Looking up Mill Street in 1915. On the left is PW Belcher’s Tea Store, and further up the road is the Wantage Tramway Office, with its distinctive terracotta facade. The tram carried goods and passengers from the station house, located behind the office, to Wantage Road GWR mainline station, just outside what is now Grove. Just past the tramway office the roof of the Baptist Church is visible.

Apart from the traffic very little has changed on Mill Street! The buildings are recognisably the same, though the Tea Store is now looking for a new tenant. The tramway building closed in 1925 when the passenger service stopped, and

The next building along is the timber-framed Falcon House, the oldest house in town, dating back to 1646. It was once owned by “Blind Man Massey” but by now was C. Cooper’s shop, selling groceries, confectionary and tobacco.

The Victoria Cross Gallery has a colourful history. Originally an inn called the Red Lion, it became a covered corn market and community hall in 1865. By the 1890s the building was in a state of disrepair so was bought by the Town Commissioners for the benefit of the town. Lady Wantage oversaw its renova-

tion and Lord Wantage donated 44 portraits of Victoria Cross heroes, which were displayed in what became known as the Victoria Cross Gallery, or the “VC”. Part of the gallery was converted to a fire station in 1910 and firefighters and engines such as this one, the Merryweather, were housed there till 1967, when the current fire station

opened in Ormond Road. The smaller vehicle is the Johnny Barr, a hand-pumped trolley from early Victorian times.

Soldiers were billeted at the VC during WWI; Lord Wantage’s paintings were removed from the gallery and stored away dur-

ing WWII when it was converted into a kitchen for local schools. The Victoria Cross Gallery was sold for development in 1974 and is now home to shops and offices, with the part that was once the fire station now The Baker’s Oven.

Originally a Witney company, the Wantage branch was opened in 1902 and managed by Thomas R Badger. He later went on to buy the business and rename it “Badger’s”. This building was erected in 1908 after the original shop collapsed whilst undergoing alterations.

13

The Valentine & Burrell building was pulled down in 1976 to make way for the new Waitrose and Central News (later WH Smith) development, as well as Boots. Badger’s maintains a presence in town though, with Badger’s Menswear in the Market Place owned by Thomas Badger’s

The original trams were horse-drawn but steam powered trams were soon introduced and continued to run on the line until it closed in 1945. Passengers using the tramway bought their tickets from the tramway office, which was located on Mill Street; people walked through the office and out to the platform at the back. The office operated until 1925, when the passenger operation side closed following the introduction of GWR omnibuses. Vale and Downland Museum The Vale and Downland Museum Centre officially opened in 1983 and now holds over 3,000 objects that illustrate the history of the area. Featuring everything from fossils to Formula 1, the museum aims to make connections between the distant past and the present. The Vale & Downland is one of the most popular museums in the area, attracting around 53,000 visitors a year from the local area and further afield. As well as the artefacts, the museum has a range of multimedia exhibits; two galleries where local artists display their work; an excellent café serving snacks to three course lunches; a shop selling local history books and souvenirs; and regular special events including talks, exhibitions and family friendly days. The museum and cafeteria can be hired for social events such as birthdays, club meetings etc. The museum building itself is of historical interest. The main entrance, Squires Room, Downland Kitchen and offices are in a Grade 2 listed, converted 17th century cloth-merchant's house which was a doctor’s surgery prior to becoming the museum. The galleries behind are housed in mainly 20th century-built extensions but include the 18th century Hunt's Barn. The stores, workshop, kitchen and library are in an adjoining building, known as Legge's Cottage.

Parish Church Dedicated to St Peter and St Paul, Wantage Parish Church is the oldest surviving building in town, with parts dating back to the 13th century. Built of Bath stone in a cruciform design, most of the church dates from the 14th and 15th century, though William Butterfield refurbished and renovated it in Victorian times and further renovation took place in the 1990s. Iron railings once surrounded the churchyard but these were removed and used to aid the war effort during WWII. The bell tower holds nine bells, of which eight are rung as a peal; it is on these bells that the clock and carillon plays 'Angel Song' every three hours. The ninth bell is the smallest; it was cast in 1609 and is a Sanctus bell, used to ring the Angelus daily. The largest bell weighs over 21cwt! As well as holding services throughout the week, the church often provides an atmospheric setting for concerts by Wantage Orchestra, Choir and Silver Band.

