Deadline for August Issue Fri 20th July

In the reflection of my glasses, you will find the groom all dressed up for his big day. This photo was taken at Oakfield Farm, a wedding venue in South Africa. At this particular point of the day, we were all getting ready to meet and greet the guests that had arrived, and usher them into the wedding hall. We were all having a few pints with our friend to calm his nerves before the serious stuff began, so our photographer took advantage of that and started snapping away. It was a day we wouldn’t forget soon… Grant Guthrie info@teracore.co.za Web / Graphic Designer App Developer :: www.teracore.co.za

Cotswold Cider Company Local cider producer, The Cotswold Cider Company, is honoured to receive a prestigious award at the world’s largest cider competition at The Royal Bath and West Show. The award, for their traditional method ‘Coleshill House Cider’ was judged over 4 classes of cider and perry and was selected by judges for its combined taste and presentational qualities. Rory Souter, Managing Director, is quoted as saying he’s “Jubilee-ant”, “It’s a great honour to be recognised against such high level competition in the heart of the South West’s Cider Land.” The judges included restaurateur Raymond Blanc, to whom Rory hopes the Award may attract Raymond’s interest at Call Trish: 01367 820060 the world renowned Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, close to Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS Rory’s Coleshill home. The Cotswold Cider Company uses their own organic apples Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk together with other bittersweet varieties grown locally to Neighbourhood Plan Meeting ‘craft’ their characterful range of real ciders. On 12th June Faringdon Town Council hosted an open meeting to inform the Townspeople of what the new Neighbourhood Plan is, what it can achieve, its limitations and its benefits for the Town. Faringdon residents have been given an exceptional opportunity to control the future development of their Town. The open meeting gave people the opportunity to have their say in the future of Housing, Education, Employment and Leisure facilities to ensure that the final plan reflects what Faringdon wants. The meeting was very well attended and many people volunteered to join the steering group. Faringdon Chamber of Commerce are supporting the Town Council in the development of the neighbourhood plan through membership of the steering committee.

Faringdon Business Breakfast Club On Monday 11th June, 30 local business people gathered for Faringdon Business Breakfast Club's (FBBC) monthly networking meeting. This month's guest speaker was Sjoerd Vogt who talked of the importance of incorporating sustainability in all businesses as a way of introducing Faringdon's EcoWeek from 16th to 23rd June. Sjoerd spoke passionately of the need for our culture to 'change the rules' and find ways of rewarding sustainability rather than growth and highlighted many examples of local businesses and individuals that had adopted sustainable practices or services. FBBC is an informal Business Networking. It meets at 7.30 a.m. on the first working Monday of each month at the Sudbury House Hotel. There is no membership fee and no limitations on which businesses can attend. More information can be found on the Club's website: www.fbbc-networking.co.uk FBBC's next meeting will be on Monday 2nd July when the guest speaker will be Business Coach Melanie Greene whose presentation is entitled Your Brain At Work: How To Increase Your Performance.

Lets Talk about Whisky It’s surprising how many people think that whisk(e)y from anywhere other than Scotland (and possibly Ireland) will not be enjoyable. This is a pity as there are some fabulous whiskies from all round the world nowadays and to dismiss them all would be to miss out on some real treats. The main thing is not to expect all whiskies to taste the same but instead to enjoy discovering new aromas and new tastes. Japan has a long history of whisky making and although much of the early knowledge came from studying distilling in Scotland, cultural and environmental factors have come to bear over the years. One influence is that Japanese whisky is created to match well with food. Additionally, each distillery usually produces many different whiskies and so a variety of stills and maturation casks are used (including woods unique to Japan, such as Mizunara). The distinctive style of delicate yet complex whisky that results from factors like these is now regularly winning awards globally, and a good place to start any exploration of Japanese whiskies would be Yamazaki 10 year old or, if you like a smoky whisky, Hakushu 12 year old. India is another country that has surprised many people by producing some quality whisky, most notably Amrut. Many a blind tasting has led to red faces for whisky buffs who have been dismissive of Indian whisky only to declare it to be wonderful when they don’t know that is what’s in their glass! It may be American bourbon, with it’s soft, approachable style, that surprises and delights you or the almost cognac style whisky that is produced at Penderyn in Wales. Celebrate this diversity – it is certainly one of the reasons why I love whisky!

