Waterford Dental Health was opened by Dr. John O’Loughlin in 1959 and has remained locally owned since while continuing to uphold the highest standards of dental care that was instilled upon the practice 64 years ago. As the practice grew over the years, Dr. O’Loughlin eventually sold the business to Dr. Barry Bienstock and Dr. Bruce Patterson, confident he was leaving it in good hands.

Drs. Bienstock and Patterson continued to keep the practice up to modern dental standards while growing the team by bringing in additional dentists Dr. Lisa Nogacek and Dr. Kenneth Nogacek in the early- to mid-1990s. Dr. Jason Campbell joined the practice as well in 2008. Fol-

lowing the retirement of Dr. Bienstock in 2011 and Dr. Patterson in 2021, Dr. Kenneth Nogacek and Dr. Campbell are now owners and have added a new associate to the team, Dr. Ross Sanfilippo.

Waterford Dental Health offers a variety of services, ranging from routine cleanings to root canals, crowns and bridges. Frequently, customers will ask, “What is a Bowerbird?”The Bowerbird is a bird found in the Southern Hemisphere. There are 27 species of bowerbirds. The Satin Bowerbird, which we identify with, is common in eastern Australia. The male has dark blue-black iridescent feathers and a yellow bill. What makes this bird so interesting is the males’ mating ritual of constructing an upright structure, or bower, out of sticks which he decorates with objects such as shells, fresh flowers and blue found objects to attract his mate. In 1979, Owner Rick Hatch began his career in the oil heat industry with (then local oil company) City Coal. Here he met his future wife and business partner, Wanda, who began working in the City Coal office in 1983. With a solid handle on the oil heat and HVAC industry, they ventured off into the world of small business in the late ‘80s, and early ‘90s. In 2004, the couple decided to go into business for themselves and established R&W Heating Energy Solutions, working out of their home. A Rooted Passion: The Story of Derek Skinner and Swing Bridge Tree LLC

From Small Town Beginnings

Growing up in the picturesque town of East Haddam, Connecticut, Derek Skinner was always surrounded by the natural beauty of trees and land. From a young age, Derek found himself drawn to the outdoors, where he developed a deep love for nature. “Being outside felt like home,” Derek recalls. “I knew early on that I needed to build a career that allowed me to stay connected to the environment.”

A Call to Serve

At 18, Derek felt another calling—one to serve his community and country. He enlisted in the Marines, embarking on a journey that would shape his character and work ethic. Alongside his duties as a Marine, Derek worked for some of the most highly rated tree companies in Connecticut. We opened our doors in October 2004 at 190 Flanders Road, Niantic. We are part of the Wild Birds Unlimited franchise, but we are locally owned and operated. We live here in our community. Our mission is “We Bring People and Nature Together, and We Do It with Excellence.”

We are open seven days a week, only closed on major holidays. Every day we enjoy talking with our customers about the birds in their yards. We are here to help assist with any issues they might be having with their birds. Whether it’s dealing with nuisance birds (starlings and grackles), how to deter those nuisance birds from eating everything, or dealing with critters (squirrels and raccoons) getting in their bird food.

If a customer is trying to attract a specific species to their backyard, we’re here to offer them suggestions and guidance. Many customers have been seeing Eastern Bluebirds in their yards. They are such a beautiful bird to have visit, the males are a vivid deep blue on the back and head with brick-red on their breast and neck. While the females are grayish on the back with blue tinges on their wings and tail and a subdued orange-brown breast. For those wanting to attract them to their yard, we talk with them about their current habitat to see if it’s even possible that they will get them. Sadly, not everyone will get them in their yard. Our goal is to help our customers get the most enjoyment out of their backyard birds.

Did you know that water is vitally important to birds? Whether they are feeder visitors or not, birds need water. Offering a dependable source of water is probably the simplest and most important step you can take to greatly increase the

variety of birds in your yard. It can also significantly increase your enjoyment of your birds by allowing you to watch their often comical antics as they drink, bathe and preen. Every other day you should empty the bath, scrub it with a brush and rinse it well. Refill with fresh water. If the alga builds up quickly, you can use ten parts water to one part bleach solution to clean the bird bath. Be sure to rinse it well and place fresh water in the bath.

Celebrating 26 years! Carelot Children’s Center: Building Strong Foundations for a Lifetime of Learning

Carelot Children’s Center was founded 26 years ago as a fulfillment to a lifelong dream of Waterford native and Chief Operating Officer Holly Vlaun Bevilacqua, whose love for children and passion for education inspired Holly to give back to her community.

Holly began by opening “Little Ducklings” home daycare in the heart of Waterford, and it didn’t take long for word to spread and for Holly to garner a reputation for quality childcare. Thus began her mission to build strong foundations for a lifetime of learning. Holly brought onboard her two sisters, Heather Hunter-Cable and Heidi Pafias both experienced teachers— and with only ten students enrolled, she opened the family-run Carelot Children’s Center on February 23, 1998.

As Carelot continued to gain recognition, enrollment increased and so did the demand to grow her business. Holly and Larry Bevilacqua, CEO opened a second center with twice the capacity in East Lyme in August 1999, which has nine classrooms and can accommodate 167 students.

