TVIEW FROM THE BOARD
QUITE A RIDE
by Dan Warner, AGA President
he past 11 months have been the fastest 300 days of my life so far. It has been dry, wet, and cold, then hot, seemingly everywhere this year, but the biggest comfort has been the cattle market. Except for a few tweets and a few weeks, it has been quite a ride.
The staff and the business of the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) have been no different. The board of directors has focused on unification of the membership and standing on the gas, if you will, in this fast-paced business. Harold has built a full team, and the buzz coming from Lincoln, Nebraska, is the AGA office, not our football team. I can honestly say that when we asked the team how many cows we could add this
year, I thought we set them up to fail. Who can maintain cows, let alone add cows, in a year of record cull prices and the smallest national cow herd inventory in decades? The talent of the staff and the passion of our membership proved me wrong. Regardless of what the actual count says, the efforts put forth are worth recognition. Well done, Gelbvieh!
The committee’s engagement and the board of directors’ efforts have made some bold moves this year. Gelbvieh has a new set of economic selection indexes, and as challenging as that can be, our new indexes are as current to the industry profit drivers as we have ever had. The diligence of our membership to data and information has proven us to be the
highest percentage of genotyped cattle in our population of any breed in the IGS database. As I reflect on the past 11 months, we accomplished a lot and, even more importantly, this breed is prepared for the next year better than ever.
The upcoming year will be full of opportunities. The new data being released on maternal traits helps to solidify our efforts in “owning maternal”. The talent of our entire staff will broaden the reach of Gelbvieh without stretching us too thin. Most importantly, the efforts of our membership to promote and propagate genetics that can “do more with less” will be more recognized within the industry and add to your bottom line.F

IHAPPY FALL Y’ALL!
by Cody Brown, AGJA Director
n the fast-paced, physically demanding world of the livestock industry, where early mornings and long days are the norm, it’s easy to focus solely on the work at hand: feeding, breeding, doctoring, harvest and breaking the newly weaned calves for next year’s show string. Yet, in the quiet moments in the barns and tractors, I find myself pondering the deep sense of gratitude that appears out of nowhere. Gratitude for the people, friends, family and acquaintances, who make this life not only possible, but meaningful.
Whether it’s the neighbor who helped pull a calf at 2 a.m., the friend who lent a trailer without hesitation after blowing out a tire or breaking a weld, or the family who has been in the pens with you since day one. The livestock industry is built on relationships as much as it is on hard work and grit. As the seasons shift and we find time to reflect, now is the perfect moment to express thanks for the acquaintances, friends, and family who walk alongside us in this way of life.
In agriculture, acquaintances are often more than passing faces — they’re part of an extended network of support. Maybe it’s the auction barn crew who always greet you with a nod and a handshake, the feed store employee who keeps an eye out for your special order, the vet tech who remembers your name and your herd’s quirks, or all the friends you remember playing volleyball with at junior classic in the sweltering heat. These interactions, though brief, add up to a sense of belonging.
Then there are the friends — the ones who show up when it counts. In the livestock industry, friendships are forged in the fire of shared labor and mutual respect. There are the folks, whether family or friends, that have taken you
under their wing for breeding decisions and helping you build your herd, or the friends you make in the show barn and the ring. These are the folks who will answer the phone when you need a hand, cover your chores when you’re away, or offer advice from a place of experience rather than judgment.
Friendships in agriculture are unique in that they often blend personal and professional life. A branding turns into a potluck, a trip to a sale barn becomes a road trip memory, and slow days offer time to talk over a fence or in the cab of a truck. These are the friendships that carry us through the tough seasons and make the good ones even better.
Above all, it’s family that serves as the backbone of our industry. Whether you were born into the business or came to it later and built a family of your own, these are the people who share your struggles and your victories from the inside out.
They’re the ones who work beside you in the bitter cold or blazing heat, your tribe who helps raise children, drag calves to the show ring, to respect the land and animals, and who understand that this life is not just a job — it’s a legacy. Every chore done together, every early morning haul
and show barn rinse, and every meal shared at a restaurant after a long day in the show ring, all add another thread to the rich fabric of family life.
This holiday season let’s take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate those who share in the load. The livestock industry is not for the faint of heart, but it is rich in heart — largely because of the people who make it what it is. To the acquaintances who keep things running smoothly, the friends who always show up, and the family who hold it all together — thank you. Your presence makes the work more than a living. It makes it a life worth being thankful for.F

2025 STATE OF THE ASSOCIATION
BY HAROLD BERTZ, AGA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
“It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” is one of my favorite Christmas carols. 2025, has been a wonderful year for the beef industry: record high prices, unprecedented consumer demand, and profit in the cow/ calf sector. It has also been a wonderful year for the Gelbvieh breed and the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA). In a time of shrinking cow numbers, herd assessments for AGA grew by 1,352 head, a milestone for sure. This begins the era of growth in the Gelbvieh breed.
