since Amtrak and the Missouri Department of Transportation held a "Name the Train" contest in 2009. The winning name of Missouri River Runner was submitted by Keith Kohler of Glendale. As this day's Missouri River Runner clickety-clacks into the Gateway Station, the passengers rustle around in the luggage bins and head for the vestibule doors. The first one off the train is an excited little boy, grandfather in hand, heading in the direction of the locomotive. As boys his age have done for over a century, I expect he's just got to have another close up inspection of the engine before they head off on their day together. The last one off is the college kid who by trip's end had fallen asleep and had to be awakened by the conductor. "Last stop, Micah!" The

By Lee McCain As far as Americans are concerned, food is first. In no other country in the world has food been equated with tradition like in the good ol' U.S. of A.—from Omaha Steaks, to those ubiquitous hickory smoked holiday gift packs purchased at malls from sea to shining sea. Heck, even burger joints like Five Guys Burgers and In and Out Burgers on the west coast inspire lines around the block for a taste of gooey, beefy goodness. But if high quality, incredible taste, and memories of family, hearth, and home are what you're after, there's only one place in the world to

find all of it under one roof and it's been right here in our own backyard since 1952. Burgers' Smokehouse has been pleasing Ozark palates for over half a century, and has spread the good cheer and stuffed bellies the world over from their extensive Web site at www.smokehouse.com and continue to make the holidays (and the not so holidays) special with the wonderful foods they create at the Smokehouse. Everything from chops, roasts, lamb, veal, game birds, and of course the world famous smoked hams are waiting for the customers (Continued on CM PG 3)

marks from satisfied customers that are almost fanatical in nature, and nearly every country that has a post office is represented. Said one happy Smokehouse eater who is partial to the Missouri BBQ: "I love good barbecue, and there's nowhere in the country that makes it like Burgers'…and I'm from Texas where we're supposed to be the kings of BBQ!" Another longtime customer is proud of the fact that she can send her son, who is serving in Iraq, a taste of home while he is stationed in that very inhospitable part of the world. Burgers' has a wide selection of military packages ready to go, and in the spirit of giving that is so a part of the Burgers family tradition, the Smokehouse waives the shipping costs to the families and friends who are sending these tastes of home to their loved ones in uniform.

CENTRAL MISSOURI 4 A Little Smokehouse History It began with six hams sold to some city folk back in 1927. When E.M. Burger was a young man his mother, Hulda—who was from Germany and knew all about curing—taught him the age-old art of meat curing so necessary to country life before electricity was introduced to rural America. As a youngster, Mr. Burger learned the basic recipe and principals involved in preserving meats to prevent spoiling. After his marriage to Natalia Bueker, the founder continued to cure meats for personal use. During the 1940's additional hams were processed and sold to provide extra money for his family that now included three children. By 1956 Mr. Burger was producing around 5,000 hams annually and on July 23, 1956, the company be-

came the first country cured meat company in the United States to receive federal inspection. The business was incorporated under the name Burgers' Ozark Country Cured Hams, Inc. in 1957. Mr. Burger's business had proven successful. The family-owned corporation now comprises more than 305,545 square feet and is still located on the original site. Interestingly enough, that first little 1952 building remains a part of the existing plant complex. At the present time, the company produces 750,000 hams, bacon, sausage and a dozen other specialty meats.

Get Your Holiday Dinners Here! So whether you are looking for the perfect holiday feast, or are perhaps organizing an office party or a church celebration, a visit to Burgers' Smokehouse

will ensure that all that you envision for your holiday or year round entertaining will come true. And no matter where you live—from the Ozarks to Oslo—by calling Burgers' toll-free line at 1-800-3455185 or visiting their Web site at www.smokehouse.com, you'll not only enjoy some of the best meals you'll ever eat; but, you will remove the pressure that comes from entertaining holiday guests. But the proof, as they say, is in the pudding. In this case it comes from a recent customer who wrote: "I just received my smokehouse ham and had it for dinner. It was pure heaven. I would not order from anybody else. My family has been ordering from you for over 40 years." Imagine that; a customer for over forty years. That says more than this article ever could. 5 CENTRAL MISSOURI What Makes a

