Not only am I excited about the warm weather, but I also cannot wait to watch nature flourish. There is no better time to explore all the shoreline offers. In this issue, you will find many ways to make the most of the season here.
You’ll also find features on local makers and seasonal events that showcase the creativity of our communities. If you’ve been looking for a new tradition to add to your calendar, or even just a fun afternoon out, this issue is full of ideas.
And of course, no holiday season would be complete without a bit of light. We’ve highlighted some of the region’s most beloved illuminations—from tree lightings in the town green to dazzling, unique displays like the lobster trap tree in Stonington. Each one tells its own story about how our shoreline towns celebrate the season.
Discover Haflinger Farms, a charming pick-yourown daffodil and greenhouse farm in Higganum, as it opens its doors for the season in April, welcoming visitors to enjoy fields of vibrant flowers. This year is especially special because it celebrates 30 years with a lineup of free and family-friendly events. Be sure to read the history of this farm and why it makes the perfect spring outing.
The holidays can be busy, even overwhelming at times, but I hope this issue gives you a reason to pause and appreciate the joys of the season. Maybe it inspires you to try something new, to visit a place you haven’t yet, or to savor the traditions you already love.
Spring also marks the return of the hummingbirds!
If you are looking for a fun spring project, try making a hummingbird feeder to support these tiny visitors. In this issue, we not only tell you how to make your own feeders, but we also gain insight from local experts into how these birds travel thousands of miles to make their journey here each spring.
For me, this time of year is about connection—sharing meals, exchanging stories, gathering together, and celebrating the communities we call home. That’s at the heart of what we do here at On the Shoreline, too: tell stories that connect us, remind us of what we share, and celebrate what makes this region so special.
So grab a cozy blanket, settle in, and join us in exploring the holidays on the Shoreline. I hope these pages bring you as much joy in reading as we had in creating them.
If you are looking for a new book to enjoy on a sunny afternoon, why not sit outside with a book from one of our talented shoreline authors? I am sure you will find something perfect for the season in our round-up.
Wishing you warmth, light, and laughter this holiday season.

La Plage Mystic
La Plage, an upscale waterfront restaurant and oyster bar, opened its second location inside the Delamar Mystic Hotel in February. Overlooking the river and framed by historic ships, the oyster bar and dining room blend French technique and Portuguese-tinged coastal flavors, led by Executive Chef Frederic Kieffer (with Chef Roldao Carvalho contributing to the menu’s Portuguese heritage). Whether you’re starting with oysters or creamy Caldeirada fish stew or indulging in broiled sardines with piri-piri aioli and heritage pork chop with clams, every dish honors both local seafood and seasonal ingredients. With its elegant raw-bar, scenic patio, and thoughtful nods to Mystic’s maritime past—including a vintage scull suspended overhead—La Plage offers a vibrant new option for both locals and visitors looking to dine by the water.
La Plage, located inside the Delamar Mystic Hotel at 105 Greenmanville Avenue, serves lunch Monday through Friday from noon to 2:30 p.m., weekend brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 2:30 p.m., and dinner Sunday through Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m.

Want to cook to impress at the next holiday event? Try making this recipe from Chef Joel Gargano, the chef, owner, and operator of Grano Arso, an Italian eatery and bar in Chester.
“This pasta dish is a hallmark of Grano Arso and a special dish to me,” says Gargano. “It encompasses the sensibility of Italian cooking and using what is local to New England. It’s special because the toasted rye flour used in the recipe is made from local grain in the style of ‘grano arso’ flour, the restaurant’s identity. A special product made in Italy for generations, we take our own approach and use rye. The ragu made from CT mushrooms, made into an unctuous sauce, laden with local cream and Mascarpone.”
Toasted rye tagliatelle with mushroom ragu
Egg yolk pasta dough
Servings: 4
INGREDIENTS:
• 225g Semolina Pasta Flour
• 25g Toasted Rye Flour (grano arso)
• 190g egg yolk
• 50g whole egg (1 each)
DIRECTIONS:
1. In a medium-sized bowl, add flour and make a well in the middle.
2. Pour the eggs into the middle and stir to incorporate the flour.
3. Mix until a rough dough forms. Transfer to a table.
4. Begin kneading the dough until a smooth ball has formed. It should be neither tacky nor dry. Kneed for 4-5 minutes.
5. Cover the dough for 30 minutes before using it at room temperature. It’s okay to let the dough rest overnight.
6. Sheet the dough thinly on a pasta roller. Using the tagliatelle cutter, cut the noodles and dust with flour. Cook within a few hours or freeze for future use.
