Young by Name Lights – Camera - Inaction Passport – check. Tickets – check. Currency – check. Camera – er, no, actually. These days, I don’t even possess a camera, having transferred my photographic loyalties to my smartphone, for several reasons. Firstly, it means one thing less to carry. Secondly, it means one thing less to remember. (Always good news once you get to a certain age.) Thirdly, as if by magic, the photos from my smartphone are automatically uploaded to cloud storage, so I don’t even have to do anything to get them onto my computer. The downside is that I now have a vast number of photos up there in the ether that I’ve completely lost track of. Even so, I still snap everything in sight when I’m on holiday, because it’s free and easy to do. What a change from my childhood, when I had one of those new-fangled Instamatic cameras. Remember them? The film came

in an easy-to-load drop-in cartridge, so you no longer had to feed it into a spool inside your camera in a darkened room. It was the most democratising development (if you’ll excuse the pun) since the introduction of the Box Brownie, making photography more accessible and affordable for the untechnical masses. If you needed a flash, you popped a little cube on the top of the camera containing four bulbs, burning your fingers when you removed it after use. Well, one must suffer for art.

instead of postcards (Sob! How I mourn for that endangered species!), but I’ll be making a conscious effort not to spend so much time snapping holiday shots. After all, just as the pictures on the radio are better than on TV, the memories stored in your head will always be superior to your holiday snaps.

Latter-Day Rationing

www.authordebbieyoung.com @DebbieYoungBN Young By Name, a compilation of all Debbie Young’s columns from 2010 to 2015 are now available in book form, both paperback (ISBN 9781911223030) and ebook.

The only big decisions were whether to choose film for slides or for prints – slides were a big thing in those days, and I had a small battery-lit box on which to view them - and whether to opt for twelve pictures, twenty-four, or, if you were feeling really extravagant, because processing costs were in proportion to the number of pictures, an extravagant thirty-six picture film. On a pocket-money budget, I’d eke out one film for a holiday, rationing myself to a picture or two a day. Occasionally I’d have spare pictures to take when I got home. Films came with use-by dates, after which they’d start to degrade, so sometimes there’d be a mad rush to take the last few shots before a film expired.

Wherever you’re spending your summer holiday this year, I wish you a wonderful three-dimensional time. Debbie Young

To my daughter, such limitations seem laughably quaint, but I wouldn’t mind returning to that style of photography. These days, it’s too easy to end up viewing half your holiday through your smartphone screen, self-imposing tunnel vision, and missing out on the third dimension. So this summer, while I’ll still be taking my smartphone on holiday to send texts

Dear Readers, As many of you will know, Tetbury Lions has been in existence for nearly 43 years and today it is one of the largest and most successful Lion’s Clubs in our region. This is due not only to the energy and commitment of the members but also to the concept that a new President is appointed every year on 1st July who brings with him, or her, his own energy and ideas for the year ahead.

and organisations is probably second to none and as a comparative “youngster”, his energy and leadership has had a significant impact, both within the Club and in the town which we serve. Not only has he been an excellent leader but he has also found time to be the Editor of the Tetbury Advertiser which, on its own, is a very demanding role. It was therefore very fitting that he should be President when the Club received a “Queens Award for Voluntary Service”.

Last year Tetbury Lions was fortunate that Richard Smith took the President’s role. As a local, his knowledge of local people

Tetbury’s famous “Woolsack” day came at the end of May, too late for Richard to cover in his piece for the June edition of the

Lion’s Den Advertiser, so let me say a word of thanks to all those who either helped to run the Lions Stand or contributed in other ways - and in particular our sincere thanks to Em Reeves, who danced around for hours dressed in our new Lion outfit as “Albert”, which is not only very hot, but has a very heavy head! Several hundred pounds were raised towards our “service” funds – and Albert will be around during the rest of the summer, supporting our tombola stand at The Summer Show and at various other fairs and fetes.

One particularly special element during the coming Lion’s year is the celebration of the Centenary of the Worldwide Lions Organisation which was founded on 17th June 1917 in Chicago. June next year then, will be an important milestone for our Organisation which now has well over one million members worldwide. Every Lions Club has been asked to do something special to celebrate the Centenary and we have looked at the possibility of replacing the little blue van which has been available in Tetbury to carry a wheel-chair passenger and a carer in addition to the driver. However, we have been surprised how seldom this facility appeared to be used and we need to know whether there is currently a need for such a vehicle in Tetbury.

Peter O’Loughlin Ltd

If you feel there is a real need for such a facility please let me, or another Lion, know as soon as possible.

Avening Primary School A few more weeks to go! With only weeks left until the end of the academic year, things have been busier than ever at Avening School. Pupils from Y5/6 had a fantastic time on their residential trip to Minehead Adventure Centre last month. After leaving in a rush of anticipation and excitement, they spent three fun-filled days on high ropes, teambuilding, learning archery and fencing, as well as spending time on the beautiful beach. The excitement for the Owls doesn’t stop there. The class are off to the Fairford Air Tattoo at the beginning of July, where two pupils will be presenting their engineering to a panel of judges. They may be a few years off their residential trip yet, but the Eagles class had an outing of their own with a trip to Copsegrove Farm, near Bisley, last month, where the children joined in with forest school activities and enjoyed being in the great outdoors.

The end of June also saw the opportunity for our talented musicians to take to the stage in our wonderful annual Musical Soirée – quite simply a symphony of violin, piano, guitar, percussion and tuneful voices. Our choirs and musicians enchanted their audience with their performances. As usual, sports activities and fixtures have been dominating the diary with the children taking part in many cluster events including a very soggy District Sports at Sir William Romney’s School! Looking ahead to the last few weeks of term, we have our annual sports morning, closely followed by our whole school sponsored walk and an Avening Olympics, organised by the children. Our pre-school sessions, Fledglings, have taken place in our beautiful school grounds this term, with lots of den-building and playing in the mud kitchen. The children and parents have also been able to visit and borrow books from our wonderful school library.

As always, this is a time for sad goodbyes as our Year 6 children move on to their various secondary schools. They have been a fantastic group of children and we will miss them all. We also wish Mrs Maidment, our school cook, and Mrs Pope, our school cleaner, all the very best as they move on and we thank them both for their contributions to the school over the past few years. Finally, we wish all of our friends in the community a very happy summer with plenty of sunshine! Avening Primary School

It feels like our theme for July is “All Creatures Great and Small!” For the first time, St Marys’ Church Summer Fete will include a dog show. I don’t know what the categories are yet, but how about: “Most Appealing Expression”, “the Dog who looks most like it’s Owner” or “Dog you would most like to Take Home”? Everyone is invited to come along on Saturday 16th July, 2-5pm, whether you bring a pouch or not! The Fete is held in the Vicarage garden and has a lovely English feel – with stalls and cream teas, music and special attractions for children. And before that we have our Animal Service at Beverston at 11.15am on Sunday 3rd July. I love the church being filled with 250208– JS Painters Decorators animals especially when&the dogs join in

with the hymns. So do bring your beloved pets to church, to ask for God’s blessing on them. It’s always a riot – and a lot of fun. As well as our furry friends, I wanted to mention an appeal from Bishop Rachel. As you know, she is the new Bishop of Gloucester, and she wants to hear our views. As a diocese, Gloucester is committed to building church communities that worship together, share our Christian faith and values, provide a visible presence in every community and serve the wider world. Now Bishop Rachel wants to hear how we take that work forward. She wants to hear your views on the Church of England in your local community, and how the Church can contribute to realising your hopes and vision for this community. Do send me an email if you would like us to include your views in the feedback (poppy_hughes@ 22/2/08 22:20 Page 1 hotmail.co.uk).

Success and Service At Car Care we’ve been maintaining many types of vehicles from Tetbury and the surrounding area for a very long time - and we’re very pleased to have our hard work recognised for the second time in four years by the Motor Trader magazine for our expertise and levels of service. Since winning the Regional award for the “Best Independent Garage of the Year” back in 2012, we’d been giving the competition a miss for a while, but we’re delighted to say that having decided to compete once again, we’ve managed to reach the finals in this year’s 2016 competition.

2016 This is a massive achievement which really can’t be over-stated - and it’s all the more spectacular when you bear in mind the very large number of independent garages there are operating in the United Kingdom. And we have reached the last six! We would like to thank all our customers and staff for helping us to achieve this wonderful feat, and for their continuing support.

1986

And while were celebrating we also need to give a very big “Thank You!” to Alan Bailey, who marked 30 years of service at Car Care (Tetbury) this month. At a personal level, that’s probably an even bigger achievement. Well done Alan!