Successful Auto Dealer? By Lee McCain What if you were told that there is a place where you can purchase a new or pre-owned vehicle without the usual, stereotypical car dealership theatrics; the kind of negative experiences that have become ingrained in our car buying experiences over the years? And what if you were given the customer service courtesies that have long become a thing of the past? Finally, what would you say if you were shown a dealership that actually believes that if a customer is truly taken care of in every way—from sales to service—that success for the dealership is a given? Too good to be true? Not in the case of University ChryslerDodge-Jeep in Columbia. Ever since Dave Drane and Danny Burks assumed ownership of the impressive lot (one of many locally owned by the University crew) located at 1310 Vandiver Drive, the sales have risen steadily right along with local consumer satisfaction. Of course, it all starts with a good product. Chrysler has continually improved its product line to the point that they consistently receive some of the highest owner approval ratings in the industry,

something that would make Walter Chrysler— who founded the Auburn Hills, Mich. carmaker back in 1925—very proud were he here to see all that his company has accomplished over the decades.

Customers are Everything But as good as the car may be, it's all about how the customer is treated at the dealership level that ultimately determines the success of a brand. And at University Chrysler customer loyalty is rewarded by attentive service, the ability to deal based on the buying power University has, and by the excellent specials offered at the University service department. For instance, right now University Chrysler-DodgeJeep is offering an incredible deal for oil changes. How about this: buy one full service oil change for $39.99 and get three more free. It's an unheard of deal, but one that University is offering as a thanks to all the wonderful customers they've been honored to serve over the years. Customers just like you. So if you're in the market for the highest quality new or pre-owned vehicle you'll find locally, stop by University Chrysler at

Stimulus Package Publisher Extends Deals and Advertising Opportunities to St. Louis By Lee McCain In this world there are those who sit around complaining about the woes of the economy, how the government "done us wrong," and lament about the good ole days (whenever those were). And then there are those who decide to take a look at the problem and do something about it. Randy Dinwiddie, a rural Olean resident, took his sales skills and his entrepreneurial passions and decided to combine them in a way that would help his community weather many of the economic storms that have consumed the country of late. His goal was to stimulate and create sales for local businesses that would in turn promote job security and help maintain the tax base. You now hold the result of his local stimulus package in your hand, a publication filled with local content as well as coupons and

promotions for deals that are not found anywhere else in the area. "We promote American business, which to me is every local business in our area," Dinwiddie said in a recent interview. "We want to see people employed and have money to spend at our local merchants," he added. To Dinwiddie, everything economic is interconnected and he is proud that his newspapers—The Dealmaker and his newest paper, Dealmaker in the Lou—are a pivotal point in the process. He says that for a local economy to be strong, the residents have to support the merchants near their homes. "And it's not just about the smaller mom and pop stores," he said. "It's about supporting all of the stores and service providers in your area; car dealerships, supermarkets; even the larger national chain stores employ your neighbors. When people have jobs, they have the money to

spend. And they'll spend it," he said. Dinwiddie's publications provide the cornerstone for area merchants to get the word out. His monthly newspapers are filled with advertisements that provide discounts from restaurants, to automotive services, local entertainment, and household and rural living supplies. If it's bought and sold in central Missouri, likely you'll find it (at an appreciable discount) in one or both of Dinwiddie's papers. And now the deals and discounts that have become a central Missouri standard for his readers are now available in St. Louis with Dealmaker In the Lou.

CENTRAL MISSOURI 10 in each paper every month. But beginning with the January 2011 issues, a whole new discount program is being launched and—like the newspapers—it's free to the reader and consumer. "We'll always have the deals in the papers," Dinwiddie said, "but in January we'll have special, bigger deals available on our Web site at www.addmydeal.com." According to Dinwiddie, readers who see an ad in the paper are encouraged to go to the Web site and print out a coupon that offers an even greater discount than the ones already offered in the paper. "It's exciting to find a better deal, and it's great for our advertisers because they really get to see how excited their customers are about what they have to offer," he enthused.