DENTAL HEALTH

Ta l k t o the V et

Imagine this: you eat porridge followed by rice pudding all day every day. And you never brush your teeth. What will happen to your teeth? You will have a severe build up of plaque which is a yellow or white deposit consisting of bacteria and food particles which forms around the surface of the tooth. Then it goes hard, yellow or brown and is then called tartar. Tartar starts at the base of the tooth and can cover with time the entire surface. What's the result of this? The first sign is bad breath caused by gum inflammation and infection. This can then lead to abscesses and loosening of teeth. After a long period of being in significant pain due to gingivitis and infection the tooth will eventually fall out. But before that the bacteria and the poisons they produced will have made their way into the blood stream and will have reached your heart, your liver and kidneys and will have caused severe damage there. I hear you say: but that won't happen to me, I brush my teeth twice daily! Very well, but what about your cat or dog? Being fed tinned food for years and not receiving any dental care means for them that what was described above is exactly what happens. Due to lack of proper dental care, 80 % of dogs and 70 % of cats show signs of oral disease by the age of three! Oral disease is now the No. 1 health problem in our pets. Ÿ 1. The single most effective way to keep your pet's teeth clean is - brushing them regularly just like your own. This should be done daily and should be started at a very early age, so Rover and Tabby can get used to it early enough not to feel intimidated by the routine. Although this might sound easy, we understand that with some pets the brushing might really be a daunting task. Don’t worry help is close at hand. Just drop in to see us, have a chat with one of my nurses who will be more than happy to give you some sound advice free of charge. Ÿ 2. If they don't let you brush their teeth, second best option is a dental dry diet, which contains natural fibres that work like a toothbrush and scratch off plaque while they eat. The extra chewing on the dry diet also helps control infection because it stimulates the production of saliva which has natural antibiotic properties. Ÿ 3. There also exist seaweed supplements that helps reduce plaque deposits and prevent infection. Ÿ 4. Try to ensure that, at least once a year, your pet has a check up at your local vets. This is essential to make sure any dental problems are spotted at an early stage. So what can be done if you have already spotted a sign of a problem? An appointment with your vet should be made. They are likely to put your pet on antibiotics to help start fighting the bacteria infecting the gums first. Any loose and severely affected teeth will have to be removed; the rest will be scaled with an ultrasonic de-scaler to remove all the tartar. Then, the teeth will be polished to leave a smooth surface, which will slow down the build up of plaque in the future. All this will be performed under a general anaesthetic. Your pet will then be prescribed another course of antibiotics and painkillers. Afterwards you will find that your cat or dog will be much happier, the bad breath will be gone and they will enjoy their food and life generally much more. Graham Pursey 01367 242777

OP MARKS AGAIN is a local Driving School Top Testablished in 2004 as Top Marks for Driving, then

re-established in 2010 as Top Marks Again. With well over 100 successful pupils, a solid reputation for reliability and a highly constructive and supportive approach to coaching and teaching, Mark Lawson is now looking at ways to incorporate the Internet into the learning experience. Mark’s latest idea has led to a cooperation with the Internet Café on London Street, where Mark is providing the latest software for Theory Test preparation, and will be on-hand at agreed times to assist new learners to increase their chances of passing. Although the majority of pupils are still teenagers, Mark has supported mature learners and also older people who are unsure about a return to driving after – for example- a period of illness. There is a trend, with higher insurance costs being the main impediment, for learners to start their driving later, perhaps during a Gap Year or after University. With fuel costs at all-time highs and no likely reduction coming from the Chancellor, lesson prices are unlikely to fall further than they already have – most instructors having seen a 20% fall in the last two years – so from a financial perspective, putting off taking your test may not be such a good idea. Mark suggests that prospective learners should consider a number of factors when they select their Driving Instructor; Although price is an important one, how comfortable you feel with your instructor is also critical to your performance and therefore cost. With prices having been pushed down and “silly” offers being made, reliability is becoming more important too. If you are paying someone less than the cost of the fuel (Mark covers about 30 miles in an average 1 hour lesson) then their motivation must be in some doubt. There are more stories now than before about pupils who have booked – and paid for – a set of lessons, finding the instructor does not turn up after the first couple of lessons……

Restaurant Review The Prince of Wales 16 High Street, Shrivenham SN6 8AF www.powshrivenham.com Tel: 01793 782268 If you are looking for superb home cooked food, an excellent range of well kept local real ales, great hospitality, all wrapped up in a lovely traditional country pub, look no further than the Prince of Wales in Shrivenham. There are no surprises at the Prince of Wales if you are looking for the perfect pint, having been awarded the Cask Marque, an independent award for serving first quality cask ale. This was obvious to see by the number of regulars (despite the torrential rain outside) drinking and chatting at the bar area. Proprietors Eddie and Marion are excellent hosts, a warm welcome is offered to everyone who enters, be it locals or first timers. I have to say that the range of homemade food on offer was a pleasant surprise though as we looked through the menu and numerous specials boards. We opted for a shared starter of stuffed field mushroom, filled with Mediterranean vegetables, topped with grilled goat’s cheese. John the house chef also served a taster of antipasti, a cold platter of parma ham, salami, olives and prawns, served with a salad garnish. Both dishes looked fantastic and tasted even better! For mains are choices were – very slow braised lamb shank (marinated for four days in red wine) with rosemary and garlic jus - homemade steak burger, topped with salami, pancetta and grilled mature cheddar, served with homemade chips and leaf salad. The lamb was beautifully tender and fell of the bone and the burger was melt in the mouth gorgeous! The dessert menu looked extremely tempting but, we just didn’t have any room left to give it a go. Each table menu has written in the top left corner – “Real food” “Real ales” Real quality. This sums up the Prince of Wales perfectly, a good pub with food on offer to this standard is a real find!

