ell what a year! There have been lots of changes for us and 2015 seems to have passed by in a bit of a blur, yet when we look at how much we have packed into this year we are pretty astonished…

We have developed H&N (we are Here and Now), into a lifestyle magazine that has doubled in size and also increased its editorial content to make it more current and interesting. EAT! (Everything About Taste), our dining guide has been introduced as a great bible for the best places to dine out and keep you abreast of food and drink trends, and we finish the year with our very own dining awards. You can see the results, as voted by you, our readers and Facebook and Twitter followers in this edition. Congratulations to everyone that was nominated and extra congratulations to the winners. Then there was the celebration of achieving 10 years in business with a fabulous Charity Ball, held in the marquee at The Stansfield Arms in Apperley Bridge. This was our very first charity ball and we were so nervous that tickets and tables might not sell, but guess what? It was a sell out and we raised thousands of pounds for two very special local independent charities! The great news is that we were inundated with people wanting to book tables for our next charity ball and so we have booked Saturday 19th November, again in the marquee at The Stansfield Arms as the venue was amazing and everyone there made sure the evening was a resounding success, a huge thank you to them for looking after us so well. Due to popular demand, tickets are on sale now for the next one. You can see lots of photos from the ball in this edition. So on to what else is in this edition, the final one for 2015…well, we focus on men! Yes, we thought maybe we had not given you males the attention you deserve so within these pages you can read all about men’s fashion, men’s health, there’s male grooming tips and we also profile a couple of successful local businessmen who are truly inspirational. Here at ‘Team H&N’ we think this is our best edition yet! We really hope you agree and enjoy reading and re-reading over the holiday period. So that just leaves me to say on behalf of the whole team; thank you, have a brilliant, safe Christmas and New Year and until next time…

KING KARL Written by Lorraine Pitman

It can’t be disputed that karl lagerfeld is a creative genius. The german born designer is truly unstoppable as he leads the way at the forefront of the fashion world heading up not just one, But three labels as creative director. Without fail, every collection he oversees at chanel, fendi and his own brand is a success and it leaves us wondering exactly what it is that the 83 year old eats for breakfast! His dedication to work is unrivalled and finally this November we will see him honoured for his contribution to the industry as he receives the Outstanding Achievement accolade at the British Fashion Awards. When asked why it was decided the award would this year go to Lagerfeld, the chair of the British Fashion Council 6 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

explained "Karl defines outstanding. He is the champion of excellence, the master of the exceptional and one of the most iconic figures globally from our industry. His life's work for his own and so many extraordinary brands, has written the language of fashion. He is the ultimate visionary and we celebrate not only the decades already passed but those yet to happen. In Karl's hands the future of fashion will be an exceptional one." So what made him the great designer he is today? We take a retrospective look at Karl’s defining moments and how he became worthy of his fashion crown. His first experience in couture fashion was in 1955 when he beat over 200,000 entrants to win the International Woolmark Prize aged just 21. The competition in which he designed the winning coat went on to be made by Pierre Balmain who he then ended up working for as an assistant for 3 years. He promptly left when he was offered the job of art director at French fashion house Jean Patou explaining, ‘he wasn’t born to be an assistant’. Lagerfeld believed fashion in the late 50’s and early 60’s to be easy and for a man that currently designs 7 collections annually for Chanel alone, it must have been frustrating to have only been producing 60 dresses a year. In the early ‘60s he began to realize that French couture was slowing and that the future of fashion laid elsewhere. In 1964 he began working as a freelancer for Chloe and it was here that he first became internationally recognized for his debut spring wear collection under the label. The trademarks of the designer we know and love developed as he began to push boundaries and excelled with innovative designs. Success and international acclaim at Chloe meant he was soon offered a design

role at Fendi where he created not only clothing lines, but fur and accessory collections too. Karl’s curious mind and forward thinking work soon sky rocketed Fendi high into the fashion ranks. Famed particularly for revolutionizing fur, in 1965 he coined the term ‘fun furs’ which came to represent the double-F logo synonymous with Fendi today. He decided that fur should be treated like any other material and through doing things that had never been done before such as removing the lining, moulding and redesigning; fur was reborn. By the ’80s Karl had become a major star in the fashion world and in 1983 he quit Chloe to take over at Chanel as chief designer. At the time Chanel was struggling and people thought he would bring about his own demise taking on what was a dying fashion house. However, for Karl it was this challenge that made the offer so appealing. He flourished under the pressure and did what few thought was possible; brought the label back to life. By keeping the brands iconic patterns and motifs but experimenting with fabrics and styles, he dragged Chanel kicking and screaming back to the forefront of fashion. Under his guidance Chanel went on to become the most profitable house of the ’90s. Lagerfeld’s ability to reinvent himself and the fashion houses he overseas is one of the things that makes him so successful. He his undoubtedly a forward thinker and lives for the future. Always looking to new technology and manufacturing processes he is able to create new fabrics and designs and also to revolutionize old ones. He was still creating controversy earlier this year when he closed the final day of haute couture shows in Paris with a Fendi collection dedicated entirely to fur, renamed by Karl as ‘Haute Fourrure’. Much like in the ‘60s, he showcased fur as it had never been seen before with models donning fur skirts, handbags and even cocktail dresses. Inspiring as ever and a fitting way to celebrate his 50th year as the head of Fendi. In his own words Karl wants his fashion legacy to be as a ‘one man multinational fashion phenomenon’. We don’t think he’ll have a problem with that.

orn from the mirth of popular culture, Elvis Jesus has built its reputation as a clothing brand dedicated to producing fine quality clothes with humour, panache and inescapable messages within the design.

Named after the cult pulp fiction novel ‘Elvis, Jesus, and Coca Cola’, inspiration for the brand grew from the story within the pages. Fulfilling the stereotype of the typical American beatnik, irreverent, voyeuristic and undeniably raw around the edges, the book’s anti-hero Kinky Friedman embodies the unique joie de vie that drives Elvis Jesus as a brand. Inspired by the literature and films dedicated to society’s rebels, Elvis Jesus grew from the ground up, an operation that began with one collection bundled into the boot of a car, freewheeling the country for a foot in the door, to filling the shelves of some of the most exclusive stores around the globe. The surroundings may have changed, but the journey of Elvis Jesus has never betrayed our roots in beautiful, individual and challenging clothes for men and women. Designs have an undeniably in-yourface attitude, but are laced with a hint of the irony that fans of Elvis Jesus have become well versed in. Pastiche and humour work alongside the street art influences that have developed within the T-shirt collections, which today have grown to include knitwear, leather and jersey. Remaining integral to the design ethos and heart of Elvis Jesus, embellishment of all kinds adorn the T-shirts, layering and

building with rivets, beading and embroidery. Each garment is built from a classic design but given an Elvis Jesus slant; whether it be fashion, political or social comment the time is taken to step outside the box and look from a new perspective. Before the recession hit designers were holed away, already designing their preemptive response. Beyond a brand, Elvis Jesus has become a way of life. Each piece is subject to a meticulous design process, from the very beginnings of brainstorming amongst the close knit team to hand drawing the graphics that will eventually appear on the garments. No stage is complete until all are satisfied that the end product is not only remarkable, but unique. Rejecting the onedimensional revolving door of season to season trends, Elvis Jesus builds every collection on the strengths of their heritage as a premium clothing brand with a loyal and passionate fan base. Music remains a key influence with the exploration through genres, from jazz to bluegrass, via a dalliance with house and, of course, the homage to rock and roll stalwarts of past and present. For the future Elvis Jesus show no signs of slowing; each new collection is accompanied by an inhouse film embodying the aesthetic of the pieces and new lines add depth and range to the brand. Intent on maintaining the same dynamism and originality that provided the impetus over a decade ago, Elvis Jesus remains true to the same cut-throat humour and design detail that has carried the brand to the world stage today.