Wantage Almshouses Almshouses were first established in 10th century Britain, providing a place of residence for the old, sick or distressed. They seem like a thing of the past now we have the welfare state, so it will probably surprise you that there are still thousands of almshouses all over the country, housing over 35,000 people, mainly the elderly. Wantage has three sets of almshouses and they are all important historic, Grade 2 listed buildings. The Mill Street Almshouses (top) were built between 1868 and 1871 and are a terrace of eight units, forming a community in the heart of town. Another ten almshouses were built in Eagles Close in 1867 (middle), forming a pretty terrace. The original water pump is still on view in the gardens. However, probably the oldest almshouses in Wantage are the Robert Stiles Almshouses in Stiles Court, (bottom) first mentioned in the Governors’ Returns of 1796. Located just off busy Newbury Street but hidden behind a wall, the two sets of four single-storey houses are grouped around a courtyard. Of particular interest are the sheep's knuckles inlaid into the pathways! TR TR

King Alfred Statue King Alfred has stood in the market place since 1877, commissioned to celebrate 1,000 years since Alfred the Great’s birth in Wantage. The statue was donated to the town by Col. Robert Loyd-Lindsay - later Lord Wantage - who bought an eight foot piece of Sicilian marble and instructed Count Gleichen - Queen Victoria’s nephew - to sculpt the block in the king’s image. Mounted on a lump of Cornish granite, the installation of the statue meant that the ugly Market House, which stood in the centre of the Market Place, had to be removed. To replace it, Loyd-Lindsay paid for a new Town Hall to be built on the corner of Mill Street and this building still stands today and is home to HSBC Bank. The unveiling of the statue on 14th July 1877 was attended by Their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales, who arrived at Wantage Road station from London Paddington in a special saloon train. Crowds lined the streets and, waving flags and banners, watched the royals proceed to the market place by horse-drawn carriage. The statue shows King Alfred holding a battle-axe in one hand and a roll of parchment in the other, signifying his two roles as warrior and lawgiver; on his head he wears a close fitting helmet with the Saxon emblem of royalty; and by his side hangs a sword. Nobody knows what King Alfred actually looked like, and it is rumoured that his face is a resemblance of Loyd-Lindsay! AF

Wessex Flour Mill Located (obviously enough) on Mill Street, Wantage is host to a well known, busy mill which produces flour from wheat grown locally and delivers it to farm shops, craft bakers and independent food stores all over the country. What you may not know is that there has been a mill on Mill Street since Domesday times. Up till the late 19th century the mill was water-driven by Letcombe Brook. The flour was stone-ground and delivered to customers via the Wantage Tramway, which ran from the mill to Wantage Road mainline station, near Grove. The existing mill was originally owned by Mr Clark, who lived locally, but it was purchased shortly after WWII by the Munsey family, whose own mill had been destroyed by fire. In 1960 the family opted to change from water and steam power to electricity but this meant that the mill had to be moved into the adjacent building, which was built in 1922 and used for storage. The “Old Mill”, which stands over Letcombe Brook, has since been converted into apartments. Now known as Wessex Flour Mill and run by 4th generation miller Paul Munsey, the mill is only one of two independent mills to have survived in Oxfordshire. TR

Lains Barn Lains Barn, just outside Wantage, was originally used to store corn, with wagons entering through the large doors to leave their freshly harvested load. Sheaves of corn were stored at either end of the barn and later, during the winter, threshed with flails in front of the open doors, allowing the fresh air to separate the grain from the straw. The Victorian era saw the invention of the mechanical corn thresher so the barn was extend with an L-shaped cow byre and used to shelter animals. By 1970, though, farming methods had moved on and the barn was redundant. Planning permission to convert it to residential use was turned down and it was threatened with demolition. Fortunately, the Vale and Downland Museum Trust acquired the property in 1977 and restored it for the community. Dr Dick Squires was behind the restoration and his plans were basic but flexible, leaving the majestic spaces intact. Over the years Lains Barn has been used for a wide range of functions, including conferences, wedding receptions, barbecues, music nights, ceilidhs and banquets. It’s also an approved venue for civil marriage ceremonies. Lains Barn offers a competitively priced venue in a unique rural setting. It’s also a great example how the preservation of our agricultural heritage can be enjoyed by generations to come.

