Community Invited to 24th Annual African American Wellness Walk: Moving Hearts and Soles

All are welcome to register for and attend the upcoming African American Wellness Walk (AAWW), sponsored by Premier Health. Now in its 24th year, the event will provide participants an opportunity to walk virtually or attend the in-person event. More than 1,700 participated in the walk last year with $29,565 raised for Central State and Wilberforce Universities.
This event is set for Saturday, Aug. 17, at Island MetroPark, located at 101 East Helena Street in Dayton. A brief recognition program will begin at 7:30 a.m., followed by the 5k walk at 8 a.m. Research shows that
more than 30 percent of black men and women are physically inactive. Research also shows that obesity and physical inactivity increase the risks for many of the diseases that disproportionally affect the African American community, such as heart disease, cancer, and stroke.
The African American Wellness Walk brings together the Dayton, Trotwood, and surrounding communities to raise awareness of the social injustice that continues to impact the lives of African Americans in our region and across the country. The event also aims to educate and raise aware-
ness of the disparities in health risk factors and complications associated with chronic diseases among African Americans, with the goal of empowering individuals to improve their health through physical activity and positive lifestyle changes.
The walk is free and open to the public, though donations are welcomed and accepted. All proceeds of donated funds will benefit Central State and Wilberforce Universities. To register for the virtual or in-person, please visit https://runsignup. com/2024aaww

Why is Walking So Good for Individuals with Dementia?

When was the last time you took a walk?
How did you feel afterwards? Maybe a little winded, but probably pretty good and ready to relax, right?
A good, brisk walk is one of nature’s most perfect exercises because it not only works many muscles, but it feeds oxygen to the brain, increases energy and improves mood and cognition. Of course, this is especially important for individuals who live
with dementia. And it is why our Anthem Memory Care communities conduct regular walks, either on our own grounds or at one of our local parks. Residents love them. (Our staff members do too!)
What’s great about walking is that you can do it anywhere, around the block, a park, or even in your backyard or inside your home. The Mayo Clinic has a compiled an impressive list of the benefits of a brisk walk. You may
not realize just how many there are:
• Maintain a healthy weight and lose body fat
• Prevent or manage various conditions, including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, cancer and type 2 diabetes
• Improve cardiovascular fitness
• Strengthen your bones and muscles
• Improve muscle endurance
• Increase energy levels
• Improve your mood, cognition, memory and
On July 23, 2024, Bishop Richard Cox, a member of the Initiative Petition Committee and President of the Clergy Community Coalition presented Regina Blackshear, Dayton City Commission Clerk, with the Ballot Petition Signatures for the Initiative for a Public Hospital in West Dayton.
There are 1593 signatures. The requirement is 1250 signatures, with 333 additional signatures provided as a buffer. There are 127 pages plus the ballot initiative which was attached to every clipboard so that the signers of the petition had access to the ballot language and what was being placed on the ballot in November 2024.
sleep
• Improve your balance and coordination
• Strengthen immune system
• Reduce stress and tension
As for frequency of walking, most health experts recommend a short walk every day if possible. Otherwise, at least a minimum of five days per week. Much, of course, depends on your overall health and physical endur-
The first signature was received on May 9th, 2024 and the last was collected on July 21st, 2024. Well within the 90 days allotted to the collecting of the petition signatures. As written in the Dayton City Charter the petition needs to be turned into the Dayton Commission Clerk and presented to the commission the Wednesday after the signatures were received, July 24th. According to the Charter, a public hearing must be scheduled within 14 days from Wednesday, July 31st or August 7th. If the Commissioners wish to approve or amend the petition, the hard deadline for them to do so is on August 7th or 90 days before the election.
ance. If you are caring for a loved one who has dementia, try to make it a point to get them up and out for a short walk as frequently as possible. The act of walking, with a friend by your side, has many emotional benefits as well. Chances are you’ll both come back more relaxed and in a more positive frame of mind.
If they reject the petition or do not act within 30 days from today we may collect additional signatures to put it on the ballot ourselves.
Members of the Initiative Petition Committee will be present at the July 24th, 8:30 am Dayton City Commission Meeting to discuss the submission of the signatures and to present the Mayor and Commissioners with another copy of the Public Hospital Ballot Initiative in hard copy. Upon receiving the petition signatures Ms. Blackshear stated "the signatures would be submitted to the Board of Elections this afternoon."

