CHICKAMAUGA

TJB 954G X REBEL YELL

Chickamauga represents the most powerful genetic combination in TJB Gelbvieh’s 37-year history — sired by Rebel Yell and out of the legendary 954G, the most flawless female we’ve ever produced. This is a mating we’ve long anticipated, and a bull we’ve waited years to name. Chickamauga is that bull.

A seventh-generation Anissa, Chickamauga is stacked with consistent, elite donor females — a linebred pedigree built for greatness. He blends performance, phenotype, and proven cow power. His EPDs are impressive, but they’re just the bonus. The real value is what you can see — balance, depth, structure, and presence. He checks every box.

They say great sires come from great females. This is your first chance to own a son of 954G.

AFROM THE CORNER OFFICE GRAND OLE GELBVIEH

grand time was had by all in Lebanon, Tenn., June 22-27, 2025, at the Grand Ole Gelbvieh Junior Classic. Over 300 cattle and 154 junior exhibitors from 18 states and Canada participated in a variety of contests, shows and events that highlighted American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) member’s varied and exceptional talents. It was a pleasure to be a part of, and I encourage everyone to take time to attend an AGJA Junior Classic. It is impossible to leave this event without being infused with optimism about Gelbvieh cattle and the future of the cattle industry!

An event like the Grand Ole Gelbvieh Junior Classic does not happen without an army of volunteers, parents, sponsors, AGJA members and staff working tirelessly to present a high caliber learning experience for all participants. I would especially like to thank the Butler family; Michael, Barbi, Zack and Autumn, for their leadership and labor to make the Classic a huge success. Another big thank you to American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Member and Junior Activities

Coordinator, Martha Moenning for her efforts. Joining the AGA team in late March, she spent a whirlwind two months to help create this fantastic event.

The AGJA is a tremendous asset to the AGA. By creating events, activities and a positive culture, AGJA members can gain the skills and network necessary to become the new generation of leaders in the beef industry. Past members of the AGJA are across the country serving as leaders in the beef business, an accomplishment all AGA members should be proud of. This year’s banquet recognized those that completed their tenure as junior members and now transition into senior membership. I look forward to these graduates putting the skills and experiences gained as AGJA members to work moving the Gelbvieh breed forward. A special thank you to the AGJA board members that retired after serving their terms: Jaycie Forbes, Lily Judd, Sadie Morris and Jaylea Pope. Thank you for your outstanding leadership on the AGJA Board.

My last thank you goes to the parents that encourage their children to attend (and

pay most of the bills) the Junior Classic. I am aware of the financial and time commitment it takes to attend a weeklong event like this. I enjoyed visiting with you at the event and sharing in your children’s successes throughout the week. In our family, junior nationals were a great opportunity to bond and enjoy time spent together. It also served as our family vacation for about 15 years! Thank you for making it possible for your children to grow up in the Gelbvieh family.

As we turn the page from a tremendous event celebrating our junior members, their cattle and accomplishments, I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to our 55th AGA Convention held December 3-5, 2025. This year’s convention will be held at the Margaritaville Hotel in Nashville, Tenn. An exciting array of committee meetings, educational opportunities and association business on items that shape the future of the breed await those who attend.

Your voice is important in shaping the future of AGA and the Gelbvieh breed, and the convention is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and ideas. It is also a chance to reconnect with friends and create new connections. We will recognize members for outstanding service and accomplishments all while having a great time in exciting Nashville, Tenn. Make plans to attend and look for more information in future AGA communications.

Again, congratulations to all the participants of the AGJA Grand Ole Junior Gelbvieh Classic! It was a week full of activities that will have a lifetime of benefits. I look forward to seeing you down the road.F

EVIEW FROM THE BOARD

THE FUTURE OF GELBVIEH IS BRIGHT

ach year the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) comes together for a busy week of fellowship and competitions that extend well beyond the cattle and this year did not disappoint. I first want to thank the membership from Tennessee and the Southeast for their efforts in hosting this year. There was no shortage of southern hospitality.