FOCUS ON ANGEL WILKINS

Angel Wilkins - a new law firm for Wantage Amanda Wilkins and Neil Angel are proud to announce that they have opened the doors of Angel Wilkins LLP at the former public house and listed building, The Woolpack in Church Street. Neil and Amanda previously worked for the same company, albeit in different offices, and have found that their pro-active approach to conveyancing and their focus on client care has given them a loyal and long-standing client-base. Nevertheless, Neil commented that “it has been a very scary decision to open a new law firm, particularly with the way the economy has been recently, but people are still moving and re-mortgaging. If we can provide an excellent service alongside competitive fees, we are confident that we can make the law firm a success. We both talked for a long time about opening a firm but we never really moved forward with it until the end of last year when we were both so busy that it made sense to go out on our own. Having looked around Wantage and the surrounding areas for commercial premises, we were lucky enough to find The Woolpack which suits us perfectly in terms of both size and location and leaves us room to hopefully grow the firm in the future.” Both Neil and Amanda worked evenings and weekends to get the office set up in the six weeks before the anticipated opening date, with Neil taking a well earned vacation for the first time in years before the office opened! (It was rumoured to be an early milestone birthday celebration ...) Neil and Amanda have been overwhelmed by the support of clients, agents and the local business community which seems to have re-enforced their belief in the firm, and both are looking forward to becoming an established part of the Wantage community. Amanda and Neil can be contacted on: amanda@angelwilkins.co.uk or neil@angelwilkins.co.uk or on 01235 775100.

Ardington House Ardington House was built in 1719 for Edward Clarke by the Strong family, renowned Oxford stone masons, but is better known as the home of the Baring family, founders of the famous merchant bank. However, this charming Georgian building is also open for visitors on certain dates and holds a wealth of interesting objects, paintings and architecture. The house, built with typical Georgian symmetry, has many interesting features, including a dining room said by John Betjeman to be "the nicest dining room in Oxfordshire". Perhaps the most prominent feature is an “imperial staircase” which rises in two flights on either side of the south door, returns to a single flight to the upper landing and is fitted with twisted oak balusters, topped with fanciful acorn carvings.

AP

Visitors to the house can see pictures of past scions of the family, some of whom have been cabinet ministers, Lords, famous bankers and members of the clergy, as well as portraits of Francis Baring, the founder of Barings Bank. The house is furnished with period furniture throughout, though much of the original Georgian panelling was replaced in the Victorian age. The grounds of Ardington lead from a terrace down across water meadows, eventually ending at Lockinge Brook.

White Horse Hill & The Ridgeway

Betjeman Millennium Park

N

The White Horse's origins go back 3,000 years to the late Bronze Age. The stylised form of the White Horse has long been a subject of discussion but what it really signifies remains a mystery. Written records of the Horse date back to the 12th century but do not give proof of the Horse's age or why it was there. It might have religious connections to ancient gods or possibly be some sort of territorial marker. Archaeological investigations in the 1990s proved that that the Horse we see today is in exactly the same place and roughly the same shape as it was when first made. The White Horse survives through the tradition of “scouring” which takes place every seven years, when new chalk is hammered into the shape. Dragon Hill, a flat-topped chalk mound just below the White Horse, is claimed to be the place where St. George, the patron Saint of England, slew the dragon to save the King's daughter from being sacrificed. The dragon’s blood poisoned the earth, marking the ground with a white scar where nothing will grow even now. Whatever the legends,White Horse Hill offers outstanding views across many counties and is popular all year round with dog walkers, hikers and kite flyers. Especially popular with walkers is The Ridgeway, which runs 138 kilometres along the top of the chalk downs and is a remnant of one of the earliest prehistoric tracks in Europe. Today The Ridgeway National Trail runs from Overton Hill, close to Avebury, through Oxfordshire to Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire.