Probus One Fighter Aces Thoughts might jump immediately to the Australian airmen buried at Leighterton, however, David Sweet from Purton Probus restricted his subject to some outstanding pilots of the first World War when he talked to us on the 5th of May. Denis Cartwright has reported our speaker’s comments that in the second World War an American airman became an ace if he shot down five enemy planes. But the achievements of pilots in the earlier war were more spectacular, with totals of 44, 59 and 76 for some allied flyers. Baron von Richthofen, flying his red Fokker tri-plane, destroyed 80. Even Hermann Goering, later Hitler’s Reichsmarshall, scored 25. Yet even in that terrible war there was some chivalry; Goering shot down one of ours, saw that the pilot had survived, landed in the field next to the crashed plane, and expressed his appreciation of the skill and daring of his vanquished foe by handing him his own Blue Max decoration.

Different conflicts were rife in Rome’s lawless unrest in the early 14th Century. Charles Rees explained on the 19th of May how, despite strong disagreements between the previous Pope and the King of France about the nature and extent of

their respective powers, and partly for selfpreservation, Pope Clement V moved the papal capital to Avignon in 1309. This was part of the Holy Roman Empire. The lifestyle there became more akin to that of Babylonian princes than of spiritual leaders. Charles summarised the strengths, weaknesses and influences of the following seven popes (all French). He described how although French influence steadily increased within the papal system, antagonism also grew within the Church to the Pope’s continuing residence in Avignon. Pope Gregory XI, elected in 1370, returned the papacy to Rome in 1377, but according to Charles, subsequently wished he hadn’t. Those who disagreed with the move elected an ‘alternative’ (or ‘anti’) pope to the vacant Avignon seat – a situation which prevailed for forty years. It was a well-researched account with a wealth of information.

Then back to the skies on the 2nd of June, when Paul Hickley explained how RAF teams operated Vulcan bombers on Quick Reaction Alert during the Cold War. A team member from 1966 to 1974, he described the successive development of three versions of this distinctive aircraft which flew close to the speed of sound at heights up to sixty thousand feet. Each had five aircrew; their responsibilities and the way they responded rapidly to alerts was made clear. At any time at least nine Vulcans were always ready for action.

Tetbury Camera Club The annual exhibition by the Club took place as usual on Woolsack Day, in the Market House. It takes quite a lot of effort to set up the stands and mount the prints for the exhibition so that it was very gratifying that the exhibitions of the Club, and that of the History of Tetbury Society at the rear of the hall, were attended by nearly 500 visitors. A number of prospective new members also made themselves known during the exhibition. Formal meetings of the Club have now ceased for the Summer break but some members continue to meet on Tuesdays for a chat at the Priory Inn and visits to local venues. The first meeting off the next season will be on 6 September. The programme for 2016/17 will be available on the website within a couple of weeks and promises to provide a mix of entertaining and stimulating talks by visiting speakers interspersed with competitions and in house events. One of the entries into the internal competitions last year, Cirencester Roofs, is reproduced here.

Our annual dinner was held early in May and a large number of members and guests enjoyed a good meal at the Priory Inn. The dinner was followed by the presentation of trophies for the year by Club President, Vince Pycroft. The next meeting comprised a walk around Chalford, with, of course, the taking of photographs of anything which took the fancy of the participants. Once the light

had deteriorated, we had a convivial meal at the Crown Inn at Frampton Mansell. A selection of the images taken at Chalford, submitted on a non-competitive basis, were projected at the following meeting. It was illuminating that, although there were of course some duplicate images of some subjects, the variation in subject matter was nevertheless quite considerable. This was followed by a few members, selected by Carole Mortimer, explaining why they had taken their respective competition winning images earlier in the season and how they had been processed in their choice of software. This proved to be a fascinating glimpse into the very personal methods adopted.

If you wish to improve your photographic skills (or just enjoy looking at pictures) why not come along to a meeting? Please feel free to visit as a guest at some of our meetings and see what goes on, hopefully with a view to becoming a member. Tetbury Camera Club meets at 7.30 pm on Tuesday evenings at the Priory Inn, Tetbury. We are a very friendly group and anybody with an interest in photography will be very welcome to visit and get an idea of our activities and meet club members. Tetbury Music Festival Thursday 29th September – Sunday 2nd October, Parish Church of St Marys’, Tetbury The Festival is now in its 14th year; each year brings some new initiatives and some old favourites. This year we’re delighted to announce a series of lectures that complements the artistic programme. We welcome back the Schubert Ensemble to the Festival with the beautiful quintets of Fauré and Brahms as well as a Schumann oddity written for the now virtually extinct pedal piano and rescued with an arrangement by composers David Matthews and Orlando Jopling. We are also delighted to welcome the Chiaroscuro Quartet, founded by Alina Ibragimova when she was a student at the Royal College of Music. The quartet has garnered a celebrated reputation for its

excellent interpretations of the 18th and 19th century repertoire on gut strings. An afternoon lecture on period performance given by Margaret Faultless (director of Historically Informed Performance at the Royal Academy of Music) precedes the Quartet’s concert. Saturday evening brings the very welcome return of our first Artistic Director, the cellist Steven Isserlis, for what will undoubtedly be another of his sold-out concerts, this year with the pianist Olli Mustonen. Steven plays a Stradivarius cello, and the lecture on Saturday afternoon is by Toby Faber, author of Stradivarius’s Genius. For thirty years, the Choir of the Age of

Enlightenment has been applauded for its performances with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. We are honoured to be the first Festival to have secured the Choir on its own, for an a cappella concert of choral works spanning six centuries. We are also very pleased to announce a free concert celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Parkhouse Organ Scholarships, a unique Tetbury institution which has nurtured a number of talented young musicians. We look forward to seeing you at the 2016 Festival and sharing this wonderful music with you! Tetbury Music Festival

Another open space in the town which we are responsible for is Coombers Mead Gardens on London Road and some of you may have noticed that we have recently replaced one of the old seats. Please stop and have a rest and enjoy the gardens next time you are passing that way.

Recently, someone has been purposely opening and then padlocking open the ‘Livestock Control’ gate. I appeal to whoever it is to please stop this practice. This livestock control gate is in place to ensure that any livestock in Preston Park cannot escape along the Railway Line into the car park and ultimately the town,

Priory Inn Blog “Oh, the summer night, has a smile of light and she sits on a sapphire throne...”

Barry Cornwall

The produce that we are now able to enjoy using in our kitchen has a delicious taste of summer – strawberries galore from polytunnels at Over Farm and Barter-atthe-Back-Door gooseberries for perfect sauces and chutneys. Baby beets, carrots, chard, radishes, spring greens, tomatoes and onions are also coming through and baby potatoes from Paget’s Farm in Bromham. A particularly favourite pizza combines strawberries, basil, caramelised red onion and delicious Brinkworth Blue cheese from Brinkworth Dairy. A taste sensation! Our mozzarella-making friends - the Godsells in Stonehouse, enjoyed no interruption in high milk yields when their cows first tasted grass this year, as there has been so much to eat! Swathes of local grassland have been mown following vigorous growth and the resulting energyrich silage, is stored away in preparation for the winter months.

Our bees have again seasonally swarmed - their dramatic way of doubling a population. The Queen leaves her hive, taking a swarm of workers with her and leaving the remainder to feed royal jelly to a developing larva, cleverly creating a new Queen. As a beekeeper, your hope is that you can tempt the swarm into a new hive! Their home at Adeline Farm, just a few miles away in Long Newnton is perfect for bees. We buy lots of fresh produce from Ros Holland’s pride and joy which has fruit trees, allotments, young flowering crops, rows of flowers and polytunnels filled with fresh produce, making it a perfect home for these amazing creatures. Live music continues through July and August to a chilled Sunday night atmosphere: Blind River Scare play on the 3rd followed by Teri Bramah on the 10th. On the 17th July, Henry Bateman shares his slot with a Norweigan duo called Sincerely Frank. The 24th July belongs to Dik Cadbury and is followed by his old mate Steve Degutis on the 31st. The first two weeks in August are yet to be filled (check website for updates) and on the 21st Iron Oak play, with Chris Webb rounding out the month.

