It is my pleasure to introduce the Year in Review for Daytona State College’s Southeast Museum of Photography (SMP). The SMP has been a part of college life since 1978, when the first photograph of the collection was acquired. It has been a joy to see its evolution over time to the world-class museum it is today.
The SMP sits at a cultural intersection between the campus and the surrounding community, and its central mission is to provide educational and cultural opportunities for both. The museum creates meaningful connections through many exhibitions with interdisciplinary themes that include – but are not limited to – humanities, science, performing arts, geography, and culture. Drawing on a rich inventory of over 6,000 photographs and photography-related objects in its inventory, there is something for everyone to connect with and learn when visiting the museum’s beautiful galleries. Students in the Photographic Technology degree program use the resources in the Museum, as do students from every other major at the college, visiting as individuals or in class settings with their professors.
Some of the programs with the most student impact include:
•The Annual Student Shows, Departures & Thesis. In 2024, Studio Arts joined this event as well. Students from the AS, AA and UCF’s BS degree programs exhibit their finest work.
•Internships and Scholarships available for students.
•Mentoring and the opportunity to curate an exhibit for the recipient of the annual Gary R. Libby Curatorial Scholarship.
The SMP also employs student workers each semester; these students get meaningful on the job experience in this unique environment. Many of the museum’s former student workers are now employed in museums and galleries around the world.
Photography is an accessible and omnipresent part of our culture - few lives are untouched by it. This broad appeal for such an attractive medium allows the Southeast Museum of Photography a point of access into the community, and a foundation on which the museum can build and strengthen collaborations with community partners.
I look forward to the great exhibitions and programs scheduled for 2025 and invite colleagues, students, and community members to visit the Southeast Museum of Photography and share in this wonderful community resource.

Southeast Museum of Photography Museum Director

A year ago, I joined the Southeast Museum of Photography (SMP) with great enthusiasm and expectations for the professional challenges and joy that lie ahead. I can attest that the SMP has some of the most knowledgeable, enthusiastic and passionate staff that I’ve had the pleasure of working with in my twenty years of museum director experience.
The museum is committed to follow museum standards and best practices. In 2024, we took the Pledge of Excellence with the American Alliance of Museum, “SMP pledges that, in fulfillment of our educational mission, we will strive to operate according to national standards and best practices, to the best of our abilities and in accordance with our recources.”
For the first time Studio Arts participated in our annual student shows, Departures & Thesis, and for the first time we showcased photographic artworks from our Collections Vault in both galleries: Collected: Past, Present and Future Acquisitions, & Documented. A Collective History: 1930 - 1970. This was a celebration of treasures from our collections with 193 artworks on display!
I am happy to report that SMP started the Friends Group in July 2024, and we are looking forward to welcoming new friends in 2025.
In 2025, I would like to focus my attention and energy on:
• Museum visibility at DSC and surrounding communities.
• Continuation of our professional relationship with professors and students at MCCMEA – School of Digital Media Production, Photography Program at University of Central Florida, and Studio Arts.
• Our new partnership with the amazing curators and owners of Cultuvue Inc., who are dedicated to “create a better understanding of the black experience in our community” and are asking young people “Ready to Dream Big?”
• Cultures around the globe showcased in an exhibition debuting in Fall 2025.
• Growth of the Friends of the Southeast Museum of Photography.
• Application for the Museum Assessment Program (MAP), as the next step towards accreditation with the American Alliance of Museums.
Ready for a new adventure? My team and I cordially invite you to visit the Southeast Museum of Photography!

EXHIBITION OVERVIEW
The Southeast Museum of Photography hosts a rotating schedule of exhibitions throughout the year.

TAKING NOTE
Colin Finlay
November 2, 2023 - February 3, 2024
Taking Note is an exhibition of photographic works, written reflections and ephemera by renowned photojournalist Colin Finlay. Featuring more than 30 photographs of musicians, including Grammy award-winning singer-songwriters and producers, it premiered at the Pabst Visitor Center & Gallery at the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Highlights of the exhibit include portraits of recording artists Aimee Mann, Beck, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Perry and Nile Rodgers, as well as record producers Rick Rubin, The-Dream and Tricky Stewart. This elite cast was assembled as part of a documentary project started by George Martin, the legendary producer of The Beatles. Titled “Soundbreaking: Stories from the Cutting Edge of Recorded Music,” it became an eight-part, in-depth look at the evolving art of music recording. For Finlay, photographing the artists was the opportunity of a lifetime.
Cultural Partnerships

In creating a formal partnership with the Atlantic Center for the Arts, our goal was to increase the overall knowledge, awareness and visibility of the museum’s exhibitions, educational offerings and outreach programs.