The junior board of directors and their new staff advisor, Martha, deserve the highest praise for the way the event was conducted. The amount of organization and the level of preparedness was impressive to witness from the sidelines. Well done team!

I believe it is important to take stock as a membership of how important this

program is to our membership. If there would not have been an AGJA, I assure you that there would not be a Warner Beef Genetics today. The number of operations within our breed that would be similar are astounding, truly an example of pull through membership growth driven by our junior association. Additionally, the retention of talented individuals that have grown up in our association that now serve in various capacities is a credit to the commitment and the loyalty of our membership.

This year, as the week had come near to a close in Lebanon, I visited with a very passionate advocate of our junior program. It was reiterated to me that the ability for our youth to grow and bloom because of the AGJA needs recognition.

I couldn’t agree more. Each and every child betters themselves by just being involved in this program. They become better speakers, gain self-confidence, and learn life skills about networking with people. I reflect upon a statement, “We don’t have children to raise our cattle, but more importantly we have cattle to raise our kids.”

The Gelbvieh breed is in a great position within the industry and is poised to solidify a strong market share because of the many years of a strong junior program. Our future is bright because of the young people associated with great cattle. I look forward to the future and can’t wait to see everyone in Nebraska for the “Good Life” junior nationals next year.F

JTHE JUNIORS KEEP TURNING UP THE HEAT

unior members and their families traveled to Lebanon, Tenn., for the Grand Ole Gelbvieh Junior Classic. The weather was hot, the cattle were top notch, and the kids came to compete.

The week began Sunday evening with cattle and contest check-in. There were around 300 head of cattle checked in, 154 exhibitors and 18 states plus Canada were represented. We jumped right into contests on Monday and Tuesday mornings. Wednesday was the Sullivan Supply Inc. showmanship contest where seniors, intermediates, juniors, peewees and even adults competed. Thursday was the National Junior Balancer® Show, and Friday was the National Junior Gelbvieh Show. The cattle just keep getting better and better. It is exciting to see the junior members’ hard work come to the ring to compete.

Personally, I think that the AGJA program stands apart from other breeds because of

the kids that make up the program. The talent is deep within, and their hard work is recognized. But more importantly, the friendships that are formed through the junior program. No matter what happens or who wins, all success is celebrated and congratulated. Because at the end of the day, that is what moves the Gelbvieh and Balancer breeds forward in the industry.

We concluded the week with the banquet, where juniors were awarded for their hard work throughout the week. During the AGJA teal coat ceremony, our newly elected junior board members were recognized. The newly elected board members are Cody Brown, Corbin Lowe, Justine Pope, and Madalyn Johnson. Lincoln Martin was re-elected. In addition, our retiring board members gave their retiring addresses. Our retiring members are Jaycie Forbes, Lily Judd, Sadie Morris, and Jaylea Pope. We also recognized TJB Gelbvieh as the Honorary

Friend of the AGJA. After the conclusion of the banquet, members and families gave their final hugs and goodbyes until next year at the Good Life Junior Classic held June 21-26, 2026, in Grand Island, Neb.

I want to thank the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) staff who came to keep junior classic running smoothly, especially Martha Moenning, our new junior activities coordinator. In addition, I want to thank our summer intern and the show interns who came and devoted their time to benefit our juniors in a better Junior Classic experience. I also want to thank the parents and volunteers for helping with numerous contests and activities. A huge thank you to the Tennessee Gelbvieh Association and Tennessee Gelbvieh Junior Association for hosting and making this week happen. I can’t wait to see you next year in Grand Island!F

TJB Anissa 954G may be the most complete female we’ve ever raised—and visitors to the ranch often say she’s among the most perfect they’ve seen, of any breed. But true greatness is proven in production. A sixth-generation Anissa donor, 954G represents the kind we strive to build: elite phenotype, unmatched maternal strength, and consistent quality. We believe she’s destined to be the dam of herd sires who move the Gelbvieh breed forward. Her legacy is secure. The seventh generation is already here.

CREATIVE WRITING WINNERS

2025 AGJA GRAND

Each year, AGJA members are offered the opportunity to compete in a creative writing contest to showcase both their writing skills and passion for the beef industry. The winners of this contest are published in this issue to highlight both their writing skills and subject knowledge.

