"I go to nature to be soothed and healed and to have my senses put in order."
John Burroughs
Green Belt:
This is land around cities where no buildings are allowed to keep it open and full of nature, like parks and fields. It is mostly protected from development to preserve nature and prevent cities from growing too much.
Brown Belt:
This is land that has already been used for buildings or factories. It can be used again for new buildings or homes. It is land that has already been built on, and the government encourages its reuse for new development.
Preface
One sunny day, I drove into the countryside along roads I have known all my life. I passed horses in the fields, cows and sheep resting on the land, and people enjoying the fresh air with their families and dogs. The world was coming alive again after the pandemic, and everyone was out and about again. When I arrived at my favourite green field, I stepped out of the car and took a deep breath. The breeze carried whispers through the trees; I could hear children’s playful laughter in the distance as it echoed across the open space. Standing there, with the grass stretching as far as I could see, I felt a sense of peace and tranquillity in that moment I will never forget.
This book is inspired by that moment. It’s for anyone who loves the countryside and open places where they can walk, dream, and play. Let us celebrate the beautiful green fields and the passionate individuals committed to protecting them for the enjoyment of present and future generations!

Jonni Greenbelt loved the countryside more than anything. The rolling hills, the whispering trees, and the wide-open green spaces made him feel alive, filling him with a sense of well-being and joy. Jonni lived with his parents and his sister on a small farm at the edge of the village. His parents were hardworking but also knew how to have fun. Jonni’s sister, Katherine, loved books and learning about interesting facts.
One day, Jonni learned some troubling news - his parents’ beautiful field, where he had played as a boy and dreamed of endless adventures, was at risk of being turned into rows of houses. He couldn’t imagine the field, with its flowers and buzzing bees, being replaced by concrete. Jonni knew he had to act, but saving the field wouldn’t be easy. He tried repeatedly to find someone who could help, but the answers were disappointing each time, and the challenge seemed greater than ever.
Now, it’s your turn to join Jonni in his adventure and discover if Jonni can save the field he loves and keep its magic alive for everyone to enjoy.
Let’s begin!
Jonni Greenbelt was a young man who cared about many things…
He cared about green spaces and open fields…
He cared about the squirrels who lived in the trees.
He cared about the goats who grazed in the fields.
He cared about the Hedgehogs living quietly…
He cared about the call of the Meadow Pipit…
The sound of young lapwings…
And the buzzing of bees as they pollinated the flowers…
Jonni loved the green open fields in the daytime…
And the green open fields at night.
Sometimes, he played his guitar in the fields…
Even though his only audience was a curious owl…!
Jonni’s parents were a harmonious couple who loved to play their accordions.
Jonni’s parents believed that children should enjoy nature and not worry too much
Jonni had a younger sister called Catherine, who loved reading books. She was always learning new things.
Jonni loved green fields because they made him feel healthy, happy, and free.
The green field he loved the most was the one on his parents’ farm.
However, one day, a sign appeared on the field that made Jonni feel sad…
Jonni’s parents told him that problems are like clouds… they come and go.
Nevertheless, Jonni wanted to know why this had happened and who was behind all this…
Dulcie Jones was the new Minister for House Building in the government. She was not a bad person, but she was not very experienced.
Dulcie believed there were too many green fields and that building more houses everywhere would make the countryside more like a city.
She wanted to buy greenfield sites as well as brownfield sites, but local people did not like this idea.
Building on greenfield sites is usually prohibited so that these precious areas are kept safe forever.
Brownfields are sites with old buildings from past factories. Once they are cleaned up, these areas are perfect for building new homes.
Here is the letter Dulie Jones sent to Jonni’s parents explaining everything:
Dulcie Jones MP, House of Commons, London
Dear Mr and Mrs Greenbelt,
I am the new minister for an exciting new project in your county. This plan will reduce the number of green fields and increase the number of houses and cars in your area. While we appreciate that this will not be popular with everyone, we believe it will benefit the greater good. That’s how it looks from where I am sitting in London, anyway.
Your green field has been chosen as the first field in our national campaign! We will work with our development partners, Hectaire and Grabber, and a host of subcontractors who have contributed so much to the standard of modern housing. We look forward to working with you as we transform your green field!
Yours sincerely,
Dulcie Jones MP.