FACT/FICTION: CONSTRUCTED IMAGES
Andrew Sovjani
September 26, 2023 - May 5, 2024
Fact/Fiction: Constructed Images allows for comparisons to be drawn between three distinctive bodies of work: Whitewashed, Paper White and Fabrication of Space. By concentrating on the seemingly mundane—such as books and paper—Sovjani forces his audience to reexamine their relationship to these objects, altering their significance in the process. His imagery is a response to the ever-changing landscape of photography, technology and social trends. His sculptural arrangements make use of his own photographs as raw materials, along with found objects to create increasingly complex tableaux. Collectively, his process of constructing, arranging and revising is part of an overall performance just as important as the finished print. His artistic intention—and intervention—is evident in each piece.

FRAMING A LIFE: Select Works by Joseph A. Pineiro
February 6 - April 13, 2024
Framing a Life presents an overview of Joseph A. Pineiro’s photographic endeavors and the remarkable individuals he captured on film during his long-standing career with Columbia University. Arranged by theme—arts and culture, public service, news and media— the exhibition presents a wide range of black and white photographs of famous Hollywood personas, political dignitaries and journalists.
Produced in partnership with Antonia Pineiro, and Columbia University Archives.
SUMMER SHOWCASES
The Photography and Studio Arts Programs are an enterprise of the School of Digital Media Production within the Mike Curb College of Media, Entertainment & Art.

DSC DEPARTURES
May 2, 2024 - July 31, 2024
DSC Departures is a student exhibition that highlights photography by recent graduates of the Daytona State College photography program. These graduates continue to take their place among the nation’s leading photographers.
The images exhibited reflect the wide variety of work emphasizd in the AS degree program. This year’s exhibition was juried by Daytona State College alumni Robert Snow, who specializes in advertising, editorial, lifestyle, sports and action photography. He singled out First, Second and Third Place awards, as well as an Honorable Mention and Juror’s Choice.

STUDIO ARTS
May 2, 2024 - July 31, 2024
In 2024, the students from Studio Arts participated for the first time in the annual student Departures exhibition. This artwork allowed vistors to explore a variety of studio art mediums—such as painting, sculptures and ceramics.

UCF THESIS
May 2, 2024 - July 31, 2024
Now in its thirteenth year, the UCF Thesis exhibition showcases portfolios by graduating seniors of the Bachelor of Science in Photography program at the University of Central Florida—Daytona Beach. Through this unique partnership between Daytona State College and the University of Central Florida, students leave this program with strong technical, creative and critical thinking skills— empowering graduates for lifelong success in a variety of professional photographic fields.
The students’ Thesis project is a culmination of four years of study in photography. Their personal investigations into a variety of interests and issues as broad as surfing culture and community, personal identity, heritage and traditions, architectural studies and even the tenets of the genre of psychological and supernatural horror.
The UCF - DSC joint AS to BS Photography program provides students the oppurtunity to work with a diverse professional faculty in an environment that encourages excellence and innovative approaches to photography that will position graduates to compete in a rapidly changing industry.
FOCUS ON COLLECTIONS
Both galleries feature historic and culturally important works from the museum’s collection.
COLLECTED
Connecting Past, Present & Future Acquisitions
September 3, 2024 - February 2, 2025
The Southeast Museum of Photography’s collection has been carefully cultivated over the years, representing a wide range of photographic styles, genres and techniques. Collected presents 114 works by 50 artists, including some of the most innovative photographers of the 20th century. This diverse presentation includes Lola Álvarez Bravo, Harry Callahan, Lotte Jacobi, Yusuf Karsh, Sally Mann, Duane Michals, Barbara Morgan, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol and Edward Weston, among others.
Illuminating shared aspects of the human experience, these photographs underscore the importance of the artist’s creative process and the act of personal expression. Coupled by stylistic similarities or juxtapositions, the sequencing of works allows for new associations to form. Collected allows audiences to appreciate these works anew—individually and as a whole— by drawing connections between artists, and across genres and years.
Collected also highlights the recent growth of the museum’s holdings in contemporary art, presenting new acquisitions generously donated by Colin Finlay, Michael Grecco, Andy Mattern, Lara Rossignol and Christian Weber.