Seniors were given the following prompt: Our goal is to make Gelbvieh and Balancer® the breed of choice in the United States. Every producer has a reason for choosing their breed of choice. Explain why you choose Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle. Share the benefits of utilizing the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed. How can you use your “why” to help promote the breed to other cattle producers?

The Gelbvieh Advantage: A Smarter Strategy for Cattle Producers

Jessie Lowe, Adrian, Mo

In a business with tight margins where every calf counts, cattle producers constantly search for smarter strategies to improve efficiency, fertility, and profitability. Yet many overlook a breed that delivers all three: Gelbvieh. Known for their maternal excellence, rapid growth performance, and marketable carcass traits, Gelbvieh cattle give beef producers an advantage in the pasture and on the rail. For producers looking to boost their bottom line without sacrificing calving ease or carcass quality, incorporating Gelbvieh is not just a smart move – it’s a tactical one that can yield profit for years to come.

Choosing Gelbvieh for my herd was an easy decision. After learning about their calving ease, high fertility, and strong milk production, I knew they were the smart choice for laying a solid foundation. These traits are critical because more live calves and higher weaning weights directly translate to increased returns. While the initial investment in Gelbvieh cattle may be slightly higher than that of other breeds, their long-term profitability is undeniable. Fewer calf losses, better growth rates, and lower replacement costs all contribute to a more efficient and productive cow-calf operation. Whether you are running a commercial or purebred herd, these qualities lead to lasting success. Scientific data and breed performance records offer clear evidence of the maternal strengths that define Gelbvieh females and their reliability.

The main reason why I choose Gelbvieh is simple: I want cattle that make me money without making my job harder. Gelbvieh cattle are known for their exceptional longevity and overall herd health

Intermediates were challenged to take us through their show season process with a Gelbvieh/Balancer heifer. How do they select their heifer? Who is their ideal fitting team? How did they select the team? What does show day prep look like?

Juniors were asked to imagine their friend wants to start showing beef cattle but aren’t sure what breed they want to show and share why they believe they should choose to show Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle

compared to many other beef breeds. Studies and breed performance data from the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) show that Gelbvieh females often remain productive for 10 years or more, outlasting many Angus or Simmental cows, which tend to cycle out of production sooner. Their strong maternal instincts, structural soundness, and higher fertility contribute to fewer health issues, fewer replacements needed, and more calves per cow over a lifetime. This longevity and durability make Gelbvieh a cost-effective and sustainable choice for long-term herd success. In an industry where veterinary costs and replacement heifers can ruin profit margins, the low-maintenance and high-return nature of Gelbvieh cows provides producers with a smart strategy.

Furthermore, in a performance test conducted by the AGA, Gelbviehinfluenced calves weaned at weights between 550-650 pounds at 205 days, demonstrating a clear advantage over claves from other breeds of similar frame size. This kind of growth performance is exactly what producers need to remain competitive. Gelbvieh calves grow rapidly and convert feed into weight gain efficiently—an increasingly important trait in today’s economic climate, where feed costs are rising.

According to a recent article published by the AGA, feeder cattle auctions show growing demand from feeders for Gelbvieh-influenced SmartCross® genetics. SmartCross is a crossbreeding approach that leverages the strength of Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle to improve performance, efficiency, and profitability in beef production. The article provided a case study from Cedar Top Ranch in Nebraska, which sold 800-pound steers for $147.50, topping the market. This is just one example—ranches across the country are experiencing similar success with Gelbvieh-influenced genetics, often reporting better feedlot performance and fewer days on feed compared to other crossbred steers.

