Art Ball June 14, 2025

Welcome to the 68

th

anniversary of Art Ball, Dayton’s

longest-running

and premier formal event!

First, join me in thanking the Dayton Art Institute’s dedicated Associate Board and this year’s Art Ball Chairs, Brianna Gabriel and Dori Gabriel, for making this evening a success. Tonight is only possible thanks to their hard work and enthusiasm. Art Ball is the second-largest fundraiser for the museum and funds raised tonight ensure art is celebrated and accessible, for everyone, all year long.

Whether this is your first time at Art Ball, or you are a returning guest, your presence is truly an honor. From impressive fashion to delicious food and drink to vibrant entertainment, tonight is a celebration of art in multiple forms. This year’s theme, “The Dance of Light and Shadow,” recognizes the impact of women artists at the turn of the 20th century, a period of newfound freedoms and challenges that paved the way for a more vibrant and diverse artistic landscape we continue to enjoy today.

This year has already been an important one for your DAI. While we are not alone in economic struggles being felt by many nonprofits and museums especially, we have worked diligently to reduce expenses and implement creative revenue strategies for 2025 and beyond. Most importantly, our community has not

seen any changes to the service they have come to expect. Our world-class exhibitions, educational programs, signature events and more continue to bring us together, help us explore, and foster creativity. We look forward to seeing you here again, soon, to enjoy the unique DAI experience. Our incredible staff is working even harder to make sure we fulfill our mission of Through art,we create transformative and diverse experiences, strengthen communityconnections and inspire imagination. I thank and applaud them for their commitment.

The health and vitality of the museum is a direct reflection of your contributions, no matter the size. This evening, we invite you to take your chances with a Grand Draw Raffle ticket, bid in our Silent Auction, or make a donation that is meaningful to you. Together, we are making a powerful statement: art changes lives, and art matters to Dayton.

Cheers to another memorable Art Ball and thank you for being with us!

Warm regards,

Inspiration for the 68th annual Art Ball Photographer Jane Reece

Art Ball includes the longstanding tradition of drawing its inspiration from a masterpiece within the DAI’s permanent collection. The vision for this year's event is a selection of photographs by Jane Reece, an acclaimed early 20th-century photographer, known to be some of Reece's most striking works. In this series, she overlaid negatives she took of dancer Harry Losée with stencils to create bold, geometric lighting patterns and shapes.

whose art shone a spotlight on Dayton art, and we want to be sure everyone knows her.”

“As Dayton natives and a mother-daughter duo, we wanted to choose an artist who was also a Dayton woman to inspire this year’s Art Ball,” explain Art Ball Chairs Brianna Gabriel and Dori Gabriel. “Jane Reece was a powerhouse in her field,

Reece lived most of her life in Dayton, Ohio, with a studio just down the road from DAI, on Riverview Avenue. She became the first woman portraitist admitted to the Photographers Association of America and received the organization’s top award in 1907. Reece is recognized for her strong artistic vision and leadership in photography during a changing time in the medium's history. In 1952, she donated more than 9,000 negatives and 400 photographic works to the Dayton Art Institute, the largest body of her work anywhere.

History of Dayton Art Institute’s Art Ball

For 68 years, Art Ball has been the Miami Valley’s premier social event. This annual black-tie gala is attended by community and corporate leaders, top museum supporters and community patrons, and raises critical funds for the museum’s mission. It is always held the second Saturday of June.

Art Ball has its origins in the Junior League of Dayton, part of an international women's organization that aims to improve communities through volunteerism and leadership training. Shortly after its founding in 1919, the League began an annual holiday charity ball, selecting different local nonprofits as beneficiaries each year.

logistics and ensuring its success as a signature museum fundraiser. The first Art Ball was held on Dec. 7, 1957, then transitioned from a holiday affair to a spring soiree in 1963 before moving to June in 1965.

In the mid-1950s, Sally Henn Riffle, JLD president and membership secretary for DAI, was looking for a way to attract more patrons and community members to the museum. She suggested the JLD select the Dayton Art Institute as its sole holiday ball beneficiary, and create a transition plan that would hand over the event to the museum as Art Ball.

Out of this plan, the DAI Associate Board was born in 1962 to help manage and host the event for years to come, overseeing key event

Art Ball has had many different iterations over the years – in its early days, various community members hosted dinner parties at their homes before Art Ball began at 9 p.m. and ended at 3 a.m., with a midnight breakfast buffet! – but the common thread of enjoying an elegant and entertaining evening in support of the museum has remained constant.

With an average attendance of 725, Art Ball has raised more than $4 million to sustain museum operations, grow educational programming and acquire new art. Since 2004, Art Ball chairs have selected a piece from the museum’s collection to showcase at the event, bringing greater awareness to the treasures living right here in our community.

As we approach the event’s “platinum jubilee” (70th anniversary), a renewed focus on maximizing fundraising opportunities and highlighting artists promises to make Art Ball a gem of the Gem City for years to come.
