2024 NATIONAL SUMMER CLASSIC SPONSORS

WELCOME,

We are pleased to welcome you to the Chicagoland area for the 22nd Annual National Summer Classic basketball tournament! This year’s event features teams from Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Minnesota, Puerto Rico, Indonesia and Ontario! Youth athletic competition should demonstrate high standards of ethics and sportsmanship, as well as promote the development of good character and important life skills. We hope you enjoy your time in the Chicagoland area this weekend.

And most of all please remember...

These are kids. It’s just a game. The coaches are volunteers. The referees are human. And no college scholarships will be handed out today.

Good luck to all teams!

“I never want to stop being coached. There is always things to learn and things to get better at.” - Caitlin Clark

men’s Basketball Facts

BASKETS WERE REALLY BASKETS

Back in 1891 when Phys Ed teacher James Naismith was looking for another sport for his students to play during the colder months, he hung actual peach baskets from the balcony of the gym. Each time someone scored a goal, they had to pull out a ladder and climb up to retrieve the ball. That’s likely would have meant for some extra stoppages in play!

OLYMPIC SPORT

The first time basketball was ever played as an Olympic sport was at the Summer Games in Berlin, Germany in 1936. Twenty-one different countries competed, and America ended up winning the Gold.

TWO LEAGUES BECAME ONE

The NBA was originally formed in 1949 when the National Basketball League (NBL) and the Basketball Association of America (BAA) merged together. In 1967, a rival league, the ABA, commenced, but folded nine years later. The ABA attempted some variations on the rules. Some of these ended up being adopted and are still used in the game today.

MOST POINTS FOR A PLAYER IN A GAME

The most points ever scored in an NBA game was by Wilt Chamberlain who finished one night against the Knicks in March 1962 with 100 points.

THREE POINTERS

The three-pointer now plays such a huge part of modern-day basketball. But it actually wasn’t a thing in the NBA until the 1979-80 season, where they borrowed the idea from the ABA.

DRIBBLING WASN’T ALLOWED

When the game was first invented players had to pass the ball from where they caught it. Luckily this rule didn’t stick around for too long and dribbling became a part of the sport from about 1897. Netball has kept this tactic and it still remains one of the most popular sports among all ages.

FOULS WERE ORIGINALLY PERMITTED

For the first 20 years of the game fouls were actually permitted. From 1910 players were then permitted to commit 4 fouls, which was updated again in 1946 to the five fouls as we now know it. In 1989, the NBA updated this to 6 but FIBA rules still only allow 5 before the player is sent off.

BASKETBALL SNEAKERS HAD TO BE PARTIALLY WHITE.

Basketball sneakers have always been a point of interest for players as well as a part of fashion for many years. League policy mandated that each player “must wear shoes that not only matched their uniforms, but matched the shoes worn by their teammates.” Thanks to Michael Jordan back in 1984, who decided to accept a fine each time he wore his signature Jordans, which were originally black and red. The NBA eventually changed its stance and now any colour is acceptable.

WHY IS A BASKETBALL ORANGE

Basketball originally started the game using a soccer ball. This progressed to a brown leather ball, but quite often it would be too hard to see blending with the floor or players uniforms, so was eventually dyed to be the orange colour many of us now use.

MOST POINTS FOR A TEAM IN A GAME

The most points ever scored in an NBA game by one team is 186. This was by the Detroit Pistons against the Denver Nuggets in December 1983. It was a triple overtime thriller with Denver losing by 2 points. This match also ended up being the most combined points scored by both teams in a game with a total of 300 points.

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK

There’s no denying that dunking is one of the most exciting parts of the game. The first person to dunk was in 1944, a 7ft tall center who played for Oklahoma, who was pinned by defenders under the ring and accidentally stuffed the ball in the basket. Dunking actually ended up becoming banned in the 1960’s for about 10 years, mostly because Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was dominating with this move. Luckily this ban didn’t last!

MOST

POINTS

IN TOTAL FOR A PLAYER IN THE NBA

The title of the most total points in the NBA goes to “The King” Lebron James who currently has 38469 total points, and counting! He only recently took this title from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on the 7th February 2023.

FIVE INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS HAVE WON THE NBA’S MVP AWARD.

These are Hakeem Olajuwon (Nigeria), Tim Duncan (Virgin Islands), Steve Nash (Canada), Dirk Nowitzki (Germany), and Giannis Antetokounmpo (Greece).