MAN ABOUT

TOWN IMAGE COURTESY OF HUMANS OF LEEDS

DUE TO THE RISE OF SOCIAL MEDIA, PUBLIC RELATIONS (PR) HAS BECOME AN EVEN MORE PROMISING AND IN-DEMAND CAREER CHOICE AND SKILL. WE WANTED TO DISCOVER A LITTLE MORE ABOUT IT SO WHO BETTER TO ASK THAN LEEDS VERY OWN ‘MAN ABOUT TOWN’ JORDAN ODU, DIRECTOR OF PG & HL PR – AND OUR VERY FIRST PORT OF CALL FOR THE LOW DOWN ON WHAT’S HAPPENING IN AND AROUND LEEDS, IF HE DOESN’T KNOW ABOUT IT, IT’S PROBABLY NOT WORTH KNOWING ABOUT ANYWAY…. So Jordan, tell us about PG & HL, what does your job actually entail? PG & HL is a collaboration between Pink Gorilla and Hairy Lemon. We are a full service agency offering marketing, events, PR and promotional services specialising in the lifestyle sector. Whether it be the launch of a new bar or restaurant, arranging promotional staff for a high street retailer, putting together a themed event or Christmas party – we offer it all! We have recently launched Pink Gorilla Promotions which is a specific arm to the business that promotes offers, events and services to our network of 47k people living in Leeds What does public relations actually mean? Public relations is all about being the voice for a brand or organisation. We communicate with press and media getting the word out about a brand and basically get the city buzzing about a new launch or product. This also includes networking and knowing the right people to create maximum awareness for a client.

COCKTAILS IN THE CITY

Why is it important? It’s very important to get the name out there and let as many people as possible know what that brand has to offer. We work with big name brands and also smaller companies who need help with launching new bars, restaurants or products in Leeds as we probably have the best network in the city. How did you get into this line of work? My background has always been working in promotions and in the lifestyle sector. My first ‘proper’ job was marketing manager for Revolution which was a great experience and provided me with knowledge and training to set up my own business. I then set up Pink Gorilla in 2008 and Revolution became my first client, from there the business naturally grew and other bars and restaurants requested promotional services. I then met my business partner, Deborah De Vittoris creator of Hairy Lemon, in 2010 we joined forces as we both worked in the same sector but offered different services, it seemed like a natural progression and as a result have now created a full service agency. Describe a typical day at work No day is ever the same! One day we will be arranging the launch of a new venue like our current project working on The Hedonist Project, from booking promotional teams for brands such as Topshop or MINI to turning on Christmas lights in shopping centres with the characters from Frozen. Along with hosting events for clients we also take care of the marketing and PR side of things which means coming up with creative and distinctive ideas and dealing with press and media on a daily basis. What’s the most challenging part of your job? I think one of the major challenges is dealing with the vast variety of our clients and responding to their needs quickly and creatively. It’s a very fast moving market place and our clients expect us to respond quickly.

Also, working for yourself is a big challenge in itself, I have to stay motivated every day, if I don’t deliver I don’t get paid. Going out a lot, dare I say it, is also a massive challenge, having to attend social events most nights and remaining upbeat after working a 10 hour day can be quiet tiring at times And the biggest perk? The biggest perk has to be the fact that I love what I do. I also get to meet great and interesting people, I get invited to great places and although I work incredibly hard I also get to experience some amazing things. Can you tell us a little about some of your clients? We work with a wide range of clients from national renowned corporate brands such as Topshop, Mulberry, Leeds City Council and Lookers to small independents such as Bar Soba, Stockdales of Yorkshire, Roxy Lanes and The Hedonist Project. Where do you expect to be in 10 years’ time? I still want to be doing what I’m doing now but grow the business further so we can perhaps have the success we’ve had in Leeds in other cities in the UK. I always work and have a very hands on role in the business, I’m a long way off retirement!

enswear is going through some exciting times. Historically slow moving and arguably never quite as progressive as its female counterpart, it can seem somewhat archaic, but things are changing! There’s a real buzz about mens fashion at the moment. The barriers between specific styles are being broken down and we are beginning to see different elements brought together and working like never before. It’s not uncommon to see anything from sharp tailoring through to streetwear being paired perfectly as one ensemble and it’s this art of pulling together a plethora of mismatch styles that’s creating a menswear revolution. However, creating such an outfit is surely no mean feat? It takes skill and a keen eye but we have heard of one man that undoubtedly nails it every morning. Enter Nickelson Wooster.

Nick Wooster or ‘Woostgod’ to his fans, is a mens style icon who is thriving in this eclectic fashion environment. Credited by GQ as ‘the alpha male of American street style’ we think it’s safe to say he’s the man to look to for style inspiration. Infamous for his sharply tailored blazers, preened white moustache and rock n’ roll tattoos; it’s not suprising he has over half a million wannabee Woosters following him on Instagram. But what gave this guys the right to be so devastatingly cool? The short answer is decades of high end retail experience and a natural eye for fashion. We take a look at why this guy has got both the style AND the substance. Nick’s impressive work history explains a lot. Buyer for Barneys and Bergdorf Goodman, director of retail at Calvin Klein, design director at Ralph Lauren, fashion director at Neiman Marcus, consultant for Thom Browne and Gilt Groupe. The impressive list of big fashion names goes on as he has endlessly flitted between companies and the positions within them throughout his career. He is a self proclaimed ‘free agent’, not only a ‘street style person’ (something which bemuses him still), but also a retailer and design consultant. In fact it seems anything he decides to turn his hand to is a success. Now aged 55, he works on a consultative basis for many major brands such as Lardini, United Arrows, Cadillac and Greats to name but a few. The man undoubtedly has an eye for what works and this clearly transcends through to his own personal style. He describes himself as an amalgamator; taking things that don’t necessarily go together and making them work. 10 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

So in this new world of eclectic mens fashion what can we learn from the man to whom it comes so naturally? We take a look at a few Wooster trademarks and tips. Price need not be an issue. Even though Nick has typically worked within high end fashion, it doesn’t dictate what he buys. He can wear anything from Thom Browne to J Crew and still look spot on and that’s because he selects items because he loves them. When he makes a purchase he explains that ‘it has to come from the inside’ so it really doesn’t matter to him if it’s £1000 or £50. In fact paying big bucks unnecessarily just for the sake of a brand name is a bug bare he feels strongly about. Nick believes many people ‘feel that if they spend thousands of dollars on something they’re somehow going to be better dressed. When the reality is, you don’t have to spend billions’. Uniqlo is one of his favourite brands in terms of both its quality and lower price point making it more accessible to everybody. Consider colour carefully. It’s true that Wooster isn’t afraid to introduce a pop of colour to his ensemble, but it’s rare that he wears more than one bright at once. The majority of his wardrobe consists of fairly neutral grey, white, navy, khaki, olive and black with accent colours such as yellow, green and pink. When he does make a bold statement with colour, he generally opts for complimentary colours. These colours sit opposite one another on the colour wheel and always work great together as they are, well, complimentary. Wooster recently stepped out wearing a navy tailored jacket and a pair of orange trousers and (obviously) it worked. Trust the colour wheel and be brave! Although not always fully suited and booted, Nick always looks smart and that’s because he likes to ‘subscribe to the notion of the sartorial mullet’. That is, keep buttoned up on your top half and less so down below. He’s infamous for his individuality in the trouser department but following this rule he never fails to pull them off. Standard for Wooster is either a pair of slim fit shorts cut above the knee or a pair of drop crotch trousers, usually brightly patterned or coloured. It’s this smart/casual trait that means he always looks super cool whilst still dressed to impress. He truly is the modern man’s style hero and one of the things we love about him the most is his modesty. He doesn’t proclaim to know everything nor does he brag about his extensive fashion knowledge, he simply professes to be a man that loves clothes. By all accounts he’s actually pretty reserved and when questioned about his social media success, he doesn’t quite get it. ‘I’m sick of myself. Aren’t you people sick of me yet?’ Well actually, we’re far from it Nick!

DIET & DEPRIVATION? NOT AT FITNESS2GLO! Let’s be honest we all find it hard to lose weight and to get fitter. There are times when we feel determined, motivated and really focussed. We look to make changes, to eat healthily and we rush to join the gym. Then something happens, life gets in the way and suddenly we find ourselves sitting on the sofa, turning to our comfort food of choice and so the cycle starts again! Does this sound familiar? It happens to most people, both men and women of all ages. Caroline Harris from Fitness2Glo can certainly empathise with this pattern, as she too has experienced the diet rollercoaster.