The 2022-2027 Strategic Plan outlines goals and strategies for the association and staff to follow for continued growth and success of the breed. The core areas of the strategic plan are : business structure, competitive position, industry relations and stakeholder profitability. A well-rounded set of strategies support each of these key goals. As we move into an optimistic 2026, it is important to review the successes for the AGA and its members from 2025.
The AGA continues to be a leader in data submission and the ability to provide the most accurate performance predictions to our customers through our relationship with International Genetic Solutions (IGS). This partnership allows for a tremendous amount of data flow that increases the accuracy of our EPDs. Through several American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) funded projects and submissions from dedicated members, the AGA added 431 head of carcass results to the evaluation. Of those, 377 were genotyped and sire verified. This data continues to prove the value of Gelbvieh cattle for both red meat yield and quality grade to the industry.
In September, AGA released three new indexes: Maternal Profit Index (MPI), Feeder Profit Index™ (FPI™) and Total Profit Index (TPI); and four new EPDs:
Mature Weight (MWT), Cow Energy Requirement (CERY), Dry Matter Intake (DMI) and $Gain. Discussed for several years, these indexes and EPDs allow commercial and purebred cattlemen to make more informed selection decisions. A large thank you to the Breed Improvement Committee, Sarah Mumm and Dr. Bob Weaber for their dedication and time in bringing these tools to reality.
The Cow Power Female Genotyping project has collected information on nearly 5,000 head since its inception. New in 2025, members can access logos and descriptions to identify cows that have achieved Cow Power Certified and Cow Power Elite status for use in marketing these powerful females and their offspring. Watch for exciting developments as we continue to expand this program in 2026.
The addition of AGA Commercial Marketing Specialist Wess Anglin is a giant step in increasing the reach of AGA marketing programs and customer contacts. The team utilizes multiple forms of media to promote the Gelbvieh message and attend various events that bring value to members. The primary focus of the marketing team is to drive value of calves sired by Gelbvieh and Balancer® bulls. This value has been seen in auction barns and video sales across the nation for all classes of steers and heifers. The team also tracks the value of bulls sold in production sales throughout the country. This year’s average price was $493 more than 2024, equating to over $1,565,768 added revenue for AGA members.
The American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) remains a vibrant part of the organization, highlighted by a tremendous AGJA Grand Ole Gelbvieh Junior Classic show in Lebanon, Tennessee. New this year for
the junior program was the addition of the Steer Profitability Challenge held in conjunction with the AGF Scale and Rail Contest at Kinsley Feeders in Kinsley, Kansas. AGJA members attended the IGS Summit Leadership Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, gaining skills and contacts for the future. The AGJA continues to offer premier programs to develop the next generation of leaders for the beef industry.
Mentioned several times in this article is the American Gelbvieh Foundation. This dedicated group works tirelessly to grow and responsibly distribute assets for research, member education and youth development. One activity that deserves special recognition is the Scale and Rail Contest and Steer Challenge. This annual event allows high-quality cattle to compete for prizes based around outstanding carcass and gain results while providing valuable information for the genetic evaluation. I encourage you to study this program and consider entering cattle.
This year great progress was made to “establish Gelbvieh as the industry standard for beef production efficiency, while increasing profit opportunities for all stakeholders,” the AGA vision statement. The AGA has a tremendous staff that is committed to executing the strategic plan, while we all have an unparalleled opportunity to see Gelbvieh cattle continue to gain market share and momentum. The cattle are right, the people are right, and the time is right! Join us as we become the fastest growing breed in the beef business. I look forward to seeing you down the road.F
DRIVING GENETIC PROGRESS THROUGH DATA COLLECTION INITIATIVES
BY SARAH MUM M, AGA PERFORMANCE PROGRAMS COORDINATOR
The Cow Power Female Genotyping Project continues to grow in demand among Amercian Gelbvieh Association (AGA) members. The project is a collaborative effort with the AGA, American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF), and Neogen to increase the number of genotypes and phenotypic information on females in the AGA herdbook. Collection of this information helps to increase the accuracy and predicting power of EPDs used to describe Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle.
There have been 60 members from the United States and one from the United Kingdom that have enrolled in the project. Through the duration of the project, there have been 4,593 female genotypes and 1,083 mature weights and body condition scores added to the genetic evaluation.
The AGA is proud to announce a new recognition program for breeders who have participated in the Cow Power Female Genotyping Project, highlighting breeders who are committed to advancing the genetics of their herds and investing in the future of the Gelbvieh breed.
Cow Power Certified herds have demonstrated their dedication by genomic testing at least 90% of their breeding-age females. This investment provides powerful insight into the hardworking Gelbvieh cow, helping breeders identify and multiply the most productive, maternally efficient, and profitable genetics in their herds. In addition to improving decision-making, this commitment adds long-term value to these females and their progeny.