AN

Visitors to the Betjeman Millennium Park, located next to Letcombe Brook, behind the mill, enjoy walking through the wild flowers and admiring the sculptures but may not know the “David and Goliath” story behind the park’s existence. Up until the 1960s the land was an orchard owned by the Wheeler family, who built much of the housing in Wantage. Bill Wheeler wanted the land to become a park at some stage but when he died it was sold to a developer who put in plans for housing. Horrified at the loss of a valuable green space in the town, people campaigned against it and despite the property developer having a high-flying barrister backing his application, it was turned down, and plans for a park approved in principle. A trust was formed and, with the help of funding from the district council and an anonymous benefactor, the land was bought and work began on the park, which opened in 2000. But why the Betjeman Millennium Park? Well, some conservation-conscious locals wanted to celebrate both the millennium and the life of John Betjeman. As one-time Poet Laureate, John Betjeman is of course intrinsically linked with Wantage – he lived here between 1951 and 1972 and his home The Mead overlooked the old orchard. It is also said that he walked along the brook to church every Sunday, collecting the chip papers discarded by Saturday night revellers! To honour Betjeman, sculptor Alec Peever was commissioned to create six poetry plaques featuring John Betjeman’s work, which are located informally around the park. The park is a community affair: owned by resident Trustees, funded by local organisations and tended by volunteers. It also plays a key part in Wantage’s annual Summer Festival, when art workshops, music, drama and poetry - of course – take place in the Sarsen stone circle. The park is currently the focus of a three year educational project being funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and well-wishers. It includes the design of three large educational exhibits to be installed later this year for the benefit of both local schools and interest groups. The exhibits cover three themes: the life and work of John Betjeman; “Mother Nature” as reflected in his writings and features of the park; and “A Sense of Place”, covering his conservation campaigns both in Wantage and nationally. A website and an annual performance by the drama students at King Alfred’s Specialist Sports College are also included in the project: watch this space!

Just off the Ridgeway you will find Wayland’s Smithy a prehistoric tomb estimated to be about 5,000 years old. Its present day name came around 2,000 years ago when the Saxons wove an ancient Norse legend around the tomb. The tale tells how Wayland, the son of a giant, was taught magical smithying skills by the trolls. King Niduth of Sweden crippled Wayland and held him prisoner, forcing him to forge fabulous metalwork for him. When King Niduth's two sons came to Wayland requesting swords, he took his revenge by murdering them, turning their skulls into gifts for King Niduth - a beautiful goblet and matching bowl. The story says that Niduth unwittingly feasted from his dead sons' heads. At a later stage the King's daughter came to Wayland with a ring to be mended. Wayland ravished her, then made his escape on fantastic metal wings which he had forged.

FOCUS ON THE BLOWING STONE

Classic food from an award-winning chef at The Blowing Stone Set on the edge of the Berkshire Downs, in the pretty village of Kingston Lisle, you’re in for a treat if you stumble across The Blowing Stone. Under new management since last August, the pub specialises in real ales and serves up a great menu of high quality, locally sourced food. Angus and Stephanie Tucker previously managed the White Horse in nearby Woolstone, and have now joined forces with award-winning chef Robbie Ellis to bring their unique menu of home cooked classics to The Blowing Stone. The pub has become the favourite haunt of the local horseracing community; pop in for a pint and you’re likely to see champion trainers and jockeys dining there! Real ale drinkers won’t be disappointed with the selection of beers on offer, either. However, food is the real attraction of The Blowing Stone. The lunch and dinner menus range from simple homemade soups and salads to steaks, pies, curries, risottos and fish, and the desserts are irresistible too. Those looking for a lighter bite for lunch might fancy a filled baguette and cup of soup, or the antipasti. On Sundays there are always three roasts - beef, pork and lamb - at lunchtime, as well as a variety of other dishes including pasta and fish. The menu changes regularly and the food is sourced from local suppliers wherever possible and is all cooked on the premises - everything from the horseradish sauce upwards is made from scratch, from fresh ingredients. The food is all reasonably priced but on the second Tuesday of the month there’s a special £10 dinner offer which definitely gives great value for money. Although The Blowing Stone is a traditional village pub, it’s no “ye olde inn” as it has a light and airy, contemporary feel about it. As well as the bar and dining areas there’s a large sunny conservatory which caters for up to 60 people and can be booked for wedding receptions or special occasions. The Blowing Stone holds regular events, such as wine tasting and special occasion lunches, and is family- and dog-friendly. There is also a large, attractive garden, perfect for evening drinks or a leisurely summer Sunday lunch.