SHARED EXPERIENCE Caroline started running weight management and fitness classes in 2004 as a Rosemary Conley Diet & Fitness Instructor. This was a complete career change for Caroline as she was previously a Primary School teacher. However having battled with her own weight issues for years, she found that by going to a class that offered overall lifestyle advice and a great range of fitness classes made such a difference. She benefited from it so much that she then went on to train to help others too! On talking about her experience Caroline explains; “I love helping people to gain confidence through

exercise and the best part of my job is seeing the transformations that takes place. I myself have lost 3 stone by attending a weight loss and exercise class and whole-heartedly believe it is the most effective way of achieving your health and fitness goals.” However she is also realistic and is the first to tell her members it is not about depriving yourself of certain foods, it is about making healthy choices. Known for her sweet tooth Caroline knows that it is almost impossible to give up chocolate completely but there are ways of incorporating it into your diet so you are not completely depriving yourself! As we all know you always want what you can’t have!

GET MOVING! For many the thought of walking into a fitness class can seem quite daunting, especially if they haven’t done any exercise previously. When arriving at Fitness2Glo you are always guaranteed a warm welcome not only from Caroline but from all the other members too! Every class is designed to get you exercising at the right level for you. You will be encouraged to build up your exercise and fitness levels gradually so that you work at a level that is suitable for you.

FUN AND FRIENDS There has been a lot of research carried out over time in regards to the benefits of exercising with others, this is also the same in regards to eating the right food. Being part of a supportive group, having fun and going on the journey with others is key to a sustainable health improvement. This is certainly the case at Fitness2Glo classes as many members are now lifelong friends who have encouraged and supported each other to achieve optimum health and fitness. The fun and laughter continues outside the classes too as a variety of social activities take place throughout the year which include fundraising events for local and national charities. For 2016 why not break that cycle of diet and deprivation. Join a Fitness2Glo class where by combining the latest in exercise, weight management support and having fun in the process you will soon be enjoying a lifestyle of health and fitness.

At Fitness2Glo you will find a wide range of different workouts, ensuring that the five elements that we should all incorporate in our lifestyles are included; cardiovascular, stretch, flexibility, muscle strength and resistance. From aerobics to High Intensity Interval Training, from Zumba to Fitness Pilates, there is something for everyone, whatever their age or ability.

ALOE...

H&N EDITOR ANGELA RICHES DISCOVERS THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF USING FOREVER LIVING PRODUCTS Meeting Caroline Harris has had a major impact on my health in 2015 and I wanted to share with you, our readers a personal account of just how this has happened. I have always been a lover of Forever Living products and for years I have used a number of them in my day to day life because they are completely natural and effective. My favorites include Aloe Lips, the soothing properties of aloe vera, jojoba and beeswax combine to create what I believe to be the finest all-season lip product on the market today. It’s brilliant for soothing and moisturising chapped and dry lips but to be honest, I use it all year round as a lip gloss or under lipstick because it makes my lips feel so good. I have one in every handbag as I do go into panic mode if I don’t have one with me! The other one I have used for years is Aloe Ever-Shield Deodorant Stick which contains no harsh aluminum salts like other deodorants on the market. It’s super effective, glides on silky smooth and never stains clothes. In fact, most of my family have been converted to these products too as they have all had them as presents from me at some point! However, this year Caroline introduced me to C9, the nine day easy to follow cleansing programme that jump starts your overall health and weight loss, brilliant to kick start any weight management programme and also to use as I did to cleanse my system after a period of excess which resulted in me feeling constantly bloated and sluggish. I couldn’t believe how well I felt, how much energy I had and how much weight and inches I lost in a nine-day period! It was amazing and I continued to follow a ‘clean eating’ regime for weeks after, which kept the weight off and the feeling of wellbeing continued.

Fitness2Glow brand new weight management programme which is NHS approved and is no starvation diet, just common sense laid out for you day by day, it couldn’t be any easier. I’m even seriously considering trying her dance based fitness classes as they look like really good fun and Caroline is so bubbly that I know I will enjoy them. So, all of that aside. The most important changes I have experienced are major health improvements through drinking Aloe Vera Juice every morning. I decided to try this drink a good few years ago and at the time it made me feel how I can only describe as ‘generally well’. I took it for quite some time and one day realized I had run out and for whatever reason I didn’t get any more. Fast forward a few years and I suffer from Trigger Thumb in both thumbs, a very painful locking of the digits which requires regular steroid injections and if that fails shaving of the tendons to rectify the problem. I was at the latter stage and waiting for a date to have the shaving procedure when I did the C9 Cleanse, which includes taking large doses of the Aloe Gel Juice and it was like a miracle…my Trigger Thumbs disappeared! I kid you not, my hospital consultant was in awe and wanted to know more about what I had been taking, maybe Forever Living Aloe Juice will soon be available on the NHS!! So I cannot thank Caroline enough and can only say to you, call Caroline for more information on getting healthy in the New Year. There’s no way I will stop taking the Aloe Juice again and hopefully you will join me on C9 and maybe I will see you at a Fitness2Glow class for some fun fitness. I hope so.

But Christmas is just around the corner and I know there will be unavoidable situations where I will eat and drink to excess…well it’s Christmas after all! So I have made a pact with myself to start the New Year with C9 and follow it with Caroline’s hnmagazine.co.uk | 17

FIX UP LOOK SHARP

W

HEN IT COMES TO MALE GROOMING HABITS, THERE’S DEFINITELY BEEN A SHIFT IN ATTITUDE OVER THE YEARS. GONE ARE THE DAYS WHEN GUYS WOULD JUST ROLL OUT OF BED, HOP INTO THE SHOWER, AND BE OUT THE DOOR IN 5 MINUTES. NOW, THEY ROCK A SKIN CARE ROUTINE THAT WOULD PROBABLY GIVE THE AVERAGE FEMALE A RUN FOR HER MONEY. GET WITH THE PROGRAMME BY FOLLOWING OUR 12 HABITS FOR THE IMPECCABLY-GROOMED MAN... 1 | Become a regular at your barbers Book your next appointment while you’re there for roughly 4 weeks’ time, and stick to it. Too many men wait for the ‘forlorn tugging of your locks’ stage before doing anything about it. Basically, if you’ve noticed your hair needs a cut, then other people have too. The trick is to be proactive, not reactive – and having a regular place you trust will cut down on the ‘oh my God what if he messes this up’ anxiety dramatically. 2 | Know which hair products work for you Hair products for men have got a bit more confusing since the Brylcreem your Grandad swore by, so make sure you’re clued up on what each product is for. Thicker hair and messy styles can handle waxes and pomades, but if your hair’s thinner, then lighter products and sprays will give your barnet some staying power. Ask your barber if you’re a bit in the dark, but the right product can make all the difference. 3 | Find your signature scent Aftershave isn’t supposed to be loud or obvious. You don’t want people to stop in their tracks and notice (if they do, you’ve worn too much). Rather, it should become

26 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

a subtle part of your overall presence. Rather than owning 8-10 average quality bottles you pick from each morning at random, find one or two classic scents you really like and invest in them. Typically woody, spicy or herby scents suit the winter months, while lighter, citrusy scents work best in spring and summer. 4 | “Do a Dylan” with your toothbrush Two things every woman notices: your shoes, and your smile. When it comes to the latter, there is no longer any excuse for ignoring advances in technology. Electric toothbrushes are designed to do most the work for you, rotating brushes reduce 11% more plaque than manual toothbrushes, and can also significantly reduce gum problems. And while you’re at it, use a mouthwash after you brush first thing in the morning. 5 | Learn how to manscape properly Trimming your pubic is not only perfectly acceptable in 2015, it’s polite. And no, we’re not talking about the porn star look either – just aim for what you’d appreciate in a partner, i.e. keep things neat and tidy. Top tip: keep whatever device you use for this sensitive task separate from what you shave your face with. There are plenty of electric razors on the market designed for the nether region’s unique challenges without having to fill your Mach 3 with short and curlies. 6 | Scrub your face They sound decadent, they use pseudo-science (“microbeads” anyone?) but face scrubs are just textured face washes designed to get the dead skin off your face (particularly the nose, the most exposed part of your face). Use one on a Monday morning to scrub the weekend off your face, and every other day of the week go for a plain face wash that’s less abrasive. You’ll be looking better than you feel in no time. 7 | Manage your facial fuzz Unless you’re planning to move out into the wilderness to find yourself, facial hair of any length needs to be tamed and maintained if you want to be taken seriously. You don’t have to spend much on a beard trimmer, so pick one up and get into a weekly habit of tidying up.

