Thisbookofpoetryhascomeaboutthroughmyquest tounlockthemysteryofsexuallove.Thisisnotanew questforme.It’sasearchI’vebeenon,insomefashion,for mostofmylife.Asasextherapist,I’vemadeaprofession ofunderstandingandexplainingsex.
Asa youngchild,Irememberrepeatedlyharassingmy parentswithquestionafterquestionaboutsex.Theiranswerschangedovertime,becomingmorespecificandelaborateasIgrewmorematureandinquisitive.Bythetime Iwaseleven,buddingwithmyownsexualfeelings,curiousabouttruelove,andfrustratedwithtechnicalsoundingspermandeggexplanations,Ipressedthemformore
PassionateHearts informationabouttheactitself.“Thewomanliesonher backwithherlegsintheairandarmsopen,andtheman liesontopofher....”Althoughmyparentscontinuedtalking,Iheardonlyanoccasionalwordafterthisopeningline. Iwasstunned.Theimagethatformedinmymindwasof deadbugsonthesidewalk—lyingwiththeirfeetintheair, tangledtogether,andparchedbythesun.Myfirstexplicit sexualimagewasamajordisappointment.Whywould anyonewanttoshareanexperiencelikethatwithsomeone theylove?
Foreachofus,ourconceptofsexuallovehasbeen shapedovermanyyearsbythesexualimagespermitted andpromotedinourculture.Today,it’shardnottofind imagesofsexinoursociety.Sincethedawnofthesexual revolutioninthe1960s,wehavestrippedawaytheold, puritanicalrestrictionsthatoncemadesexataboosubject. Eroticimagesarewovensoextensivelyintoeveryaspectof ourculturethattheyleapoutatuswhenweopena magazine,turnonthetelevisionset,settlebackinamovietheater,orpassabillboardonthefreeway.Itissadandironic thatwhileoursexuallyobsessedculturefeedsusasteady streamofarousingsexualimages,manyofusfeelstarved whenitcomestounderstandingorsharingsexuallove.
Veryfewoftheunabashedlygraphicimageswesee dailydepictadultsengagedinwhatwewoulddescribeas healthysexualintimacy.Thoughmanyofusdesiremeaningful,intimateconnectionwithalover,mostofthesexual imagesweareexposedtoconditionustobearousedtosex without love.Likesomeonewhohaseatenonlyjunkfood, wewindupfeelingmalnourished.Noamountofbingeson “junksex”cansatisfyourhungerforrealconnection.In ourenthusiasmtoovercomepuritanicalconstraints,perhapsweoverlookedtheimportanceofpromotingcertain kindsofsexoverothers.
Sexualinteractionbasedonmutualcaringandrespect isverydifferentfromsexinwhichpeopleareobjectifiedor exploited.Loving,intimatesexcanbefarmoreenjoyable andsatisfyingthanimpersonalsex.Buttoenjoythesepleasuresofsexualloveweneedtoknowmore.
Althoughwearenaturallywiredwithastrongsexual drive,wearenotbornknowingalltheinformationwe needtofullyunderstandit.Mostofushavequestions aboutsex.Butinourculture,theanswersarenotalways accessibleorcomplete.Toexploreourpotentialassexual beings,weneedtounderstandnotonlythemechanicsof sex,butalsotheinterpersonalcontextforenjoyingsexual
love.Weneedmoreimagesthatgiveusmodelsforhealthy relating.Withexposuretotheseimageswecanlearnthat healthyintimacyisarousingandintenselypleasurable. Insteadofaculturaldietof“junksex”thatleavesustitillated,butstarved,weneedlasting,nourishingwaystosatisfyourhungerforsexualconnection.
Myquestforunderstandingsexualintimacytooka moreseriousturnwhenIbegantreatingadultsurvivorsof sexualabuse.Manyofthesepeoples ufferedfromcripplingsexualfearsanddangeroussexualcompulsions.For them,sexwasoftenunpleasantatbest.Theirsexualrelationsleftthemfeelingemotionallyisolated,oroutofcontrol. Healthysexualintimacy wasanoxymoron.Theycould notconceptualizeit,evenwhenIexplainedthatitwas definedbyconcreteconditions:Consent.Equality.Respect. Trust.Safety.
Aboutfiveyearsago,mylongquestforunderstanding sexuallovebecamemorefocused.Ibegananardentsearch tofindpositivesexualimages.Iwantedhealthyalternativestothenegativeimagesthatsurroundusinourculture, sothatIcouldshowthosewhohavefeltconfusedaboutor hurtbysexthatitcanbeverydifferent,thatitcaneven inspiremomentsofbeauty.
Thisisamessageallofusneedtohear,throughoutour lives.Asaparent,Iwantmychildrentohavehealthy sexualmodelstolearnfromastheygrowolder.Allofour childrendeservetoknowabouttheimportanceofsexual healthandthepossibilitiesforjoyandpleasurethatsex affords.Asanintimatepartner,Iwanttoberemindedof theinfinitedimensionsmyhusbandandIcanexplorein heart-connectedsex.Allofuswhoareinlong-termrelationshipsneed moreresourcestodrawinspirationfrom, whetherwearejustsettingoutasayoungcoupleorgrowingolderwithapartner.
Tobegin,Iscouredfilms,videoselections,popular books,andmagazinesforimagesthatportrayedsexas mutuallyenjoyable,sociallyresponsible,andphysically safe.Iwasshockedathowfewsexuallyexplicitexamples ofhealthysexIcouldfind.TheimagesIfound—perfume ads,greetingcards,andmodernlovestories—werepretty weakstuffcomparedtothelatestissueof Penthouse magazine.Althoughthereweresomepassagesineroticaand romancenovelsthatconveyedhealthysexdynamics,many ofthethemesinthesestoriesstillcenteredonimpersonal, irresponsible,orsecretivesex.
Next,mysearchtookmetothelibrary.Perhapsthe
PassionateHearts joysofmutuallysatisfyingsexuallovehadbeencelebrated bywritersyearsago.Ibegansiftingthroughclassicworks ofliteratureandpoetry.Buttheseworks,byandlarge,let medown.Ifoundanoccasionalgem,butmoreoftenIwas remindedofthelonghistoryofsexualinequalitybetween menandwomenfromwhichwearestillevolving.Older poemstoooftenlackedthemutuallyintimatelovethata healthy,maturerelationshipdemands.
Untilquiterecently,malepoetshavedominatedthis genre.ToomanyoftheeroticpoemsIfoundintheclassic textstendedtorepeatthemesofobjectifying,adoring,or controllingfemales. TheKamaSutra,oneoftheclassicEasternlovetexts,speaksrepeatedlyofintimaterelationsbetween“thegirl”and“theman.”Inachapterentitled “CreatingConfidenceintheGirl,”thetextadvisestheman whoseyoungloverisreluctant:
Ifshewouldnotyieldtohimheshouldfrightenherby saying‘Ishallimpressmarksofmyteethandnailson yourlipsandbreasts...’1
ClassicWesternlovepoemsaregenerallylessgraphicallydirect,butoftenjustasoffensivetomyethicofhealthy