The True Value This reporter took a few moments and actually added up the monetary value of all of the deals and offers available in Dealmaker, and Dealmaker In the Lou and they totaled over $5,230.00—a fact that will be published on the front page of each paper each month. So

from now on readers will be able to see just how many savings are available reflected in real dollars within Dinwiddie's publications. Not only are in the papers an ally for the readers, "but I'd like to think that I'm a fierce ally for Missouri businesses," Dinwiddie declared. And while the papers are sailing along, many times selling out of display ad space, it wasn't always so easy. Randy Dinwiddie began his publishing career in 2006 when he recognized the first distinct signs of serious economic trouble approaching. He wanted to help the merchants in the Bagnell Dam area have a low cost alternative to getting the word out about their businesses. He started with one customer and today he publishes two full color papers that average 24 pages, something unheard of in today's print newspaper world. "It's certainly been a labor of love," he said. "Not just for me personally, but getting to see the progress and hearing from my advertisers how much we've been able to do for them." Dinwiddie is also quick to point out that many struggling businesses that don't un-

derstand why they are staying economically stagnant are also the ones that fail to advertise. "You know, there's a reason that Coca-Cola, McDonald's, and other large successful companies continue to pay millions of dollars a year to advertise. You'd think that a McDonald's or Burger King would never have to advertise, but the fact is, any truly successful business knows that they have to defend their market share. And the only way to do that is to advertise," Dinwiddie explained. "And lucky for my advertisers, they don't have to spend millions to do it!" Dealmaker Merchant Network offers a number of advertising options, and it's a point of pride for Dinwiddie that he is able to design and offer an advertising campaign for just about any budget. "My sole goal is to bring customers to the door. And once the customers are in the door, the rest takes care of itself." Readers are invited to visit www.addmydeal.com and www.archcitydeals.com. Businesses wishing to advertise with either or both papers may contact Randy Dinwiddie at (314) 580-3455. l

The Miracle City of the Ozarks Linn Creek Has Lived Two Lives By H. Dwight Weaver “Mounting their residences on rollers and skids, wrecking and re-building other structures, moving stocks of merchandise and places of business, Linn Creek was transplanted . . . up the valley out of the reach of the rising waters,” said the Daily Capital News and Post Tribune newspaper in Jefferson City in 1931. “This was done virtually overnight. New values, new ideals, new visions were created, and thus the new Linn Creek has gained the appellation of “The Miracle City of the Ozarks.” the paper intoned. Less

CENTRAL MISSOURI12 than one mile northeast of Camdenton on U.S. Highway 54 is the town of Linn Creek, the community called “The Miracle City of the Ozarks” or “New Linn Creek” in the 1930s and 40s. The Linn Creek of today is not the original Linn Creek but a rebirth of Old Linn Creek that once sat one mile upstream in Linn Creek valley from the creek’s confluence with the Osage River. The town is three miles from that confluence and the waters of Lake of the Ozarks fill most of the valley’s lower three miles. The original site of Old Linn Creek is now beneath 40 feet of water.

Early Settlement Old Linn Creek was first settled about 1841 by Benjamin R. Abbott, who operated the first store. Before that, a man named Aaron Crain operated a ferry at the mouth of Linn Creek. A second confluence nearby was that of the Niangua River. Crain ferried passengers

across both the Niangua and the Osage rivers. By the early 1850s, Joseph W. McClurg settled at this location and briefly became governor of Missouri following the Civil War. He was Linn Creek and Camden County’s most distinguished citizen of the late nineteenth century. By the time Bagnell Dam was built and Lake of the Ozarks formed in 1931, Old Linn Creek had a population of approximately 500.

A Lake Is Formed It was decided that a lake would be formed to entice tourists to the area and the site of this lake encompassed the area where what would soon be known as Old Linn Creek was. The people of Old Linn Creek had the choice of selling their house and property to Union Electric, who built the dam and formed the Lake, or they could sell their land and have their house moved to a new location. Many of the people chose to sell out and build a new home

elsewhere or in the new town of Camdenton. But a few actually had their houses moved to Camdenton while others had their houses moved a couple of miles up Linn Creek valley to the location of New Linn Creek. There are today more than a dozen occupied houses in Linn Creek that were originally in Old Linn Creek.