8 | ...Or learn how to shave like an expert You might not have time in the morning for an extensive wet-shaving routine, but learning the basics of a good shave is important. Preparing your skin beforehand with a shave oil will help the razor glide over your hairs, while soaking the blades in warm water will help your pores expand, allowing the hair to come off your face with less redness and irritation. If it still feels like a chore, leave your precious face in the hands of the experts and get a professional shave once a week. 9 | Put your best feet forward They might not be on show much at this time of year, but a good foot care routine is still important. Take care of them after a bath or shower (when the skin is softest) using a pumice stone on any dead skin, before lathering a generous amount of moisturiser on. Then when summer rolls back around, you can wear your flip flops and cause an absolute minimal of disgust in others. 10 | Tackle dark circles Look, we all made our peace with moisturising years ago. But the stuff you use on your face is still too much for those patches under your eyes, where dark circles and puffiness reveal your heavy weekend and make you look under-slept and older than you are. Incorporate an eye roll-on into your morning routine to help counter the problem. 11 | Sort out stray hairs Big eyebrows aren’t a problem – see Clooney, Farrell et al – but if they’re meeting in the middle, you’ve got a problem on your hands (and face). Pay attention to the spot in the middle, and any errant hairs above and below your brows are also worth staying on top of. Plucking is time-consuming, though, so if needs be ask your barber to tidy your brows up when you’re next in. Believe us, he’s heard it before. 12 | Nail your hand-care routine Cutting your nails once a week – preferably after a bath or shower, to soften them and make them easier to trim – is basic. But that rough, flaky skin around the nail bed that somehow irritates you more than it looks like it should? Treat with a tiny bit of moisturiser every couple of days to smooth things over. And….you’re done!

The Manor House

THE WEEKENDER Moreton-in-Marsh – Gateway to the Cotswolds

The White Hart Royal

THERE IS NOTHING QUITE LIKE A WEEKEND AWAY TO BRIGHTEN UP THE SHORT DARK DAYS OF WINTER, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HEAD TO ONE OF THE PRETTIEST PARTS OF THE COUNTRY, RENOWNED FOR ITS STUNNING LANDSCAPE AND ITS STYLISH PUBS AND HOTELS WITH THEIR ROARING LOG FIRES TO WARM THE COCKLES AFTER A DAY SPENT EXPLORING. WHERE ARE WE? THE COTSWOLDS. RECOGNISED AS THE LARGEST AREA OF OUTSTANDING NATURAL BEAUTY (AONB) IN THE COUNTRY, IT OFFERS LARGE OPEN VISTAS OF UNDULATING HILLS DOTTED WITH CLUSTERS OF HONEY-COLOURED LIMESTONE TOWNS AND VILLAGES THAT BLEND EFFORTLESSLY INTO THE VERDANT LANDSCAPE. Sheep farming has long played an important role in the area: the name Cotswold is popularly attributed to a sheep enclosure (cot) on a rolling hillside (wold). With sheep farming came the wool trade, which created unimaginable riches from the Middle Ages onwards that were invested in impressive stately homes and elegant public buildings, such as market halls and churches, found throughout the area, which stretches from just south of Stratford-upon-Avon in the north to close to Bath in the south. Reaching the Cotswolds is easy: head straight south along the M1 till you hit Leicester, then take the M69 to Coventry and very soon after that you’re on the old Roman road known as the Fosse Way that takes you straight into Moreton-in-Marsh in north-eastern Gloucestershire, the largest settlement in the North Cotswolds. Moreton (as its name is shortened by the locals) has always been important due to its accessibility. 28 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

Sudeley Castle & Grounds

It first welcomed travellers when the Romans built the Fosse Way and, much later, was a key staging post on the London to Worcester coach road, hence the proliferation of historic inns in the town. These days, however, it is less well-known to visitors than the more touristy towns of Chipping Campden, Broadway and Stow-on-the-Wold, which all lie within 10 miles of Moreton. It remains very much a working town and still hosts a market every Tuesday (dating to a 1227 charter) that fills the broad, handsome High Street. Cotswold stone townhouses, many of them dating to Jacobean and Georgian times, provide an elegant backdrop to the weekly hustle and bustle. The best place to start a visit to Moreton is at the tourist information office on the High Street. There, you can pick up a free map of the town, as well as a town trail that will point out the town’s highlights, such as the 16th- century Curfew Tower, on the corner of the High Street and Oxford Street, the bell of which rang daily to remind the townspeople to "cover fire" for the night. The bell continued to be rung daily until 1860 for “curfew” purposes, after that it was used to call the fire brigade. Probably the oldest building in town, the Curfew Tower is also said to have been used as the town jail at some point in the distant past. Very close to the Curfew Tower stands The Mann Institute, which was built by Miss Edith Mann in 1891, in memory of her late father, as a working men's club with a hall, a reading room and recreation rooms, as well as a flat above that could be used by women and children from London's Canning Town Settlement for holidays. It remained as a working men's club well into the 20th century, but is now the offices of a firm of architects. Opposite the Curfew Tower, taking pride of place in Moreton, you will find the Redesdale Hall, which is not as old as you might think, having been built in 1887 in medieval style at the bequest of Algernon Bertram Freeman Mitford, aka Lord Redesdale, who owned the Batsford Estate just outside Moreton at the time and after whom it is named. Mitford was the grandfather of the famous Mitford sisters – Diana, Jessica, Unity, Nancy, Deborah and Pamela.

The Manor House

Award Winning Horse & Groom Pub

Originally, the lower part of the hall was left open to give it the appearance of a medieval market hall, but it was never used as such and was eventually filled in in the 1950s, giving it its current appearance. Today, it belongs to the town and is used by the local community for staging plays, martial arts classes, holding large town meetings and more. Wander south along the High Street (towards Stow-on-the-Wold) and you will see plenty of striking stone buildings, many of them residential properties, as well as some interesting gift shops and art galleries. Eventually, you will reach the Manor House Hotel, the only four-star hotel in town, which is housed in a beautiful 16th-century building that provides an enchanting Cotswold retreat where guests can relax in the pretty walled garden or beside a roaring log fire, depending on the season! Turn left at the Manor House Hotel into Church Street and you will find yourself in the oldest part of town, where you will find the 19th-century, Gothic-style St David’s Church as well as several picturesque 17th- and 18th-century houses including the elegant St. David's House, one of only a few buildings in town recognised by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, who documented the country’s greatest architecture. The house is close to St. David's Well which was considered to be a holy well and was used for curing sore eyes. Looping back to the High Street past the local primary school and along East Street, it’s worth popping into the White Hart Royal close to the Redesdale Hall. During the Civil War, Moreton was a centre for the Royalist cavalry and Charles I is believed to have stayed in this inn before his final march from his headquarters in Oxford in 1644 and, if it’s not occupied, the staff will be happy to show you “his” room. Otherwise, the bar, with its huge fireplace, is an atmospheric spot for a coffee or local ale. It’s not the only pub in town with an interesting history though – The Bell Inn on the opposite side of the High Street is widely acknowledged as the building on which JRR Tolkien based The Prancing Pony in The Lord of the Rings. For those who wish to get out of the town and sample a little of the rolling countryside for which the Cotswolds is renowned, there is a walk from the High Street, down Corder’s Lane and across the fields to Batsford Arboretum, which is home to one of the finest botanical collections in the country. At 56 acres in size, Batsford is an intimate and romantic place to visit, with interest all year round