Birdie Tales Bullfinch

(Pyrrhula pyrrhula) When did you last see a Bullfinch? If you are lucky enough to encounter any of these quiet secretive birds, it will probably be in a pair or small family group. The male is striking to look at with bright pink breast, blue-grey back, black bill, wings and bright white rump. The female is more subtly attractive with fawn coloured under parts and brown back; both have black caps and tail. A plump stocky little bird, they are front heavy with a bull-headed appearance, hence the name. The Bullfinch has been in serious decline over recent years, the main reasons are probably hedgerow loss and increasing numbers of Sparrowhawks. For many years it was the enemy of fruit- growers during the spring months as they turned to buds of fruit trees for their main food source. In parts of Britain with orchards it was permitted to cull them under license, this is no longer allowed. Bullfinches can damage fruit trees by feeding on developing buds; they tend to toss away the fleshy parts to get to the seed inside, resulting in most gardeners perceiving them as undesired guests! Being an extremely shy bird, Bullfinches are difficult to tempt to the bird-table or feeder, their first choice is hawthorn and bramble bushes. However’ through patience and persistence we have managed to coax a pair into the back garden, hopefully they will soon be accompanied by their young as mum and dad are busy catching flies and insects for them, this will last for only a couple of weeks before they venture out on their own in search of tastier treats. The stunning almost tropical looking Bullfinch has had a hard time to say the least, once seen everywhere, it’s fast becoming a very rare sight indeed. C. Row

What foods are good for long term weight loss?

·

·

·

·

·

· · · ·

Protein rich foods should be first on your list to consume each day; they are filling and satisfying and help to reduce sugar cravings Meat, poultry, eggs, fish, dairy and some beans and grains all contain protein - for example Lean beef, turkey and chicken, sardines ,salmon, mackerel, natural yoghurt, cottage cheese, soya beans, tofu and oats all contain varying amounts of protein. When choosing carbohydrates we must consider their energy /sugar content and how much fibre, vitamins and minerals we get from them. So those foods low in energy and high in fibre, vitamins and minerals should be top of our eating list. Green leafy vegetables, berries and some grains and pulses can give us what we need when looking for weight loss – for example Spinach, kale, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, leeks, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, quinoa and oats are all healthy options for weight loss. Nuts and seeds contain good fats, protein and carbohydrates and in small portions are great snacks that keep your energy levels up and help prevent cravings – for example Macadamia nuts, pecans, pistachios, sunflower seeds, flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds are great healthy fillers. So what combinations of foods work well for weight loss during a typical day? Healthy breakfast – Yogurt with mixed berries, nuts and seeds Healthy lunch – Chicken breast wrapped in lettuce with mixed pepper and tomato salad Healthy dinner – Grilled salmon with steamed broccoli, spinach and dwarf beans

Why not try to make up some of you own recipes based on what you now know. Send your ideas in to us and we will see if we can improve on them. Next month we will be looking at exercises that you can do at home to burn fat.

If you need help to understand how it can work for you, or some coaching from us to make it easy to stick to, please contact the team at The Gym At Carswell 01367 870837 or email us at LoseWeight@the gymatcarswell.co.uk

Il Casone Glera Frizzante IGT NV Veneto, Italy Produced from the white Italian grape variety ‘glera’, which until 2009 was referred to as Prosecco. It is from the same area of prosecco production, which may have had a hand in this confusion (prosecco is produced from the grapes of the same name). Lightly sparkling with youthful aromas of white blossom alongside peaches and melon. The palate is refreshing, with flavours of crisp green apples with subtle melon and peach. Price £12.00 special festival price Sacchetto Pinot Rosa Frizzante IGT NV Veneto, Italy This fizz is produced from the grape varieties pinot nero (pinot noir) and pinot bianco. Coloured light salmon pink, it has very subtle aromas of strawberries and red currants on the nose. The palate delivers a refreshing burst of summer fruits; strawberries with red cherries as well as some white pepper on the finish. It is balanced, providing a crisp, clean finish. A great one to drink on its own! Price £12.00 special festival price Septima Sauvignon Blanc 2011 Mendoza, Argentina This wine’s aroma is especially expressive of sauvignon blanc and offers the freshness of citrus fruits; pink grapefruit, lemon and lime. Subtly entwined with gooseberry, nettles and asparagus is a touch of minerality. Thanks to its balanced acidity and alcohol, the wine finishes crisp and dry. £12.00 special festival price Donna Rogers: 01367 241169 http://www.denboerwines.com