Mushroom ragu
INGREDIENTS:
• 200g (1 onion), thinly sliced
• 10g garlic, sliced
• 50g extra virgin olive oil
• 1 tbsp Chopped rosemary
• 150g butter
• 2lbs mushrooms (oyster, shitake, and maitake) cleaned and cut into 2-inch pieces
• 100g white wine
• 25g sherry wine
• 300g heavy cream
• 1 tbsp Porcini mushroom powder
• 100g mascarpone
• A dash of red wine vinegar
• Salt and pepper to taste
• 3 ounce baby spinach
• Pecorino romano as needed
DIRECTIONS:
1. Using a large, wide-bottomed pot, begin by sauteing the sliced onion and garlic in the extra virgin olive oil over medium-high heat for 5 minutes. Season with salt.
2. Add the chopped rosemary and thyme.
3. Remove from the pan and hold.
4. Add butter to the same pot and saute the mushrooms until well-browned. Season the mushrooms with salt at the beginning of the cooking process. The pot will look overcrowded at first, but the mushrooms will shrink as they cook. It’s essential that the flavor is developed in the mushrooms at this stage, so take your time.
5. Once the mushrooms are browned, deglaze the pot with white wine and sherry wine. Return the sauteed onions to the pot.
6. Add in heavy cream and reduce by half.
7. Finish ragu with mascarpone, porcini powder, and vinegar. Season to taste.
8. Boil tagliatelle for two and a half minutes in salted water. Toss with the sauce until it is evenly coated. Add the spinach until wilted. Serve with pecorino romano on top.

The story of Mystic’s Holiday Lighted Boat Parade
By Jenn McCulloch
When Santa Claus makes his grand entrance to Mystic River Park each November, he doesn’t arrive by sleigh. Instead, with help from his elves at the Mystic Chamber of Commerce, and in true shoreline style, he arrives aboard a tugboat—waving to the cheering crowd while bundled children on both sides of the Mystic River hold their wish lists, waiting. It’s a sight that has marked the unofficial start of the holiday season in Mystic for over twenty years.
“Even though the event draws people from all over, because you’re watching on the banks of the river on both the Groton and Stonington side, there’s room for everybody,” says Bruce Flax,
president of the Mystic Chamber of Commerce. “People make a tradition of the event and come back year after year because coming to Mystic after Thanksgiving has that hometown feel, and it’s the perfect place to be for the holidays.”
Santa arriving on the John Paul, owned by Cross Sound Ferry, at 2 p.m. is just the start of the day’s festivities on Saturday, Nov. 29. Afterward, Santa heads to Mystic River Park to start the Chamber’s all-day holiday kickoff, which also features the tree lighting at 6 p.m. and the Holiday Lighted Boat Parade at 6:15 p.m.
While the event has now become a tradition for many families, this spectacle of lights and maritime spirit originated from one person’s vision.
For information, visit mysticchamber.org or download the “Go Mystic” app.
“It was the brainchild of then-Chamber President Tricia Cunningham, who had the idea for a parade of boats all decorated for Christmas,” says Flax. “This unique combination of maritime tradition and holiday cheer draws families and visitors to Mystic for a magical start to the holidays.”
Once ashore, Santa greets his young fans, listens to their Christmas wishes, and poses for photos. Carolers from Ledyard High School and local community organizations enhance the festivities, selling hot cocoa.
Last year marked the first time the Chamber hosted local craft vendors, offering guests the opportunity to do some holiday shopping. Flax is working on bringing back this feature for this year’s event. Additionally, the event coincides with Small Business Saturday this year.
“Mystic is all small businesses with independent owners, so you can see Santa on a tugboat, see the Lighted Boat Parade, the tree lighting, and do local shopping,” says Flax. “Plus, we have so many great restaurants downtown, so there is a lot to choose from.”