Moreton-in-Marsh Toy Shop

from the first snowdrops of spring right through to the outstanding autumn colour of its acer trees in October/November. Within the Batsford grounds, you will also find the Cotswold Falconry Centre, which houses around 150 birds of prey and promotes greater understanding of birds of prey through education and fun. Over 30 separate species of these majestic creatures have been successfully bred in non-commercial breeding aviaries and some of them can be seen during the regular flying demonstrations from spring through late autumn. From the bottom of Batsford Arboretum’s drive, it’s just a short walk to two award-winning local gardens. The three-acre Bourton House Garden, surrounding a fine 18th-century Manor House, features luxuriant terraces and wide herbaceous borders with stunning plant, texture and colour combinations. The entrance to the garden is through a magnificent Grade I listed 16th-century tithe barn where you will find occasional exhibitions. Sezincote, built in 1810, is a unique and extraordinary Indian house set amidst the Cotswold hills. The architecture is in the Mogul Style of Rajasthan, with a central dome, minarets, peacock-tail windows, jali-work railings and pavilions. A curving Orangery frames the Persian Garden of Paradise with its fountain and canals. Don’t be surprised if it looks familiar: it was Sezincote that inspired the much more famous Brighton Pavilion! For such a small village (population less than 400), Bourton on the Hill is super successful. Its only pub, the Horse & Groom, is another award winner. A handsome Georgian inn at the top of the hill, it has stunning views over the North Cotswolds and is currently The Good Pub Guide 2016 Pub of the Year. Renowned for its food, though it also has five comfy rooms should you wish to stay, it’s a great place to re-charge over a local pint or delicious meal after the walk from Moreton through Batsford. Sated, it’s an easy 30- to 40-minute walk downhill from Bourton back into the centre of Moreton-in-Marsh, where it would be remiss (if you can manage it) not to enjoy a traditional afternoon cream tea in one of the town’s many cafes, before either heading home or settling into the comfort of your local hostelry, just as travellers have done for centuries. hnmagazine.co.uk | 29

HOT RIGHT NOW H&N talk to industry experts Idle Travel about the most popular 2016 holiday destinations

THERE IS SOMETHING ENDURING ABOUT THE MEDITERRANEAN – THE VARIETY OF THE RESORTS, THE WARM SEA, THE BEAUTIFUL COASTLINE,THE QUALITY OF THE LIGHT. WHETHER YOU’RE LOOKING FOR SUMMER HEAT OR GOING OFF SEASON TO ESCAPE THE CROWDS, YOU CAN FIND BUSY HOT SPOTS OR QUIET AUTHENTIC HARBOURS AND VILLAGES.

Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi peninsula, coasted in vineyards, citrus and olive groves, almond trees, oleanders, camellias and bougainvillaea, is dotted with long famous resorts including lively Sorrento, pretty Positano and the more historic town of Amalfi itself. It also makes a great hub for zipping off to islands, including Capri, visiting Pompeii and ascending Vesuvius. Favourite places to stay include the Hotel Caruso Belvedere and the Hotel Santa Caterina.

Sail the Greek Islands One of the best ways to enjoy the Greek Islands is to sail on your own boat from one to another. Novices can learn the ropes by spending the first week of their holiday ashore, then the second taking command of their yacht and sailing under the watchful but unobtrusive eyes of a flotilla lead boat.

Croatia

Croatia is one long coast of a country. When you run out of the 1,000 odd miles of mainland,

which includes handsome old Venetian towns on the Istrian Peninsula and Dubrovnik, there’s another 100 or so islands to consider (among our favourites are Korcula, Brac, Hvar and the deserted Kornati archipelago). The waters are crystal clear, although it’s true that most of the beaches are pebbly.

Cote d’Azur Its Mediterranean resorts – Cannes, Menton, Nice, Antibes, St Tropez – have long been prime spots for summering in style. But the Cote d’Azur, aside from its fancy villas, glamorous belle époque hotels and swanky yachts, can also be affordable, especially if you can avoid travelling in August, as well as far more culturally rewarding than it hedonistic reputation may suggest.

Costa Brava The northern stretch of the Costa Brava coastline, where the geography gets too torturous for big hotels and the roads too corkscrewy for coaches, is where you’ll find intimate Catalan fishing villages, beaches tucked into small coves, great food and authentic medieval hill towns. We particularly like the medieval village of Pals and its nearby sandy beaches, and the bay of Calella.

Balearics The Balearics offer some of the best Mediterranean holidays and get more visitors than any other destination in the region. Yet, turn your back on the obvious hot spots and you’ll find that the islands still offer blissfully quiet parts, interesting hotels and houses (often

converted from rural fincas), and a surprising degree of sophistication.

Or how about the best of America? California, the Golden State, is where deserts meet snow-capped mountains and scenic highways meander along rugged, sun-kissed shores. On top of all this are some magnificent national parks, which include Yosemite, Death Valley, Kings Canyon and Sequoia. Los Angeles is the home of Hollywood, with its classic sign, and also Venice Beach and Santa Monica Boardwalk. Further north up the California coast is San Francisco and its Golden Gate Bridge. There is a lot more to see besides these two great cities though: the rolling vineyards of Sonoma County and the Napa Valley, the giant redwood trees and driftwood-strewn beaches of the north, long-abandoned mining towns in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and old Western towns. Let’s not forget up and coming long haul destinations such as Vietnam and China, wonderful city breaks to Rome, Prague, Venice and Barcelona and slow lazy river cruises and the more vibrant Mediterranean cruises.

AND RELAX

WITH H&N's FAVOURITE WINTER SPA BREAKS

GRAND HOTEL KRONENHOF

THE 21ST CENTURY IS STRESSFUL. WE LEAD HECTIC LIVES WITH ENDLESS COMMITMENTS TO FAMILY, FRIENDS, WORK AND COMMUNITY. WE ARE BOMBARDED ON A DAILY BASIS BY ALERTS AND MESSAGES FROM VARIOUS ELECTRONIC GADGETS – WHETHER IT’S A SMART PHONE, IPAD, DESKTOP OR TELEVISION. AND WE FEEL PRESSURED INTO BEING BRILLIANT – TO LOOK GOOD, TO HAVE IT ALL AND DO IT ALL. SO IT IS PROBABLY NOT ENTIRELY SURPRISING THAT WHEN WE GO ON HOLIDAY, A STRONG TREND HAS DEVELOPED TO SIMPLY STOP, BREATHE AND RELAX. GONE ARE THE DAYS OF HOLIDAYS OF HIGH LEVELS OF ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION (“WE’RE ON HOLIDAY, LET’S HAVE A DRINK” … EVEN IF IT IS ONLY 11AM) AND LATE NIGHT PARTYING, WHICH SIMPLY LEAVE US CRAVING ANOTHER HOLIDAY WHEN WE RETURN HOME. 32 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

ALDER BALANCE

These days, we are more likely to seek out hotels and resorts with extensive spa facilities or dedicated retreats, so that we can give our bodies a real break, mentally and physically, so that we are better prepared to face 21st pressures when we return to work. Companies such as The Healthy Holiday Company (www. thehealthyholidaycompany.co.uk) and Healing Hotels of the World (www. healinghotelsoftheworld.com) have sprung up as a result, helping to guide as towards a trip that will suit us best – whether we decide to detox, get fit or learn meditation.Of course it’s not an entirely new concept. The ancient Romans in the centuries Before Christ were regular visitors to hot springs, though perhaps you could argue that they used them as much for their cleansing abilities and the opportunity to socialise, rather than specifically for their health benefits. Take, for example, the hot springs of Bagno Vignoni in southern Tuscany. These were visited by historic greats such as Pope Pius II and Saint Catherine of Siena in the Middle Ages, as they stood close to the pilgrimage route to Rome. Today, water from the springs is piped directly into the swimming pools of the Adler Thermae (www. adler-thermae.com/en/) resort, just a few hundred metres from Bagno Vignoni. Emerging from the spring at a temperature of 50° C, the hot waters raise the body temperature and trigger vascular dilatation that improves breathing and causes the muscles of the body to relax due to the enhanced oxygen supply. They also help reduce inflammation and have a draining effect, thanks to the minerals dissolved in the water, which makes them particularly appreciated by those who suffer from rheumatism and arthritis. What is new is the wide array of additional wellness options on offer. At Adler Thermae, aside from “taking the waters”, guests can participate in yoga weeks when high-profile teachers take up residence for intensive yoga practice, short-stay relaxation programmes that include watsu (aquatic body therapy) and abhyanga (a type of Ayurvedic massage), and get fit holidays that include guided walks and bike rides through the stunning landscape of the Val d’Orcia, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

GRAND HOTEL KRONENHOF

ALDER THERMAE

ALDER DOLOMITI

ALDER DOLOMITI

Personally, I found the rolling Tuscan hills alone to have a very calming and meditative effect, which brought to mind W H Davies’ poem Leisure: “What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare…”, summing up rather well our 21st century issues (even if it was written 100 years ago). When I wasn’t standing and staring, I was happily ensconced in an energising sunrise yoga class, chilling out (or should that be heating up?) in the sauna or afternoon napping in the relaxation room. For those who want to follow a stricter wellness path, under the supervision of medical doctors, my recommendation would be to visit sister property Adler Balance (www.adler-balance.com) in the hills of northern Italy. This is the place to go to if you want to attain permanent weight loss, detoxification, stress management and preventative medicine.