Unsung Hero Dear Editor, I should like to nominate Liz Maisey as this month’s “Unsung Hero.” Liz has contributed to our community in many ways. She has been Tetbury NCT membership secretary and joint Nearly New Sale coordinator, helping to raise thousands of pounds to support parents in the community and nationally. She’s also helped to run the local Beavers group as an assistant leader. In November 2013 Liz joined the board of governors at St Mary’s Primary school, taking on the role of Chair in March 2015. This is a demanding voluntary role which requires much time and energy; not an easy task with two young children and her work as an accountant! Liz is passionate and works very hard with the school’s leadership team, the board of Governors and the parents to make the school the best it can be. Nothing is ever too much trouble for Liz and she is always there to help when she can. For her continued commitment to the school and the children of Tetbury, I believe she deserves this nomination.

Amazingly we have found ourselves in the final half term of this academic year and finally we have had some sunshine. Hooray! We have a very busy term planned with lots of dates for your diaries. This term we have managed to look after 5 caterpillars and see them transform into butterflies (we even watched one emerge from its chrysalis) before releasing them in the garden - which was great fun. We are very busy preparing the Pre-schoolers for their transition to big School in September and have some transition sessions to link up with the local Primary School, as well as a Parents evening

in June to discuss transition reports. We are very much looking forward to the teddy bears picnic at the School where we will get to link up with all the children from local preschool settings also due to start in September. We even had a visit from the teachers who dressed up and joined in the fun - the children were very impressed. As a final treat we are taking the Preschoolers on a trip to go Bananas followed by lunch and a train ride back to Kemble on Monday 18th July. On Tuesday 19th July we have a presentation morning to give out folders an certificates - tissues at the ready! To finish the term we have a party on Friday 22nd July - then feet up phew. On Friday 30th June we are doing a sponsored walk around the gardens come rain or shine - all are welcome to join us, the children love using this area and it is a great way for parents to see the space we

St Mary’s Playgroup use. We are raising money towards a new mud kitchen and more outdoor resources. Next Friday we are looking forward to celebrating our amazing dads by having some of them in to playschool for a Father’s Day treat of bacon rolls, a cup of tea and possibly a gift or two. We look forward to seeing as many dads, grandads and uncles as can make it. To enable us to stay up to date and to apply new approaches staff have had a busy time with training recently, particularly focussing on communication, language and helping those with special educational needs. Our popular Toddler group, which is part of the Tetbury alliance group, will continue every Monday morning, term time at Christchurch from 09.30-11.30 and is run by our lovely mum Kelly Price. Kelly is also one of our playgroup assistants and her ‘familiar face’ for the children who come up to us from this session helps them settle quickly too. We always arrange a seasonal craft activity during the session and here are plenty of toys and games for all ages and abilities. Everyone is welcome, from babies to pre-schoolers so drop in and join in the fun. Please visit our new website www.stmarysplaygrouptetbury.co.uk or call 01666 503777 to learn more about us or with enquiries, we are always happy to hear from you. Vikki Morris, Committee Secretary

Tetbury Summer Show Judging by the way the schedules have been flying off the counter at Tetbury Hardware, we are in for another bumper Summer Show on Sunday 14th August. If we run out of hard copies you will be able to download all the information you need from our web page www.tetburysummershow.co.uk Please submit all completed entry forms to the collection point in Tetbury Hardware, by noon on Thursday 11th August. Also a final reminder that all cups awarded in 2015 must be returned by 1st July and there is a choice of three addresses to which these should be delivered, details are contained in the schedule. On show day, bring all your floral, baking and craft exhibits to the large marquee on the recreation ground between 7.30 am and 10.00 am as the marquee will close at this time for judging to get underway. While a number of new categories have been introduced this year, many old favourites draw high level of interest, this is very evident in the children’s section. In particular, the garden on a plate and an animal made from fruit or vegetable allow for a great deal of creativity and are a delight to see. If all the family want to get

involved then building a scarecrow is for you and we have two categories this year, both adult and child. The show has grown significantly in recent years and now offers many family attractions and one of these, the Fun Dog Show which gets underway at 2.00 pm draws a huge crowd. This event, as usual sponsored by the George Veterinary Group, attracts around 100 entries and these will once again be judged by our local Vet, Cyril. As usual, all dogs must be kept on a lead at all times and owners will be required to clean up after their pets if necessary. Craft stalls is another growth area and we already have a good number of stall holders signed up providing a range of very individual crafts and services from far and wide. However, given the size of the recreation ground we can accommodate more so if there are any local producers

who wish to have a stall, please call Ken on 01666 504189 for further details. One of the more recent enhancements to the show has been the introduction of the parade from Market Place, through the town arriving at the show ground at 1.00 pm. While highways restrictions mean this cannot be a large parade, it is certainly colourful and noisy being led by the City of Bristol Pipes and Drums. There will be several new attractions this year and while some arrangements are yet to be finalised we are very optimistic of securing a carnival element as negotiations are underway with the organisers of the Art Couture Painswick Festival taking place on Sunday 17th July. This is an extraordinary festival of wearable art; it is hoped that a link with Tetbury will add a “Notting Hill” element to the Summer Show parade for you to enjoy. Summer Show Committee

Tetbury Art Society Firstly, I must apologise that there has not been a report in the last two issues of the Tetbury Advertiser. The May article seems to have disappeared down a black hole in the internet and I was too busy to write the June article. So I have some catching up to do!

At our meeting on 6th April, Val Riddler gave a demonstration using mixed media. The first stage was to paint the coastal scene using watercolour paints on the primed surface but leaving the detail to the second stage. Once the first stage was complete and the paint had dried, Val started the second stage –building up the image using pastel sticks Over the long Early May Bank Holiday weekend, we held our Spring Exhibition in the Tetbury Market Hall. It was arranged by Gill Ashley and Jenny Riley. An innovation this year was demonstrations and the picture shows Barry Barnes doing a

watercolour. The raffle of a picture kindly given to us by artist Christine Russell raised £157.00 to be shared between Tetbury Hospital and Longfield. On Wednesday 4th May, Chris Jones demonstrated the painting of an owl in acrylics. He started by using mars black paint for under-painting the darker areas and then the grey areas, such as the shading round the body of the owl, were painted in watered-down black to give a black-and-white picture. The second stage was to rework the background areas with more black varied with other colours. Then the owl itself was painted and now white could be mixed in to lighten colours. Finally, white was used to add highlights. The first Wednesday evening of June saw us bringing in our own paintings to work on at St Michael’s Hall. In July we look forward to a visit to Art in Action near Oxford. Then we have our August Exhibition over the bank holiday weekend and we plan to fit in some outdoor painting and possibly a social in August too. Information on the Society’s activities can be found on our website www. tetburyartsociety.org.uk or phone me on 01666-502909 or Barry Barnes on 01666503926. You will find that we are a friendly group welcoming those interested in art whatever level they have reached. Michael Kingham Tetbury Art Society

Our Needlework group has been very productive recently; the ladies have made heart shaped cushions which are used to ease the pain after surgery for breast cancer. These were donated to the RUH Bath where one of our members has been cared for. They have also been knitting Twiddlemuffs designed to calm restless hands for those with dementia - for Gloucestershire Carers. The latest project is the knitting of reindeer for the Westonbirt Charities Fair in October. At our June meeting our speaker was Julie Nicholson. Her daughter was killed in the 7/7 terrorist bombings in London and Julie described how this tragic event has changed her life. Our members were visibly moved by her honest account of her grief and the emotional challenges she faced. She has been rebuilding her life since then. As I write, we are looking forward to our Group Meeting where we shall be joined for supper by Avening WI and Kemble and Ewen WI. There is a lot of activity going into preparation for this evening - especially the food! On July 2nd we shall be selling tea and cakes at the Town Crier event in the Dolphins Hall and our monthly coffee is at 10.30 am in the Snooty Fox on July 25th. The monthly meeting is on 11th July when Mary Day will be talking about Silks. We meet at the Dolphins Hall and our talk starts at 7.30 p m - visitors welcome! Chris Gibson Tetbury WI

we finished with tea and cake, we had a brief introduction to the history of the house and were then able to look round it at our own pace. It’s a mixture of old and new, private and public, commercial and rural.

Travels with my Aunt

Next the coach took us to Bridgnorth Station where the train buffs had time to admire the rolling stock before we were transported by steam train to Kidderminster - more beautiful scenery, our enjoyment of which was enhanced by an excellent commentary by one of the volunteers on this Heritage line. Our first really heavy rain fell as we were returning to Tetbury, but it had all but stopped as we arrived home. Our warmest thanks to Lin Ashby for planning the trip - and even organising the weather which enabled us to enjoy it all the more!