What began as a local celebration has evolved over the last two decades into one of Mystic’s most anticipated events. Attendance has grown dramatically, from approximately 12,000 people five years ago to over 20,000 today. The event is so iconic now that “Mystic Christmas,” a 2023 Hallmark movie, featured it.
“From the very first parade, it caught on and has drawn very big crowds,” says Flax. “After it was featured in Mystic Christmas, that really helped it keep its legs and made it even better. There was a reach all around the country.”
Flax says he has heard of a couple of other lighted boat parades, including those on the coastlines of California and Florida, but he doesn’t know of any others that take place in true wintry weather. The cold, especially for the crews on the boats, can be bitter, but despite the weather, there are always two to three dozen boats in the parade.
Participation in the Holiday Lighted Boat Parade is open to the public, with a requirement of only a toy donation to the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center, which is located on-site that day. Crews compete for prizes in five categories, including “Most Charismatic Crew,” “Innovative Vessel,” “Best Dressed Vessel,”
“Most Holiday Spirit,” and the coveted “Miss Mystic Vessel of Grandeur.” Boats are judged on creativity and team spirit.
“It’s a great show of community involvement from people who put their boats in the parade,” says Flax. “I love the spirit the boat owners have in decorating boats and creating this parade. They like to show off their creative side with how they decorate the boats, and it’s amazing.”
With visitors lining both sides of the river, boats launch from Mystic Seaport, a longtime partner of the Chamber and a key part of the event’s success.
“Mystic Seaport Museum is very involved in organizing the boats and making sure they go in the water in the right order,” says Flax. “It’s a big lift for them and without them, we wouldn’t be able to do this.”
As the event has expanded, so has the need for planning. The influx of over 20,000 visitors requires careful coordination of parking and logistics. The Chamber’s website and app — Go Mystic — not only provide detailed information on parking and viewing areas but also include attractions, lodging options, dining spots, activities, and more.
“The app is great and really user-friendly — it has all of the event information, plus everything you need to know about Mystic,” says Flax, who also recommends attendees dress warmly and arrive early. “It’s the end of November by the water—it can be pretty cold, but once you’re here and the boats start coming by, you forget all about it.”
Despite the larger crowds, the parade has maintained its small-town charm. Local businesses decorate their storefronts, restaurants fill with diners grabbing a warm meal before the show, and volunteers work behind the scenes to ensure everything runs smoothly, including volunteer cadets from the Naval base. The Chamber also partners with the Mystic Museum of Art, located on the river, to offer a VIP viewing experience that includes heaters, food, and drinks.
“The whole day is the perfect way to kick off the holiday season right after Thanksgiving,” says Flax. “From shore to boat, it’s a big community celebration.”
How to give back to the Shoreline
By Alicia Gomez
The holiday season is a reminder that our shoreline communities are strongest when we look out for one another. There are plenty of ways to give back and make a difference right here at home.
Support local nonprofits
The APT Foundation, with clinics in New Haven, North Haven, and New London, provides treatment and recovery services and welcomes donations to help expand programs. The Shoreline Soup Kitchens & Pantries, serving 11 towns from East Haven to Old Lyme, is always in need of food and financial support, particularly during the colder months when demand increases. Branford’s Community Dining Room offers meals and fellowship, and welcomes both volunteers and contributions.
Volunteer in your community
Volunteering is another meaningful way to give back. Many shoreline organizations need extra help during the holiday season, whether it’s serving meals, collecting donations, or assisting with events. The Connecticut Foodshare distribution center in Wallingford coordinates volunteers for food assistance across the region. Even a few hours of your time can go a long way to support a struggling family in your community.
Donate goods
Consider donating winter coats, hats, gloves, or blankets to shelters like New Reach, which serves the Greater New Haven area, or to local clothing banks. Many shoreline churches also host seasonal drives, which can connect you with families in need.
Shop local
Giving back can also happen in smaller, everyday ways. Shopping locally not only supports small businesses but also strengthens the community.
Be a neighbor
Checking in on an elderly neighbor, shoveling a walkway, or delivering a warm meal can brighten someone’s season more than you might imagine.
