Branford Boasts High Voter Turnout By Nicholas Checker Special to The Sound

Branford had been controlled largely by Republicans in recent years, but on Election Day, Nov. 4, people showed up in big numbers to elect Democrat Josh Brooks as first selectman and give the party control of the Board of Selectmen as well as wins on other

major boards and the Representative Town Meeting. Democrats swept through most of Branford’s districts Nov. 4, except for the seventh, where two of the three RTM candidates elected were Republicans. “The biggest support both parties felt was the record turnout,” said Republican Town Chairman Ray Ingram. “Our goal was to see

8,000 voters, and we wound up with a good 9,500. That’s 40% (turnout) … unheard of in local elections! We’re delighted to have that kind of commitment on the part of our public.” But in Branford on this Election Day, the Democrats won the day as Brooks squeezed