Faringdon Town Football Club

Has been going for over 100 years and celebrated its centenary in 2006. Currently we have 5 boys teams, ages range from under 8’s through to under 16. The 3 men’s teams are managed and coached by Faringdon seniors who have previously played. Families are encouraged to participate in the football and social side of our club. The club is always looking for new members to join, both on the social side and hopefully become committee members. Input on how to progress is always welcome. The club is available to hire for any occasion at very reasonable rates. The football pitches are maintained by the club, having renewed the lease for the next 30 years. Details of the new 5 year plan for the football club can be found on the notice board in the club. We are a chartered standard club and hope to encourage girls and ladies teams to join. For this we need a ladies manager and coach to help us progress in both football and social activities. Details are available on our web site - we are also on twitter. Are you at risk from your customers? The benefits of credit insurance Improved cashflow We can assist you in the collection of your business’ overdue accounts to improve the speed and success with which you collect money owed to your business. Furthermore, should the worst happen and one of your buyers become insolvent, the prompt settlement of your claim will safeguard your cashflow. Focused sales effort for secure business growth Our insurers monitor over 40 million buyers. Through their credit limits and opinions service, clients can take advantage of their trade sector, country and buyer knowledge. If you decide to trade on the basis of their credit limit decision and your buyer refuses to pay or becomes insolvent you will be entitled to make a claim on your credit insurance policy. Help in securing trade finance Banks and trade financiers are often more willing to provide trade finance, or may be prepared to offer more favourable lending terms to businesses with a credit insurance policy. Risk avoidance and reduction of bad debt Insurers’ unique proprietary information, obtained by visiting companies and received through our clients, coupled with their detailed knowledge of businesses and trade sectors enables their Risk Analysts to set appropriate credit limits. By following their advice, you are able to review existing trading relationships and so reduce your exposure to potential bad debt. Better trading relationships with your suppliers You may be able to negotiate more favourable terms with your suppliers, since they know the business they are trading with has taken steps to protect its balance sheet assets. Tighter credit management discipline Using your credit insurance policy enables you to reassess your internal credit management procedures. Banks and trade financiers often take the existence of a credit insurance policy as an indicator that the business takes a structured approach to its credit control procedures. Peace of mind through risk transfer Credit insurance is a simple way to protect your business against the effects of bad debt. You have the reassurance of knowing that if one of the buyers covered under your policy can’t or won’t pay then in accordance with the policy the insurers will.

faringdon festival 2012 Festivities In Folly Park Fri 6, Sat 7 & Sun 8th July!!! Yes it is true that faringdon festival will be held in Folly Park in the area next to the Lake. Access will be easy for all via the main Entrance in Clements Way. You can also access the site from the foot path around the cricket pitch. We ask you to respect the fact that cricket matches are being played over that weekend. Please stick to the path.

Entrance is free but programmes will be on sale for ÂŁ2 that will give you the full list of all the Band times and a bit more about the festival. All the money raised by the selling of programmes and T-shirts will go towards the funding of the festival. This year as well as great music, we have even more stalls and lots of activities. For the children's entertainment there will be Face Painting, Bouncy Castle, Hook a Duck, Scarecrow Trails, Colouring Competitions, Children's Audio Reading, Dress up Tent, Children's Theatre, a penalty shoot out game and an ice cream van plus a few pocket money stalls. We even have a children's first aid tent for the little scuffs and scrapes that can happen whilst playing. Free tea and coffee will be available for Parents during the day from the Faringdon Baptist Church Tea Tent. For the big children (what are also known as Adults) we have a Rodeo Bull, lots of Stalls, Indian Street Food, Italian Pizza, Kebabs, Burgers and a festival would not be complete without a fully stocked Bar. There will be a new addition of a Performance tent this year that will host Poets, Story Tellers, Acoustic performances and the more unusual acts. For more details please go to our new website www.faringdonfestivals.co.uk where you can buy a programme, T-shirt and discounted beer tokens. Or just pop along and buy a programme and T shirt from some of the shops in Faringdon (details online).