No matter how you choose to give back—through donations, volunteering, or simple acts of kindness—your efforts help keep the shoreline strong, connected, and full of holiday spirit.

Holiday traditions
Light up the shoreline
By Alicia Gomez
The holidays are a perfect time to start new family traditions. Along Connecticut’s shoreline, communities work hard to create festive events that bring neighbors together in the spirit of the season. From boats on the Mystic River to the glow of a lobster trap tree in Stonington, here are a few small-town holiday traditions worth experiencing this year.
Mystic Lighted Boat Parade
In keeping with Mystic’s maritime heritage, the holidays are marked by a parade of lighted boats gliding along the Mystic River. For more than two decades, the Mystic Lighted Boat Parade has drawn crowds to the waterfront as vessels decked out in lights sail past, with Santa arriving on a tugboat.
The boats are judged and awarded prizes in different categories. Spectators can enjoy the show for free from the riverbank or purchase a VIP viewing package through the Mystic Museum of Art.
This year’s parade takes place in late November. For details, visit mysticchamber.org.
Madison Green
In Madison, the historic town green becomes the hub of holiday festivities. An annual parade of fire trucks escorts Santa into town, while the Yale Spizzwinks perform on the green. Local businesses offer in-store specials and events, turning the downtown into a festive marketplace.
This year’s Shop Small Saturday falls on Nov. 29, beginning at 11 a.m. The annual tree lighting will be held on Dec. 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. on the Madison Green. For details, visit madisonct.com.
Guilford Green
Guilford has celebrated the holidays on its green for more than a century. The first tree lighting was held in 1917, and the tradition continues with caroling, community cheer, and festive lights.
“Tree lighting is a wonderful time to celebrate the season of lights and community,” says Dee Jacob, president of the Shoreline Chamber. “The tradition of caroling continues with many school groups raising their voices in song. It also showcases the lights of our local businesses that we especially want to keep in mind when shopping during the holiday season.”
This year’s tree lighting will take place on Friday, Dec. 5, on the Guilford Green.
Ivoryton Illuminations
The village of Ivoryton glows throughout December with thousands of lights synced to holiday music broadcast on a local FM radio station. The Ivoryton Illuminations celebration has become a favorite for locals and visitors alike.
“Illuminations has become a way for townspeople and visitors to kick off the season together,” says Jonathan Steele, president of the Ivoryton Village Alliance. “Strolling through the lights while holiday music plays over FM radio creates a festive and joyful atmosphere that people return to year after year.”
The official Lighting of the Tree and Illuminations celebration features family-friendly activities along Main Street, including a petting zoo, scavenger hunt, cookie decorating, food from the Essex Lions Club, and a visit from Santa Claus. Santa traditionally leads the countdown to lighting the 70-foot evergreen before meeting children at the Ivoryton Playhouse.
According to Steele, this year’s display will debut state-of-the-art pixel lighting for the first time. The celebration takes place on Friday, Dec. 6, in downtown Ivoryton.
For more information, visit ivorytonalliance.org.

Stonington Lobster Trap Tree
At the Stonington Town Dock, holiday tradition takes a nautical turn. The Lobster Trap Tree rises about 40 feet tall, constructed from hundreds of lobster traps decorated with colorful buoys painted by local artists, families, and schoolchildren.
The collaborative art installation has become one of the shoreline’s most distinctive holiday landmarks, drawing visitors by day and night. The display is free to view and makes for unforgettable photos. For dates and details, visit lobstertraptree.com.
From fire truck parades to twinkling harbor lights, the shoreline’s celebrations showcase the creativity and closeknit spirit of Connecticut’s small towns. Whether it’s a century-old tree lighting, a lobster trap transformed into art, or boats glowing on the Mystic River, these traditions light the way for community, joy, and new memories.
Delight in the sounds of the season
From the symphony and choruses around the region comes music for the holidays
By Gretchen A. Peck
For Connecticut’s shoreline and across the southeast, the holidays are a time to worship, to celebrate, and to commune with friends, family, and neighbors — occasions made all the more special when they’re accompanied by sounds of the season. This holiday season will see music spilling out of churches, schools, and theaters across the region, from grand symphonic compositions to classic carols. If the jingling of bells and the swell of choirs feel like the soundtrack to the season, southeastern Connecticut has plenty in store for the holidays.
