VIAGGIO NELL’ARTE TOTALE di Michele Weiss Per capire l’eccezionale importanza delle avanguardie artistiche novecentesche Parigi resta la meta fondamentale. Al Centre Pompidou, fino al 21 marzo 2011, è in atto una grande mostra dedicata a Piet Mondrian e al movimento astratto ‘De Stijl’. Occasione da non perdere poiché era dal 1969 che nella capitale francese non allestivano una rassegna così importante sull’opera del celebre pittore olandese che, nella Ville des Lumièrs della prima metà del Novecento ha speso la parte migliore della propria attività d’artista, interfacciandosi con gli altri movimenti (cubismo-dadaismo su tutti) e gli artisti e i creativi in tutti i settori, tra cui Jean Arp, Le Corbusier, il fotografo André Kertesz e tanti altri ancora. La prima parte dell’esposizione, attraverso un centinaio di quadri segue l’evoluzione stilistica di Mondrian, dal confronto iniziale con il cubismo di Picasso e Braque fino agli sviluppi del Neoplasticismo, alla ricerca ‘dell’arte totale’, una visione in cui la realtà naturale viene via via abbandonata verso un’astrazione radicale senza compromessi. Seguendo una prassi ormai consolidata nelle ultime rassegne parigine sui grandi Maestri del Novecento, una sala è dedicata alla ricostruzione fedele del celebre atelier parigino di Mondrian in rue du Départ 26 a Montparnasse, luogo cardine della vita bohèmienne cittadina. La seconda parte della mostra, invece, cerca di far luce sui rapporti tra Mondrian e il movimento astrattista De Stijl, da lui fondato insieme al connazionale Theo Van Doesburg: avanguardia interessata alla relazione della forma artistica con le scoperte scientifiche dell’epoca, creata in Olanda e trapiantata a Parigi tra le due Guerre.
A JOURNEY INTO TOTAL ART An important exhibition dedicated to Mondrian and the abstract De Stijl movement in Paris represents the work of one of the most vital painters and avant-garde movements of the twentieth century. To understand the exceptional importance of the twentieth-century artistic avant-gardes, Paris remains a fundamental destination. The Centre Pompidou, through March 21 2011, is holding an important exhibition dedicated to Piet Mondrian and the “De Stijl” abstract movement. This is an opportunity not to be missed, since 1969 was the last time the French capital put together such a significant survey of the works of this celebrated Dutch painter, who spent most of his artistic life in the City of Lights during the first half of the twentieth century, coming into contact with other movements (Cubism and Dadaism primarily), artists and creative talents in all fields, including Jean Arp, Le Corbusier, photographer André Kertesz and many others. The first part of the
exposition, which displays one hundred paintings to explain Mondrian’s stylistic evolution, from his initial approach to Picasso and Braque’s Cubism to the development of Neo-Plasticism, in search of “total art”, a vision that progressively abandoned natural reality to achieve a radical and uncompromising abstraction. Following a practice that has become consolidated in recent exhibitions on the great Masters of the twentieth century, a room is dedicated to the faithful reconstruction of Mondrian’s famous atelier in Paris in Rue du Départ 26, Montparnasse, a key site of the city’s Bohemian life. The second part of the exhibition, on the other hand, seeks to illustrate the relationships between Mondrian and the abstract De Stijl movement, which he founded in collaboration with his compatriot Theo Van Doesburg: this was an avant-garde movement interested in the relationship between artistic form and the scientific discoveries of the time, founded in Holland and transplanted to Paris between the two World Wars.
