FRAGMENT DETAIL The fragment detail is located on the West side of the SBS Television Studio building.

The fragmented panel is comprised of a small triangle, which is then arranged to recreate the same triangular form, but with five separate, but identical, triangles.

This five-panel triangle is then attached to a mirrored version, which is the main shape replicated throughout the screen.

Fastened to an aluminum frame creating a panel, which is then fastened to another aluminum frame panel, and then to a steel skeleton structure.

The zinc mesh is folded around the aluminum frame and fastened with a bolt.

SANDSTONE PANEL The fragment detail is located on the West side of the SBS Television Studio building.

The fragmented panel is comprised the same way as the zinc panels, however, they are fixed to the aluminum frame in a different fashion.

Although not entirely visible, there are three types of connections possible to fasten the sandstone to the aluminum frame: a cross dowel nut system, an L-bolt system, or an anchor bolt system.

The Sandstone is connected through the back-side of the panel, and bolted to the aluminum framing.

GLASS PANEL The fragment detail is located on the West side of the SBS Television Studio building.

The fragmented panel is comprised the same way as the zinc and sandstone panels, however, they are fixed to the aluminum frame in a different fashion.

There are no visible signs of how the glass is fastened, which leads me to believe that structural silicone is used to hold the glass panels in place on the aluminum frame.

ALUMINUM FRAMING The fragment detail is located on the West side of the SBS Television Studio building.

The panel is created in the same shape as the five-triangle panel formation, but smaller.

Horizontal Connection Detail The first horizontal aluminum frame connection lays flush with, and mimics, the triangular panels, and are what the panels attach to. The ends of the aluminum are cut on an angle and welded to form a flush corner.

The second horizontal aluminum frame connection connects all five triangular panels together.

ALUMINUM FRAMING PERPENDICULAR CONNECTION DETAIL The alunimum fragments are welded together to form a solid structure.

The aluminum structure is then fastened to the second horizontal aluminum panel and the individual panels, and sits perpendicular to the main framing system.

It is then bolted to the steel skeleton structure.

FRAGMENT DETAIL The fragment detail is located on the West side of The Ian Porter Centre: NGV building.

The fragmented glazing is comprised of a variety of fragmented glass panels, which are held together by silicone and aluminum framing, which is then fasted to a steel skeleton structure.

ALUMINUM FRAMING FOR GLASS The glass panel sits on top of the industrial foam and u-channel frame, and is secured with structural silicone.

The glass panel fits under the lip of the aluminum window mullion, which secures it and insures it does not move.

The aluminum window mullion is connected by an L-bracket to the U-channel steel framing.

The window framing system is further connected to the steel support structure by an S-5 bracket which is bolted to the bottom of the U-channel steel frame.

Zinc (perforated and solid), Sandstone, Glass, Aluminum, Steel, Structural Silicone Each triangular panel is fastedned to a aluminum frame, mimicing the five-triangle shape. This aluminum frame is connected to a mirrored aluminum frame, and is then bolted to a steel skeleton structure, which cantilevers from the roof of the SBS Television Studio.

SYSTEMS AND COMPONENTS

FIRMITAS vs VENUSTAS

Each custom-made glass panel is secured between fragmented aluminum framing, which is then bolted to a steel skeleton structure.

The firmitas both improves and supports the venustas. The fragmentation portrayed in both the SBS television studio and the Ian Porter Centre symbolizes the function of Federation Square. We are all fragments that congregate in this civic and cultural space, as each building and triangular panel are a fragment that connects to create a cohort.

The firmitas does not support or improve the utilitas because I believe the fragmented system to be over-engineered. The system in which everything is held together is far too complicated and an unnecessary expenditure.
