Letter from our Head of School

Dear Davis Academy Families and Friends:

As we excitedly begin the 2023-2024 school year, it is important that we reflect on our past accomplishments, and thank all of the individuals who had such a positive impact on the lives of our students through their active involvement and generous giving during 2022-2023, our 30th anniversary year!

The following pages highlight the many supporters who continue to make The Davis Academy an extraordinary place for our community’s children:

• Our highly successful Davis Fund Campaign, our school’s most important fundraiser, exceeded our goal and raised more than $680,000 through contributions that support the daily learning experience. Thank you to the hundreds of caring parents, grandparents, alumni, alumni parents, faculty, staff and caring community donors who gave so generously.

• Our 30th Anniversary was a yearlong celebration with events and programs bringing together the many generations whose lives have been impacted by the Davis experience, culminating with a fabulous Community Celebration that was also a tremendous fundraising success, with generous sponsors and a sold-out crowd contributing in excess of $800,000 for our beloved school.

• Our 24th Annual Golf Tournament held at The Golf Club of Georgia brought together over 144 players, more than 50 corporate and individual sponsors, and 75 volunteers to “play a round” in support of our school. This successful annual event raised over $121,000 for our school community.

• With strong participation in Georgia’s Private School Education Tax Credit program by so many in our community, The Davis Academy was able to allocate over $730,000 in tuition scholarships for students.

In addition to my profound gratitude for the generosity of each and every donor to our school, I am deeply grateful for the involvement of the many volunteers who give of themselves in so many different ways. This includes tremendous appreciation for the leadership of our 2022-2023 Board of Trustees, and in particular, outgoing Board President, Lisa Freedman, for her guidance, commitment and support throughout her term. We are truly blessed to have people like Lisa and our incoming President, Micah Goldstein, who dedicate their time and energy in an effort to strengthen and secure the school for future generations.

To each of you who contributed to The Davis Academy, through your financial and/or volunteer support, I truly thank you. We simply couldn’t do all we do, along with our amazing faculty and staff, without you.

2022-2023 Annual Giving Campaign

Tuition alone only covers 80% of the annual cost to provide the the highest quality academic, Jewish, and enrichment experiences at Davis. A gift to the Davis Fund is the most important financial contribution we ask of every parent, alumni parent, grandparent, faculty, staff, alumni and community friend. The generous support from our collective community increases the value of The Davis Academy experience for all students.

In the 2022-2023 school year, the Davis Fund directly impacted the following:

• Campus security and maintenance

• New laptops and iPads for students

• Professional development for faculty

• Innovative learning programs

The Davis Fund is our school’s most critical, annual fundraising effort.

Why We Give:

The Kaplan Family

Enrolling our children in The Davis Academy was closely tied to our decision to move to Atlanta in 2004. From the very first day, we were embraced by a community of educators who radiate warmth and genuine care. The school’s commitment to academics ignited a love for learning within our children. Our children received a strong foundation in various academic disciplines and sports, as well as essential skills such as problem-solving, collaboration, and resilience.

One of the most profound aspects of The Davis Academy is its unwavering commitment to Jewish values. The school seamlessly weaves these values into every facet of daily life, nurturing our children’s spiritual growth and instilling a connection to their heritage through vibrant holiday celebrations and a deeprooted commitment to tikkun olam. Our children developed a strong moral compass and a genuine desire to make a positive impact in the world. The Davis Academy creates an environment where Judaism is not only learned but lived, fostering a deep sense of identity along with building the cornerstone of their education.

The Davis Academy is a bedrock of the Atlanta Jewish community. We are grateful for the transformative impact the school has had on our family’s life. Our continued support is a testament to our deep belief in The Davis Academy’s mission and the unique and enriching educational experience it provides to future generations.

For our family, Judaism is more than a religion, it is an identity and something to be nourished and cherished not only at an early age, but throughout life.

That is why The Davis Academy has been such a natural fit for our family. The Davis Academy provides a nurturing and inclusive environment where students can embrace their Jewish heritage, while promoting a curriculum designed to encourage academic excellence focused on critical thinking, problem-solving, and embracing new ideas and technologies.

The Davis Academy is a positive and collaborative culture, where you can instantly feel the ruach of the school from the moment you step inside the building. The Davis Academy fosters social, emotional, spiritual, and academic growth, while instilling a love for learning, Judaism, and lifelong friendships. The Davis Academy even prioritizes relationships that extend beyond the classroom, involving parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and alumni on a daily basis.

One of the highlights for us at Davis is the celebration of Shabbat. We absolutely love the rituals of Shabbat on Friday mornings at the school and again at night in our home. “We always have a lot of fun when Jack, Nate, Dean, and Elliotte break into Shabbat songs they have learned at school!”

Thanks to The Davis Academy, our children are motivated and encouraged to be their best, as well as empathetic, responsible, and caring citizens of the world. Our children are excited to go to school each and every day, and are clearly learning how to self-advocate, think creatively, independently, and problem solve, while also developing genuine and meaningful relationships.

