what’s your watch personality ?

There are many wonderful watches on the market, something for everyone. But how to find the one that’s right for you?

To get some guidance, we turned to Gregory Gardinetti, Patrimonie and Culture Manager at the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva. Gardinetti studies the history of watches and knows what makes watch buyers tick. He has discovered that watch owners tend to fall into certain categories based on interests, and that this determines which watch suits them best.

To find out which category you fall into, answer the questions here and on the next page.

2.do you enjoy going to museums and galleries? do you collect art?

If you answered yes, Gardinetti says, “People who love art will appreciate timepieces with craftsmanship, such as enamel, engraving and gem-setting.” These watches by nature tend to be among the most expensive, as these time-honored and time-consuming skills are practiced by only a few artisans, and it can take days, weeks or even months to complete ornamenting a watch of this kind.

1.are you intrigued by technology?

Are you first to own the latest smart phone? Do you compare your watch’s features with your friends’ timepieces? If you said yes, “You will appreciate watches with complications,” says Gardinetti. New watch collectors might buy a moon phase watch, or one with a tourbilllon. More seasoned watch collectors might find it’s time to add a chronograph or minute repeater to their collection. And the new Smartwatches combine extraordinary design with smartwatch functionalities.

3.do you spend your free time watching or playing sports?

Do you throw or attend an annual Super Bowl party?

Have you attended Wimbledon, the French Open or the U.S. Open? Have you received your international diving certificate and are you planning your winter vacation exploring Australia’s Great Barrier Reef?

Says Gardinetti, “Athletes will of course love sports watches. ”They are built to withstand rugged activities, with handsome good looks to match. And sports watches have the sorts of functions, from stopwatch to diving-depth indicator, to serve your active life.

20 KELLEY JEWELERS MAGAZINE

Gregory Gardinetti is a historian in fine watchmaking. In 2010 he joined the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie where, as culture and patrimony manager, he has charge of exhibitions and lectures, and approves the historical content of the Fondation's website.

4.do you like classics?

If you’re a woman, do you own at least two black cashmere sweaters? If you’re a man, are there at least two navy blazers in your closet?

“If you like pure things, elegant things,” Gardinetti maintains, “you’ll choose a watch that looks the same.” Watches with clean white or blac faces and Roman or Arabic numerals and a timeless round or simple tank shape with a leather bracelet will best match your elegant wardrobe and attitude.

5.are you into fashion?

Do you follow Fashion Week coverage on Style.com? Have you seen every episode of “Project Runway”? “For some people who enjoy fashion it’s all about the look,” says Gardinetti. “A quartz or mechanical watch is all the same to them.” If you’re a fashionista, you’re likely to have a wardrobe of watches, so there’s one to match your every outfit, from day to night, casual to dressy. And you likely own at least one watch designed by a fashion designer.

Bottom line: “A watch is what you love and what you want to look like,” Gardinetti says. “It’s why watchmaking is magical and personal, and why there is a watch for everyone.”

THE WEDDING TRENDS

Getting personal and finding “the one” for you... Engagement rings as unique and individual as you are.

There has never been a better time to be an engagement ring shopper. There are so many dazzling designs to choose from you are sure to find “the one” that best expresses your uniqueness — in addition to you and your partner’s special love story. To help guide you through a sea of settings we turned to experts who keep watch on wedding jewelry trends, Amanda Gizzi, spokesperson for Jewelers of America and Severine Ferrari, founder of Engagement 101. Here’s what to know to find the ring that is perfect for you.

Solitaires Stand The Test Of Time

The beauty of a round single center stone never grows old — it’s still the leading shape, classic and timeless. And because the shape doesn’t have any sharp angles, it’s less prone to chipping.

❥ To make it more personal: Stack it. Putting a band above and below the solitaire elevates it, especially if your bands incorporate a special meaning about you and your partner, such as birthstones or different size diamonds.

28 KELLEY JEWELERS MAGAZINE

Hidden Details Make A Ring More Special

A row or two of small pave diamonds surrounding the center stone gives even the smallest stone a lot more wattage, which is why halos continue to be a popular feature in engagement ring settings.

❥ To make it more personal: Consider a hidden halo to make the ring extra special. Couples are opting to include accent gems with notable meaning, such as birthstones under the setting where only the wearer can feel their presence. This trend also includes etching dates and messages into the inside of the ring.

Defy Tradition

Fancy-shape diamonds — pears, trapezoids, marquise, cushion and emerald cuts — defy tradition and automatically express their individuality.

❥ To make it more personal: Any of these cuts can look especially amazing turned on their sides in an east-west setting.

KELLEY JEWELERS MAGAZINE 29

Ovals Are Elegant

The popular elongated shape is not only flattering to the finger, it too, is chip resistant. The larger surface area makes the stone appear larger, with its facets throwing off a lot of sparkle.

