Southbank has become a staple of Melbourne for food, shopping, and entertainment. A destination of choice for people who flock from the city to this area of respite. What goes unnoticed, however, is the leftover strip of land, acting as a buffer between the Hoddle Grid and the Yarra.

An area severely underutilized and underappreciated, but simultaneously full of potential.

The Greenline has the capability to become an area of refuge for city dwellers and workers. An area that invites users to engage and heal themselves mentally, physically, and emotionally.

With increasing population and billions of dollars lost each year due to lack of productivity and stress-related illnesses, there is an opportunity for healthy and restorative integrations throughout the north bank to improve the well-being of its users.

This project looks to explore both macro and micro levels of well-being. Running and cycling is a big part of Melbourne culture, but the lack of infrastructure on the north bank means that runners and cyclists tend to avoid this area. It is important to create activities for all ages, as well as areas that allow people to emotionally and mentally relax.

The concept of the main building is an inside-out building. Celebrating Enterprize Park while the program gets pulled out and tucked underneath the viaduct. A green oasis in the city, green walls shielding users from the viaduct, and a green ramp over the road to link to the other park to get it activated.

A place of well-being and oasis in the heart of the city.

This concept was derived from site and data analysis (solar, heat maps, marketing figures), which guided initial volumes. Further research on materiality and biophilic principles shaped the way in which the building interacts with nature, thus, creating a comfortable, relaxing, and intrinsic environment for the users.