Breeders who take their involvement a step further earn recognition as Cow Power Elite herds. In addition to meeting the certified requirements, elite
herds submit mature weights and body condition scores on their breeding-age females and genomic test a full year’s worth of replacement or yearling heifers. This added level of data collection reinforces a full-circle commitment to herd improvement and the future of the breed.
CARCASS DATA COLLECTION PROJECT
EPDs related to carcass traits on Gelbvieh and Balancer®-sired progeny often maintain lower accuracies due to the difficulty of obtaining individual carcass records. The focus of the Carcass Data Collection project is to provide vital genetic information to re-charge the carcass database and enhance the predictability of current selection tools. We continue to accomplish this by pairing and submitting individual carcass data phenotypes with genotypes. This year, 431 carcass records were added to the database and 377 were paired with their genotypes and sire-verified for genetic evaluation.
NEW ECONOMIC INDEXES AND EPDS
At the beginning of September, AGA released three new economic indexes, three new EPDs, and one sub-index. With this rollout, the $Cow, old Feeder Profit Index™ (FPI™), and Efficiency Profit Indexes (EPI), and the Average Daily Gain (ADG) and Residual Feed Intake EPDs were discontinued. The development of the new economic indexes underwent extensive review by the AGA breed improvement committee with development and guidance from AGA’s genetic consultant, Dr. Bob Weaber. These new indexes will continue to be reviewed and updated by the committee annually. An educational webinar was held on September 23, 2025, by Dr. Weaber about the new updates. A
recording of the webinar can be found at https://gelbvieh.org/american-gelbviehassociation-educational-resource-webinars.
Maternal Profit Index (MPI): In this production scenario, Gelbvieh bulls are mated to Angus-based cows with surplus calves marketed at weaning, with replacement heifers retained from the calf crop.
Feeder Profit Index™ (FPI™): Envisioned as a completely terminal index, FPI assumes all calves are marketed as finished beef carcasses priced on a valuebased grid. The new FPI formulation more precisely weights economically relevant traits available for selection, including the key carcass traits of Carcass Weight (CW), Ribeye Area (CREA), and Dry Matter Intake (DMI) that were not included in the original formulation. The new FPI also weights Fat Thickness (CFAT), post-weaning Average Daily Gain (ADG), and Calving Ease Direct (CED).
Total Profit Index (TPI): Combining replacement female retention from the herd with carcass endpoint for marketed surplus heifers and all steers, TPI balances both maternal and terminal selection criteria. It is not an additive of MPI and FPI, but rather an independent index built for a specific production scenario with its own unique set of traits.
Each index is reported in dollars and represents the differences of sires’ progeny values when produced under each of the specific scenarios.
Mature Weight (MW): Mature weight is reported in pounds and is computed from a genetic model that leverages information from weaning weight, post-weaning gain, and mature weights of cows. Similar to weaning weight
or yearling weight, a larger number indicates more pounds.
Cow Energy Requirement-Yearly (CERY): Mature body weight, lactation potential and birth weight are primary predictors of energy requirements. Mature Weight, Milk and Birth Weight EPDs are utilized to inform prediction equations from beef cow nutrition research to estimate differences in energy requirement over a production year. The
CERY EPD is reported in pounds of Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN) required for an age six cow.
Dry matter intake (DMI): The genetic difference in pounds of expected average daily dry matter intake of progeny. This EPD was previously evaluated biannually at Colorado State University (CSU) and is a new trait being evaluated and released weekly by IGS.
$GAIN: Reports the difference in expected marginal value of gain less the cost of feed to achieve that gain. Reported in dollars of marginal profit with more positive values representing increased efficiency and profit.F
INCREASING GENOTYPES FOR GENETIC EVALUATIONS
BY WAYDE PICKINPAUGH, AGA DNA SERVICES COORDINATOR
As we wrap up another year, it’s a good time to recognize the continued impact of DNA testing for Gelbvieh and Balancer® breeders. Throughout the fiscal year 2025, there was a total of 12,211 samples processed between GGP 100k, the Cow Power Female Genotyping Project, GGP uLD, and Seeksire™ Parentage tests. This was a 7.5% increase from the previous fiscal year. Since 2020, there have been 49,469 genomic tests between GGP 100k, GGP uLD, Cow Power, GGP 150K, and GGP 50K. In addition, there have been 10,175 Seeksire Parentage tests.
TSU sample use has grown from 77% to over 85% in the past three years, while blood and hair cards have declined from 11% and 7% to 6% and 5%, respectively. TSUs remain the preferred sample type because they provide higher-quality DNA and have a lower failure rate than blood or hair cards. Additionally, TSU samples submitted for the 100K test are automatically placed in a priority lane at the lab, helping ensure faster turnaround and timely results.
WHY IMPLEMENT
GENOMIC TESTING IN YOUR HERD?
