After the summer holidays and feeling refreshed and raring to go, 25 local businesses attended the event eager to do business and exchange referrals over coffee and breakfast. Paul Brame (Chairman) was away at the Paralympics so Mary Thomas (Concise Training) stood in and did a sterling job. Neil O'Regan from Shawcity kicked off the 60 second introductions by showing a Gas Detector used by the Fire Service. Other businesses present included a thriller writer/publisher, surveyors, accountants and coaches amongst others. Mary Thomas announced that September's meeting was the 4th anniversary of her attending FBBC and as Paul (the resident poet) was away members were treated to a short piece of poetry from Lawrence Harrison (TaxAssist). The speaker was Stuart Roper of Milagro Designs and he posed the question”Why use an Illustrator?" Stuart highlighted how illustrations can be used with great effect on various types of advertising, children's books, websites and even murals on the front of empty shop premises. FBBC is an informal Business Networking Club which has been attended by in excess of 250 members. It meets at 7.30 a.m. on the first working Monday of each month at the Sudbury House Hotel. There is no membership fee and no limitations on which businesses can attend. More information can be found on the Club's website: www.fbbc-networking.co.uk

Faringdon. The Chamber held on open meeting on the 4th September and was delighted with the number of people who came along and would like to thank everyone for their ideas. Chamber President, Paul Brame said “It was reassuring to me that there remain so many lively and mainly constructive opinions in this town and whilst this is the case we stand a chance of getting things changed for the better. Opportunities like this project only come up once in a while and I am pleased that we are able to contribute to this process”. The ideas that came from the meeting included; setting up a “Town Team” that would bring together many of the local groups that could work on the development of a marketing strategy for the town; helping the Pink Pigeon Trust with the purchase of their “Berners Banners”; Floral decoration and better signage throughout the town. The ideas have now been sent to the Vale of White Horse District Council for consideration. Their response is awaited with interest! There will be a another chance for you to have your say about the Faringdon Town Council’s new Neighbourhood Plan on Tuesday 2nd October in the Corn Exchange. The meeting starts at 7pm and for more information visit the website at www.faringdonplan.webs.com

I suspect that like many people, including myself, your first introduction to whisky was a blended whisky i.e. a mix of malt and grain whiskies. This is no great surprise when you consider that the original reason blends were created was to make the often fiery and unpalatable whisky of olden days softer, smoother and more consistent. Nowadays blends account for the vast majority of whisky sold worldwide so how come once we discover single malts we tend to ignore blends? Here at Arkwrights we strongly feel that blended whisky should not be considered the poor relation of the whisky world. Blending is an art that requires an excellent nose (Richard Paterson of Whyte & Mackay has his insured for £1.5 million…) and the skill of knowing exactly what whiskies are required to give a blend it’s character and consistency. As one blender put it ‘It’s like an orchestra, with some instruments being more dominant than others but if there was one element missing it would not be as harmonious’. More than 90% of whisky produced goes into blends, including big names such as Macallan, Highland Park etc. Additionally, the only reason some distilleries still exist today is that their whisky has some unique characteristic that is in demand by the blenders. So, all in all, blends contribute hugely to keeping single malts viable as well as being extremely enjoyable in their own right.

Come and have a walk around our garden displays to get ideas and inspiration We have handcrafted paving produced on site and also sandstone, travertine & limestone from all around the world

For everyday drinking you can’t go far wrong with the Big T, a quality blend that comprises 30% malt whisky and 70% grain excellent value at only £13.49! If you want to move up a notch then try blends that have a higher ratio of malt, such as the (far too) drinkable Great King Street Blend which is 50/50. The next step up is blends where the whiskies have a minimum age – starting with something like the smooth and light Antiquary 12 year old and moving up through the excellent Whyte & Mackay 22 year old before (money allowing!) experiencing perhaps one of the best whiskies Ken or I have ever tasted, the Whyte & Mackay 40 year old.