FOCUS ON THE LAMB INN

The Lamb Inn - the oldest pub in town! In a part of the world where every village seems full of thatched cottages, it may have struck you as slightly odd that The Lamb Inn, on Mill Street, is the only thatched building in Wantage. (Actually that’s not quite true: there is one other, but it’s a new build house so doesn’t count!) The story goes that, following the Great Fire of London in 1666, Wantage town council banned all thatches and demanded that roofs be replaced with slate, to prevent a similar disaster happening here. However, at that time the border of Wantage ended where Letcombe Brook cuts across Mill Street, putting The Lamb on the other side of the border in a village called Littleworth - so its thatch survived. After the Parish Church, The Lamb is probably the oldest building in Wantage and has been a pub since 1650. Amazingly, it’s never been sold on the open market, and in the last 50 years it’s only had two landlords! Andy Chalmers took on the job 17 years ago and the pub is now mainly managed by Andy’s son Lee, with other family members involved too. Those visiting The Lamb for the first time will probably be surprised when they walk through the door - for the thatched exterior, with its beams and warped walls, hides the fact that the pub is enormous. The central part is open plan; the glass ceiling makes it light and airy, while smaller, more intimate spaces lead off it and are lit with candles at night. The pub can cater for up to 150 diners inside, with seating for another 150 in the garden. Dogs and families are welcome and there is a play park to keep younger visitors amused. There’s also wheelchair access throughout and disabled facilities described as “the best in town”! The Lamb staff serve up a thousand meals a week, every week, and they specialise in providing traditional pub grub, all cooked on the premises using fresh ingredients that are locally sourced wherever possible. As well as a regular menu featuring a wide range of dishes, including steaks, pasta, fish, curries and jacket potatoes, there are daily specials written up on boards around the pub. There’s also a monthly special, where one of the most popular meals on the menu is available for just £4.99, and on Sundays there’s always a choice of roast beef, lamb or chicken. Tea and coffee is available all day, every day, and the pub is also a draw for real ale drinkers as well as foodies, as they are the only one in Wantage to serve London Pride, as well as a range of other draught beers. There’s also a regular jazz event on the last Wednesday of the month. Group bookings are welcome, whether it’s for formal events or special occasions. One regular customer is Wantage Business Breakfast Club, which often hold its breakfast meetings there, as well as an annual Xmas lunch. The Lamb have a range of buffet options available to suit every pocket and occasion, so next time you’re looking for a venue, whether it’s for a small wedding reception, funeral wake, business lunch or birthday party, give them a call.

Stockham Primary School

Custom built to meet the needs of 21st century children, our school welcomed its first pupils in September 2003. Generously supported by a hard-working parent fundraising team our dedicated staff offer our children every opportunity to achieve their full potential both in the classroom and through a wide range of extra-curricular activities.

Stockham School caters for approximately 200 children aged from 4 to 11 years, most of whom live in west Wantage. The school was built in 1971 but has now been totally refurbished providing an excellent teaching environment for the children and adults who work here.

Educational visits covering a wide range of activities are arranged to extend and inspire the children with their studies. There are many day trips off site and in year 6 the children are involved in a week long residential visit. We also host many visitors brought in to provide an exciting stimulus to the work covered in class. The staff and other adults strive constantly to provide rich, rewarding experiences that the children will remember for years to come. A strong home/school partnership is also promoted by parents helping out Newbury Street, Wantage, OX12 8DJ in and on school trips. Pupil age range: 3 - 11

Our last Ofsted report found that teaching, care of children and behaviour was consistently of a high standard. “Pupils’ very good attitudes together with the very positive relationships between pupils themselves and with staff ensure that they are able to learn in a secure and supportive atmosphere.” There are 7 classes in the school, a foundation class, two infant classes, two lower junior and two upper junior classes. The staff are responsible for the full curriculum for their class but also enjoy cooperative teaching and sharing of expertise. This encourages a cooperative style of working which gives the children contact with a wider range of adults, nurturing the family feel of the school. We feel that this strongly contributes to the caring ethos of the school.

