does art

matter? Santa Fe Gallery Association works to bring connoisseurship to the public

By Kate McGraw For the Journal

Santa Fe, as the press release from the Santa Fe Gallery Association ballyhooing its latest promotion states, is “one of the most distinctive cultural destinations in America.” There are more than 200 art galleries and more than a dozen museums presenting exhibitions of art every year. Santa Fe is a small town, but its art scene — concentrated in a two-squaremile area focused on Canyon Road, downtown and the Railyard — is multidimensional and wide-ranging. Small wonder Santa Fe became the first U.S. municipality to be chosen by UNESCO as a Creative City. In fact, it’s one of only nine cities in the world to hold this designation. Nevertheless, the last few years of recession have hurt the gallery business badly. Something had to be done, Association members said to one another, to “get the collectors back into the galleries,” as David Eichholtz, manager of David Richard Gallery, put it baldly. The first Art Matters/Santa Fe starts today and runs this weekend and next in more than 17 galleries and museums around the city. Each venue includes a current exhibition plus a related event — an artist talk, a lecture, a panel discussion, a demonstration— sometimes during the Art Matters weekends. “I just really felt we needed to celebrate the breadth of art here and highlight for collectors the high degree of expertise and knowledge and connoisseurship in Santa Fe,” Eichholtz said of his brainchild. “We want to get people back into the galleries to meet the artists and curator and gallerists. “We have a lot of galleries and museums,” he said. “It’s very wonderful, the amount of knowledge in this town about Native, Western, traditional, Hispanic, contemporary, modernist, even African — all highclass art. “This is a shoulder season with delightful weather. There are a lot of great shows open at this time,”