Antique Vintage & Reclaimed Furniture & Homewares

Main Street, Clanfield, Nr Bampton 01367 810485

The highly acclaimed period drama series ‘Downton Abbey’ is set in a fictional Yorkshire country house and follows the lives of the aristocratic ‘Crawley Family’ and their servants. Like me’ some of you may be surprised to hear, that although set in Yorkshire, the exterior scenes are filmed in Bampton? Located in the market square of this picturesque village is the lovely new restaurant Biztro. Owner, Biz Gooddy, (hence the name) converted the ground floor of her established Bed and Breakfast business into a country style restaurant that oozes character and rustic charm. The cosy dining room seats 24, tables are perfectly positioned, providing a relaxed and spacious ambience that feels just right. Cuisine on offer is French/British, with the emphasis on fresh, honest, locally produced food at an affordable price. We chose starters of – Home-made French onion soup King Prawns, pan fried in garlic and parsley butter, served on salad leaves. Presentation for both dishes was superb and tasted delicious; the soup in particular, was one of the best I have tried. For mains we opted for – Freshly caught salmon fillet, served on a bed of creamy mashed potato with watercress, peas and chorizo - Oxfordshire rump steak with Madeira sauce, salad and home-made chips. The steak was cooked perfectly, the salmon tasted extremely good, both ate as well as they looked. We arrived fairly early and by the time we had finished our two courses, the restaurant started to fill up, this only added to atmosphere which we enjoyed very much. Quite full at this point, we selected to share (well you have to don’t you!) Crème brulee and home-made vanilla ice cream in a brandy snap basket, which looked like a photograph from glossy magazine, lovely.. For all you dessert lovers out there, we noticed a couple at the table opposite delving into – Duo of chocolate fondant and gnache, served with chocolate ice cream Autumn berry pavlova, judging by their grins and giggles, this is one to add to your list- It looked amazing! The evening was extremely enjoyable, a great little restaurant with excellent food and service. The Biztro really is the BIZ!!

Birdie Tales

(Prunella modularis) The plain and rather drab looking Dunnock is more commonly known as the Hedge Sparrow, they may appear quite Sparrow- like, but on closer inspection its slim build and fine pointed bill prove that this quiet little bird is in fact not a Sparrow at all. Surprisingly, they are part of the accentor bird family, with its closest relative being the much larger Thrush. They tend to go unnoticed in the garden as they are mainly ground feeders, feeding on insects from leaf litter and undergrowth. During autumn and winter months they will eat berries and seeds and even venture on to the bird table, constantly flicking their wings in an agitated manner. The sex life of the Dunnock is an extremely complicated one, during the breeding season, males will mate with up to 3 females at a time, females have been known to take on 4 or 5 partners in one go. Each nest is built by the female, normally in shrubs and hedges, clutches of 4-5 eggs are produced 2 or 3 times per year. Once the eggs hatch the female’s promiscuous lifestyle is then rewarded by all of her partners bringing food to her young. As for the males, well I guess they just like it! There was a serious decline in the Dunnock population during the 1980’s and although their numbers are now increasing, they have another problem to deal with. The Cuckoo is a species renowned for laying eggs in the nests of other birds and unfortunately for the Dunnock, they are the number one host for the Cuckoo. A female Cuckoo, visiting the nest of the Dunnock, will remove one of the Dunnock’s eggs before laying one of her own directly into the nest. Despite the egg being different in size and colour, the Dunnock will continue incubation, until the Cuckoo egg hatches. The Cuckoo chick will then go about removing any Dunnock eggs or young from the nest, securing all the attention of its adopted parents. Perhaps the Dunnock is more interesting than we think?

! g n i n n u R n o i t u l o v Re Revolution Running Shop was launched in September 2012 at tfd Health and Fitness, Wantage. In store we specialise in the fitment of running shoes using the up-to-the-minute gait analysis technology. You can be sure of the service as all are staff are either medically or biomechanically trained. We have the knowledge and experience to not only fit you with the correct shoes but also aid you in becoming a more efficient runner. The shop is owned by graduate sports therapist Adam Dobson, who also owns Revolution Sports Injuries Clinic which is based at tfd Health and Fitness. When asked about the launch Adam said “I have seen a lot of patients over the last two and half years whose injuries can be traced back to poor footwear when exercising. I have always had to refer people on to other shops and can never be sure that they will purchase the right shoe for them. With this in mind I can now fit the right shoe to each client, this could help him or her get over an injury and also help to reduce any further injury risk. I can do this with the video analysis software, which allows me to look at an athletes gait and break it down to see what the foot as well as the whole lower limb is doing. It is important to remember that everyone is different and this is true with their running styles too which means you can’t pigeon hole people into strict categories. This is why within the shop we specialise in the fitment of running shoes and nothing else. We do also have an online shop with a wide selection of sports clothing, accessories and sports nutritional products. Talk

to th e Ve t!