SCHOOLS, COLLEGES AND NURSERIES

King Alfred’s: A Specialist Sports College

King Alfred’s can trace its origins to the sixteenth century and has a long and distinguished tradition of educating young people in this locality. The first Foundation School in Oxfordshire, it is fully comprehensive, with approximately 1750 students aged 11–19 based on its three sites in the town, including a thriving Sixth Form. King Alfred’s aim is to build upon its tradition to provide the finest possible education for the young men and women of tomorrow and to see its students become successful, active and productive adults in our rapidly changing world. As a Specialist Sports College, King Alfred’s is placed at the cutting edge of educational developments. In 2007, OFSTED judged King Alfred’s to be a “good school with outstanding features” because of the quality and flexibility of its curriculum offer, including a varied after-school elective programme. A further subject based OFSTED inspection in 2009 judged King Alfred’s Physical Education “outstanding” in every category and Citizenship “good with outstanding features”. Key Stage 3 is completed in two years, allowing all students to begin their GCSE and other courses in Year 9. In this system, students in Year 11 can start A levels early, begin new GCSE subjects or vocational courses and work experience. With its three site structure, the College is able to cater specifically for Years 7 and 8 on its East Site, and Years 9 and 10 on its West Site. Years 11,12 and 13 are based on its central (Centre) site. A “House” system provides continuity for students across the three sites. King Alfred’s results have improved every year for the past eight years to the point where 85% of its students achieved 5 A*-C GCSE grades in 2009. Based on a range of indicators, King Alfred’s performance at both Key Stage 4 and 5 place it in the top two state schools for GCSE and A Level in Oxfordshire. The Sixth Form offers a wide range of academic and vocational courses, and King Alfred’s value added is better than many prestigious independent schools. In 2009, 57% of A Level grades were either A or B and the College has an excellent track record of securing Oxbridge places, medicine and veterinary training. As a designated Training School, King Alfred’s is able to provide all staff charged with the education of its students with the finest on-going professional development. The College has strong links with Oxford University and Oxford Brookes University. If you would like to know more about King Alfred’s or would like a place for your child, please get in touch with the College direct. Visitors are welcome at any time.

FOCUS ON WCS

“This is the best kept secret in Wantage This comment was the surprised response to learning about the existence of Wantage Counselling Service (WCS). In part, it is a great accolade and testament to our professional discretion. However, it also points to the fact that we could be more widely known so we take this opportunity to tell you three little known facts about us. Little Known Fact Number 1 During this last year we have been celebrating 25 years of being a service within the local community. As a registered Charity (298739) and now a BACP Accredited Service, we have been of help to hundreds of people. Our premises are in Orchard House, Portway, Wantage. We are a not-for-profit organisation and the charges we make for counselling cover our running costs. Little Known Fact Number 2 WCS provides counselling education and training.

Firstly, we help those whose occupation involves working with peo-

ple. The Introductory and Certificate courses help you to improve your ability to listen to and be of help to clients or colleagues. Secondly, we offer The Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling, an intensive four-year training that equips people to become accredited counsellors. Becoming a counsellor is an exciting and demanding process that requires that you learn about yourself in order to be helpful to others. Little Known Fact Number 3 Counselling is not advice giving. Consulting a counsellor involves a willingness to reveal oneself and take an emotional and financial risk in order to achieve a deeper self-understanding and a better quality of life. Taking such a decision is in itself a sign of hope and health. It is important to know that our counsellors have all taken similar risks in order to be of help to you in your undertaking. WCS is proud to have been serving the community for over 25 years and is committed to providing a high quality service for the years to come. Let WCS keep the secrets but do not let WCS continue to be the best-kept secret in Wantage. If you would like to know more about the services which we offer, or are interested in supporting our work as a Friend of WCS or as a Trustee, please contact us by telephone 01235 769 744, e-mail wantagecounselling@tiscali.co.uk or visit our website www.wantagecounselling.org.uk.

30 FOCUS ON BEST MATES BREWERY

Best Mates Brewery - for a unique, rural tasting beer Amid the picturesque countryside and rolling farmland in Ardington, just outside Wantage, you may detect another scent in the air - the smell of hops coming from Best Mates Brewery. Owner Darren Weal has been brewing real ale in the village for two and a half years and now has six beers on offer, ranging from the spicy, golden “Alfie” to the hoppy rich taste of “Scutchamers Knob”. Best Mates Brewery is a 5 barrel plant, capable of producing 32 casks of beer per week. All the ales are traditionally brewed using water from the borehole at Lockinge Estate, which gives Best Mates’ beers a unique rural taste. The beers are all either cask or bottle conditioned, and firkins (kegs holding 72 pints) of the beer are delivered to pubs and inns as far away as Cheltenham and the Isle of Wight, as well as closer to home - The Boar’s Head in Ardington was Best Mates’ first customer. Another local stockist is Smith’s Bistro, who sell the bottled variety, and bottles are also available at Milletts farm shop, Burford Garden Centre and Q Gardens, amongst other places. Recently Darren has introduced two new beers to the range: Ardington Ale is a dark winter beer, great for warming up the soul on those chilly nights; Midsummer Madness is a lighter beer perfect for cooling you down on sizzling summer days. If you’re having a party, barbecue, wedding reception or other event and want to keep the real ale drinkers happy then Darren can help. He can supply anything from a couple of bottles up to several crates or, if you prefer, you could order by the barrel - Darren supplies his beers in 10 and 20 litre polipins or, for larger events, in a 9 gallon firkin with all the equipment you need to pour pints with style. Darren is keen to show people around his brewery and offers a variety of tours for parties of between 10 and 50 people. The basic tour - great value at £6 a head - includes a 30 minute tour of the brewery, a Q&A session and two pints of Best Mates ales; the standard tour is £10 and includes more beer and time to enjoy a picnic lunch (bring your own) and a pint on a hay bale! For the braver (or more foolish?!) amongst you is the “Drink as much as you like” tour ... £15 gets you the tour, the Q&As and a whole barrel of beer to wash your picnic lunch down with - plus as many bottles as you can drink. Finally, the “Posh” tour, starting at £25 a head, begins with the trip round the brewery and a couple of pints and ends at The Boar’s Head for lunch. It could well be the perfect day out for a stag or hen party or for an alternative corporate event or birthday party! For more details about the tours or how to purchase any of the Best Mates Brewery Beers, simply give Darren a call, drop him an email or, better still, pop in and say hello!