Genomic testing is one of the most powerful tools for Gelbvieh and Balancer
breeders. It provides a clearer picture of an animal’s genetic potential beyond pedigree or performance data, improving the accuracy of selection and mating decisions. Genomics also strengthens GE-EPDs, especially for young or nonparent animals, allowing for earlier and more confident breeding choices. Overall, genomic testing helps breeders make faster, data-driven genetic progress that improves herd quality and advances the Gelbvieh breed.
WHY IS PARENTAGE TESTING IMPORTANT?
Parentage testing is essential for maintaining accurate herd records and reliable pedigrees. Confirming sire and dam improves EPD accuracy, supports registration integrity, and strengthens genetic predictability across the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed. It also helps breeders make more informed selection and mating decisions, ensuring confidence in the data that drives herd improvement.
NEW DNA TEST
This year, AGA added Bovine Congestive Heart Failure (BCHF) testing as an available option for members. BCHF is a condition that has become an increasing concern in the beef industry, especially in cattle managed under intensive feeding conditions or high-altitude environments.
By testing for known BCHF genetic markers, breeders can make more informed selection and mating decisions and confidently reduce the likelihood of passing on susceptibility within seedstock herds. BCHF test results will be reported as a Molecular Breeding Value (MBV), which represents an animal’s relative genetic risk for BCHF. If you have any questions or would like more information on BCHF testing, please call Wayde Pickinpaugh, AGA DNA services coordinator, at the AGA office or email DNA@gelbvieh.org.
TRAIT PULLS
Did you know? Members can request individual trait pulls from animals with existing 100K results. If an animal has already been tested on the GGP 100K panel, traits such as coat color, horn/ polled status, or tenderness can be obtained without submitting a new order in Digital Beef. Members may contact the AGA office or email DNA@gelbvieh.org to request these additional traits at the stand-alone price. Submitting the request directly through AGA ensures expedited results – pending request volume. Submitting a new order through Digital Beef will prompt a full reprocessing of the sample, resulting in the standard four-tosix-week turnaround.

BUSY SEASON
As sale season approaches, breeders are encouraged to plan ahead for all DNA testing needs. DNA testing typically requires four to six weeks for processing once samples arrive at the lab. However, it’s important to keep in mind that samples can occasionally fail and require reprocessing or in some cases require a new sample. After DNA is completed at the lab, GE-EPDs may take up to two additional weeks to appear on an animal’s profile. Additionally, allow extra time in cases with parentage exclusions.F

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT OF THE AGA
ONLINE REGISTRY
BY SHIANNA OCKEN, AGA REGISTRY COORDINATOR & CAMILLE HENNEBERG, AGA REGISTRY/DNA SERVICES SPECIALIST
We’re always looking for ways to make the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Online Registry work better for our members. Recently, a few helpful updates have been made to improve usability and streamline the experience for our members.

Animals with completed 100K DNA testing now feature a new 100K icon on their profiles, making it easier for members to find that information on an animal’s profile for the upcoming sale season.

Members can now save time when placing DNA orders by using the new drop-down menus to automatically fill in
the reason for the order and sample type. In addition, members can now enter the barcode for DNA samples on animals in the birth queue, and that information will automatically be carried over to the DNA queue once the animal is registered.

Members can now enter foot and leg scoring data directly into the AGA Online Registry. This new feature enhances herd evaluation and supports ongoing efforts to improve structural soundness within the breed. Members can now access detailed information and proper scoring guidelines for collecting foot and leg data by visiting https://gelbvieh.org/genetictechnology/data-collection-traits.
IN THE WEANING QUEUE:
• Dam foot and leg scores can be entered in the weaning queue when members are entering the weaning data of her calf. Members can also enter the dam’s height, weight, body
condition score (BCS), and disposal status in this section of the queue.
• For quick reference of foot, leg, and BCS guidelines, select “Help Tips” in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

IN THE YEARLING QUEUE:
• Animal foot and leg scores can be entered in the yearling queue when members are entering the yearling data of that animal.
• For quick reference of foot and leg scoring guidelines, select “Help Tips” in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

MULTIPLE ANIMAL UPLOAD
• If members have scores, they would like to enter, but the animals don’t

fall into either work queue above, an excel file can be uploaded into the AGA Online Registry for multiple animals at once.
• Go to “Tools”, “Integration”, and then “Upload”
• Download the template for “Foot and Leg” and select “Foot and Leg” from the drop-down menu.
• The instructions for filling out the template are listed. Be sure to include the prefix in front of
Tregistration numbers, no spaces in registration numbers, and no editing of the format of the template.

• Save the Excel file as a tab-delimited text file (.txt) for upload. Select “Submit” and the scores will be uploaded to the animal’s profile.F
AMERICAN GELBVIEH FOUNDATION REPORT
BY BRIAN DUNN, AMERICAN GELBVIEH FOUNDATION PRESIDENT
his last year was marked with the continuation and enhancement of several of the successful programs the American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) has developed and supported over the years.