Wow, another year has passed and we are now heading towards November looking forward to some fantastic firework displays for Diwali and Guy Fawkes night. Sadly, some of our four legged friends are often less enthralled with the idea of bright colours and loud noises flashing above their homes. As their family, we feel desperately helpless and worried about how we can help them overcome their anxiety.

Dogs and cats can very easily become fearful of something. This fear can perpetuate until they are beside themselves with worry. It often starts as quite an innocuous thing. A car backfiring startled them and now any noise that sounds similar to that is something to be afraid off. Unfortunately, our love of our pets often reinforces this behaviour. Our natural instinct is to comfort our dog who was upset by the big scary noise. What we are actually saying to our dog or cat when we do this is that is its OK to be scared of this noise! So the very next time it happens, they think it is OK to be scared because mummy and daddy are going to cuddle me. And of course, that is what we do! So, breaking the fear cycle is the best approach to management of dogs or cats who are scared. This should start when they are young. Early socialisation allows them to be exposed to a variety of objects, noises, people, etc. You can even obtain a CD for your puppy that contains all the most commonly present noises and sounds! Once they have learnt that a car is a normal thing in their environment, they are less likely to be fearful of it. The same goes for loud noises. If we expose a puppy to a loud noise that startles them, but behave as if nothing has happened, they will soon realise that it is not a scary thing, and nothing to worry about. Of course, this is a harder task with the older dog/cat, who has already learnt to be afraid of fireworks. But, there are various tools available to us to help our dogs/cats during this stressful time, and hopefully we will be able to get them over their fear. 1.) As the season of fireworks approaches, you could speak to us about placing a plug-in diffuser pack of a dog pheromone called ADAPTIL or one for cats called FELIWAY. That will relax them (don't worry – it won't affect you!). However to have maximum effect, it needs to be plugged into the home two to three weeks before the fireworks are due to start,so plan and think ahead! 2.) There are also zylkene capsules available – these contain a protein that is present in the bitch's or queen's milk. It has calming properties. The tasteless capsules can be opened up sprinkled on the pet’s food. This treatment should start at least 2 days before the expected scary event. 3.) Once the fireworks have started, you can also do a few things around the house . Keeping your pets indoors is paramount. Closing all the windows and shutting the curtains helps reduce the sounds and lights coming into the home. You could also play some music, or put the TV on, to drown out the external noises. Make a ‘den’ for your pet to hide in. Ideally, get this den ready a couple of days before so they can get used to feeling safe in it. 4.) It is very important that you do not reassure your pet if it is getting very distressed. As we have already said, this simply helps reinforce the fear. It is much better to give your dog a quiet safe place they can be for the evening, and for him/her to stay there. You can be in the room too if that will help keep your pet relaxed. If your pet is relaxed when fireworks are going off, you can praise them for this (correct behaviour), it can reinforce the correct, and relaxed, response to fireworks. We would recommend that your pets are also microchipped. More pets going missing this time of year than any other. They are often frightened and confused if a firework unexpectedly goes off and just ‘run’ getting lost and unable to find their way home! Feel free to contact us here at Danetree Vets for more advice if your pet is distressed during this season so that we can give you the appropriate advice for managing this difficult time.

Healthy Tips

So what prevents us from losing weight? Last month we looked at exercises to burn fat, but even if you think you have done everything right why do some people not lose weight? · Over eating: Eating more calories than we burn off is the obvious one. Excess energy is stored in the body as fat. · Being inactive: When you lose your muscle mass by being inactive, you need less energy (calories) to maintain what is left. It becomes possible to gain weight easily even with a modest calorie intake and nearly impossible to lose weight. · Hormone imbalances: Hormonal imbalance may have a negative impact on the metabolism (the rate at which you burn energy), which could be the cause of weight gain despite a healthy diet and exercise. Hormones usually work with your body and, the more you exercise, the more you benefit from their effect. The more active you are, the more hormones you will release, which will help with weight loss. There are exceptions however, and increases in the levels of some hormones can actually reduce the body’s ability to burn fat. · The hormones that can affect the ability to burn fat are: · Testosterone: Testosterone is known to boost the metabolism and lower fat levels, so a decline in this hormone could be the cause of weight gain in males. If a man became less active, there would be a gradual decline in testosterone. Resistance training may help to reverse this situation. · Oestrogen: Oestrogen increases fat breakdown, elevates your mood and increases your metabolism. A decrease in oestrogen can lead to weight gain and obesity. When women go through the menopause their oestrogen levels naturally decline, and any excess calories are stored in the fat cells, particularly around the abdomen. Growth Hormone: Helps to reduce body fat and regulate blood sugar. Its release is increased the more you exercise. · Raised Insulin levels: Insulin is responsible for pushing nutrients from the food you eat to their respective places in the body and if necessary creating fat. It also inhibits fat loss. When insulin levels are raised we reduce our chances of burning fat. · Cortisol: Cortisol is another hormone that plays an important role in regulating blood sugar, energy production, inflammation, the immune system and healing. Stress and poor sleep patterns elevate cortisol levels, which contributes to the accumulation of abdominal fat. · Weight loss isn’t always just a case of reducing your calorie intake and exercising more, however that’s a good place to start. The team at the Gym at Carswell are here to help you reach your weight loss goal, with support, encouragement and practical advice. · Next Month: What we can do to affect those hormones.