This play written by Graham Greene and performed at the charming Malvern Festival Theatre, is unusual to say the least! It features four actors assuming the identity of over twenty characters in an ever-changing and rapid sequence of events, requiring great concentration on the part of the audience to follow the plot. The principal characters, Henry Pilling and his Aunt Augusta, are involved with a host of individuals including hippies, war criminals and smugglers, and their travels take them to Paris, Istanbul and Paraguay in a variety of dubious situations. The four actors, Richard Earl, David Partridge, Jack Holland and Katherine Senior, each very well known in their own right. put on a superb performance in what represents in each case, a challenging role. Overall, perhaps a unique experience for most of the audience. Many thanks to Neville Copley for providing this review. Now, “variety is the spice of life”, so they say, so our trip in June was not to a theatre

but was a most enjoyable day out. On a day when the weather forecast was dire, we left Tetbury behind and drove through glorious countryside to Dudmaston Hall, near Bridgnorth in Shropshire. This is a National Trust property which has been in the same family for 875 years. After coffee and biscuits, we enjoyed guided tours of the gardens and then enjoyed a delicious light lunch together in the Orchard Tearoom. As

We have two events in July, to see ‘Watership Down’ at Newbury and ‘Smooth Summer Classics’, a concert by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, in Malvern, but there will not be a trip in August. We are looking forward to seeing ‘Relatively Speaking’ in Oxford, ‘French Without Tears’ in Cheltenham and ‘Billy Elliot’ in Bristol in the future. Thank you to everyone who supported our Book Sale! We raised a wonderful £380, which will be used to support Guiding in Tetbury, however, without more volunteer leaders we may be unable to offer a full programme to all our current girls, and we will be unable to offer places to those on the waiting lists. Some of our leaders have already doubled up and are running more than one unit to make sure they don’t have to close but this can’t continue indefinitely! With everyone leading ever busier lives it can be hard to find time to volunteer, but the benefits of volunteering are enormous not only to you, but to your family and your community, as it can give you an opportunity to practice and develop your social skills and has been proven to be good for both mental and physical health. We welcome adults with any or no experience, just a willingness to be involved is all you need. If you would like to visit any of our units, please contact me. I am pleased to have been able to present Jasmine with her five-year service award and Trixie with a ten-year award and plans are going well for a very special day that will take place in the grounds of Westonbirt School in September. We are holding a Jamboree for all members of both Girlguiding and Scouting in Tetbury and will be welcoming a very special guest!

Congratulations to Brownie Daisy and Guide Amalie who won the badge design competition, prizes will also go to Brownies Yana and Heidi and Guides Leah and Lucy who were runners up. Now comes the fun bit of getting the badges made up ready to give to everyone who attends what is going to be a fun afternoon. All three Guide units are attending a joint District camp in the summer holidays and we hope that the Brownies will be able to visit us for an afternoon of Olympic fun. Cecil the Caterpillar may even put in an appearance at the evening camp fire!

Girlguiding The Malt House Renovation committee are working hard to raise funds to improve and update our meeting place and I do urge you to support them whenever you can. Raffle tickets are on sale and Chavenage House are very kindly donating the ticket price of a tea and tour special afternoon on Thursday 7th July. NCT

we need support to help raise funds, run nearly new sales and events throughout the year.

Happy 60th Birthday NCT! On the 4th of May 1956 the National Childbirth Association was founded by Prunella Briance to help educate expectant mothers about the anatomy and physiology of pregnancy and birth. Five years later the National Childbirth Association achieved charitable status and became the National Childbirth Trust. From a small advert placed in a newspaper in 1956 to a highly acclaimed charity with over 100,000 members and 300 volunteer run branches the NCT has become a household name.

From breastfeeding in public to helping ban the use of BPA in baby bottles, the NCT has been there for 60 years as the reliable “third partner,” providing essential advice and help along the way. If you would like more information on the NCT visit our website www.nct.org.uk or e-mail tetbury@ nct.org.uk Gwen Hobson Branch Co-ordinator, Tetbury NCT

Tetbury branch is a small but essential part of the community with a Bumps and Babies coffee morning, NCT nearly new sales and parties occurring throughout the year. Many mums and dads can feel apprehensive in the first few weeks, or even months, after childbirth! These events get people together to have a chat, gain advice and make new friends; many friendships that are made go well beyond the first 1000 days because of the NCT. Recently parents who have met at coffee mornings or parties have formed quiz teams and even a skittles team (no previous experience required). However, without volunteers our small branch has been in danger of closing,

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, Many thanks to the Tetbury Lions for the further donation made to the Tetbury Footpaths Group to help them print more Walks brochures. We now have four new walks in a new format on sale at the Information Centre, St. Mary’s Church and The Yellow Lighted Bookshop, and hope to produce another eight once we have the finance. The contribution is very much appreciated - we hope people will enjoy following the routes we have devised in our lovely area. Helen Price, Chairman Dear Editor On behalf of St Mary’s Monday Club, I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all the visitors and local people who came to Tetbury for our Woolsack Races on the 30th May. We had a bottle stall by the Town Hall which was a huge success. The amount we raised for our Club totalled £300.50p and we are indebted to all our members, their families and our friends (including some local traders) who so generously gave bottles for our stall. Our club is held at St Mary’s Day Centre every Monday, excluding August and we are run solely by volunteers. Our members total 17, which is a full house for us. They get involved in many activities and outings, including quite challenging projects. Those of you who have visited Tetbury Hospital will see our members’ mosaic butterflies on the wall outside the hospital. We cannot thank enough those who help us, including Tetbury Lions, the Feoffees, Tetbury Flower Show, Tetbury Town Council, St Mary’s Church, the Bingo Sessions held at the Centre, Tetbury Ladies Luncheon Club, Community Connexions volunteer drivers and many other individuals (you

know who you are!).

Dear Editor,

As volunteers we are proud to be associated with such a successful club with such lovely members.

Since we all know that exercise is good for us, we should do more of it! We offer a therapeutic swim of one hour (not a “learn how to swim” class, but an exercise session) at Cirencester Leisure centre every Tuesday from 4.30 to 5.30. Transport by bus is free.

Yvonne Bossy, Secretary Dear Editor, One afternoon a few weeks ago whilst out walking I fell heavily in Herd Lane. It was my good fortune that Lisa Marie Duffy of the Royal Oak Public House saw me and scooped me up to rush me first to Cirencester Hospital and then on to Gloucester Royal. Further, she was kind enough to contact my family and wait with me until sure I was in good hands, before darting back to Tetbury for the Oak’s evening opening. All this, when she’d probably been looking forward to a few hours break for herself before getting back to work. My heartfelt thanks to Lisa Marie for her unselfish act of kindness to a complete stranger. She is indeed a Good Samaritan! Louise Booth

Anyone interested in joining us, please ring me, Ros, on 01666 502629. Dear Editor, I’d like to thank Tetbury Lions for their donation towards the cost of the steel bars around the outside Performance Area at the Goods Shed. With your help we were able to finish the job so that it was ready for a ribbon-cutting ceremony by the Mayor on the Wacky Races Bank Holiday. The Tetbury Rail Lands Trust are very grateful for your support. Yours sincerely, William Cook Tetbury Rail Lands Regeneration Trust

Holiday@Home 2016 – our 12th Year The Holiday@Home project is organised and run by Churches Together in Tetbury (TACT), and is now very well established. This is a simple idea to provide a one-day holiday for, usually, those more elderly members of our town unlikely to have a main holiday, either because of age or disability. The project is run over two days in August, so nearly 30 guests on each day will have the chance for a ‘day out’ – but in Tetbury! This year Holiday@Home will be on Thursday 18th and Friday 19th August.