OLE Gelbvieh CLASSIC

OLE Gelbvieh CLASSIC

Beyond their performance in the pasture and feedlot, Gelbvieh cattle also have an advantage on the rail. They produce lean, muscular carcasses with high dressing percentages and favorable yield grades, often outperforming industry averages. These carcass traits make them attractive to packers and usually bring premium prices. As stated in the same article published by the AGA, “Data from Colorado State University’s Maxwell Ranch SmartCross research

dollars in both a low and high Choice/Select spread over Angus-sired cattle.” Their genetics also enhance muscle and growth when used in crossbreeding programs, making them an excellent complement to breeds like Angus or Simmental. These benefits mean more value per carcass, better grid performance, and improved profit margins for

Another notable Gelbvieh advantage is their docile temperament and adaptability. Gelbvieh cattle are known for being easy to handle,

improves daily operations and reduces injuries and handling time. In addition, they are highly adaptable to diverse climates, thriving in both hot southern regions and colder northern operations. Their hardiness and quiet nature make them well-suited for producers of all sizes and levels of experience. These qualities make them an ideal breed for young or beginning producers looking for a dependable,

While more recognizable breeds like Angus may seem like the safer bet due to consumer brand recognition, they do not consistently deliver the same maternal performance or level of feed efficiency as Gelbvieh. When Gelbvieh genetics are incorporated into crossbreeding programs, the results often surpass purebred alternatives in weaning weights and long-term productivity. According to a Cattle Today article published in May of 2022, the Bar None Ranch in Marion, North Carolina, saw a noticeable increase in weaning weights after introducing Gelbvieh genetics into their program. This improvement translated into higher sale weights and a better return on the investment in a market where every pound and pregnancy counts—and performance should matter more than a breed name.

In conclusion, Gelbvieh cattle are a powerful asset to any cattle operation. Their maternal excellence, rapid growth performance, and marketable carcass traits give producers the tools they need to success in a competitive industry. Their longevity, docility, and adaptability only add to their value. Whether you are building a herd from the ground up or looking to improve an existing one, Gelbvieh offers a reliable, profitable path forward. For producers serious about maximizing their returns without compromising quality, Gelbvieh is not just a good option—it is the smart strategy.

Building a Champion: Behind the Scenes

Showing cattle is one of my favorite things to do. Every show season is a new and fun adventure, but it also takes a lot of hard work. I love showing Gelbvieh cattle, and I’m going to take you through my whole process from picking my show heifer, to show day prep and

The first step in my show season is choosing my heifer. During calving season each heifer born is a possible future show heifer. A good show heifer is deep sides, has a straight topline, a long feminine neck and is structurally sound. It is also important that she has a good personality because I’m going to be spending a lot of time with her! If she’s too wild or jumpy, it makes training and showing way harder. My ideal heifer is a well-balanced female who is easy to work with plus, she must have that “wow” factor when she walks into the ring!

This year, I picked Reba. She is a beautiful dark red Gelbvieh heifer. After Reba was weaned, I brought her up from the pasture to the barn and started halter-breaking her. At first, she was a little stubborn, but I stayed patient. I work with her every day, which builds our trust with each other. I rinse and brush her daily, and practice show ring etiquette to prepare for the upcoming show season. We’ve become quite a team.

Showing cattle is not a one-person job. I have an amazing fitting team that helps me get my heifer ready for the show. My team includes my aunt, who is super good at clipping; my grandpa, who helps with feeding, organizing show supplies, and packing the trailer; and my mom also has a big role in making sure my heifer stays clean while at the shows. She always has paper towels and baby wipes ready!

If I could build my dream fitting team, I would add one of the professional fitters from T Bar S Cattle because they are awesome at making cattle look their best. They could also teach me how to improve my fitting skills. I would also have my good friend Aubree on my team. She is my age and just started showing cows and learning to fit. It is more fun when you’re with someone who is learning just like you. The best fitting teams help each other out and work had together.

It is not just about winning, it is about doing your best and having fun along the way.

Show day starts early. Like, really early. We usually get up before the sun to feed the heifers and make sure everything is packed. We check the showbox for brushes, combs, halters, and show sticks. I always double-check my show clothes to make sure I have clean jeans, a nice button-up shirt, belt, and boots.

When we get to the show, we unload and set up our stall. My heifers gets her water, hay, and a little time to rest. Then it’s time to get to work. First, we give her a bath to get all the dirt and dust off. Then, we blow her dry and start brushing her hair forward to make her look full and fluffy.