Regarding the junior program, the AGF continues to support $4,000 in long standing scholarships given to American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) members. With a change in format this year, the announcement of scholarship winners will be made at the 2025 American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) National Convention. The AGF scholarship committee was pleased with the quality and record number of junior members who applied for the scholarships. Additionally, the AGF continued their long-standing sponsorship of the awards banquet at the AGJA Grand Ole Gelbvieh Junior Classic held in Lebanon, Tennessee.
The 2025 Steer Challenge was once again held at Kinsley Feeders with participating breeders feeding around 100 head. This year a junior component was added to the contest in conjunction with AGJA. The foundation is excited to involve the next generation in the cattle feeding and
carcass data collection portion of the industry. The cattle industry has enjoyed one of the best years in history and those who participated in the contest enjoyed record returns for maintaining ownership through harvest as well as the cattle performing well on the rail. The AGF board wants to thank Derek Martin and his crew for hosting the contest and the breeders who donated steers to the AGF. We continue to encourage breeders to participate and the delivery dates for the 2026 contest are December 8-12, 2025, to Kinsley Feeders located near Kinsley, Kansas.
In the AGF’s quest to support research and promote data gathering, we have held ‘constant’ with the financial support for the DNA testing cost of the cattle participating in the Carcass Data Collection Project. The foundation still has more allocated dollars committed to this program for additional cattle. The foundation also continues the support of the Cow Power Female Genotyping Project by offering a $5 per head rebate for those committing to the project.
On the financial side of AGF, the assets had a growth year, but to truly elevate the programs of the AGF continued
financial support is needed from Gelbvieh enthusiasts. The Foundation and our investment brokers are available for developing individual plans to support your foundation or individual interest.
In January the AGF hosted a successful sale credit auction at the National Western Stock Show. We thank the sale credit donors and those who purchased sale credits in support of the Foundation.
I truly appreciate those who have chosen to give of their valuable time and resources as we make efforts to continue to grow and improve the AGF and the breed. I would like to especially recognize Dr. Glenn Wehner for his years of commitment to the board and Tanner Aherin for leading the Steer Challenge trial. Also, thank you to the other board members and volunteers for their willingness to provide their time and talents to accomplish the board’s endeavors.
As a Gelbvieh breeder, member, or Gelbvieh enthusiast, I hope you will consider how you can participate in the activities and support of the American Gelbvieh Foundation.F

TELLING THE GELBVIEH STORY
BY MEGAN UNDERWOOD, AGA COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR
The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Communications Department continues to tell the Gelbvieh story by advancing the Gelbvieh and Balancer® message.
The AGA Communications Department has welcomed new faces to grow the communication efforts of the AGA. In May, Megan Underwood returned to the AGA as the communications coordinator and serves as the editor of both Gelbvieh World and The Profit Picture. In August, the department also welcomed two academic year interns, Kirsten Heselmeyer, AGA communications intern, and Gentry Warner, AGA visual content intern. Heselmeyer assists with member education and breed promotion efforts. Warner is working out in the field with a camera in hand to expand the AGA photo library.
DIGITAL MEDIA
The AGA social media presence continues to grow and reach social media feeds across the country and even internationaly. In 2025, the AGA Facebook page received 672,000 views and reached 149,500 Facebook users, while gaining 573 new followers. Additionally, the AGA Instagram page received 33,300 views and reached 14,400 different accounts and welcomed 189 new followers. Social media continues to be a great avenue for marketing the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed to cattlemen and women across the globe.
The AGA website continues to grow in use by both members and visitors. In 2025, the website had 43,543 active users with most landing through a direct search or social media link and received over 175,000 views. The most popular website pages continue to be sale catalogs, AGJA Junior Classic, AGA Online Registry, Gelbvieh and Balancer Edge, and Gelbvieh World.
GELBVIEH WORLD/THE PROFIT PICTURE
Both Gelbvieh World and The Profit Picture continue to be mailbox staples each month for AGA members and stakeholders. Gelbvieh World continues to serve as the voice of the AGA. Each issue continues to highlight the success of the breed and inform subscribers of beef industry news and new production practices. The editorial has focused on the maternal strengths of the Gelbvieh female through celebrating females who received Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction honors, recognizing herds that have participated in the Cow Power Genotyping Project, and brand new data from the United States Meat Animal Research Center revealing Gelbvieh females are the only Bos taurus females to add a significant contribution of 22.7 pounds of maternal weaning weight to their calves. Gelbvieh World continues to be at the center of coffee tables around the world.
The Profit Picture editorial is becoming more curated to highlight the success of Gelbvieh-influenced cattle for commercial cattlemen through commercial producer features, highlighting sale success, and including beef industry news that is relevant to their operations. Readers saw these editorial changes in the September issue of The Profit Picture through the inclusion of stories focusing on video sale success for Gelbvieh-influenced feeder cattle, future increases in hot carcass weights, and what makes Gelbvieh the maternal breed of choice. The Profit Picture continues to reach more than 35,000 cattle producers representing more than nine million head of cattle.