I haven’t yet managed to commit to a week-long wellness break, but I know I should. Studies have shown that the typical British adult takes four days, eight hours and 24 minutes to fully unwind on holiday, making a 7-day programme essential if we really want to free ourselves from the hassles of daily life. Perhaps the easiest way to do this would be to sign up for a dedicated programme like the Holistic Life Retreat being offered by Grand Hotel Kronenhof (www.kronenhof.com) in January and March 2016. The hotel is located in the tranquil setting of Pontresina in Switzerland’s Upper Engadine, which is probably better known as a winter sports destination. St Moritz – just a few miles from Pontresina – is one of the most famous ski resorts in the world, but it first gained recognition for its healing spas, dating back almost 3,500 years. Are you beginning to see a theme here? Fashions, as we all know, are simply cyclical.

There are three doctors in residence who offer a complete health screening, followed by supervised – and personalised – treatments according to guests’ needs, whether they be cosmetic, medical or stress-related. After my thorough check-up, I was told I needed to lose weight and that my head was extremely stressed; both of which I probably already knew, though I wouldn’t admit to, but it was reassuring to know that there was nothing more seriously wrong. As Adler Balance is a certified Mayr clinic, I was put on a modern Mayr diet, which is not as limited as the traditional diet of stale spelt bread and broth, but follows the same principles i.e. it enhances natural digestive processes. If I’d stayed longer – sadly, I was only in situ for three nights – I am sure I would have lost a significant amount of weight and would recommend that anyone who is keen to shed a few kilos stays at least a week to 10 days, if not more.

Even as (relatively) recently as the 19th century, St. Moritz was still popular among the Brits, who made the long journey over the high mountain passes to spend the entire summer enjoying a little bit of R&R in the crisp, therapeutic mountain air and glorious sunshine, while making the most of the town’s spring waters. It’s not surprising, then, that the Kronenhof has decided to return to the region’s roots and focus on spa-based vacations. The hotel’s retreat incorporates moderate movement (various yoga classes and the opportunity for gentle walks through the wooded valley), treatments that flush the body of impurities and massages that energise the body, alongside a healthy and specially designed detox diet.

Three nights was also not long enough to completely eliminate the “stress in my head”, but it certainly reduced it significantly, through a combination of gentle walks in crisp mountain air, relaxing floats in the salt grotto (in the adjoining Adler Dolomiti property, which has the largest spa facility in the region) and deep sleeps in a hotel made along organic architecture principles, from natural materials such as local wood and slate. It helped that the Balance is also a child-free zone.

The result, we’re promised, is complete rest and relaxation, cleansing of our bodies and the strengthening of our spirits, while stimulating our self-healing power. Over the week, our bodies will be detoxified, de-acidified and purged of excesses, allowing us to switch off and refuel with fresh new energy that allows both the body and spirit to breathe again. Sounds just what I need – where do I sign up? Article written by Susana Conde

o Chocolicious was truly Delici

I

t was showtime again for the pupils of The May School of Dance and Theatre Arts in Crosshills and that could only mean one thing... Excitement, energy, sparkles and lots of fun and yummy chocolate!

Thinking of a new story every two years and all of the costumes, dance routines, music and songs must be a daunting task, however Christine and her team always manage to pull it off but this year was extra special and every character was played with 100% dedication and commitment. From the tiny tots to the adult pupils, Chocolicious was awe inspiring!

This time the students were excited to be performing at a brand new venue, The Kings Hall in Ilkley, with a bigger stage and auditorium, brand new lighting and sound and this was set to be the school’s biggest and best show ever!

“We could not believe the amount of props and costumes and the quality of the production was amazing!”

Principle, Christine Goode told us, “We are excited to perform at Kings Hall Ilkley, we have over 130 students taking part, 300 costumes and there has been countless hours of rehearsing and set building. Everyone has worked tirelessly to produce a delectable, delicious and delightful show.”

Curtain up and away we go! It has to be said that Catherine Gregory as Willy Wonka was outstanding and her duet with Scarlett Hale as Charlie Bucket was effortless. The story was enchanting, the performances brilliant, the sets amazing and every detail to surprise and amaze had been thought of; right from the chocolate bar attached to the programme, it was obvious this show was going to be special.

Here’s what some of the audience had to say…

“Best dance show I have ever seen!” “May School of Dance shows get better and better, great story and amazing props!” Families have been so inspired by the show that the school has had an influx of new pupils joining the classes, especially brothers and sisters of those taking part in the show. So how will Christine and The May School of Dance top Chocolicious? Believe it or not that’s already being planned but we will have to wait until 2017 to see it. If you would like to be part of it then join The May School of Dance and Theatre Arts now!

Remade in Britain Founder Donna Fern in the ‘Skip Room’

OUT OF OLD H&N TALKS SHOP WITH DONNA FERN FROM THE UK’S FIRST DEDICATED UPCYLING WEBSITE - REMADE IN BRITAIN

Donna Fenn, founder of Remade in Britain, explains why upcycling is the interiors trend to look out for next year, as people turn away from mass-produced items and instead move towards unique, repurposed products. With the growing popularity of shows like The Great British Sewing Bee, The Great British Bake Off and The Great Pottery Throw Down, more and more people are taking up crafts and learning to make their own products rather than simply buying them off the shelves.

pages of eBay and Etsy. Remade in Britain is the first website in Britain that is completely dedicated to upcycling and we’ve seen interest boom over the year we’ve been online. We put this down to people turning against the mass production of furniture and interiors items and instead looking towards more personalised, individual items as they become bored with what the high street has to offer.

John Lewis reported a 54 per cent increase in sales of simple patterns after the first episode of The Great Sewing Bee earlier this year, showing the growing trend of people wanting to learn their own skills. The UK craft market is now valued at around £3.5billion, with upcycling estimated to account for between five and 40 per cent of this.

Upcycling is experiencing a revival as people have combined the need for thrift with the desire to start looking after our planet. Taking items which were heading for landfill and turning them into something useful and beautiful has a huge and positive impact on our environment and gives people an opportunity to really express their creativity.

The term upcycling, which is the art of repurposing unwanted items into something of higher quality and value, was coined in Germany in the early nineties and has become popular in countries including the US, Germany and Sweden. The popularity of repurposed and vintage items is most noticeable on online artist marketplaces like American-based Etsy and Artfire where products tagged with ‘upcycled’ rocketed from 7,900 in 2010 to 216,024 last year.

I’m constantly amazed at the products we see created by our retailers – who would have thought an old shopping trolley could be reused as a chair, or a motorbike part as a lamp!

We set up Remade in Britain in 2014 after hearing that many upcyclers had no platform to sell their products on and were getting lost in the

38 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

The beauty of buying or creating an upcycled product is that it is completely unique and no-one will have the same piece. Lots of our retailers make products to order and most things can be customised, ensuring no two items are the same!

Upcycling appeals to our sense of creativity and individuality, as well as offering a huge sense of satisfaction in saving items from landfill, which in turn impacts positively on the environment. It can also go some way towards tackling some of the estimated 280m tonnes of waste produced each year in the UK. Consumers have become used to throwing away unwanted items, but upcycling encourages people to think about

changing this. We are also increasingly seeing people look towards developing skills that may previously have passed down from generation to generation and this is translating into what people are buying. Our grandparents and parents were big upcyclers, born largely out of economic necessity but also out of a respect for the value of their belongings. Somewhere along the way these values have been left behind and our goods have become too easily replaceable and disposable. Many handcrafted products were made with great craftsmanship and upcycling is a great way of preserving this and giving an item a new lease of life. Since launching Remade in Britain, we’ve continued to grow and grow, with more than 300 independent businesses and retailers now selling more than 3,000 products on our site, made from everything from unwanted bathtubs to discarded wooden pallets and plastic bottles. We’ve also exhibited at the Grand Designs Live show, sharing some of our fabulous retailers’ upcycling skills with visitors, as well as hosting workshops at vintage and interiors fairs across the country. More recently, we’ve acquired Nigel’s Eco Store, the UK’s leading online eco retailer, as we look to further our commitment to encouraging people to buy environmentally friendly products rather than mass produced items. It’s a great time to be involved with not only upcycling but the crafting world in general – and we can’t wait to see what 2016 brings! THE OWL AT RODLEY, a wonderfully traditional yorkshire pub... THE OWL AT RODLEY

Dark solid wooden floors, a roaring fire with the comfiest of armchairs, the friendliest of welcomes and possibly the best home cooked food you will find in the local area…and they are child and dog friendly! What more can you ask for?