The holiday starts with guests arriving at Christ Church in The Chipping, or being picked up at their own home by car or mini-bus if they are not mobile enough. Following a welcome drink, the day continues with activities and table games, or just a chance to chat. Photo displays of times past provide the start of plenty of memories and conversation. We usually have a good sing at some point, some of the old songs are never forgotten – and lunch and afternoon tea. Various other entertainments and Time for Thought carry on through the day, until the carriages (well the modern equivalent) are called again

We look forward to bringing colour and cleanliness back to your favourite floor coverings. Contemporary or traditional, large or small, piled or flat woven, hand knotted or tufted, shaggy or sheepskin, wool or silk – your rug will be cleaned using the right tools and techniques for the job. You can drop off or we can collect by appointment and either way you're very welcome to visit, discuss your requirements, and see us in action. 01453 836400 mail@rugcleaningworks.co.uk www.rugcleaningworks.co.uk Unit 11 Nailsworth Mills Estate Avening Road Nailsworth Stroud GL6 0BS

Holiday at Home and guests are taken home (with a ‘goody’ bag) at the end of the afternoon. This year the dates are right in the middle of the Rio Olympics – so guess what our theme will be! Any suggestions for activities……? Any photos of Tetbury residents with sporting achievements from by-gone years would be really interesting. It does help to stir the memory banks and promotes good conversation about ‘The Old days….’ Do you have any photos you could lend us for those couple of days please? The project is staffed by nearly 50 volunteers and the whole day is provided FREE to all our 60 guests. This is due largely to the generous sponsorship of the project by Tetbury Feoffees - and we have been grateful for other, and private, donations as well. We really do appreciate all the donations and support. As a result of generosity this year, we were able to put on transport to a Spring Cream Tea for 60 at The Mayfield, Crudwell on the 21st April – the actual day of The Queen’s 90th birthday. A good afternoon was had by all – including one of the group who also had a birthday on that day – but hers was a 95th birthday! If you have the name of someone who you think would like to be invited, please contact Allan or Jenny Norwood (01666 – 504075, e-mail: aandj@mailcan.co.uk ) who are compiling the list. For more information, or photos, please contact: Brian & Sue Cook : 54 The Street, Didmarton, Glos. GL9 1DS, or e-mail bacwoodb@aol.com.

Habitat for Humanity Chris Cox, a site manager at Miller Homes is set to travel to Malawi after volunteering to take part in Habitat for Humanity’s Global Village Trip. The trip takes place from 18th-25th September in Salima, Malawi, and will involve the Miller Homes team taking part in a homebuilding project to create new ‘Habitat Homes’ for orphans and vulnerable children. Habitat for Humanity is the housebuilder’s nominated charity for 2016 and over the course of the year Miller Homes has pledged to raise £100K for the charity’s ‘Hope Builders’ campaign - enough to build over 30 ‘Habitat Homes’ and make a real difference to those living in poverty housing. Over sixty members of the Miller Homes team put themselves forward for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity – and sixteen candidates were lucky enough to be selected to go. (Due to the quantity and quality of applications received, the

number of volunteers participating in the trip was increased from an initial twelve.) The trip is being funded entirely by Miller Homes, however each of the volunteers has pledged to raise a minimum of £1,000 as part of their contribution toward the £100K target. Chris said: “I’ve always involved myself in charity work so I knew as soon as this opportunity came up that it was ideal for me. I’m very passionate about housebuilding here and it’s something I’ve always wanted to help with abroad. This trip will make a real difference to families in Malawi so it will be incredibly rewarding. We take what we build and deliver for granted, not realising others struggle around the world every day without a roof over their head. I am already planning on visiting the communities we work with

in a few years’ time, to see how their new homes have helped them. This would be one of the best experiences in my life.’’ Volunteers will witness first-hand how a safe and secure home can benefit many aspects of life for the immediate family and wider community. The families which will be helped by Habitat for Humanity’s Global Village Trips are selected based on their housing need and income. They will partner with Miller Homes volunteers by participating in the construction of their own home. Manuela Campbell, Head of Volunteering and Supporter Services at Habitat for Humanity GB, said: “Miller Homes understand the importance of a safe and affordable home and are a perfect partner for us. Building alongside families around the world is a great privilege and we are looking forward to working with the Miller Homes volunteer team to restore independence to families and communities in Salima.” For more information on Habitat for Humanity go to www.habitatforhumanity.org.uk

Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations The Queen’s Birthday celebration moved under the Market Hall to escape the threatened bad weather – and the sun shone all afternoon! All the tables were full, rousing choruses of “Rule Britannia” and “God Save the Queen” were sung, and the sandwiches and bubbly went down very well. Thanks are due to Merlin Antiques, the Feoffees, DJ & Sweet Lightning, the Tetbury Tourist Group, the Tourist Information Centre, The Tetbury Rail Lands Trust, Hobbs House Bakery and Tesco for their generous donations and hands-on help. Particular thanks are due to Valley Trading – and to Winstone’s for their wonderful Red, White and Blue ice cream. Delicious!

Cotswold Voluntary Wardens Stone Walls Dry stone walls are a feature of the Cotswold countryside and the Wardens have tackled a number of wall repair jobs recently. One was a section of the boundary wall to King’s Stanley recreation ground, which had collapsed. We completed the repair. Another collapsed wall was part of the boundary to Cam churchyard. This had necessitated closure of a footpath. These stones were seriously large and heavy, about ten times the size of what we would typically find around Tetbury. It was definitely a two-man job to lift each stone into position – then take a breather while the next pair of men lift the next stone. Having completed the job in the morning so that the footpath could re-open, we were then ready for a pint of beer! We look forward to one of our next walling jobs being in Tetbury.

Mystery Stone Another walling rebuild was near Ampney Crucis and here a lovely old traditional stone slab stile marked the start of a footpath from the lane, but the wall either side had collapsed, endangering the stile. In moving the fallen stone back into the wall, we discovered the top edge of a truly massive stone – about seven feet long. What could it be? It was too big for a milestone. Could it be a boundary stone, used to mark the division between parishes, or perhaps estate ownership? Bearing in mind that the site was on Akeman Street,

one of the many Roman roads (like the Fosse Way and Ermin Street) which radiate from Cirencester, we wondered could it be of Roman origin? Or perhaps it could be even older, the top of a lintel from the entrance to a buried Stone Age long barrow? The Gloucester County Archivist is going to investigate.

We’ve also used brush cutters to clear a footpath heading upwards from Hillesley village which again afford magnificent views across the Severn Vale. Lastly, we’ve erected a footbridge across a stream to replace a rotten one at a farm near Wotton.

Wild Flowers

Local walks, which are circular, lead by the Wardens in July and August are:

We have had two more sessions continuing to clear trees, saplings, scrub and bramble from Brackenbury Ditches – the ramparts of an iron age hill fort on the Cotswold Way above Wotton-under-Edge. This is a long-term project to reveal the fortifications and open up the views which the defenders would have enjoyed from the escarpment. Meanwhile, it was good to see bluebells and primroses now flowering in the areas which we cleared last year.

Escarpment Views We’ve done several jobs on the Cotswold Escarpment recently, and this always offers us magnificent views to enjoy across the Severn Vale. This was recognised long ago with a defensive line of forts dating back to the Iron Age. We have been carrying out more clearance to reveal the ramparts and to open up the views at Brackenbury Ditches, near Wotton. Even earlier, from the Stone Age, there are several long barrows on the escarpment. The National Trust has agreed to open a permissive path from the Cotswold Way to the long barrow near Newark Park, so the Wardens are installing a stile for access and rebuilding the adjacent wall. We have also cleared accumulated vegetation from the long barrow.

Scam Awareness Month Cold calls, high-pressure sales tactics and automated voicemails asking for people’s details are just some of the tricks scammers are using to rob people of their hard earned money. Citizen’s Advice, alongside Trading Standards, is launching Scams Awareness Month on 1st July to help stop people falling prey to scams by following a threestep rule: get advice, report it, tell others about it.

Fraud victims pay a heavy price, losing billions of pounds every year. Scams targeting people by phone or post alone cost people in the UK an estimated UK £5 billion each year. Informing the authorities and warning others is the only sure fire way of stopping scams, but people can be hesitant to even tell their friends and family.

This is precisely what happened to Peter who came for advice recently about dealing with investments after the death of his daughter. Peter said “I was looking to make the most of my money to ensure a secure future for my grandchildren. A company with very persistent online advertising seemed to be offering a better return than standard investments at stock market rates. But, having invested a few hundred pounds to test it out, I felt very pressured to increase this to £3,000, which I couldn’t really afford.” More sinister was a second incident which Peter believes is related. Peter explained “Soon after this, I received a phone call, supposedly from Microsoft Technical Department, saying I had a fraudulent license. I gave them permission to access my PC to check, where they were able to gain access to all my banking details which were still on the PC from my previous dealings with the investment company. I later discovered multiple payments for a new Microsoft Licenses had been taken from my bank account. I believe there was some connection between these two

Throughout this month Citizens Advice will be highlighting how speaking up about scams is key to getting them closed down, and how to go about reporting suspected fraud to the authorities. Sally Pickering, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice in the Stroud and Cotswold Districts said: “Scams come in a variety of guises and we see new ones emerging all the time. However, there are common hallmarks to every scam and we’re keen to show people what to look out for so they don’t fall prey to a fraudster.”

scams, so that my bank details could be acquired.” With the help of his bank, Peter was able to put a stop to the scam and, having reported the incident to the Scam Fraud Service, it is now being investigated. Peter added “I am mathematically competent and have a science background so I understand risk, but I feel their advertising was designed to deceive and their sales approach was very hard to resist. If I can be caught like this, it can happen to anyone and so it’s vital that such scams are reported and investigated, as this is the only way they will be closed down.”