INTRODUCTION intimacy.Theyperpetuatedtheculturalnormsoftheirday, especiallythebeliefthatawoman’spersonalsexualexperiencewasirrelevant;herpleasurewouldcomeinbeinga submissivevehicleforsatisfyingaman’ssexualdesires.In “TheJewels,”theFrenchpoetCharlesBaudelairewrites:
Mywell-belovedwasstripped.Knowingmywhim Sheworehertinklinggems,butnaughtbesides; Andshowedsuchprideas,whileherluckbetides, Asultan’sfavouredslavemayshowtohim.2
Inclassicpoetry,trueconsent,basedonarightto refusesexatanytime,seemednonexistent.WilliamButler Yeatsdescribesamanassertingpoweroverhisloverin “DownbytheSalleyGardens”:

Butwithinafewlines,hereferstohisloveras“my sister,mychild.”Ishudderedtothinkhowsurvivorsof incestandrapewouldrespondtothespecificimagesIwas finding,andhowallofuswouldhearthewrongmessage reinforced,ifIweretoreturntothesepoetsforinspiration. Ifeltdisillusionedthatthetraditional“love”poetswhose worksIhadenjoyedtwenty-fiveyearsago,whenIstudied poetryincollege,werereinforcingrelationshipdynamics thatpreventmutuallyrewardingsexualloveandintimacy. Howeverlyricalorsensuousthelanguagesounds,love poetryofthepastlacksafoundationofequalitybetween twopartners.Withoutthisframework, eventhemost