Sometimes you want to eat out and just have some great home cooked food and there’s nowhere better than The Owl at Rodley. Recently taken over by the people who ran The New Inn at Calverley for years, which they built into a destination pub for fabulous food. They then moved to The Fleece in Horsforth, doing exactly the same, gaining a strong reputation for their friendly service and great menu. Well they recently took over The Owl and as we are fairly local and frequented their other establishments, we decided to try their Steak and Grill Night one Wednesday where two can dine on steak and chips with mushrooms and garden peas plus a bottle of house wine for only £25! It was a rotten night, pouring with rain, windy and cold but the minute we walked into The Owl we felt welcome, warm and hungry – the smell of steaks cooking was mouthwatering. Word must have spread about this special night because it was pretty busy with diners for 7pm on a miserable Wednesday evening, this was a good sign. This is a big place yet seems it so intimate the way it has been designed and furnished, we love that there are defined areas and yet each area flows beautifully into the next. There’s lovely fireside comfy chairs if you just want a drink and a relaxing chat, or a large dining area for foodies. There’s even a conservatory function room that you can book for any celebrations or private dining. choice and we decided to have starters too; Tempura Prawns with a sweet chilli dip and Chef ’s Fish Cake, £3.95 each and really tasty. Other options were Chilli Cheese Nachos or Battered Chicken Goujon at just £4.95 each. As it was steak night we both chose the rump served with chips, mushrooms and garden peas with a side order of onion rings and chef ’s peppered sauce at an additional £1.50 each and well worth getting… delicious! All washed down with a bottle of very nice house red. Our steaks were cooked to perfection, we ordered medium rare. However, there are other options if you don’t want steak, you can choose from British Gammon and Eggs, Trio of Lamb Chops, Full Rack of Pork BBQ Ribs, Chicken Butterfly Breast or Double Stacked Burger. All served with sautéed mushrooms, chips and garden peas for only £9.95. You really can’t go wrong and the quality of the food is amazing. We thought if we had a rest we would be ready for pudding but the longer we sat the fuller we felt! The portion sizes are generous to say the least, making it great value for money. So we decided not to have anything else to eat, but we weren’t ready to leave as the atmosphere was so relaxing so we decided to have another couple of drinks and sit by the fire in the comfortable arm chairs. The Owl at Rodley is well and truly on the map for great food, amazing friendly service and superb value for money and it’s easy to see why their customers follow them, just like us. See you there. ox club, great value & top notch food in relaxed surroundings Remember Big Lil’s Saloon Bar? Well after closing it’s infamous doors over a decade ago, the building which was left quite literally to rot, has risen like a Phoenix from the flames as Headrow House, brainchild of the folks behind Belgrave Music Hall and comprises of a beer hall, event space, Redondo Beach Cocktail Bar on the top floor, impressive terraces and now the Ox Club... Headrow House opened it’s doors in early October, transformed from a derelict building to an impressive event space, but I’d heard through the grapevine that a restaurant was on the agenda also. Well the wait is over! Ox Club is definitely one of the most eagerly anticipated restaurant openings in Leeds this year, there has been a real buzz about it, so when I was invited to try it out I literally jumped at the chance! I had absolutely no idea what to expect from Ox Club, apart from knowing the restaurant’s concept is based around the unique inclusion of the Grillworks solid fuel grill, imported from Michigan, making it one of only three restaurants in the UK to do so - very intriguing! After being shown to our table and ordering drinks I perused the menu. This is exactly the type of menu I like - it’s concise, but I want to try every single item so that’s a flying start in my book. Our waitress advised us that they encourage sharing the menu items which I love as it means I get to try everything. With that in mind we ordered Hangar Steak with salsa verde and Bearnaise sauce, the Ox Cheek with Bacon Jam and Flageolet Beans and the Guinea Fowl from the Wood grill, and from the sides, Coal Roasted Beetroot with Muscovado Walnuts & Goats Curd and Cauliflower with Romesco Sauce, Almonds and Sherry Vinegar. The ox cheek was rich and powerful with deep flavours, the meat simply melted in the mouth, the beans provided the perfect accompaniment with the textures complimenting each other well. The guinea fowl was a lighter dish but just as flavoursome with succulent and juicy meat served on tasty polenta - a new one on me, I have never tried polenta and always assumed it would be bland but this was tasty, light and very moreish. The hangar steak -this was my favourite dish of them all! The meat perfectly cooked - quite rare but hot all the way through and served with a beautiful salsa verde which cut throught the rich meat and creamy Bearnaise sauce, a really surprising combination of flavours for me but worked so well that if, or should

I say, when, I return, that would be the dish I’d be returning for! The sides were also immense, I love beetroot so I had to order that, it was perfectly roasted with creamy goats curd and the cauliflower was sublime - unusual, but sublime all the same. You would need to try it as I can’t quite describe it....This menu is clearly well thought out but it’s also really different from anything I have eaten before in Leeds, or at all actually. The restaurant itself has a fairly industrial feel to it, but comfortable and warm at the same time, the open kitchen adds to the atmosphere and the aromas leave you hoping every dish on the pass is heading your way. It’s not flashy, but it is super cool and absolutely not pretentious whatsoever, which I may have slightly expected given the menu really does showcase a real know how in the kitchen, passion for food and a nose for sourcing and combining seriously good ingredients. Ox Club is an inviting dining space offering up a unique culinary experience and I literally could not fault a thing about the service, our waitress really knew the menu and was friendly and chatty without being intrusive - perfect. She also persuaded us (at this point we were pretty well stuffed) to try dessert which I don’t always go for. I have to wax lyrical about this a little as I was so surprised at how much I really really really loved.......PUMPKIN PIE! I don’t know about you but I do not associate pumpkin with anything but halloween, I have never cooked with it, I have never actually eaten it and I certainly have never had it in a dessert. However, it was to die for. Almost like a rich bonfire toffee taste with a carrot cake type texture. We shared a piece between two - each watching the other to make sure we got our fair share. That is how good it was! As a parting note I also want to mention what absolute value for money this restaurant is, for the food, the place and the service I would have expected to pay at least 15% more than our bill actually came to, if not a little more. So all things considered, Ox Club would come highly recommended from me and I would suggest also trying the brunch menu as it looks just as impressive as the evening offering. Bang on Ox Club, you get my vote. Reviewed by Joanne Brook-Smith December 2015 hnmagazine.co.uk | 53