What to do if you have been scammed

Get advice and report it to Trading Standards through your local Citizens Advice or through the Citizens Advice consumer service on 03454 04 05 06. Eating Out Having created an opportunity for a quick midweek lunch, it was a blow to discover that our target was closed for refurbishment work. Consequently, being more pressed for time than expected, a hurried second choice was Jack Hare’s Bar in The Hare and Hounds, a place we’ve visited once or twice in the past. The car park was very full, so we were surprised to find a choice of free tables. The waiter arrived promptly with menus and to take our drinks order and we settled down to see what took our respective fancies. There are a number of dishes in each category which, overall, makes for a wide choice, but I began to realise everything appeared the same as last time – except for the specials board, which only offered a soup, anyway; something about the silkfinish laminated menus themselves, for me, carried the suggestion of ‘stock menu’… And then there was the ‘wide choice’ itself, recalling a piece I’d read recently: the broader the menu, the less likely that everything is cooked fresh… Anyway, starters were garlic, chilli, lemon and parsley marinated grilled tiger prawns

!

which, unexpectedly, were served on a toasted pitta, and crispy paprika squid and tomato relish, both of which were tasty, but both had their issues. To begin with, the prawns were surely too small to be tiger prawns – more like the standard ones bagged for your freezer - added to which it was clear that they’d been over-cooked. I’m not convinced it was under a grill; the dressing didn’t taste much like the one advertised, either. At £9.50 a portion, I reckon all that raises questions about value for money. As for the squid, it had just reached the ‘rubbery’ point of over-cooking, whilst at the same time – paradoxically - not being remotely crispy (also pre-prepared, from a bag, I suspect) and the relish was a tomato-y mayo. Like I say, they tasted okay, but, well… ho hum.

sesame-seeded burger bun’ and for ‘hand cut chips’ read ‘standard French fries’. The burger itself was perhaps a little dry, she said, but it was definitely ‘enhanced’ by the addition of the dill and relish. I’m not saying everything was terrible since it wasn’t (and the beer was great) - and I’m sure their Beaufort Restaurant room is classier, but it was a bit disappointing. And given that The Close in Tetbury is owned by the same group, I think I know which one I’d rather go to next time… Fill

Next, I had chicken caesar salad, anchovies, parmesan, croutons, boiled egg and baby gem: nice anchovies and dressing, a wellcooked soft boiled egg, crispy fresh lettuce, rather too many crunchy croutons… Actually, this was pretty good…oh, except for the chicken, which was bone dry and tasted a bit too much of the bitter scorching. But, hey, apart from that… Flossy bucked her usual trend by choosing a chickpea, spinach and feta burger, which, according to the menu, should’ve been served with ‘brioche bun, dill pickle, salad garnish, hand cut chips and relish’. However, for ‘brioche bun’ read ‘standard

Tetbury Community Choir we are starting to plan some informal performances. On 10th June We performed for residents of Ilsom House care home in Tetbury, which formed part of their QEII 90th birthday celebrations. The rain held off and we sang in the garden, and we were asked to do an encore so I think it went well - they have invited us back for Christmas! We will be singing at the annual Holiday at Home event in Tetbury in August. Our repertoire is a very eclectic mix, with pop, rock, songs from musicals, classical and jazz among our vocal genres. The emphasis is always on fun and the pleasure of creating good music together! We ask that you contact us in advance if you wish to join the choir.

Tetbury Food Bank

MOBILE PAINT & POLISH The school holidays are coming up and the Food Bank will be organising a Bean Trail around the town to give children a fun thing to do in the Summer Holidays. Watch out for further information about this in the local press nearer the time. We are indebted to Eagle Plant for help in funding this initiative, which we hope will raise the profile of the Food Bank in Tetbury. School Holidays can be a particularly worrying time for those families on low incomes. In term time parents know that their children will have a meal at school whereas in the holidays they have to provide one and this can often put an additional strain on an already stretched budget. The Food Bank is there to help families like this and anyone who is finding it difficult to make ends meet and put food on the table. The Food Bank is open every Tuesday morning from 9.30 to 11 at St Mary’s Day Centre in St Mary’s Road. Free boxes of food, suitable for households of various sizes are available. Vouchers to use the service are obtainable from the schools, the doctor’s surgery, health care professionals, all the churches and the Citizens Advice Bureau. However, if you are in need but have not had a chance to obtain a voucher, don’t be put off, just come along. A friendly team of volunteers will sort it out in the first instance.

Computer Advice Windows 10 - The free upgrade… …expires on the 29th of July, so if you are not sure whether to upgrade, here is a recap of the main points:

Upgrading from Windows 7 and 8.1

If you are presently using Windows 7, then you can carry on using it until 2020. For many, if your laptop or PC is already 3 to 5 years old, then if you get another five years out of it, you will be doing pretty well.

Microsoft have stated that Windows 10 will be the final version to be released, however this does not mean that Windows 10 will run on your computer forever. Microsoft has stated that a device may not be able to receive Windows Updates in the future if the hardware is no longer supported, so Windows 10 will not have a definitive cut-off date, but a time may come when Microsoft decide not to support your particular device. Anyway, time will tell as to whether Windows 10 is a success and the changes that come along in the future are

universally welcomed. Whatever direction Microsoft decides to take Windows, are you going along for the ride! If you would like your computer cleaned, booked in for an annual service or to discuss any of the points above, do get in touch. For more information about Windows 10, including my previous articles from the Advertiser, go to my blogs on the website below. Nic – The Tetbury Computer Shop Tel: 01666 502067 mail@inghamassociates.com or go to www. tetburycomputershop.co.uk

The upgrade to Windows 10 is a major upgrade which will change many of the features within Windows, but these can be mitigated by free programs which can restore the look and feel of Windows 7 whilst having the security and future support of 10. Microsoft desktop games such as Solitaire, Spider Solitaire, Mah-jong, Chess, Minesweeper and FreeCell are not included, but I can reinstate them for you. If you are using the free Office 2010 Starter Edition, this will no longer be available and will need to be replaced. If you have Windows 8 or 8.1, then you have until 2023. However, the upgrade from Windows 8 to 10 is not so marked but will future proof your PC. I have found most upgrades go without a hitch and you will feel at home very quickly. From my own experience, most upgrades complete successfully, however drivers for sound and video can be problematic but fixable with additional software or hardware. Once 10 is installed, I would not recommend rolling back to your previous Windows version, as this usually results in even more problems. Bear in mind a few tweaks to Windows 10 can make it look much like your old version. However, before going ahead, do backup your data in case things go wrong. If you do not want Windows 10, make sure your windows update setting is NOT set to incude “Recommended Updates” – or you may find that Windows 10 installs by default!

On the 16th July 1pm to 4pm we’re holding an open afternoon as part of the tennis association Great British Tennis Weekend with some coaching, a BBQ and fun free tennis for all comers. Tennis is and should always be an inclusive sport and you would be welcome to come along whatever level

of ability from beginner to expert player and of whatever age. Our two men’s teams are now well into league tennis with some close fought matches with both wins and losses. With our growing membership we’re looking to expand to in future include women’s competitive play and hopefully matches over the winter. While some in the club love competitive play we hold club evenings on Monday’s and Wednesdays as well as Sunday mornings. These are welcoming and very a mix of social play for all and competitive tennis for those who want. Four lucky members have been allocated Wimbledon tickets – go Andy! – and closer to home the first of three annual tournaments was won by Bella and Paul – congratulations. Great success has also been had with junior coaching – offered through ADS coaching on a Saturday afternoon – 2pm to 3:30pm. Many thanks to ADS for this and we’re also keen to see what level of interest there is in the area for more opportunities to play so please be in touch if interested. By the time you read this hopefully Andy Murray will be well on the way to winning Wimbledon again. Whatever his result there, please do enjoy the summer, both on and off the court. History of Tetbury Society HOTS visited Dunkirk Mill on 2nd of June … …but members went to the old Railway Station at Nailsworth to meet Ian Mackintosh. He pointed out that passengers had to walk some distance from the town to reach the trains. The principal reason for the rail extension to Nailsworth was the goods traffic to the mills and the bacon factory at Newmarket, hence the goods terminus was nearer the town. Driving pigs through Nailsworth must have created some disruption! As we walked along the tree lined old railway track, Ian pointed out the former mill pond in the valley bottom. Approaching Dunkirk Mill, we had to turn right to join a steep path that mill-workers followed on their way to work from the