In August 2004, The Friendship School—a regional multicultural magnet preschool—opened its doors, and once superintendent Randall Collins caught wind of Carelot’s reputation, he urged Holly to consider submitting a bid to create a

After a rewarding first year for the Carelot Clubhouse, the contract was put out to bid and awarded once again to Carelot for a three-year term, beating more than six competitors. The program continues to operate at The Friendship School today, providing childcare to several families in the community.

Riding off this success, in 2007 Carelot opened two more full-service learning centers in Brooklyn and Killingly that serve up to 158 children collectively. Carelot has operated before- and after-school programs in the town of Waterford’s public schools for 15 years now.

Carelot Children’s Center continues to provide early childhood care and education for children ages six weeks to 12 years, and prides itself on a program that fosters social, emotional and intellectual development through hands-on learning while tailoring the curriculum to meet the individual needs of each child. It also takes great pride in its staff of caring and dedicated teachers, and is even pleased to welcome many of its past students as current employees—a testament to the strong sense of community fostered within each center.

Carelot’s impact on the community spans far beyond childcare. Their team gives back through donations supporting local community members in need as well as delivering cards and gifts to fire

stations, police stations, nursing home facilities and more. They also host free community events such as Harvest Festivals, Trunk or Treats, Carnival and more. Carelot is excited to host their One Stop Holiday Shopping event this Fall which supports the Ronald Vlaun Scholarship Program which has given over $32, 000 in scholarships to graduating seniors.

The centers and programs all provide a warm, loving atmosphere for children to learn, grow and explore and their own pace.

Carelot’s vision for the future is to continue uplifting children in the community and build a strong foundation for them as they embark on their educational journey.

Carelot recently hosted the 2024 Children’s Champions by the Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance to Rep. Kathleen McCarty and Rep. Holly Cheeseman. The award recognizes people who’ve made “significant contributions to improving the lives of young children in Connecticut.”

Carelot is currently offering one free week of tuition for all newly enrolled preschool students for the 2024-2025 school year in any of their learning centers.

After many years in NYC, Deke returned to the beach town where his family summered and opened a high-end deli, featuring the gourmet foods his NYC clients loved. Long story short, it was a big mistake. The locals in this charming beach town weren’t ready for Tunisian Crab Cakes or Thai Quail in the deli case. Undeterred and always willing to take a risk, Deke pivoted. He googled “how to make bagels,” and as Deke experimented with different flavorings; malt syrup vs. molasses, adjusting ingredients to find the right crust texture, Deke’s Bagels was born.

Since the pivot to Deke’s Bagels, the business has been thriving and expanding, successfully navigating any challenges that arise. With the original storefront in Niantic, CT, and the newer location in Guilford, CT Deke’s bagels are becoming a staple for bagel lovers all over Connecticut.

Deke and his team have ambitious plans to further grow their bagel empire and plan to open a warehouse and retail shop in the Mystic, CT, or Westerly, RI area, while continuing to operate their Guilford and Niantic locations. Family owned and operated Buon Appetito carries on the legacy of former Dew Drop Inn

Many who lived and worked in this area back in the twentieth century remember the old Dew Drop Inn on Route 2 in North Stonington. If you drove from Norwich to the Westerly beaches back then, you knew the iconic place well and very likely stopped there at least once, probably more.

When I was a boy, my grandmother, Myrtle, and her good friend Leo Jacques, would take my sisters and me to Misquamicut State Beach in Rhode Island, where Leo, even in his 70s, would join me and plunge happily into the heavy surf there. Leo was a widower and my grandmother a widow, and it wouldn’t be a stretch to say they were in love. Despite many hardships in her life, Myrt was a warm, happy woman, but never happier than when she was with her special friend.

Leo was a well-known war veteran, ever active in the local VFW and a fixture in Norwich’s Memorial Day and Veterans Day parades. I remember how proud I was

to know this decorated war veteran who was always recognized and applauded as he marched by in the parades.

Those were always such fun times, and Leo was certainly a good sport about Myrtle’s three young grandchildren tagging along to the beach. And certainly, no return trip from Misquamicut to Norwich on Route 2—otherwise known to us locals as the Norwich-Westerly Road—was complete without a stop at the old Dew Drop Inn.

We’d usually stop in for apple pie a la mode or some other sinful, homemade dessert that was on the menu. The place was always bustling with a clientele that ranged from hungry truck drivers to families like ours returning from a day at the beach—all drawn by reasonably priced comfort food and prompt, friendly service.

As I recall, Dew Drop Inn enjoyed self-appointed fame for purportedly being the last restaurant in America to offer a five-cent cup of coffee. To my knowledge,

no one ever challenged the claim, so it must’ve been true, at least in these parts.

In later years, when I was in high school and college, the same tradition carried over. Whether it was with dates or a carload of my buddies, we had to stop at the Dew Drop Inn on the way back from the beach. Our orders were usually for the deliciously greasy cheeseburgers and fries and, yes, maybe some apple pie a la mode if there was enough room and sufficient spending money.

As time passed, however, the Dew Drop Inn, sadly, fell upon hard times and closed even though the price of a cup of coffee had since been raised. The old white wooden building that had been well-maintained while the restaurant was open had deteriorated into something of an eyesore.

Years later, it was replaced by handsome Tuscany contemporary structure that houses Buon Appetito, a wonderful Italian restaurant owned and operated by the

Marku family.