32 FOCUS ON WANTAGE

Focus on Wantage ... What’s it all about? Focus on is a brand developed under the title of a Community Interest Company. It was established by Faringdon Chamber of Commerce to create, develop and manage activities, events and projects and to promote the Market Towns, initially within the Vale of the White Horse in Oxfordshire, as a tourist and visitor destination. In order to achieve these aims we produce town guides such as this and we have developed a website www.focusonUK.co.uk to promote the businesses and events in the Vale of White Horse. We have been producing town guides for over two years now and this new guide for Wantage has been produced on behalf of the Want age Chamber of Commerce, who wish to promote the town to visitors. We have worked closely with the Wantage community to develop this guide. We are keen to ensure that we include up to date and relevant information and we would like to thank Wantage.com, members of the Chamber of Commerce and Wantage & District Breakfast Club for the information that they have provided and the support that they have given in the development of the 2010 Focus on Wantage Guide. Focus on Faringdon CIC is able to provide a package that includes advertising in just one, or all, of our range of guides. The Focus on Faringdon website has an extensive Business Directory; basic entries are free of charge while extra information can be added for a small charge. Banner advertising is available and can be added to one or more pages of your choice. The Event Diary is updated frequently and includes family, community, sport and business events as well as information about exhibitions and festivals. What is A Community Interest Company? Community Interest Companies (CICs) are limited companies with the following special features: • they must trade in the interest of the community they were set up to benefit; • they have a statutory asset lock - this means that profit distribution is restricted and on winding up assets cannot be divided among the members; • they are regulated by a Regulator who oversees the activities of CICs. CIC's are a comparatively new legal form for social enterprises i.e. enterprises wishing to trade and use the profits/assets for the benefit of the community. They can have shares or guarantors. A share structure allows for investment by those wishing to use their money to fund services of benefit to the community. More information about Focus on Faringdon can be found on our website www.focusonfaringdon.co.uk .To request help with events and projects, or to become an investor please phone 01367 241162 or email focuson@bordengate.com

Wantage & District Business Breakfast Club The Wantage & District Business Breakfast Club offers an opportunity for local business people to get together to promote their business, find new clients and suppliers, increase their network of connections and have an enjoyable time in the process. This successful Business Breakfast Club was established in February 2001 and recently celebrated its 100th breakfast meeting at the RBS Williams Conference Centre. The club meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 8am, usually at The Lamb Inn, Wantage, but occasionally at other venues such as Lains Barn. The club is run by founder members, Reg Waite of WWBS and retired banker, Colin Wilkins. As well as offering networking opportunities, at each meeting there is a presentation from a guest speaker. Previous speakers have included local MP Ed Vaizey, Radio Oxford’s Bill Heine, television and radio presenter Wesley Smith, Neil Townsend, the Pastor of Wantage Community Churches, and Patrick O'Leary, the Wantage Town Mayor and owner of Dolphin Art. The club also has an annual awards ceremony when members vote for local businesses who have made significant contributions either to the Breakfast Club or to the community of Wantage. Wantage Town Council The Town Council is made up of a number of Town Councillors, headed by the Town Mayor (currently Councillor Patrick O’Leary*) and supported by the Town Clerk and staff. Full details can be found on the Council website. The VWHDC is one of five District Councils in Oxfordshire.