cottages in the Theescombe/Watledge area. The original road from Nailsworth to Stroud was along that side of the valley; the A46 is a turnpike built in 1746. To reach the mill we had to ‘duck’ under the low passage beneath the rail track. That led us to a brickbuilt building that is the earliest section of Dunkirk Mill. There is a reference to a mill on the site back in 1601 but it is known that this brick building was in use in 1720. Most of the mill is constructed in ashlared* Cotswold stone and was developed in stages by various owners. There are 5 ‘overshot’ waterwheels that would have driven the machinery and in 1820 a Boulton and Watt steam engine was installed. In 1829 a wool warehouse was added and this completed the mill buildings. Then there was machinery on these premises for the entire manufacture from raw wool to finished West of England Cloth. 1878 it is reported that trade is very bad and in 1889 the machinery was sold… Jane Ford and Robin Mitchell demonstrated some of the machinery to complete our visit. They set in motion one of the waterwheels, a machine for ‘raising the nap’ with teasels and one for trimming back the nap to produce the smooth finished cloth. There was a large wooden ‘fulling hammer’ but they had a model to demonstrate its operation and the modern machine that does the job more quietly. The repetitive loud banging of heavy fulling hammers for 24 hours six days of the week must have

Dunkirk Mill has been very tastefully converted into apartments with a water garden which is giving these imposing buildings a new life. The Art of Success: SWR’s Colin Davies wins Cotswold Teacher of the Year Award! Sir William Romney’s School head of art Mr. Colin Davies beat the challenges from nine other finalists to win the Cotswolds Teacher of the Year Award this month. The school’s Science teacher Mrs Julia Gibson was also a finalist in the competition, organised by the Wilts & Glos Standard newspaper. Mr. Davies (36) has been teaching at SWR for 12 years and the percentage of GCSE art students obtaining A* to C grades has been 90 percent or more for the past five years. “I’d like to thank everyone who voted for me. I was over the moon to be nominated for this award, but to win it is something very special,” he said. “SWR is such a small school at the heart of a lively Tetbury community. You know everybody and you learn what motivates

students – that is something perhaps larger schools miss out on. The school has also been judged ‘good’ by Ofsted and all the teaching staff have contributed towards that,” he added. The school’s Headteacher, Steven Mackay commented: “We are a small school and to have two teachers nominated for this award is a real honour. Mr. Davies is an exceptional teacher and many students pick up art at GCSE level because of him!” Mr. Davies was presented with the Teacher of the Year Award by Cotswolds MP Geoffrey Clifton-Brown. He also wins a meal for two and an overnight stay at the Royal Oak in Tetbury. Sir William Romney’s School

Patient Participation Group Because the AGM was held after the submission date for The Advertiser, I am afraid I can’t report on it. However, you can read the chair’s report on the blog or in The Waiting Room Files. There were two things that featured which I would briefly like mention here. First we have expanded the PPG membership to include all of the patients in the surgery. Clearly we can’t all get around a table for a meeting, and not everyone would want to, so we have the steering committee who meet once a month and a Virtual PPG (vPPG) for those that would like to have regular updates from the surgery.

2050315

720208 Nailsworth Dom Applian

As there are so many patients and with keeping everyone’s data safe, it is not possible for the steering committee to hold the records. The whole team at the surgery are working together to make sure that the people of Tetbury get the best possible care in the fastest possible time. But they can’t do this without the support of the patients. I will be taking my trusty white board to visit groups of patients to explain this further, so let me know if you want to book me, either by email or through the surgery. Alternately you can read the blog post about this either on the internet or in the surgery. Jennifer Skillen, romneyppg@cyberbarn.org.uk www.romneyhouseppg.wordpress.com

Those that don’t have access to the internet (don’t forget you can go to the library and use their computers) will still be able to read the information in The Waiting Room Files and on the notice board. The main presentation at the AGM was about the new way that care will be delivered from the surgery. We have a great team of highly skilled people who can support the GPs, allowing the GPs to spend more time with patients with complicated and chronic illnesses. This means that who we see at the surgery will depend on why we want to see someone. So when the receptionists ask for information about what is wrong, it is just so that they can make sure that you see the right person at the right time. They don’t really want to know exactly what is wrong, they just need a brief idea so that they make sure that you get the best possible care.

I’m sure you’ve muttered “Policemen seem to be getting younger these days”. Is it an age thing or is it a fact? Well, going by the photo of some recent visitors to the museum – it’s a fact! The new old-style telephone (funded from donations) has at last been installed. It has audio playback of “callers to the police station” taken from some of our actual Cold Cases. It’s already been well received and

Tetbury Police Museum provides an additional hands-on exhibit. Talking of Cold Cases, here’s another one, courtesy of local resident Syd Mosdell.

Assault at Tetbury Dance, 1958 “It is the submission of the police that these young men from other towns went to a dance in Tetbury with the deliberate intention of creating trouble. And they did that all right!” This was said in Tetbury court yesterday by Insp. A. Finch (Cirencester) concerning charges arising from scenes at a Tetbury dance hall on December 21. Pleading guilty to assaulting and causing bodily harm to Mr Sidney G. Mosdell, secretary of the Tetbury Rifle Club, were: Donald Cound (22), builder’s labourer of 3 Long Close, Chippenham, and Leslie Henry Gadd (24), bricklayer’s labourer, of 472 Ferndale Road, Swindon. Insp. Finch said witnesses could have testified that the assault was wholly unprovoked. Mr Modsell was taking money at the door, and courteously told a young man that, by the rules of the hall, no intoxicants could be taken in. There having already occurred one incident (the subject of a charge against another young man) the police had arrived and all became quiet. Then suddenly Mr Modsell was set upon, knocked down and kicked. PS Davies rescued him and then closed the hall. Investigations at Chippenham and Swindon led to the arrest of Cound and Gadd, both of whom made statements. Neither of them had anything to say in court yesterday. Aged 18 years, Eric K. Giles, of Lower Stratton, near Swindon, was similarly charged with assaulting and causing bodily harm to Eric A. Cowley, a patron of the dance. Pleading for leniency, Mr J. E. Payne said the young man bitterly regretted having acted like a thug and hooligan. This was the first time he had been in trouble, and it was because of coming under the bad influence of men older than himself. After a lengthy consultation, the Bench decided that Cound and Gadd should both go to prison for six months, and Giles would be fined £20.

Leighterton Primary School At Leighterton Primary School we are all very sporty… …and like to take part in as many sporting activities and events as possible! We have many after school clubs which are run by parents, teachers, outside providers and by the children themselves and most of our children come to at least one of these. On Mondays the children in Years Five and Six run a Sports Leaders club where they plan activities for our children in Foundation Stage, Year One and Year Two. These activities are based on developing ball skills and simple team games. We run a Gymnastics club on Tuesdays and the children have been working on developing balances, rolls and cartwheels, individually and in groups. They put together movements and routines using the skills they have learnt. Athletics club is on Wednesdays and children throughout school work together to improve skills in a particular activity. Rounders is a very popular club that runs on Thursdays and our children all work together and encourage each other as they play. We end the week with Cricket club which is also extremely popular with girls and boys here. We also love to take part in competitions and over the last few weeks have enjoyed activities such as Kwik Cricket, Tennis and Sports Days. We work with many schools in the area to compete against each other in events such as District Sports and Area Sports and also enjoy making new friends from these schools. The children from each class also compete with children of the same age from other schools and the schools take turns to host the different year groups. It is another chance for our children to meet new friends. Opportunities to try new sports are also provided and some of our children have recently had the chance to try archery and mountain biking. One of our favourite sporting events of the year was when our whole school recently completed ‘Race for Life’. Every single person was included when we all ran a mile to raise money for Cancer Research. Many of our families came along to support us and to join in too. Some of our younger brothers and sisters completed the mile in their pushchairs and some of the older children ran a lot further as they went back to run with the younger children to encourage them when they had completed their own. We were very lucky with the weather, which was not too warm and there was a fantastic atmosphere amongst us all, especially as we were all there. If you would like to come a have a look around our school, please contact Mrs Davey in the school office on (01666) 890273 or through our website – www. leighterton.com to book a tour. Civic Society The Draft Neighbourhood Plan 2015 – 2030 This is an important summer for the town and country folk of Tetbury Town and Tetbury Upton Parish. The Draft Plan for this designated area is ready for public consultation, which is to take place in July and August. Tetbury Town Council, the designated authority, has prepared the plan in conjunction with community representatives from various resident groups and organisations which wished to take part. A steering group was formed which included myself as the representative of the Tetbury and District Civic Society. The Neighbourhood Plan when finally approved, following a referendum, has a statutory status alongside the Cotswold District Council’s Local Plan, the draft of which is also soon to be publicised. The Neighbourhood Plan gives the community direct power to develop a shared vision for the neighbourhood and deliver the sustainable development they need.