ALL NBA FLOORS ARE MADE FROM HARD MAPLE (Acer saccharum) from board cut 3/4ths of an inch thick. The only exception is the floor in Boston’s TD Garden, which is made of red oak.

2024: National Summer Classic Tournament Rules

• ARRIVAL: Each team should arrive at least 15 minutes before scheduled game time. Games can begin up to 10 minutes early only if BOTH coaches agree.

• ROSTER: No player may be listed on two team rosters in the same age group. Coaches must include any players that may play in any game of the tournament on their roster for the first game, even if the player(s) is/are not present at the first game. Rosters may be edited (i.e., players added or subtracted) up until the start of the team’s first game.

• PRE-GAME WARM-UP: Pre-game warm-up will a minimum of three minutes and will be more if time allows.

•HALFTIME: Halftime will be a minimum of three minutes and maximum of five minutes.

•TWO 20-MINUTE HALVES: Running clock except clock stops on ALL dead balls during the last TWO minutes of EACH half. Clock stops during all timeouts at any point during the game, and by referee discretion (e.g., for an injury).

•OVERTIME: First overtime will be two minutes, with the clock stopping on dead balls ONLY in the last ONE minute of overtime, or by referee’s discretion. Second overtime will be sudden death (first to score—FT or FG—wins)

• BONUS: One and one bonus will be shot on the 7th team foul. Double Bonus: Two shot super bonus will be shot on the 10th team foul.

• TIME-OUTS: There will be two 30-second time outs per half, which do not carry over from half to half (or to overtime). There will be one 30-second time-out per overtime, which does not carry over from 1st overtime to 2nd overtime.

• PRESSING: 7th & 8th grade divisions: with a 20-point lead or more, no press is allowed. 5th & 6th grade divisions: with a 15-point lead or more, no press is allowed. Teams in the 4th grade division may only press in the last two minutes of each half, if less than a 15-point lead. Teams in the 3rd grade division may only press in the last ONE minute of the 2nd half ONLY. No press in the 2nd grade division.

• DEFENSE: Any defense is allowed. (i.e., Man-to-man or zone)

•20 POINT LEAD: If a team is down by 20+ points in final 2 minutes of the 2nd half, the clock will only stop during timeouts and injuries.

•3-POINT FGS: Three-point field goals are allowed in all age groups.

• BALL SIZE: Boys 9U-12U Use 28.5”, Boys 13U-14U Use Regulation Ball, All Girls Use 28.5”

•TECHNICAL FOUL: Technical fouls will result in an automatic two points and the ball for the opposing team.

• POOL PLAY: Because teams are guaranteed a minimum number of games, for any team to advance from pool play to a bracketed portion of the tournament, the team must compete in all pool games.

• FORFEIT RULE: To keep the tournament games on schedule, a team that arrives more than 15 minutes late will start the game with a 15-0 deficit. The game will then consist of two 12-minute halves. If a team is more than 20 minutes late, the team will forfeit the game. The score will be recorded 15-0 in the official tournament standings.

•SEEDING CRITERIA: Seeding is based on the following criteria, in the order shown:

1. Win/Loss Record;

2. Head to Head Competition;

3. Point Differential (Maximum of +15 and -15 per game…applies to pool games only)

4. Defensive points allowed in pool games only;

5. Offensive points scored in pool games only;

6. Coin Flip

• AGE GROUPS: Complete age rules can be found online: www.nationalsummerclassic.com.

• PROTEST: A team that wishes to protest a game must follow specific guidelines. The head coach must inform the site or tournament director at least 5 minutes PRIOR to the START of the game. A protest can only be filed by the HEAD COACH of a team. At the time of protest, the head coach must produce a $100 cash protest fee, which will be returned only if the protest is won. Protests filed without the $100 cash fee will be deemed immediately invalid. If the reason for protest is age/grade related, the protesting team must first produce age and grade documents for its entire team. Then, tournament officials will verify age and grade of the team being challenged. Teams found in violation of the age/grade rules are subject to forfeiture with no refund. The tournament director has final say on all protests and has the authority to make decisions related to protests that are in the greater interest of the tournament.

•ADDITIONAL RULES: In addition to the rules listed on this document, games will be governed by NFHS rules. The tournament director reserves the right to make rulings in the greater interest of the tournament if necessary. Those rulings are final.