Cappella Cantorum
Cappella Cantorum was founded in 1970. “[The group] emerged from the belief that a need existed for a continuing opportunity for the Lower Connecticut River Valley and shoreline community to participate in the fellowship of choral singing,” according to its website.
Today, under the direction of Music Director Irina Georgieva, Ph.D., an associate professor of conducting at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Cappella Cantorum comprises three choral groups: the Cappella Cantorum Masterworks Chorus, the Cappella Cantorum International Tour Chorus, and a choral group that performs the “SummerSings” series of concerts.
The Cappella Cantorum

The Cappella Cantorum Masterworks Chorus will perform its winter concert on Sunday, Dec. 7, featuring music by Bach and Rachmaninoff, as well as a selection of seasonal favorites. The concert starts at 2 p.m. at the John Winthrop Middle School auditorium in Deep River. A complimentary reception will follow the concert. Tickets are available at cappellacantorum.org.
The Masterworks Chorus will also perform Handel’s “Messiah” at Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center (“The Kate”) in Old Saybrook on Dec. 21. The performance begins at 2 p.m., and the audience is invited to simply enjoy the music or sing along. Tickets for this event are available at thekate.org or by calling the center’s box office at 860-510-0453.
Consonare Choral Community
Founded in 2018, the Consonare Choral Community is a nonprofit choral arts organization. Its mission is “to build community through choral music in Connecticut.” The chorus will perform a free, candlelight concert — the Candlelight Concinnity: Music to Illuminate the Holidays — at 7 p.m. on Dec. 14 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Manchester. For more information, check out the website: consonare-sing.org.
The Cappella Cantorum Masterworks Chorus will perform two concerts this holiday season, including its flagship winter concert, to be held on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. at the John Winthrop Middle School auditorium in Deep River.
Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra
Conducted by Toshiyuki Shimada, the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra will be hosting a Holiday Spectacular, featuring Broadway star Christopher Faison, at the Garde Arts Center in New London on December 6. Tickets are available through the Garde’s box office or via the Symphony’s website, ectsymphony.com.
The Symphony’s Chorus will also perform Handel’s “Messiah.” At press deadline, the date, time, and venue for the performance were still being confirmed. The public is encouraged to visit ectsymphony.com for updates.
The GMChorale
Based in Middletown, the GMChorale was founded in 1977 as the Greater Middletown Chorale. Today, it’s a 90-voice choral group with a stated vision: “GMChorale believes in the transformative power of music in the lives of singers and audiences. We strive to use this power to connect with our wider community, enriching lives by cultivating an appreciation of music in people of all ages.”
On Dec. 13, GMChorale will join the Chancel Choir of the First Congregational Church in Cheshire for a special performance: Festival of Carols—Traditional Christmas Anthems, Readings, and Carols. The performance starts at 5 p.m.; further information is available on gmchorale.org.
The Mystic River Chorale
“Our first official concert is always in January, but we do try to do our part to spread some holiday cheer in December,” says Rachel Smith, the chorus manager for the Mystic River Chorale. “It’s our opportunity to give back to the community and support some of our local businesses and institutions. … For the past several years, our chamber singers have performed a free [December] concert of holiday music at the Mystic & Noank Library.”
“As a group, we always go caroling during the downtown Mystic Stroll,” Smith added. “Caroling during the holidays brings so much joy! Participating in the Stroll is our chance to show our appreciation of the local merchants and the work of the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce. We’ve done other holiday outreach over the years, including caroling at the Seaport, the Mystic Aquarium, the Velvet Mill, and Olde Mystic Village. However, the library concert and the Stroll are always on our calendar.”
The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra is scheduled to perform a “Holiday Spectacular,” with special guest Christopher Faison, at the Garde Arts Center in New London on Dec. 6.

Holiday treasures
Made by shoreline artists
By Alicia Gomez
Art makes the perfect holiday gift—and lucky for us, the shoreline is full of creativity. The artists featured here are all members of the Shoreline ArtsTrail, which brings together professional artists working in studios across Branford, Guilford, and Madison. Each fall, the ArtsTrail hosts an Open Studios Weekend, where the community is invited to step inside these spaces, meet the makers, and see their work up close.