❥ To make it more personal: Set it on its side in a unique and eye-turning stunning east-west setting.

THE WEDDING TRENDS

Look For New Spins On Three-Stone Settings

Traditional and timeless, three stone rings with matching diamonds will always be a bride’s favorite.

❥ To make it more personal: Three stone rings don’t always have to feature matching stones. Accents are another way to express uniqueness. Now trending, center stones being flanked by two smaller stones, sometimes diamonds in different shapes or even colored gemstones.

Think Something Blue

While diamonds still rule when it comes to engagement rings, some brides are opting to incorporate color gemstones into their rings. Sapphires are the most popular and durable stones next to diamonds

❥ To make it more personal: Choose sapphires in a lighter blue hue. Or if your taste runs to ruby red or emerald green, think of adding them as accent stones since neither is as durable as a diamond or sapphire.

KELLEY JEWELERS MAGAZINE 31

THE WEDDING TRENDS

Two-Stone Rings Are Gaining In popularity

The toi et moi setting, symbolizing two lovers sitting side by side, is far from a passing fad. The romantic design with matching stones dates back centuries.

❥ To make it more personal: Choose stones in different shapes or one diamond and one gemstone.

Metals Matter

While you can’t go wrong with gold (yellow, pink or white) or platinum, know that platinum is the most durable metal followed by yellow gold. White gold may require some maintenance to keep its sheen. And all four metals are skin friendly.

❥ To make it more personal: Two-tone settings are trending often with a platinum crown to make the stone more secure and appear as sparkly-white as possible.

32 ABC JEWELERS MAGAZINE

Stacking Bands Are As Popular As Ever Adding to a stack is a wonderful way to commemorate an anniversary, birthday or other special occasion. And rearranging and playing with stacks is a great way to keep your look unique and fresh.

❥ To make it more personal: Consider a band with more swerves, curves and a little more of an organic shape. It’s a fresh, new look that can give you the illusion of stacking without needing to pile on more.

TIMELINE ... a concise history of the Engagement Ring.

1477

Archduke Maximilian of Austria presented the first diamond engagement ring on record to his fiancée, Mary of Burgundy. The ring, which represented the letter “M” in diamonds and gold, launched a trend amongst the European nobility.

Late 1400s-1600s

1660s 1800s

Cardinal Mazarin commissioned the first brilliant cut diamond, the Mazarin, in France. The 17-faceted crown is considered the ancestor of the modern-day round brilliant cut, the most popular diamond shape today. He served under two kings and acquired the most exceptional diamond collection in Europe.

“Poesy rings,” often bearing sentimental inscriptions, were popular in Europe, exchanged by lovers upon engagement or simply as a sign of affection. Silver rings indicating engagement were often replaced by gold bands upon marriage. The inscription inside reads “LOYALTE NE PEUR,” which translates to “loyalty not fear.”

“Dearest Rings” were popular during the Victorian Era. The gemstones in the gallery spell out the word ‘Dearest’ with each first letter of the stone –Diamond - Emerald - Amethyst – Ruby –Emerald – Sapphire – Tourmaline.

The 21.25 carat Eureka Diamond was the first diamond discovered in South Afric. It prompted a diamond rush. Over the next few years, huge deposits were found and the market became flooded with gems. Diamonds ceased to be a true rarity and became affordable for those of more modest means.

1867

1886 1901-1914 1920s–1930s

Tiffany & Co. developed a special solitaire six-prong setting to maximize light return on a diamond ring. The “Tiffany setting.”elevated the gem and displayed more of the surface area, allowing for increased sparkle.

During the Edwardian Era, engagement rings became much more popular. Rings often featured platinum and elegant, feminine details such as filigree and milgrain, creating a delicate “lacy” look. The trend was interrupted by WWI, when platinum resources had to be redirected to the war effort.

Engagement rings with dramatic geometric patterns were in demand during the Art Deco Era. The designs lent rings a modern aesthetic. This ring style usually incorporated diamonds into patterns accented with other colorful gems.

Diamond engagement ring sales plummeted during the Great Depression. In response, De Beers launched an intensive ad campaign, culminating in 1947 with copywriter Frances Gerety’s phrase “a diamond is forever.” By the late 1940s, diamond engagement rings were the leading line of jewelry in most stores. By the 1960s, 80% of engaged or married women sported a diamond ring. Now, nearly 80 years later, the four-word sentiment has become one of the most recognizable brand slogans of all time.

1947 Today

More than ever, brides want engagement rings that stand apart from the crowd and express their unique personal style. Less traditional shapes such as the emerald, pear, and cushion cut are growing in popularity, as are colored diamonds and other precious gems. Brides are paying more attention to the accents of engagement ring design, adding custom details such as engraving, braiding, or a split shank.