Next comes clipping and fitting. My aunt usually clips her topline while I work on combing and fixing her tail head. My favorite part of fitting is balling and teasing the tail. We use special sprays to add volume and shine to her hair. I try to stay calm and focused, but I always get a little nervous and excited. I talk to my heifer while we work, and I think she knows it’s almost time to shine.

JUNIOR DIVISION CHAMPION

Give Me the Halter

Lawton Geppert, Highmore, S.D.

Once upon a time there was a young boy named Carter. His best friend Lawton, also known as Zippy, lived on a farm. His family raised and showed cattle. Zippy was always telling Carter all about his show heifers and the fun he had doing it.

Carter always wished he could show a calf, but he lived in town. One day he told Zippy that he was sad because he couldn’t show a calf. Zippy said, “You don’t have to live on a farm to show a calf!” Carter smiled when he shouted, “You don’t!” And that led to Carter’s big question. What kind of a heifer should I show?

“Well, there’s all kinds of breeds to show. I have shown Balancers and Simmentals, but my favorite are the Gelbvieh and Balancers,” Zippy said. “How come?” asked Carter. “Well that a long story!” Zippy replied.

Then Zippy explained it’s like playing basketball – some kids are good at playing defense, others are good at shooting, and some are good at both. Some breeds are good at one thing and others are good at other things. Gelbvieh and Balancers are good at many things. First of all, you want a show calf that is friendly – you don’t want one that tries to eat your Cheerios if you know what I mean. Second, you should always pick a heifer calf that will make a good momma cow and Gelbvieh and Balancers are good at that. They take good care of their calves and have plenty of milk to feed them. If you breed them right, you will get calves that have lots of growth. That means you will have calves that weigh more when you wean them and sell them. All these things are very

When it’s time to go into the ring, I make sure my heifer is clean, her halter is on just right, and I have my lucky show stick ready to set her up perfectly. I take a deep breath and walk in the ring with confidence. I try to keep my eyes on the judge while also making sure my heifer is set up correctly. I scratch her belly to keep her calm and alert. I also will give her a soft blow of air to the nose to help bring her ears forward. Even though I get butterflies in my stomach, I remind myself that we’ve practiced for this. Whether we win a banner or not, I feel proud knowing we did our best.

At the end of the show, we load up, and head home. I’m usually tired, dusty, and maybe a little sunburned, but I’m also happy. I’ve learned so much, met new friends, and grown closer to my heifer. Every show season teaches me more about responsibility, teamwork, and how to never give up. And showing a Gelbvieh heifer makes it even better.

I can’t wait for next season. I don’t know what heifer I’ll choose yet, but I do know one thing, it will be another great Gelbvieh female.

good to know but let me tell you why I really like showing Balancer and Gelbvieh heifers.

I have made a lot of good friends showing Balancer and Gelbvieh cattle. They live in all different parts of the United States, even from Canada. Johnny Pope is from Nebraska, Mallory Mahoney is from Alabama, Owen Spencer is from South Dakota. It’s a lot of fun to see them each year during the Classic. Zippy also said that he even gets to be on teams with them.

“So, Carter what do you think about showing a Gelbvieh or Balancer heifer with me?” Zippy asked. I think that would be pretty cool! Let’s do it!”, Carter said. “I know right now that you will think it is the most fun thing to do in the summer. You are going to new states that you have never been to and will meet a lot of cool people. You will get to learn new things about cattle. But most of all, it’s all about having fun!” Lawton replied. With a big smile on his face, Carter said, “GIVE ME THE HALTER!”

AGJA GRAND GRAVELY

WINS TONY HAYEK MEMORIAL AWARD

Each year the Tony Hayek Memorial Award is presented at the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) Junior Classic to the exhibitor of the Champion Bred and Owned Gelbvieh Heifer. This year’s recipient at the 2025 Grand Ole Gelbvieh Junior Classic held in Lebanon, Tennessee, was Sam Gravely of Mount Juliet, Tenn.