For the holidays, many of these artists create giftable pieces—such as ornaments, collages, prints, and more—that capture holiday spirit. Here are just a few ArtsTrail members offering handmade works of art that would make truly special gifts.
Martha Link Walsh
Martha Link Walsh specializes in the art of cut paper, creating intricate yet whimsical pieces that tell stories of tradition and holiday magic. Her handmade glass ornaments feature delicate cut-paper designs that can be custom-made or chosen from her collection of seasonal favorites, including snowflakes, cozy cottages, and festive cats. She also releases an annual holiday storybook, this year featuring The Fairy Wren Who Found Her Voice.
“This holiday is all about magic,” Walsh says. “Folk tales, traditions, and seasonal surprises inspire my creations.”
Autumn Mandasl Artwork by Martha Link Walsh
Walsh’s studio and gallery are open Tuesdays through Saturdays, with her entire collection on display. Her work is also available online at marthalinkwalsh.net. This season, she is offering swinging cut-paper ornaments inside glass balls, cut lanterns, prints of Santas from around the world, and her storybook with an accompanying ornament.
Anne Coffey
Mixed-media collage artist Anne Coffey has a love affair with paper. Her pieces combine patterned papers she’s created with maps, stamps, old textbooks, and other found materials.
For the holiday season, Coffey has been creating a series of small wooden houses, each one decorated with her signature collage work. The series proved so popular during last year’s ArtsTrail that she’s continuing it in 2025. Giftable in size and full of charm, the houses are as much conversation pieces as they are art objects.
Coffey’s work can be found at the BACA Gallery in Branford, as well as at regional exhibitions hosted by the Essex Art Association, Lyme Art Association, Clinton Art Society, and the Guilford Art League.
Steven Plaziak
Guilford-based watercolorist Steven Plaziak captures the essence of New England in brushstrokes that feel both immediate and timeless. His landscapes—whether painted en plein air or in the studio—focus on atmosphere and light. “My goal is to distill a scene into its essential forms and values, creating work that feels both immediate and fresh,” he says.
This winter, Plaziak is offering small, original watercolors and matted works in various sizes, including snowy landscapes and shoreline views that make thoughtful holiday gifts.
“I love painting winter watercolors,” he says. “The white snow, soft light, and quiet atmosphere make each scene feel fresh and full of possibility.”
Plaziak’s paintings can be purchased through his Guilford studio, at seasonal art markets such as the Shoreline ArtsTrail in November, or online through his portfolio at artworkarchive.com/profile/steven-plaziak.

David Frank
HOLIIDAY TREASURES
In his North Guilford studio, David Frank handcrafts pottery one piece at a time, pouring months of work into every cup, vase, lamp, plate, and bowl he creates. Each piece undergoes an intricate process: it is first fired in an electric kiln, sanded, and glazed, then loaded into a propane gas kiln that can hold up to 125 pieces. The firing takes a full day after a night of warming, and cooling takes several more before the kiln can be opened. From start to finish, a single piece may take three to four months to complete.
This holiday season, Frank’s gallery will be filled with approximately 500 pieces, offering shoppers a wide selection of giftable pottery. ‘ “I see my work as a narrative,” he says. “Each piece tells a story and carries its own emotion.”
Frank’s work is available at his gallery at 1549 GreatHill Rd. in Guilford (by appointment), online at davidfrankpottery. com, and during his holiday openings on Nov. 29 and 30 and Dec. 6 and 7.
Jackie McGuire

“Everyone needs a little bling during the holidays,” Jackie McGuire, who handcrafts each buckle with care.
Shoppers can browse the collection at Creek Chic Boutique, located just north of the Guilford Green at 20 Church Street.
To see even more of what shoreline artists have to offer, mark your calendar for the 2025 Shoreline Arts Trail Open Studios Weekend, happening Nov. 9 and 10. The event invites visitors into the studios of more than 30 artists across Branford, Guilford, and Madison, offering the chance to meet the makers, watch demonstrations, and discover one-of-a-kind pieces. It’s the perfect way to celebrate creativity—and maybe even start your holiday shopping early.