The AGA marketing team has been working alongside the communications staff to assist in the increase of advertising percentages of both Gelbvieh World and The Profit Picture. The increase in
advertising allows the publications to remain profitable and feature more pages of editorial in each issue.
MEMBER COMMUNICATIONS
Member communication efforts continue to be a crucial task for the AGA communications department to improve member education. The AGA E-News continues to include important deadlines, news and upcoming events for AGA members, and the emails receive a 47% average open rate. The Monthly Member Insights are designed to inform members of any major updates to the AGA Online Registry or walk members through the step-by-step processes to improve their registry experiences.
In an effort to improve member education, the AGA has sent member letters through emails regarding the release of the new AGA economic indexes and EPDs to inform members of their activation and hosted a webinar with Dr. Bob Weaber, AGA genetics consultant, to provide an in-depth look at the index development and allowed time for member questions. This webinar recording is available on the AGA website for future views.
The AGA communications staff continues to have a strong presence at AGA events, the American Gelbvieh Junior Association Junior Classic, and many beef industry events such as the Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show, Beef Improvement Federation Annual Symposium, and the Ag Media Summit.
The AGA communications department continues to tell the story of the Gelbvieh breed to the greater beef industry, and looks forward to all that will be accomplished in the coming year.F
BUILDING THE GELBVIEH & BALANCER ® NETWORK
BY TOM STRAHM, AGA COMMERCIAL MARKETING DIRECTOR
The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) staff traveled to support the members of the association, to promote the breed, and to meet and interact with the non-member customers of the membership. Throughout the year the staff attended production sales and made herd visits to members and commercial producers. Staff members also visited feed yards, auction markets and attended video sales in addition to sponsoring numerous industry events to promote the breed
AGA staff traveled to 38 production sales through the time period of October 1, 2024, through September 3, 2025. Most of the sales were in the spring of 2025 and were very well attended by optimistic commercial buyers who continue to show a strong demand for Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics. In addition, staff visited 27 breeders on their farms and ranches at times other than on sale day. Marketing staff visited a total of 47 commercial producers, feedlots, auction markets, and video sales during the same period. This includes having a booth at several summer video sales hosted by Superior Livestock Auction, Western Video Market, and Cattle Country Video. Travel in these categories is up by 170% from the prior fiscal year and is possible because of additional marketing staff.
Wess Anglin, AGA commercial marketing specialist, and Tom Strahm, AGA commercial marketing director, did an interview with Callee Fischer on Superior Sunrise during the Week in The Rockies sale.
AGA staff members attended and had a booth at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) annual convention and tradeshow held in San Antonio, Texas, in February. Staff were also promoting the breed at several
other conventions and trade shows with booths including the Texas and Southwest Cattle Raisers Association Convention in March, and Texas A & M University Beef Cattle Short Course in August. State conventions included the Nebraska and Mississippi Cattlemen’s events. Staff members attended the Beef Improvement Federation Annual Meeting and Ag Media Summit, as well as the AGA National Show and Sale, and other national level livestock shows.
Something new this year was sponsoring the Livestock Marketing Association (LMA) Annual Convention and World Livestock Auctioneer Championships in Omaha, Nebraska. We had a booth at the convention, and the AGA logo is on the truck being driven by the reigning world champion livestock auctioneer.
NATIONAL ADVERTISING
The national advertising budget was steady from the previous fiscal year, and we strive to distribute our spending across most types of media to effectively utilize the funds available and extend our total reach for breed promotion.
We place print advertising in many state, regional and national publications, to cover as many states as possible for our members and breeders. We’re adding a digital component to more of the publications we place print ads with.
The AGA once again placed inserts into carefully selected publications across the nation throughout the year to reach a circulation of around 100,000. Those publications include Progressive Cattle, Cattle Business Weekly, Western Ag Reporter, and Western Livestock Journal
The AGA acknowledges that not all individuals receive their message in the same way and therefore the AGA
has increased its online presence with digital ads. This past year we ran digital ads on CattleFax.com, DVAuction.com, CattleBuinessWeekly. com, ProgressiveCattle.com, WesternLivestockJournal.com and TheStockExchangeNews.com in addition to others.
The AGA continues to sponsor podcasts and runs commercial spots on Working Ranch Radio and Ranch It Up, to further our reach in a unique way. Some of the podcasts feature interviews with commercial producers who use Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics.
AGA started a radio advertising campaign in 2023 in partnership with Hale Broadcasting to broaden our reach. This includes headline sponsorship of Cattleman’s Corner radio program and website. The program can be heard on major ag radio stations covering eight states and on the streaming radio station.