Phillip Hectaire and James Grabber were developers who liked to build lots of houses anywhere they could.
They were known for building houses so close together that people could shake hands with their neighbours before going to bed at night.
Dulcie Jones had formed a partnership with Hectaire and Grabber, and they planned to cover the field with as many houses as possible.
Jonni had to figure out a way to solve this problem. Because problems are like clouds, and they come and go…
Jonni decided to contact three famous people to see if they could help.
He began by writing a letter to his favourite guitarist, Brian Hay because he knew he also liked the countryside.
Brian Hay was a famous guitarist who cared about the animals who lived in green fields. In fact, he wrote several songs about them:
I Want to Dig Free Radio Badger
Badgerian Rhapsody Some badger to Love
But Brian was on tour, and he was unable to help. However, he did write a song for Jonni and here are the lyrics: Verse
There’s a hedgehog in the hedgerow, rolling with style, A fox in the meadow with a cheeky smile, Owls hold court in the old oak tree, While the rabbits bounce around in an all-night spree.
Chorus
Don’t bulldoze the magic, don’t wreck the morning dew, The badgers, the deer, and the pigeons too, Listen to the creatures, hear their refrain, protect the green fields and let nature remain!
Jonni searched online and discovered a famous eco-warrior who also believed in preserving nature.
Fernanda Fern was known for chaining herself to private jets. She was tired of being lectured to by people who used aeroplanes much more than she did.
Here is the text that Jonni sent to her:
Jonni: Wld u support me savin my parents' green field?
Wendy: I’m in Aus rn
Jonni: Can’t u fly back? ✈
Wendy: No, chained 2 a celeb's jet atm.
Jonni: Can’t they gve u a lift?
Wendy: No, not ethical.
Jonni: Ok, just an idea
Wendy: Been here 2 days, makin a show of the celeb
Jonni: Heard u chained urself 2 the wrong jet last wk
Jonni: The wrong jet
Wendy: Is that online?
Jonni: YouTube classic
Wendy: Great!Just great!
Jonni: I’m sure the planet will be ok
Jonni: Keep doing your thing, Wendy! You’re like an eco-superhero!
Wendy: And you’re like the green guardian of your field! Good luck! ☘
Jonni then went to see a famous lawyer called Sir Charles Ledger, who had a pet fox called Otis. He gave Jonni a list of other countries that love their green fields.
Here is a short list:
Switzerland: Has laws that limit the number of developments and protects its green spaces.
The Netherlands: The Netherlands has planning policies that concentrate on city development and protecting natural land.
Germany: Regions like Bavaria protect greenfields through laws which prevent unnecessary development on rural lands.
France: Laws prohibit urban expansion onto agricultural land and ensure that greenfields are saved for future generations.
Jonni realised he was not alone; people in many countries were trying to save their green fields.
A few days later, Jonni returned to the field and began playing Brian Hay’s song to see if he could stop the diggers. One digger stopped…
But I was only because one of the drivers was Jonni’s friend Bill, who brought out his guitar and played along.
The next day, Jonni brought his electric guitar and played as loud as he could to scare the diggers away.
But the workmen who brought more diggers wore ear defenders and could not hear that racket he was making!
New drivers would arrive the next day, and the digging would begin…
Jonni Greenbelt had tried everything he could to save his parents’ field. But it had not worked.
Now, the diggers would begin digging and ruin the field he loved. It was time to ask for more help…
Jonni went to see his sister Katherine, who told him about the rare species of butterflies that lived in the field:
The Orange Queen
The Autumn Knight
The Blue Quinten
Jonni went to bed and thought about the rare butterflies and how frail and beautiful nature can be.
He fell asleep dreaming about a squadron of Blue Quentins…
The following day, Jonni and his sister Katherine visited the green field with their dogs - Spinner and Jenny.
When they got to the field, they saw an incredible sight: An Orange Queen butterfly had landed on the helmet of one of the drivers…
Then an Autumn Knight butterfly landed on the helmet of another driver…
Then the Blue Quintens arrived, and the diggers suddenly had to stop!
Because the butterflies were a protected species, it was impossible to build on the Jonni’s parents green field.
Dulcie Jones was forced to build on a brownfield site several miles away, and Hectaire and Grabber even built her a medical centre. Good Job!
Long live green fields everywhere!