The Civic Society’s View The society has assisted in the preparation of the plan and supports its vision, objectives and policies. It is hoped that everybody will come to see and to read the plan at the publicised locations and meetings, and will express their view. However, there is one important part of the plan relating to Town Centre Traffic which the Civic Society considers disappointing and insufficiently specific. During the course of the preparation of the Neighbourhood Plan, the Town Council wisely commissioned a study of the traffic, highways and environmental problems in the Town Centre from the well-known consultants, Atkins Ltd., who in January produced an excellent evaluation report, which will be available at the Public Consultations. Taking the Atkins study into account, the Draft Neighbourhood Plan Report made particular reference to essential traffic calming methods in Long Street, which could reduce some traffic. It does not, however, specifically mention the frequently mooted and obvious probability of reducing excess and unwanted both-way traffic in Long Street, by directing it to and from the A46 via the A4135. This would involve directional sign changes and redesign of the London Road/Long Street Junction.

The topics covered are wide ranging and include housing development, recreation, open space, employment, townscape, conservation, community activities, Unless something radical (including a highways and traffic. Policies for these solution to the serious H.G.V. problem) is topics, however, must not contravene the 140208 Windows 22/2/08 22:04 1 agreedPage and programmed with the support CDC LocalClassic Plan.

of the G.C.C. Highways, the Civic Society is fearful that the traffic and environmental situation in the premier streets of the town will simply get worse and negate the plan. Roy Angell Tetbury and District Civic Society

Christ Church News A big thank you to all those who supported my walk for Christian Aid in May …

people whom I have met throughout the various churches in the town. I am really looking forward to Holiday at Home on August 18th and 19th. My final service is on Sunday the 28th of August at 10.30. I know my successor well,

since we both candidated from the same District and attended the same college! I wish Reverend Noel Sharp all the best as he begins working with the wonderful people at Christ Church. Rev Stuart Radford

…and to those who walked, sponsored, ate cream teas, and helped in any way. Twentyfive people and a dog left Nailsworth at noon and at Chavenage the group split into two, so twelve pairs of muddy boots arrived before the other thirteen pairs. We were expecting to get soaking wet, but the weather was kind, and at the time of writing between Nailsworth and Tetbury our estimate of funds raised is in the region of £1,700. For me, the star of the day was Betty Russell. Determined to finish in spite of slipping in the mud, Betty did so well! On a sadder note we have said farewell to two of our senior members, Ollie Knights, 99 and Helen Angus, 95. A number of church people worked very hard on the two May Bank Holidays serving refreshments; on Wacky Race day we raised over £260 for Winston’s Wish - and on Woolsack Day £385 for Church Funds. As my time in Tetbury draws to a close, I would like to pay tribute to some wonderful

Avening WI We had a very interesting meeting this month learning about Aromatherapy in the home. Our speaker was Liz Allen. She started her talk by telling us how she became interested in Aromatherapy and how it can be used as an alternative therapy. She then proceeded to explain the benefits of the various essential oils she had brought with her and handed round samples for us to smell, some we liked and some we didn’t! She gave us a very good tip to help in the hot weather or for hot flushes. A slice of cucumber placed on the forehead. We all tried it out and were amazed at how cooling it proved to be. We played the second round of the County Skittles competition on 7th June against Newent Lakeside WI at the Beacon Inn, Haresfield. It was an extremely close match with only one pin difference until we broke for refreshments. Unfortunately, Avening were a little too relaxed after supper and we eventually lost by 13 pins! Needless to say we had a very enjoyable evening and wish Newent good luck for the next round.

Avening Village Fete was held on the afternoon of Sunday 9th June. After a rather wet start in the morning, the sun came out and it was a beautiful afternoon. Avening WI were in charge of refreshments in the Memorial Hall and our members had done lots of baking.

Avening at the beginning of August. Members are busy planning three different walks, two miles, four miles and six miles. Walkers will be welcomed back to the Social Club for refreshments after their walk.

We had delicious cakes and scones to go with the cups of tea. It was a very busy afternoon but luckily we didn’t run out of cake!

“The Sunrise” by Victoria Hislop Savvos Papacosta dreams of a hotel empire and, with the backing of his wife’s father, August 1972 sees the opening of the Sunrise Hotel in Famagusta, Cyprus. The Sunrise is the most luxurious hotel in the resort and every detail has been planned to impress. The first year exceeds his expectations, not least due to the success of the nightclub run by his manager Markos Georgiou. However, as the profits roll in and Savvos starts on his next project, both his wife Aphroditi, and Markos feel they are not getting the credit

they deserve and gradually they are drawn together and begin an affair. Up to this point, the book seems like the usual soap opera with additional background provided by the minor characters made up of the hotel staff and guests. However, the situation changes suddenly in July 1974 when tensions between the Greek and Turkish sides of

This is very much a book of two halves and a bit more explanation of the political background to the invasion would have made the transition between the two parts easier. The invasion comes as a shock to both the characters and the reader, and both struggle to understand what is happening. Tetbury Neighbourhood Plan – your final chance to comment! Tetbury’s Neighbourhood Plan has been developing over three years, and is now ready for its final local consultation before being submitted to Cotswold District Council. Tetbury Town Council would like to know whether you support the Neighbourhood Plan, and anything you are less happy with. The Plan has policies on protecting Tetbury’s Townscape and Character and improving the Town Centre. A settlement boundary has been set, and there are no further allocations for housing, besides the planning permissions already granted. Open spaces are protected, and a new designation of “Local Green Space” is suggested for particularly important and special areas of green space. Local lettings for affordable housing are promoted, as are shared ownership schemes within affordable housing. The Tetbury Neighbourhood Plan is available for consultation during July and August, with the consultation ending on 30th August 2016. Copies of the plan, and supporting documents can be viewed at the Town Council Offices and the Library during opening hours. These documents are also available online: tetburyneighbourhoodplan.org.uk There’s a comments form available at the Town Council offices and at the Library for your responses and comments can also be made online. Please remember to let us know what you like; it helps to know about support for policies when other comments reflect policies requiring change. A paid-for feature

Great news for Tetbury, Goods Shed renovation commences!

Tetbury Town Council (TTC) and Tetbury Rail Lands Regeneration Trust (TRLRT) have commenced renovation works to the Goods Shed. After much planning and partnership work TTC and TRLRT have secured funding to commence works on the derelict Goods Shed. At an extra ordinary TTC meeting on 2 June 2016 council unanimously agreed to commence works on the Goods Shed. Stonewood builders have been appointed as the main contractor and will commence works week commencing 6 June 2016 . The project has been designed by Clark & Maslin who will also be project managing the works throughout. With much hard work and proven support for the project from local people the council as owners of the building believe the project will be fantastic for both local people and visitors to Tetbury. The Goods Shed will provide a venue for the arts and welcome many performances, exhibitions and workshops. The Goods Shed works will be completed by Christmas 2016. The Mayor of Tetbury Cllr Stephen Hirst said: “At last the Goods Shed is on the move, there’s a great sense of satisfaction, the project will create a fantastic community asset. Tetbury will receive a huge amount of benefit.”

Left to right – Cllr Stephen Hirst (Mayor of Tetbury), Cllr Kevin Painter (Deputy Mayor of Tetbury), William Cook (Chair Of Tetbury Rail Lands Regeneration Trust), Matt Aitkenhead (Managing Director Stonewood), Ian Maslin (Director Clark and Maslin) and Mike Hopkins (Contracts Manager Stonewood).

The Deputy Mayor of Tetbury Cllr Kevin Painter said: “This is a truly amazing day and testimony to what people can achieve.” Will Cook Chair of Tetbury Rail Lands Regeneration Trust said: “Today is a momentous landmark in our scheme to transform the derelict Goods Shed into an art and culture hub for our community. I would like to thank the people of this town for believing in this project and supporting us. Most of all I commend the spirit of the amazing Goods Shed team who have given 200% and our Tetbury Town Council because together we have made it happen. Full steam ahead!” A paid-for feature
