A MESSAGE FROM CRY HAVOC’S FOUNDER AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

For everything there is a season…

Last year we announced that Cry Havoc Theater Company would sunset as a nonprofit organization in the spring of 2023. When I launched Cry Havoc in the fall of 2014, I intended to devote a season of my life to it before embarking on other endeavors. I hoped that Cry Havoc would inspire young artists to embrace devised theatre as a way to create important conversations within the community – something they would carry with them long after leaving the organization. And, I hoped that Dallas audiences would be challenged to see art created by young people in a whole new light. I am immensely proud of the work we (the many professional and teen artists of Cry Havoc) have accomplished over the last 9 years. We have exceeded all hopes and expectations, have opened minds and hearts in Dallas and beyond, and have raised the bar nationally for what youth theatre can look like. It has been a very beautiful season.

Whether you’ve followed us for years or are just joining us for our final production, thank you for being a part of our journey.

I’m often asked, “What is devised theater?” The simplest answer I can offer is that it’s theater created by an ensemble without a pre-written script. The director walks into the room with an idea or a concept, and the actors, designers, and other professionals work together to create something from nothing. Each sixty seconds the audience eventually sees onstage in the final performance takes roughly sixty minutes to create. In devised theatre, a lot of really great ideas get worked and reworked only to be discarded hours or days later. The process is tedious and time-consuming. It takes herculean self-discipline and a willingness to leave ego at the door. For this reason, very few adult, professional theatre companies devise theatre. And there are only a handful of youth theatre companies in the United States that solely produce devised work. We are proud to have been one of them. Enjoy the show!

SPOTLIGHT ON

DCT’s Teen Scene Program

• DCT’s Teen Scene program nurtures theater audiences, professionals, and leaders of tomorrow by providing a forum for young adults to collaborate and create together.

• Teen Scene productions focus on issues young people face including dating violence, gender identity, eating disorders, race, interactions with law enforcement, social justice, learning differences, and climate change.

• Did you know that you can visit dct.org/andiboi to rent ANDI BOI, a play focusing on one teen’s journey as a transgender high school student?

• Most of the Teen Scene productions have been commissioned by DCT based on a recognition that such a play would be a great conversation starter for a topic that warranted discussion between and among teens and those who love them.

• A post-show conversation with subject matter resources always follows each performance of a tough teen topic. The goal is to give everyone in the audience a chance to process what just happened on the stage before leaving the space.

“A theatrical experience can engage an audience in a nonthreatening, nonjudgmental way that helps them see or vicariously experience what people are dealing with and the ripple effects are tremendous. I know a young man who went up to his mother and said, ‘Mom, remember that play you made me go see? Well, I’m really worried about my friend. The exact same thing is happening to her.’”

DALLAS CHILDREN’S THEATER THANKS YOU!

List reflects gifts received as of January 18, 2022.

On behalf of the 250,000+ children and families served annually, we gratefully acknowledge our donors who through their contributions made it possible for DCT to present over 500 performances of high quality, professional theater for youth and families. Although program space limits our ability to publicly recognize only donors of $500 and above, we deeply and sincerely appreciate every contribution. As ticket sales cover only half our costs, your annual financial support is critical to introducing North Texas children to the magic of live theater. Should you wish to be added to this extraordinary list of donors or suggest corrections to our list, please contact the DCT Donor & Corporate Relations Department at (214) 978-0110 and THANK YOU!