Olympic Medalist/Activist Visits DML

Just in time for the 2024 Summer Olympics, Dayton Metro Library will host Athletics
and Activisms – The Journey of a 1968 Olympic Medalist (with John Carlos) as part of its Social
Justice Speaker Series. Athletics and Activisms will be held on Thursday, August 1, in the Main Li-
brary’s Eichelberger Forum, from 6-7:30 pm.
During the 1968 Olympic Trials, John Carols beat Tommie Smith’s world record in the 200-meter final by .03 seconds. However, due to Carlos’s spike formation on his shoes, the record was never ratified. Carlos would still go on to win a bronze medal in the Mexico City Olympic games. During the ceremony, Carlos stood beside Smith, a black-gloved fist raised in the air and shoes removed, proclaiming his support for racial equality during the Civil Rights Movement.
Join John Carlos as he reflects on how standing up for equal rights has shaped him as an athlete and an activist. Adults and teens are welcome. This free event is sponsored by Friends of the Dayton Metro Library. Seating is first come, first serve, but additional seating will be available in an overflow room set up with live streaming. Something
to Consider: A Great Recipe for Happiness
By: Brenda Cochran Contributing Writer
Most individuals are anxious to gain happiness throughout their lives, but there are a few ideas that they should remember, the first is to Let Go of What Is Gone, and Be Grateful for What Remains, and Look Forward to What is Coming.
There are some ingredients that will help when thinking of the things you will need to really make the happiness you desire. The first is knowing mindfulness meditation, 2) Gratitude, 3) Valuing social relationships, 4) Letting go, 5) Setting meaningful goals, 6) Positive light, 7) Laughing, 8) Having a sense of service to your community 9) Meaning – Be part of something bigger.
Of all of these ingredients, what about just one secret to happiness?
A study director – Dr. Waldinger says that positive relationships keep us happier, healthier, and help us to live longer. This has been named social fitness and closeness to others is what keeps people happier throughout their lives and researchers further say that it is never too late to find that happiness.
The following is one recipe for happiness: Take Two Cups full of patience, one heart full of love, two handfuls of generosity, one handful of understanding and a dash of laughter. Sprinkle gener-
ously, pack with kindness, and plenty of faith well.
Then spread over a period of a lifetime, and serve everybody you meet.
What would you say if you were asked what makes you happy? Are you sometimes wondering what is stopping any us from being happy. One question is – What is stopping us from being happy?
How can we turn our ups and downs to a life that is more fulfilling and joyful?
Sadhgur, is the founder and head of the isha Foundation based in India. He says that joy is our fundamental responsibility and answers the question on “How to be Happy in Life?” Sadhgur gives us 10 tips toward making this question a reality.
When you are fundamentally joyous, when you don’t have to do anything to be happy, then every dimension of your life, the way you perceive and express yourself in the world, you will change. You will no longer have interests because whether you do something, whether you get something or you do not do something, whether something happens, or does not happen, you will be joyous by your nature. If you are joyous by your nature, your actions will rise to a completely level. The following are ten keys toward a happy life:
• Giving – Do things for others
• Relating – Connect

with people
• Exercising – Take care of your body
• Appreciating – Notice the world around
• Trying out – Keep learning new things
• Direction – Have goals to look forward to
• Resilience -Find ways to bounce back
• Emotion – Take a positive approach
• Acceptance – Be comfortable with who you are
Now, here are some quotes concerning happiness:
“True happiness can be found in the tiniest of things”
“Choose happiness,Make someone smile
“Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our hearts”
“Happiness is free, but priceless
“Keep learning new things”