Our entire family is dedicated to supporting The Davis Academy. We thank them for their leadership, academic excellence, devotion, heartfelt love, and passion that is showered on each child of every family.

We moved our oldest child to The Davis Academy in the middle of his Kindergarten year. We were extremely nervous and uncertain about our decision to uproot him from the school and friends he had known for the past four years. The day before he started, we received a video from one of the other children in his new Davis class, welcoming him to Davis and telling him how excited she was to be his new friend. While just a simple gesture, it meant so much to us at an extremely vulnerable time for our son. To us, that video is a symbol for what Davis represents.

Since that day, we’ve been welcomed with open arms into the Davis community. It’s a place where our kids have created amazing new friendships, as well as establish their Jewish identities. It’s a place with amazing teachers that have begun building not only our children’s academic confidence, but their selfconfidence which they will rely upon for the rest of their lives. It’s a place where we as parents have built incredible life-long relationships. It’s a place where our kids come home eager and proud to tell us about their achievements and challenges each and every day.

We give because we want others to be as fortunate as we’ve been. We want others to experience the Davis community and all the wonders it has to offer. We look forward to many more wonderful and special years for our three children at The Davis Academy!

Molly and Andrew Light with Levi (3rd grade), Charlie (1st grade) and Josie.

What will be your legacy?

At one time or another, we all reflect on what our influence will be on future generations and what will happen to the institutions that we love and have supported for many years. By including The Davis Academy in your estate plan, you can assure that the traditions and institution that means so much to you today will exist for future generations. We are proud of the establishment of The Davis Academy Legacy Society.

A Legacy gift for The Davis Academy is a meaningful and relatively simple way to give to our community. Your Legacy can be easily created by including a bequest in your will, by adding The Davis Academy as a beneficiary on a portion of your retirement plan or by naming The Davis Academy as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy.

A Legacy gift to The Davis Academy is a lasting impact on our ability to:

• Provide financial assistance to all qualified students who wish to enroll

• Attract and retain compassionate, dedicated and experienced educators

• Ensure our students connection to their Jewish identity.

For more information on how to establish a Legacy gift or if you have already included The Davis Academy in your estate plan, please contact Elisa Prager, Director of Institutional Advancement at eprager@davisacademy.org or 678-527-3326.

Georgia Education Tax Credit Program

The Georgia Private School Tax Credit Program makes an extraordinary impact on The Davis Academy student body, providing financial aid for qualified students with financial need. State residents, S- and C-corporations, LLCs, partnerships and trusts can redirect a portion of their Georgia tax liability to a Student Scholarship Organization in support of financial aid at one or more independent schools of the taxpayer’s choice.

New for 2024

Through our new, exciting partnership with Georgia GOAL, you can utilize your state income tax dollars to provide tuition assistance to deserving students seeking a Davis Academy education—without any additional cost to you.

How it works and what’s new

In Georgia, state residents, S-and C-corporations, LLCs, partnerships, and trusts can redirect a portion of their tax liability to a Student Scholarship Organization (SSO). This year, Davis will be working with an SSO called Georgia GOAL. Participation is as easy as submitting basic contact information to Georgia GOAL and designating The Davis Academy. Whether or not you have previously applied for the Georgia Education Tax Credit Program, everyone must submit a new application to GOAL.

Tax Credit Limits Based on Filing Status:

• Single Filer – $2,500

• Married Separate Filer – $2,500

• Married Joint Filer – $5,000

• Pass-Through Owner (not making HB 149 election) – $25,000

• C Corp, Trust, or Pass-Through electing to pay tax at the entity level (HB 149) –75% of annual tax liability

Any questions about our new partnership with GOAL or the ALEF Fund can be directed to Elisa Prager, Director of Institutional Advancement (eprager@davisacademy.org) or to Georgia GOAL’s operations team (goal@goalscholarship.org).

Visit www.goalscholarship.org or scan the QR code to submit your application today.

Establish a Tribute Banking Account

Establishing a Tribute Banking Account is a simple and convenient way to make honorariums and memorials. With an initial contribution of $300 to establish the account, your contribution can be used for an unlimited period of time, and your Tribute Banking Account will function just like a checking account. Each time you make a tribute, a personalized card will be promptly mailed acknowledging your gift in honor or memory of the person you designate. The amount of your gift will be deducted from your account. To become a “Tribute Banker” or to add to your existing Tribute Banking Account, contact Sharon Yokelson, Gifts and Records Manager, at 678-527-3317. You can also make a tribute online any time on our school’s website at davisacademy.org.

Additional Fundraising

Endowment Funds

An endowment is a pool of funds that continues in perpetuity providing the ongoing support for priority program needs and for the future benefit and growth of the school. Endowment funds are active funds to which contributions and tributes can be made at any time.

Gifts to an endowment make a lasting tribute in honor or memory of individuals or loved ones. The principal of an endowment fund is invested for future earnings, providing a stream of income to support current needs.

These endowment funds enhance the educational experience of many students and faculty. We are grateful to these families for their foresight and thoughtfulness in making gifts of permanence in areas crucial to The Davis Academy’s future.