beautifulpoemfailstoevokerelationshipsbuiltonmutual caring,withbothpartnersactiveparticipantsinloving.
Eventhoughmyinitialeffortstofindsex-positive imageryuncoveredonlyahandfulofappropriateworks, thisstepinmysearchwasimportant.Itgotmereadingand appreciatingpoetry.
Poetryspeaksauniversallanguage.Unlikelonger prose,whichtendstorelatemorespecificallytoacharacter, poemsevokeimagesthatresonatefor eachofus,regardless ofgenderorsexualorientation.Withafewsparelinesof text,theycaptureaworldofexperience.Wedon’tneedan advanceddegreeinliteraturetoappreciatethemeaningof awell-writtenpoem.Thewordsspeakrighttoourheart. Thepoet’smetaphorsconnectouractionsashumanswith thelargerlifeforcesinnature.Andtheyfocusonthe momentaryglimpseswegainthroughexperience.Because sexitselfisamomentarybutprofoundexperience,poetry isaperfectmediumforexploringthemeaning,mystery, andbeautyofsex.
Outofthedisappointmentofmyinitialsearchcame mystrongconvictiontocreatearesourceforpositive imagesofsexuallove.Iwouldlocatetheelusiveimages
PassionateHearts myself.AndIwoulddoitwithquality,readablepoetry. Accessibletoanyone.
Ilaunchedacampaigntolocatetheworksofcontemporarypoetswritingaboutsexuallove.Ithoughtperhaps they,writingintoday’smoreegalitarianera,wouldbea bettersourceforworks.Isought“heartcore”poems;poems thatinspireandcelebratehealthysexualintimacy;poemsin whichheartconnectionisatthecoreofthesexualexperience.Iadvertisedinnationalpoetryjournals,sentflyersto creativewritingcentersandwritingprogramsatuniversities,andbeganmakingpersonalcontactswithsomeinfluentialcontemporarypoets.
AsIreviewedthemorethan1,500submissions,Ikept inmindthateachpoemhadtomeettheconditionsthatI considernecessaryforhealthysexualintimacy.Iasked: Doesthispoemrepresentmutualcaringanddesire?Dothe partnersrelateasequals,respectingeachotherasseparate individuals?Isthereasenseofemotionaltrustandhonesty?Arethesexualinteractionsassumedtobesafefrom emotionalandphysicalharm?Doesthepoemcelebrate sensualpleasures?
Whentheseconditionsaremetinlife,asinpoetry, wearefreetoenjoyandexploresexuallove.Honoring
healthysexconditionsallowsustosafelyembracesex, enjoyit,withoutfearofanynegativeoutcomes.Only goodwillresult.Adoptingtheseguidelinesdoesnotrestrictintimatesexualpleasure,butratherpermitsitto growandflourish.
Mysearchintocontemporarypoetrybroughtpersonal satisfactionandrichrewards.Ibegantodiscoverthat today’spoetsareveryinterestedinhelpingtoexplainand exploresexuallove.Forthegeneralreader, thewordsare understandable.Forthereaderwithadeeperbackgroundin literature,thepoemsbringtogethersomewell-knowncontemporarypoets,andsomenewervoices.Together,their combinedperspectivesdeeplypenetratethemysteryofsex.
ListentoMollyPeacockin“ThePurr,”searching fornewwordstodescribethesamemysterythatD.H. Lawrencecouldnotsolve:

AndpoetSharonOldsgivesnewmeaningtofamiliar wordsasshedescribes“makinglove”inherpoem“The Knowing”:

WhenIreadStephenCorey’s“ComplicatedShadows,” inwhichherecallsasexualexperienceoutdoorsonahot day,Icouldn’thelpbutsmilerememberingmychildhood imageofinsectsex.InCorey’sverydifferentview,theimage camewonderfullyalivewithnewconsciousnessaboutthe interplayandunionoftwolovers:
Tohawkswe’reawoodlandinsect, fourlegsaboveandfourbelow,twitching ontheground....
Weareweavingandfolding,we knowthissoilisagreatcompostheap, wearemakingandunmaking light—forcingtheaginghotsuntorun.
ThepoemsIhaveselectedforthisvolumecelebrate thepositiveaspectsofsex,builtonaplatformofhealthy
relating.Asthesepoetsillustratesowell,wehavenoneed tofeelshameaboutsex.It’sasnaturaltousaslaughter. Whentheconditionsareright—whenwe’refeelingsafe andnothumiliated—laughterbubblesupasawonderful energybetweentwopeople.Itfeelsgood.Andit’sthesame withsex.Appropriately,manyofthepoemsarelightheartedandplayful.AllisonJoseph,in“Learningto Laugh,”describeshowlovemakingcanbringforthlaughtersorich“thatIcouldn’tbelievesuchasound/could comefrommynakedbody.”Yet,shegoesontotellof:
thelaughsthatjustkeep coming,risingoutofme tostoptrafficontheboulevard, driversslowingtolisten tothemostjoythey’veeverheard.
Theorganizationforthisbookgrewnaturallyoutof thepoemsthemselves.Byanalmostorganicprocess,it seemedthattheyfittogetherintochaptersaboutthestages ofhumansexualrelating.
AsIorganizedthepoems,Irealizedthatthe shapeof thebookwasametaphorinitself.Insex,webeginwith desireandexcitement,buildtoaplateau,experiencethe
PassionateHearts releaseoforgasm,thenmoveontoastateofresolution. Thisisthephysicaldescriptionweunderstandasthesexual responsecycle.Inmanyways,thisactofsexualexpression recapitulatesallthestagesofhealthysexualrelating.
Inarelationship,weexperiencethebuildingexcitementofgettingtoknowapotentialpartner.Theopening chapter,“TenderAwakenings,”containspoemsthatexplorethatfirstsparkofinitialattraction.Thesepoetswrite aboutthefearsandhesitanciesthatsometimesgetinthe wayofourdesireforlove.Theydescribetheimportanceof waitinguntilbothpartnersareready.Theyhelpusto understandthefoundationoftrustandsafetyweneedfor awakeningtosharedsexualpleasure.
Oncebothpartnersfeelready,theycanmoveforward tosharetheplayfulnessandsensualityofphysicallove. Thesecondchapter,“PassionatePleasures,”exploressome oftheinfinitewaysthattwobodies,twohearts,might intertwineasone.Thesepoemscelebratetheintensityand ecstasythatcomefromphysicalsharing.Thisisfrightening,attimes,tothepeopleinthesepoems,justasitcanbe overwhelminginreallife.Sexualarousalbringswithitthe experienceofabandon.Surrenderingtosexualpleasure challengesourbasichumaninstincttobealertandin
