Since announcing an emergency blood shortage earlier this month, the American Red Cross blood supply remains at critically low levels. Despite generous donors signing up to give, recent dangerous winter weather across the U.S. led to nearly 15,000 blood and platelet donations going uncollected in January. As much of the country warms up this week, we need donors to make an appointment to help rebuild the blood supply. Donors are vital to ensuring those going through cancer treatment, accident victims, and other patients have access to the blood products they count on. What You Need To Know Throughout January, blood drives have been canceled in nearly every state where the Red Cross collects blood As the country warms over the next week, Red Cross urges individuals to make appointments to donate blood or platelets via the Red Cross Donor App, RedCrossBlood. org or by calling 1-800733-2767. From the canceled blood drives, nearly 15,000 blood and platelet donations have gone uncollected. In Ohio, and across the country, people faced hazardous roads, snow storms, flight delays, shipping delays and icy conditions and, according to a press release, the Red Cross faced similar issues from weather. "Snow, ice and extreme temperatures have made it tougher to move vital blood products across the Red Cross network, affecting deliveries to hospitals in some locations," the release said. Currently the country is facing the lowest number of people giving blood in 20 years. "When fewer people donate blood, any disruption to blood donations – like recent weather systems – can have a huge effect on the availability of blood products and dramatic consequences for those in need of emergency blood transfusion," the release said.
Martin Luther King Jr., has died. He was 62. King died Sunday in California after a bout with prostate cancer, his family confirmed in a statement. His wife, Leah Weber King, said in a statement from the King Center for Nonviolent Social Change that her husband “transitioned peacefully in his sleep at home with me in Malibu.” “He gave it everything and battled this terrible disease until the end. As with all the challenges in his life, he faced this hurdle with bravery and might,” she said. His sister the Rev. Bernice King, the youngest of the siblings said: “Words cannot express the heartbreak. I’m praying for strength to get through this very difficult time.” Martin Luther King III, the Kings’ oldest surviving child, said in a state-
moment like this. We ask for your prayers at this time for the entire King family.” Dexter King attended Morehouse College and later was the chairman of the King Center, leading the efforts to protect his family’s legacy and intellectual property. He was also president of the King Estate. “He was the family member delegated to take on the mantle of continuing the precedent his father set by legally protecting his work,” the King Center said in a statement. “He devoted his life to the continued perpetuation of his father’s legacy and the protection of the intellectual property his father left behind.” In his 2003 memoir, “Growing Up King,” Dexter King addressed many subjects, including the impact of his father's assassination in 1968, when

Super Bowl LVIII Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers suffered a brutal loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Christmas Day and were edged out by the Los Angeles Rams as they played backups in the final game of the season. The 49ers did not exactly give fans major hope of winning the NFC Championship after closely defeating the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round of the playoffs. On Sunday night, they turned everything around. San Francisco climbed back against the Detroit Lions after going down
17 points at halftime. The 49ers outscored the Lions 27-7 in the second half to win the NFC Championship, 34-31. "There’s been unfinished business for a while man," 49ers head coach
African American art is infused with African, Caribbean, and the Black American lived experiences. In the fields of visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression, the African American influence has been paramount. African American artists have used art to preserve history and community memory as well as for empowerment. Artistic and cultural movements such as the New Negro, Black Arts, Black Renaissance, hip-hop, and Afrofuturism, have been led by people of African descent and set the standard for popular trends around the world. In 2024, we examine the varied history and life of African American arts and artisans. For centuries Western intellectuals denied or minimized the contribu-
tions of people of African descent to the arts as well as history, even as their artistry in many genres was mimicked and/or stolen. However, we can still see the unbroken chain of Black art production from antiquity to the present, from Egypt across Africa, from Europe to the New World. Prior to the American Revolution, enslaved Africans of the Lowcountry began their more than a 300-year tradition of making sweetgrass baskets, revealing their visual artistry via craft. The suffering of those in bondage gave birth to the spirituals, the nation’s first contribution to music. Blues musicians such as Robert Johnson, McKinley ‘Muddy Waters’ Morganfield and Riley “BB” B. King created and nurtured a style of music that became the bedrock for gospel, soul, and other still popular (and evolving) forms of music. Black
Kyle Shanahan told Fox’s Michael Strahan during the trophy celebration. "Our team was set up for this for a long time. It’s been a long year to get to this point, and we got it done today. It was hard
in the beginning but the character we have on our team, the types of guys we have, can’t wait to get to Vegas, man." The Chiefs needed to overcome plenty of obstacles as well. Kansas City lost the first game of the season to the Detroit Lions, and the offense did not look like it was ever going to come around, as bad drops, turnovers and penalties really overshadowed the play on the field. It was the first time the Chiefs Continued on Page 7

Addressing the Mental Health of Children and Youth in a Digital World We live in world full of technology. The presence of cell phones, iPads, and computers in everyday life is a reality. The impact of technology on a young child’s brain development is not widely understood. Recent research indicates that adults should create boundaries and balance for their children around screens. We must understand that with these devices, there can be a negative impact on child development and mental health. During the years of the pandemic and even to this day, families connected to loved ones with devices. ZOOM is now a familiar word to most. Further, some parents/ caregivers had to navigate working from home while caring for children. Technology can offer a quick and convenient way to keep young children occupied while adults focus on work and other priorities. Determining the best uses of tech for young children can be difficult for parents. Children gravitate toward screens, and it is not easy for adults to compete. Screens often disrupt interactions between adults and children. Real-life learning opportunities are key to building social/ emotional skills. Without meaningful interactions, children do not learn to talk about their feelings. Children should have many types of experiences to learn social skills and learn to handle stress. Children are not born resilient. They become resilient over time. Too much screen time can get in the way of critical growth. Does the benefit of screen time outweigh the risk? Technology use can disrupt the normal developmental process. The risk for children under six is magnified because of this period of rapid brain growth. According to researchers at the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University (https://develContinued on Page 4
