APA Staffing Update Departure of Tony DeSantis After more than 10 years, Tony De Santis has left APA to begin a new career as managing partner for a CPA firm in Clearwater, Florida. He will also be closer to his family. Tony is a CPA by training and spent many years in Public Accounting before his time at the National Academy of Sciences, which is where he worked before coming to APA in 2000. His departure is a huge loss for APA and the Membership Department and he leaves big shoes to fill. We will all miss him very much. Tony’s last day in the office was March 11, 2011.

Welcome Tim Jones to the Membership Department In November, Tim Jones started working in the department as the Membership Systems Analyst. He has five years of association experience and most recently worked for the National Association of Clean Water Agencies in Washington DC, where he was responsible for a variety of membership responsibilities including the administration of their membership database. Tim has worked very closely with Tony to learn as much as possible and has proven to be a great asset to our team. He can be reached at tjones@psych.org. Urysha Moseley Transfer to APA Office of Ethics and DB/SA Relations Urysha Moseley joined Linda Hughes in the Office of Ethics and District Branch/State Association Relations as Program Manager in January of this year. Urysha worked for five years as Project Manager in APA’s Department of Quality Improvement and Psychiatric Services. She brings a warm presence, wealth of experience and skills. She has already begun working directly with the district branches and ethics committees and will also be onsite in Honolulu, HI to meet with many of you personally. Urysha can be contacted at 703-907-8662 or umoseley@psych.org. APA Welcomes Julie Clements, J.D., M.P.P. as the Deputy Director for Regulatory Affairs Julie is our Deputy Director for Regulatory Affairs and in that capacity is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and preparing the Department's response to proposed federal regulations impacting our members and their practices. She will also work closely with the staff of the Office of Healthcare Systems and Financing on issues involving implementation of parity and health reform. APA Welcomes Colleen Coyle as General Counsel Colleen Coyle to serve as the Deputy General Counsel. Ms. Coyle joined our staff on Monday, February 7 and will work closely with staff, officers and external counsel to adequately address the legal needs of the APA. She was most recently, served as a partner with the law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld in Washington, DC. Her experience includes serving as outside general counsel to a variety of non-profit and for-profit companies, including a couple of membership organizations, managing (thru 2006) Akin Gump’s firm wide pro bono legal services department and serving on the Board of Directors of the Tahirih Justice Center and the Board of Advisors for the District of Columbia Bar Foundation. 2

2010 Dues Drops and Administrative Reinstatements

The three month administrative reinstatement period for the 2010 dues drops ended on January 31, 2011. During this time, 636 (22.4%) of the 2,834 members dropped, paid 2010 dues and were added back to the membership rolls. The percentage of dropped members who reinstated was actually higher than last year (22.4% vs. 19.5%); however, the net final drop count (still dropped after administrative reinstatement period) continues to increase:

Non-Centralized Billing Initiative Results In August of 2010, Membership Coordinators began the second year of the Non-Centralized Billing Initiative. Membership Coordinators Yolanda Anderson, Peggy Wardell and Chermuir Kennedy collaborated with the Northern California Psychiatric Society, Southern California Psychiatric Society, Oregon Psychiatric Association, Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians, and Greater Long Island Psychiatric Society to save at-risk members. Participating DBs shared their Drop Reports with the MCs who then developed letters and e-mail blasts to members with outstanding balances. Messages to members were sent September through October. Final drop notification was in early November. This year’s results were impressive! Together we’ve saved 200 members! The Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians began with 108 members at risk in September and eventually dropped 43 members! A special thanks to the DBs who participated with this process and partnered with the MCs to make this a success!

2011 Dues Billing The 3rd print mailing of the 2011 invoices were sent on February 22, 2011 to the following groups of members still owing dues: International Members = 743 Canadian Members = 309 Members-in-Training = 1,730 ECP = 1,632 GMs/Others = 4,825 Total = 9,239

The deadline for district branches to submit their Distinguished Fellowship nominations has been extended from Friday, July 1st to Friday, July 8th. Please contact Tara Spencer at tspencer@psych.org if you have any questions about Distinguished Fellow procedures. The APA Board of Trustees voted during its March meeting to approve the Membership Committee’s recommendation to eliminate the requirement for Fellowship applicants to have two letters of recommendation, with the understanding that the Committee will review the results two years after implementation to determine if the requirements should be revised again?