Linn Creek Lore Linn Creek Cove, its shores not burdened by towering bluffs and precipitously sloping hillsides, was conducive to development and hosted several of the Lake’s earliest fishing camps and resorts such as Art Luck’s Fishing and Hunting Resort. Art’s place was located right up the hill above the former site of Old Linn Creek. His guests could boast of fishing in the waters over Old Linn Creek, thus it was that fanciful myths and legends were born, stories often believed by people unfamiliar with the history of the moving (Continued on CM PG 13)

(Continued from CM PG 12) of Old Linn Creek. It was said you could see the buildings of Old Linn Creek beneath the water and that when the Lake was low a church steeple jutted above the surface and the steeple’s bell could be heard ringing on dark, windy nights. The stories were completely untrue but added a lot of spark around the campfires that fishermen built at night. Among the first merchants in New Linn Creek were J. H. Bruin, J. W. Garrison, Lon King, O. H. Evers, Thomas Moulder, J. A. Bunch, J. R. Neal, R. F. Houser and E. C. Shifflett. J. A. Bruin, who opened the Bear Den Grocery, is said to have carried on his back, pieceby-piece, all the lumber used in the building of the grocery store

from a lumberyard in Old Linn Creek up to his New Linn Creek location. J. W. Garrison opened the Green Lantern Café while Lon King, merchant, farmer and realtor, operated a jewelry store and served as the town’s undertaker. O. H. Evers opened the Linn Creek Hotel, which was described as “a quaint little allstone structure” with a mantle over the dining room fireplace that was over a century old. It was made from walnut that was formerly in the Methodist parsonage in Old Linn Creek. Evers also built separate tourist cottages. The old hotel building still stands and is now a private residence. The Moulder family operated a drug store and general dry goods firm; J. A. Bunch op-

erated the Camden Motor Company, which sold Ford products; J. R. Neal operated a lumberyard; R. F. Houser had the Lakeside Barber Shop; and E. F. Shifflett had Fat’s Bar-B-Q. The First National Bank of New Linn Creek had a capital surplus of $50,000 and deposits of $450,000. The bank was organized in Old Linn Creek in 1905 and John M. Farmer was cashier when New Linn Creek was established. These merchants and their businesses are long gone but some of their buildings survive. Houses in Linn Creek’s older residential areas are showing their age, but southeast of U. S. Highway 54 along the banks of the North Fork of Linn Creek the commercial landscape has a newer look in the town’s industrial area. l

is a Treasure By Lee McCain Brandon Mroz recently took the silver medal in the Men's Figure Skating in China. Of course it's a gratifying and exciting accomplishment, but for Brandon, he can rest assured that the medal he earned is in fact forged of the highest quality silver. This is because he and his father come from a long line of Saint Louis jewelers who own one of the most famous and revered jewelry stores in America. Kessler Mroz Jewelry has been in business for over a century, and by all accounts they have earned those bragging rights because of their attentive customer service, a jewelry line that is unlike any other in the nation, and their ability to hand make any piece a customer can imagine. "We make jewelry for everyone, from sports stars, to film stars, to rappers, and of course the average person who wants the best in jewelry but who might be on a budget," says owner Michael Mroz. "We can give our clients the very best service because they deal directly with us; there's no middle man, like the corporate jewelry stores have," he adds. "We make and cast jewelry in house, and we don't have to charge for every little thing in the process because we do it all here." This, according to Mroz, is why his firm can eliminate

"We can give our clients the very best service because they deal directly with us; there's no middle man, like the corporate jewelry stores have." –Michael Mroz, owner so much of the overhead that would normally be passed on to the customer. "Plus," he adds, "we love what we do. We really care that the client gets what he or she is looking for." He illustrates this with a story of a desperate client who was searching for a matching ring for a wedding band that the chain stores said was discontinued. "He showed it to me and we were able to duplicate it exactly to the specifications of the original piece," Mroz explained. "Needless to say, that was one happy customer." And Mroz, while he would discount it as just an average day of making a client happy, admitted that one of his greatest thrills in the business is being able to provide services like this that, for the most part, ended with the Johnson administration.

Living History Mroz is also happy to keep the history of his

store as true as the day it opened in 1904. The Mroz family entered the business when Ed Mroz worked with Al Kessler, the original store owner. Ed's brother, Joseph— who is Michael's father— was trained as an apprentice under Al's expert tutelage. After a timeout doing his country's bidding in WWII, Joseph returned to the Kessler business and eventually became a partner in 1946. This is when the Mroz lineage assumed full-time operation of the store and the many members of the Mroz family made their careers providing the best service and jewelry pieces available anywhere. And at a time when the entire jewelry and precious metals retail industry was changing, the Mroz family decided the best course of action was to maintain their fine standards and ignore what the competition did. That decision has served them well. Michael Mroz's career