Spotlight on Pinotage REVIEWS

differs from its vitis vinifera (wine grape) collegues in that it was created in South Africa in 1925 by Abraham Perold, Professor of Viticulture at Stellenbosch University. He crossed two vitis varieties, the high yielding, easy ripening cinsault (aka in South Africa as hermitage) and the fickle but elegant pinot noir. The aim to make a new variety that was able to produce grapes that ripened consistently, providing flavours that were reminiscent of the great wines of Burgundy. Typically, the colour of pinotage is a very deep to opaque ruby, with savoury aromas of earthiness and brambles. For me, the flavour profile is focussed on primary fruits; rich, ripe plums, blackberries and mulberries with a subliminal savoury note. Pinotage hovers around 14 % abv mark, and the tannins are often grippy. Problems that have arisen with this grape variety is that it is hard to achieve a lower alcohol content and it is noted that it can sometimes show ‘spiritiness’ that can be described as acetone in flavour. I am pleased to have discovered a good example found locally, so I encourage you to give pinotage a whirl! Lyngrove Collection Pinotage 2010 Stellenbosch, South Africa Dark ruby in appearance, on first approach this wine shows great intensity of rich ripe plums and blackberries with a hint of vanilla spice. The palate delivers what is detected on the nose with more; mulberries, damsons and a hint of star anise and a touch of earthiness. The tannins are grippy, yet well integrated and supported by the primary fruit characters. Rich and flavoursome, a great accompaniment with my beef casserole! Available from Budgens Was £7.37 Now down to £5.75 until 3/10/12

Unusual Insurance Claims: Have you ever been hit by a frozen squirrel while driving? Has a rabid magpie ever flown in your bedroom window, stolen your spectacles and made a break for it, glasses in beak or has a naked pedestrian ever jumped on your car, leapt onto the roof, jumped up and down and then run away, never to be seen or heard from again? So say some insurance policyholders, who have made unusual insurance claims. Animal Events When real disasters occur, insurance provides a vital and necessary lifeline that helps policyholders regain their footing and start life over. But sometimes a freak incidence occurs - and convincing the insurance company that the claim is real becomes rather challenging. Take the gardener who, buying plants at a local nursery, exited the shop just in time to see a passing camel kick and damage his car. It transpires that a local television crew just happened to be in the area filming nearby and caught the camel footage on camera - corroborating the man's story for his insurer. In another case, a man approached his car following a fishing expedition and saw a cow chewing on something long and black. As he came closer, he realized it was his windscreen wiper, which contained salt deposits from a long weekend at the coast. Upon further inspection, it was discovered the cow had licked his vehicle from bumper to bumper, ruining every bit of rubber along the way. "Cows like salt," the man later explained. "They saw the vehicle as a huge salt lick!" Burglars and Home Owners Insurers say they're constantly amazed at some of the bizarre situations for which policyholders file claims, ranging from the serious to the downright outrageous. One burglar robbed a house and, in the process, locked himself in the garage. Because the garage door opener was broken, and the homeowners were away on vacation, he was stuck there for more than a week and forced to survive on the dog food and soda stored inside. When finally released from his prison, the man escaped and then sued the owners for undue mental anguish. He won! A common claim in pubs, hotels and night clubs (as well as at home) is caused by people tripping over their own mess (a spilled drink or a discarded handbag) and then suing the owner of the property for negligence. Don’t forget to clean up after your guests!. Take care when arranging insurance: there are a host of things that you might need to claim for that you have not yet even thought about!