EXPLOSIONS
November 7, 2024 - January 7, 2025

DOCUMENTED
A Collective History: 1930-1970
November 7, 2024 - January 7, 2025
Offers a poignant view of American society during the early to mid-twentieth century, with a specific focus on themes of recovery, discovery and reform. Dorothea Lange, Arthur Rothstein, Marion Post Wolcott—and other FSA photographers—provide a visual record of life in Depression-era America.
Wayne F. Miller chronicles the wartime experience, putting human faces to the conflict overseas and depicting the aftermath of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima. The postwar years, from 1945–1970, shifted towards greater inclusion with a push for social, political and economic change. A key component of the exhibition centers around the documentation of marginalized and oppressed groups. Powerful imagery by Benedict J. Fernandez, Charles Moore, Gordon Parks and Flip Schulke became instrumental to the civil rights movement and racial equality. Eddie Adams and Builder Levy exposed the hunger, poverty and health risks associated with the coal industry, notorious for its racially stratified workforce and exploitation.
Against the tumultuous backdrop of the late sixties, NASA’s space exploration made history. Bill Ander’s “Earthrise” from Apollo 8 and Neil Armstrong’s photographs from Apollo 11’s mission to the moon remain the most iconic images of the modern age.

Explosions consists of multiple high-speed images of fireballs and explosives ignited in mid-air. The exhibition features 29 photographs–including 7 large-scale reproductions–which reflect Weber’s preoccupation with what he refers to as the ‘architecture of the explosion.’ His objective was to record the many formations of these intricate structures, from their overall design to the smallest of details. No two images are alike–some are spherical, a dynamic palette of bright hues spreading outwards across the frame, while others are amorphous, a chaotic blending of smoke, ember and flame. The longer one takes to pause and contemplate each work, the more details emerge: fiery tendrils, hot sparks, vaporous plumes, billowing columns of smoke and flashes of light. By utilizing methods of high-speed capture, the artist reveals phenomena otherwise imperceptible to the human eye.

PERMANENT COLLECTION
SMP has amassed a collection with approximately 5,201 images and 1,931 objects, dating back to the late 1800s, through a range of images by prominent photographers. The collection includes representation from major photographic process, including Tintypes, Daguerreotypes, Albumen Prints, Cyanotypes, Gelatin Silver Prints, and C-prints.
The process of monitoring, documenting, registering photographic artworks in PastPerfect, and taking care of our collections is ongoing. It is overseen by the Museum Technician, Alexi Chennells.
Thanks to the National Endowment for Humanities Preservation Assistance Grant, we were able to purchase environmental monitoring dataloggers for temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH). The dataloggers TR7A series & Software program from T And D Corporation. They were installed in the first-floor gallery, library, second-floor gallery, collections vault, and in the exhibit preparation room. In addition to monitoring the T & RH, the grant allowed us to purchase a light meter and pests monitoring traps.
· 500 glass lantern slides and 372 antique/vintage cameras.
· 100+ examples of alternative photographic processes, “chemigrams.” gift by Nolan Preece.
· 50+ confirmed images taken by Farm Security Administration (FSA) artists from 1935 to 1944.
· 39 photographs by world-renowned photographer, Gordon Parks.
We would like to thank the Florida Department of State, Division of Arts and Culture for their support with the General Program Support Grant, the Volusia ECHO Grant, and NEH.

Overall, the Museum is improving environmental conditions, ensuring the photographs and photographic materials in its care can be preserved and maintained for future generations. With a continuation of the preventive preservation activities, SMP will consider a path towards accreditation with the American Alliance of Museums. We have already taken the pledge of excellence and are preparing to apply for MAP (Museum Assessment Program) in 2025.

Hello to my fellow Friends of the Southeast Museum of Photography! Thank you for being part of this wonderful group of supporters of our Museum and of the photographic arts. Our group was established to gather with others who enjoy the SMP and to spread the word about it. With many exciting things happening at the museum, our first job is to be aware of all that the museum offers. You can learn more in this publication, online through the website or with social media. I encourage you to stay in touch with your museum, we don’t want you to miss anything!
One of the best ways to keep up with the SMP, of course, is to visit. Make an afternoon or evening of it, enjoy a film screening, see one of the temporary exhibits, or attend one of the excellent receptions that Julia and her team puts together. It’s hard to beat seeing physical photographs, up close and in person, well curated on the wall before you. Contemplate and discuss the photographs with others. What is the story, the context, why was it taken, what was happening, and what does it say about the photographer? We are fortunate to have the SMP and I want all of us to enjoy it, to learn from the photography, and to become bigger fans.
Finally as a Friend of the Museum, you may be asked “why.” Why are you a member, and why should others support the SMP? The obvious answer – which was mine originally – is that you enjoy photography and this museum that celebrates it. There may be more though. As part of Daytona State College and its goal of fostering learning and knowledge, the SMP has an opportunity to be more relevant. We can use the photography exhibits that we secure and our fabulous collection as creative tools to educate and inform, beyond the walls of the College, creating insightful engagement with a broader community.
Thank you again for your support, I look forward to seeing you at the Museum!
