BACK TO THE FUTURE G-Shock’s 40th anniversary watches push its rich legacy to new heights.

I

egendary Casio watchmaking legend Kiko Ube set out to achieve the ultimate strength in a wristwatch - indestructibility. He wanted his new watch to not just be waterproof and shockproof, but be able to withstand the most physically extreme, punishing situations. Ibe and his team had three design criteria called the triple ten - the watch had to withstand a 10 meter drop, 10 atmospheres of water pressure, and have a battery life of 10 years. In 1982, that was a tall order indeed. “Over 200 handmade samples were created and tested to destruction," according to the brand," until finally in 1983 the first, now iconic G-SHOCK hit the streets of Japan and began to establish itself as “the toughest watch of all time”. With Ibe’s “a watch that never breaks,” a star was born, and Casio has never looked back. How has Casio kept the G-Shock relevant? By adding new and improved functions, durability, and designs, while staying true to its roots. Forty years on, G-Shock watches continue to break the boundaries of what’s physically possible. Today, all G-Shock watches boast the legendary seven elements: electric shock resistance, gravity resistance, low temperature resistance, vibration resistance, water resistance, shock resistance and toughness. Over 100 million G-SHOCK watches have been produced, and passionate collectors around the world participate in discussion forums dedicated to their mutual love of G-SHOCKs. In celebration of the G-Shock's 40th anniversary, this G-SHOCK GM-B2100 year's new watch introductions feature iconic designs with a nod to the past paired with, of course, the latest in capabilities. Let's take a look. A FULL-METAL VERSION FOR THE LEGENDARY 2100 LINE THE RECRYSTALLIZED SERIES The 2100 pays homage to the design of the very first G-Shock watch, the

company, said in a statement. “The stainless steel is processed into components and then recrystallized, yielding unique differences in crystalline grain.” The new Full-Metal timepieces feature G-Shock's Tough Solar technology and carry Bluetooth connectivity. The bio-resin used in the watch’s band and bezel reduces the watch’s environmental impact. Each watch’s band loop is embossed with four stars symbolizing the four decades of G-SHOCK, and the watch’s caseback is engraved with the anniversary logo. The functions and capabilities of the new watches, which are available in three colors, include 200M water resistance, shock resistance, World Time, a1/100th second stopwatch, countdown timer, and more. THE MR-G FROGMAN 30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION

The FROGMAN series is ever-popular among G-Shock aficionados. It is also celebrating an anniversary, its 30th. “The newest G-SHOCK GM-B2100GD FROGMAN gives a nostalgic nod to the second-generation DW8200 model with an all-new, all-red 30th-anniversary design,” the brand said in a statement. A double anniversary calls for a special watch, and this new MR-G FROGMAN does not disappoint. The GW8230NT-4 watch’s bezel color is reimagined in red with a matching red strap. The watch’s titanium case, with its screw-lock caseback, provides a full 200M of water resistance, even when its function buttons are deployed underwater. A solar panel harnesses light to power the watch’s timekeeping and myriad other functions. The watch’s Super Illuminator, a high brightness full-auto LED backlight ensures readability in even the darkest dive conditions. The watch’s special, dive-specific functions provide both underwater safety and data recording. “In addiG-SHIOCK GW-8230NT-4D tion to dive time and surface interval measurements, memory for up to ten diving logs is included for recording data such as the dive start date and time as well as the time spent in the water,” according to the brand. “Tide graphs and moon data also provide handy ways to keep on top of conditions at dive locations.” Exclusive 30th anniversary commemorative design details will be appreciated by FROGMAN aficionados. When the LED backlight is activated, the diving FROGMAN logo appears on the watch’s dial. On the watch’s caseback, the iconic FROGMAN logo is engraved, with “30th” added in honor of the anniversary. 30

THE NEW REMASTER BLACK COLLECTION

Another exciting addition to the 40th Anniversary lineup is a series of three watches called the Remaster Black Collection. The first is the DWE5657RE-1, which is inspired by the DW5600C and DW5700C watches that were introduced in 1987. These two original timepieces “kicked off G-SHOCK's growing popularity throughout the 1990s and beyond,” the

brand stated. The new watch is designed “in a way that keeps the original models faithfully maintained while providing upgrades to the watch's design features.” Those upgrades include two interchangeable bezels and a 5-year battery life. The second Remaster Black is inspired by the DW-6600 that debuted in 1994. The new DW6640RE-1 features the original watch’s round case and front button, with the addition of the 40th Anniversary logo, which is visible when the Super Illuminator is activated. Rounding out the new Remaster Blacks is the GA2140RE-1A, based on the GA2100 that was introduced in 2019. The watch’s octagonal case shape “calls back to the firstever G-SHOCK,” the brand stated. All three watches' metal band loops are engraved with four stars and “Since 1983.” The 40th anniversary logo engraved on their casebacks. Undoubtedly, with these new introductions marking G-SHOCK’s 40th anniversary, collectors are already looking ahead to its 45th.

I

t used to be that if a woman wanted a piece of jewelry she had to wait until someone gifted her with it. It could be for her birthday, or Valentine’s Day, for her graduation or her anniversary. These days women aren’t waiting anymore. “If I see it and I want it, I buy it,” says a lawyer in Rio de Janeiro, typical of the thinking today. And the occasion for treating herself may be a promotion or a divorce or simply because, as one editor in Tokyo says, “I work hard and I deserve it.” According to a study conducted by the marFope Love Nest Ring ket-research firm Mintel of jewelry purchases in the U.S., more than half of the women surveyed who purchased jewelry did so to treat themselves. One reason behind the shift is that more women are working, making their own money and feeling they can spend it how they see fit. In fact, according to Forbes.com, women now control Fope Panorama Earrings over $20 trillion in annual consumer spending globally. They are transforming the marketplace, and that includes jewelry. And they aren’t buying trinkets. One jeweler we interviewed in Pittsburgh reported a female executive

buying a piece of diamond jewelry that cost in the six figures, while another jeweler in Atlanta said her female customers buying for themselves usually spend Fope Essentials Earrings a couple of thousand dollars. As with all jewelry purchases, the amount spent is based on income, so as more women rise the corporate ladder and earn higher salaries, the price spent on fine jewelry increases as well. Many women see the purchase of fine jewelry as an investment, as much a part of their financial portfolio as buying stocks, bonds or real estate. And many woman find justification for an expensive jewelry purchase in the realization that they can always pass along a valuable piece as part of their inheritance. Says one New York City mother, “I have two daughters and I’ve picked out the pieces they will inherit. Some belonged to my mother.” But perhaps a Parisian fashion designer we spoke Fope Eka Flex’it Bracelet to best expressed the most compelling reason for a woman to buy jewelry for herself: “You get exactly the jewelry that you want.”