The Tony Hayek Memorial was established 20 years ago. Tony loved cattle, kids and having a good time. Junior Nationals was his family vacation nearly every year. Tony’s children Tina, Stan, Shellina and Janelle were all active in the AGJA. Three of the four have chosen to continue with their own herd (Cib’s Gelbvieh, Herink Gelbvieh and Taubenheim Gelbvieh). Tony’s influence in the breed lives on through his kids and grandkids as they participate in many shows and other Gelbvieh activities.

“My grandpa, Tony Hayek, was passionate about the Gelbvieh breed and the junior Gelbvieh programs. We thank the AGJA

for continuing his memory with the Tony Hayek Memorial Award which is presented to the Champion Bred and Owned Gelbvieh Heifer each year,” said Brayton Cibula.

Tony was passionate about Gelbvieh cattle and knew the breed’s future was in the hands of the younger generations. He found great joy in teaching the youth about the Gelbvieh breed and helping them with their livestock projects. He loved watching his kids exhibit cattle, but he always wanted them to understand the skills that are needed outside of the show ring to breed quality cattle. Showing cattle takes a great deal of skill but competing in the bred and owned division takes that skill to a much higher level. It is for that reason the Bred and Owned show was always one of his favorites.

Congratulations to Sam Gravely on achieving the Champion Bred and Owned Gelbvieh Heifer honor. Tony would be very proud of your dedication to breeding outstanding Gelbvieh genetics.F

KETCHERSIDE CHOSEN AS 2025-2026 AGJA AMBASSADOR

Thank you to Sarah Carroll of Raymore, Mo., for her outstanding service as the 2024-2025 American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) Ambassador. Over the past year, Sarah has represented the AGJA with integrity, passion, and commitment. She has worked to promote the Gelbvieh breed, support junior members, and completed a meaningful service project to Whetstone Boys Ranch. We are grateful for her dedication and leadership throughout her term. Now, we proudly welcome Hadlee Ketcherside of Cuba, Mo., as the 2025-2026 AGJA Ambassador.

Hadlee is a longtime AGJA member and a familiar face in and out of the showring. She brings with her a strong background and dedication to the Gelbvieh breed. She is active in her state association, school, and community, and has continually demonstrated a drive to lead and serve.

This year, the AGJA Ambassador application process included being nominated from the floor at opening ceremonies,

completing an interview, and giving a speech at the AGJA Annual Meeting. A panel of judges evaluated all components, and Hadlee rose to the top as this year’s selection.

The AGJA Ambassador Program is designed to recognize and empower youth leaders who exemplify a passion for the Gelbvieh breed and a commitment to its future. As Ambassador, Hadlee will represent the AGJA at events throughout the year – from local and regional shows to national gatherings.

We look forward to Hadlee’s year of service and leadership. Congratulations, Hadlee, on being selected as the 2025-2026 AGJA Ambassador!F

HONORARY FRIEND OF THE AGJA

Each year the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) awards an Honorary Friend of the AGJA. The recipients of this award are families and individuals who go above and beyond to help the youth of our organization. This year’s recipient is TJB Gelbvieh operated by Todd and Alisa Bickett. The Bicketts of Chickamauga, Ga., were recognized as the Honorary Friend of the AGJA at the 2025 Grand Ole Gelbvieh Junior Classic awards banquet, which was held on Friday, June 26, 2025, in Lebanon, Tenn.

The Bicketts have been a staple in the junior program along with the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) as a whole. Todd has served multiple terms on the AGA board of directors. He was one of the pioneers of the Gelbvieh breed who recognized the Balancer® breed to lead the industry in composite cattle registry. Although, their two daughters, Kelsey and Katelyn, have aged out of the junior program, they are still active with various roles in the TJB program.

“Every time the junior board reaches out to Todd and Alisa, without hesitation, they consistently offer their time, provide a meal, or monetary support for the junior program. They are a true example of selfless support and genuine love for this breed and the youth involved within. Congratulations to Todd and Alisa Bickett of TJB Gelbvieh as the 2025 Honorary Friend of the AGJA,” said Gentry Warner, 2025-2025 AGJA President.F
