On behalf of the Board of Trustees, the Associate Board, and the staff of the Dayton Art Institute welcome to Backyard Ball … a fresh new take on Art Ball!

Thank you for your continued support of the museum through the trying times of 2020 and 2021. The DAI made the difficult decision not to hold an in-person Art Ball again this year, for the safety of guests and staff, and began planning for this at-home Backyard Ball event earlier in the spring.

I hope you are enjoying your party packs at each of your own Backyard Balls. You are in for a treat this evening, as we bring you a special video party, featuring a tour of past Art Ball featured artworks from the collection, music and more about tonight’s featured wines.

If you do not have your Grand Draw Raffle tickets yet, you can still purchase them through Sunday, June 27. Scan the QR code in this program to buy yours. The five prize packages feature gift cards purchased from local Dayton businesses that usually donate gift cards to the Art Ball raffle.

We want to thank our Associate Board, without whom Art Ball and Backyard Ball would not be possible. They work tirelessly every year to create a special evening, and we thank every member for their efforts! Our Backyard Ball chairs, Ariel & Brian Walker, were originally supposed to chair the 2020 Art Ball. They generously agreed to lead this year’s Backyard Ball, and selected Janet Fish’s Embroidery from

Uzbekistan, with its colorful feast of fruits, as the featured artwork.

Thank you, as well, to the DAI’s incredible staff for their hard work in putting this evening’s at-home event together. They have been an amazingly resilient team throughout the pandemic.

BACKYARD BALL FEATURED ARTWORK

This year’s featured artwork, selected by Backyard Ball Chairs, Ariel and Brian Walker, is Embroidery from Uzbekistan (2008) by Janet Fish. It was added to the DAI collection in 2009 with funds provided by the Medici Society.

Through this painting of a vibrant stilllife of fruit and flowers upon an ornately patterned embroidery, the artist depicts an interplay of light, shadow, reflection and color.

Growing up in the British overseas territory of Bermuda, Fish cites the tropical island landscape, with its lush foliage and vibrant blue seas, as significant to her interests in light and color studies. Also influential to her artistic development was her grandfather, American Impressionist Clark Voorhees, as well as Josef Albers, whose color theory course she took while a graduate student at Yale University. Works by both artists can be seen in the DAI collection galleries.

Over the last 50 years, Fish has drawn on her embrace of change and her belief in the underlying interconnectedness of things to fuel her remarkable painting practice. She philosophizes that to stop changing is to die, a conviction that drives her unending formal experimentation and her mastery of multiple genres. Change inhabits each painting as well. The objects that serve as armatures for color and light in her work are exuberant in their state of flux. The long conceptual, formal, and iconographic history of the still life genre confirms our own experience.

Though the artist works against the idea of capturing a photographic instant, she preserves a mood, a quality of light, and a sense of place to which we can continually return.