The AGA ran an episode of American Rancher that aired in January of 2025. These episodes can be watched on YouTube and are also available at https:// gelbvieh.org/theamericanrancher. The AGA has produced fourteen episodes of “The American Rancher” that have aired a total of 33 times on RFD-TV.
The Profit Picture mailing list continued to reach beef cattle producers with over nine million head of cattle in February and September 2025. Advertising in The Profit Picture provides an excellent opportunity for AGA members to reach new potential customers.F
2025 AMERICAN GELBVIEH JUNIOR ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT
BY MARTHA MOENNING, AGA MEMBER AND YOUTH ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR
The American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) enjoyed a year of momentum and meaningful growth in 2025. In January, we concluded the Annual Donation Heifer Fundraiser with the drawing during the 2025 American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) National Sale at the National Western Stock Show. A heartfelt thank you to Beastrom Ranch for once again donating the heifer. This fundraiser remains vital to our junior programs and helps fuel opportunities for members nationwide.
Spring brought a successful AGJA Online Auction on SC Online Sales. Thanks to generous donors, bidders and promoters, the auction raised more than $8,000 to support junior activities for the year. In March, we welcomed Martha Moenning as the AGA Member and Youth Activities Coordinator.
Show season kicked off with the “Out of the Park” Classic Eastern Regional in Bardstown, Kentucky, on May 24–25 and the Western Regional in Seward, Nebraska, on May 31–June 1. These regional shows helped set the stage for the highlight of our year, the AGJA Grand Ole Gelbvieh Junior Classic in Lebanon, Tennessee.
Hosted June 23–27 in collaboration with the Tennessee Gelbvieh Association and the Tennessee Junior Gelbvieh
Association, the AGJA Junior Classic brought approximately 150 exhibitors and more than 200 head of cattle to Lebanon. The week celebrated competition, friendship and growth. The All-Around Heifer, generously provided by Boehler Gelbvieh of Nebraska, was awarded to this year’s high-point all-around exhibitor, Kole Brooks. Junior nationals also included AGJA’s annual meeting and elections where the new board was elected and Hadlee Ketcherside was selected as the 2025–2026 AGJA Ambassador.
The 2025–2026 AGJA Board of Directors is led by Gentry Warner of Nebraska as President. Braxton Murray of Oklahoma serves as Vice President. Teagan Butterfield of Nebraska serves as Vice President of Leadership. Isabel Lowe of Missouri serves as Secretary and Madalynn Johnson of Arkansas serves as Treasurer. Serving with them are Cody Brown of Kansas, Corbin Lowe of Kansas, Lincoln Martin of Kansas and Justine Pope of Nebraska. We extend deep gratitude to retiring board members Jaycie Forbes, Lily Judd, Sadie Morris and Jaylea Pope for their service and leadership.
A highlight of the junior classic was recognizing outstanding fundraising efforts through the generosity of September Farms. Kole Brooks, Owen
Spencer and Camden Cooper were acknowledged as top raffle ticket sellers for their exceptional work. Their efforts, and those of all participants, keep the donation heifer raffle one of AGJA’s most impactful fundraisers.
In July, eight AGJA members attended the International Genetics Solutions (IGS) Summit in Philadelphia where they expanded their leadership skills and connected with peers across the beef industry. In September, the newly elected board met in person to map out priorities for 2026. Their session focused on strengthening membership opportunities and improving events that create lasting memories and leadership growth for juniors. These exciting additions and enhancements to our events and activities will be announced soon. Expect new opportunities for members to serve and compete, and renewed efforts to broaden participation across the country.
Reflecting on 2025, we celebrate successful fundraising, a fun show season, meaningful leadership transitions and a community that continues to invest in youth. Thank you to every exhibitor, family, volunteer, donor and sponsor who made this year possible. With a motivated board and engaged membership we look forward to building on this momentum and making 2026 an even more memorable year for Gelbvieh youth.F

SHOWING OFF GELBVIEH AND BALANCER ® GENETICS
BY MARTHA MOENNING, AGA MEMBER AND YOUTH ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR
The 2024–2025 show season proved that Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle continue to hold their own in the show ring. Across the country, members showcased cattle that reflected the breed’s strength, functionality and quality while advancing the reputation of Gelbvieh genetics. From state fairs to national arenas, exhibitors showed genuine pride in their programs and commitment to the breed’s growth.
Participation remained strong throughout the year. The American Royal hosted 43 open and 21 junior entries, followed by 38 open and 23 junior entries at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE). The Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE) brought in 20 entries, with room for future growth. The season wrapped up with impressive turnout at the Cattlemen’s Congress, which drew 93 open and 60 junior entries, and at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS), the 2025 AGA National Show, featuring 91 open and 34 junior entries. Each of these events provided an opportunity for breeders to present top cattle, connect with fellow producers and promote the depth of Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics.
The Ring of Gold (ROG) program continued to celebrate excellence within the breed. This year’s ROG lineup included qualifying state fair shows, national events such as the Royal, NAILE, NILE and Cattlemen’s Congress, and concluded with the AGA National Show at NWSS. Four champions earned top honors representing the best of the breed and the dedication of exhibitors across the country. The ROG remains a cornerstone of the show season, recognizing quality while encouraging consistent participation and high standards in the ring.
Member participation is essential to keeping this momentum strong. Every animal entered, whether at a local or national level, helps promote Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle and demonstrates the power of our genetics. Showing is more than competition, it’s a chance to highlight your program, display the progress of your herd and contribute to the continued advancement of the breed. Several judges this year noted the utility, structure and overall quality of Gelbvieh cattle, emphasizing their consistency and relevance in today’s industry. Each time a Gelbvieh or Balancer animal enters the
ring, it represents not only the exhibitor but the entire breed. More participation means greater visibility and stronger demand for Gelbvieh genetics in both seedstock and commercial herds.
The show ring remains one of the most effective ways to promote our cattle and connect with other breeders who share a passion for improvement. For many, the friendships, mentorship and camaraderie built through showing are just as meaningful as the banners won. Whether hauling to a national event or helping at a local fair, every effort contributes to the success and recognition of Gelbvieh cattle nationwide.
The 2024–2025 season was a testament to the dedication and pride of AGA members. From early mornings in the barn to late nights in the show ring, each exhibitor played a part in strengthening Gelbvieh and Balancer’s presence. The enthusiasm shown throughout the year reflects a shared goal — to promote, improve and advance the genetics that make our cattle unique. With continued participation and support, the future of Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle remains bright.F

2025 GELBVIEH AND BALANCER ® MARKET REVIEW
BY WESS ANGLIN, AGA COMMERCIAL MARKETING SPECIALIST
Seedstock sales over the past year reflected a strong and resilient cattle market, driven by sustained demand for quality genetics and herd improvement. Despite variable market conditions and rising input costs, buyers remained focused on performance, fertility, and proven genetics. Many sales posted record or near-record averages, underscoring producers’ continued confidence in investing in superior genetics to strengthen future calf crops.
We started 2025 with the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) National Sale at the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver, Colorado. This event set the tone and built momentum heading into the spring sale season. When the gavel dropped for the final time, the 2025 AGA National Sale averaged $15,077 across 24 lots, including one bull, one semen package, two elite donors, one elite bred heifer, eight elite open heifers, four flush opportunities, three “pick of the ranch” female lots, and four frozen embryo lots.
In the spring of 2025, we gathered sale results from 50 different sales, representing a total of 3,765 animals sold — the highest number of bulls and females sold in a single season since we began collecting sale reports. Of those, 3,177 were bulls that averaged $6,597, while 588 females averaged $4,212. Bulls averaged nearly $500 more compared to
the spring of 2024, while females averaged more than $650 higher.
For the first time since 2019, purebred Gelbvieh bulls averaged higher than Balancer bulls, showing an average price advantage of $233 per head. In spring 2025, 652 purebred Gelbvieh bulls averaged $6,793, 2,087 Balancer bulls averaged $6,560, and 438 hybrid/other bulls averaged $6,305. The same trend was seen in females: 240 purebred females averaged $4,549, 276 Balancer females averaged $4,065, and 72 hybrid/other females averaged $3,652.
The AGA marketing team continues to work closely with seedstock and commercial producers throughout the year, assisting in marketing load lots of feeder cattle through the AGA Feeder Finder. This is a free tool available to any cattleman selling load lots of Gelbvieh- or Balancer-influenced feeder calves. From January 1 through September 30, 2025, nearly 21,700 head of feeder cattle were advertised through the program. Results were impressive, with several standout lots, including 240 head of 910-pound Balancer steers selling for $330/cwt, 197 head of 540-pound Balancer steers selling for $420/cwt, and 70 head of 711-pound Gelbvieh-influenced replacement heifers bringing $394/cwt. Anyone interested in learning more about the AGA Feeder Finder can visit Gelbvieh.org/exchange/ feederfinder or reach out to a member of
our marketing team. In addition to the feeder cattle advertised, we also tracked Gelbvieh and Balancer bred heifers, with top-end females commanding prices up to $4,700 per head.
The cattle market over the past year has truly been on fire, with Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle in especially high demand and consistently commanding top dollar. As we move into the Fall 2025 sale season, early results indicate another recordsetting year, with most sales already surpassing last year’s averages. It’s an exciting time to be in the cattle business— and an even better time to be raising or utilizing Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics.
The performance, versatility, and efficiency of these cattle continue to prove their value across every segment of the beef industry, from commercial producers to seedstock operations. Their ability to combine maternal strength, growth, and carcass quality sets them apart and keeps buyers coming back for more. With continued momentum in the marketplace, strong consumer demand for quality beef, and the dedication of breeders nationwide, the future looks bright for the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed — and for everyone who believes in their potential to move the beef industry forward with power, performance, and purpose.F