San carlo south parade, chic yet authentic italian dining Situated on South Parade in the city centre, San Carlo is a large yet stylish restaurant, designed to create its own, unique atmosphere, using natural light and glass to blend contemporary and classic themes. This exciting destination features a hand carved stone bar, imported from Italy, perfect for enjoying a pre dinner drink... This day had been planned for a while. We took a Friday off work and caught the train into Leeds to do our Christmas Shopping. The train decision was because parking at this time of year is ridiculous and we always intended to finish the day with a late lunch at the amazing San Carlo on South Parade and we knew we would be in no fit state to drive afterwards! So after 3 hours of intense spending, we struggled laden down with what seemed like hundreds of bags to San Carlo and tried to make a grand entrance as sophisticated as possible, as befits this extraordinary restaurant. San Carlo is a favourite of ours for a casual yet celebrity style dining experience and although a favourite, we have never reviewed them for H&N. Were we tempting fate? Would it live up to our expectations? We would be gutted if it wasn’t as good as usual and there were lots of factors in play that could have tipped our experience the wrong way. Black Friday in Leeds being the main one, Leeds was heaving and San Carlo might be too…thank goodness we booked! Ok, grand entrance made we were greeted by the maître de as if we were old friends and when he saw the amount of bags we had he showed us to a fantastic table in the window with lots of room to store our purchases. As usual the restaurant was buzzing with the great and the good of West Yorkshire, it’s a superb place for people watching as this is definitely the place to be seen, there were also plenty of shoppers there with almost as many bags as us and we all gave each other a knowing smile. We started with a glass of pink champagne, when in San Carlo it just has to be done! We savored the champers while choosing our meal and 54 | WE ARE HERE & NOW

discussing what a successful day of shopping we’d had and this was going to be the perfect end to the day. Starters decided; I was in the mood for seafood and choose the Insalata Adriatica, a mixture of squid, prawns and mussels with garlic, extra virgin olive oil and sun blushed tomatoes, Dave decided on Avocado Diverso, avocado served with crab meat, marie rose sauce, smoked trout, horseradish and sun blushed tomatoes. Both absolutely exquisite! For our main course I continued with the seafood theme and had a San Carlo Special; Tagliolini Lobster, special pasta with lobster, brandy, tomato, cream and peas…oh my goodness, I struggle with words to express just how good this dish is! Dave went for Agnello Alla Toscana, lamb cutlets in Madeira sauce with rosemary and sun dried tomatoes. Another brilliant choice and one I will possibly have on our next visit. We decided on a rest before ordering our desserts; giving us chance to finish our bottle of Pino and do a little more people watching. By now the restaurant was in full swing and we were amazed at what a well-oiled machine their service is. The level of professionalism, attention to detail, the fun banter and all made to look so easy. Finally, we were ready for dessert, which just had to be accompanied by a delicious dessert wine (see why we got the train!). So, Panna Cotta served with fresh fruits and Classic Baked Italian Cheesecake topped everything of very nicely. What were we worried about? Sam Carlo is a must for people who appreciate fine Italian food, good service, luxurious yet comfortable surroundings and value for money; and we will add to that a brilliant all round dining experience with great people watching thrown in for good measure! Love it! Reviewed by Angela Riches December 2015

Chaophraya in Leeds, a truly special place to dine... Situated in Leeds City Centre just minutes from the train station, Chaophraya Leeds is a truly special place to dine. With a relatively newly fitted out restaurant complete with Palm Sugar Lounge and sunken seated private dining room, guests can get a true taste of Thailand complete with first class service and a bustling atmosphere. It’s a rainy Saturday evening in November and the idea of getting a cab into Leeds city centre for an evening out would under any normal circumstance be absolutely out of the question for me, however I’d been looking forward to this particular outing for weeks so armed with my brolly and a raging appetite I bundled myself and hubby into a taxi and headed for town.... Chaophraya has long set the presidence for truly stylish Thai dining in Leeds City Centre. This lavish restaurant is a feast for the eyes as well as the appetite - particularly so at this time of year, the upside down Christmas trees make a real statement. Chaophraya is certainly much ‘blingier’ than some of the other Thai offerings in the region - from the moment you see the tuk tuk ( a perfect selfie opportunity for me...) at the entrance, but that is not to say that it’s style over substance here, far from it infact as far as I’m concerned - the more bling the better! Greeted by a beautifully traditionally dressed maître de, we were shown to a poser table in the super glamourous bar area to enjoy some pre dinner drinks. The atmosphere happy and relaxed, we enjoyed a leisurely apperitif before being show to our table, a beautiful booth that I literally sunk into. Getting a decent table really matters to me - I simply hate being squashed into a corner or having my back to the whole restaurant, although it seems so well thought out here, I’m not sure that would be an issue. Chaophraya’s menu is largely made up of classic dishes originating from different regions Thailand. The menu is sizeable and sprinkled with some interesting dishes alongside staples such as red and green curries, spring rolls, steamed dumplings and of course my personal favourite Weeping Tiger. However, because I enjoy Thai food so much and there is simply so much choice we opted for a banquet basically because I’m really quite greedy but of course it offers a taste of more than one dish so I always enjoy it.

We chose the Set Maenum Yom at £35 per person. Variety is the spice of life and this set menu presents a handful of speciality Chaophraya dishes made with authentic Thai cooking methods. To start we enjoyed an enticing variety of starters (I think the amount of food we were served would certainly feed more than two hungry diners) including Pork Spare Ribs served with fresh Thai herbs and BBQ sauce, Chicken Satay served with peanut sauce, Steamed Dumplings (my favourite) literally stuffed with crab meat and chicken, spring onions and garlic and served with a sweet soy sauce dip, Prawn and Chicken Toast and finally Deep Fried Marinated Pork - yes I’m still talking ablout our starters! It was a very plentiful starter, but every single morcel was tasty and cooked well, presented beautifully and full of flavour. Onto main courses and another impressive selection of dishes with mouth watering aromas and again beautifully presented - as is everything in Chaophraya! We enjoyed Four Seasons Duck Curry, unusually cooked with grape, pineapple, strawberry and tomato, on paper this dish looks like my worst nightmare, however it worked and we both really enjoyed it. The Crispy Pork Belly with Thai Basil was a hit also, served with chillies, garlic and green beans, this dish was really so tasty. The flavours cut through the pork which I find a little bland sometimes. The Beef in Black Pepper Sauce was my favourite dish, tender and full of flavour, served on a sizzling plate, the beef simply melted in the mouth and the King Prawns with Ginger packed a punch with fresh ginger and chilli hitting the tastebuds like a little pocket rocket! You can’t beat Chaophraya for taste combinations, beautiful surroundings and truly fantastic service. There are plenty of Thai restaurants in our region worth a try, but don’t miss this one, you won’t be disappointed. Reviewed by Joanne Brook-Smith November 2015

HEADS UP Who knows the menu best? Who makes the biggest impact on your experience? Front of house is your friend! H&N talk shop with Jake Humberstone, general manager of award winning Moody Cow Restaurant, Apperley Bridge. THE MOODY COW APPERLEY BRIDGE BD10 0NS TEL: 0113 239 1444 www.moodycowgrill.co.uk

“We receive many kind comments regarding the friendly, attentive staff we have, which is always nice to hear.” How long have you been working at Moody Cow? I have been at the Moody Cow for 2 years roughly four weeks after it had opened. So, to get us up to speed, give us a brief overview of your career up to press. It all started at a family friend’s local pub as KP at the ‘tender’ age (to quote my Head Chef in your previous edition) of 13, before a rapid promotion to chief spud peeler alongside a glittering rise to the starter and sweets section. After 3 years or so I went to work for a reputable well known chain as a waiter where my realisation that Front of House was for me as opposed to the dark depths of the kitchen! Although most would say I have a face for radio. After a relocation to the God’s county I decided to change it up and tried the ‘Local’ working for a small independent pub company with two sites, one in Woodhouse and the other in the centre of Leeds. It was here I honed my skills at talking utter rubbish in subject areas with little or no interest on my behalf with the local clientele, one could say they smelt something? At this stage I decided to ramp up the knowledge of the industry by studying Managing International Hospitality at University. Really not as glamourous as it sounds, learnt a fair bit, but more interestingly, or not, was the employment during this time. As a catering assistant/crew member for a firm based in Sheffield I was fortunate to work for a number of well-known Artists such as Take That, Oasis, Madonna (thought this was an ample opportunity to drop some names in) and yes Lady G is as eccentric as she appears, her dressing room would not look out of place at a circus! I’ll wrap it up as your probably nearly asleep by now, I’ve spent time at a couple of cocktail bars in LS1 worked as Chef for a couple of years, also LS1, worked for another well-known reputable chain before taking the plunge and joining the Herd. Not sure which is more depressing, reading back to discover you’re really not that interesting, or the fact the last 16 years fits in three small paragraphs. I’ll let you decide...

What’s the best thing about working here? There are numerous facets of the business I enjoy. We have a great team, the quality of our product is excellent, the regular custom is lovely, but I feel I must mention the Bosses’ having worked for independents and large national chains you can feel left in dark or have a carrot dangling in front of you which just gets moved further and further away. With the two dons here they let you know when you’ve messed it up, but are also quick to praise and reward hard work. This is the case for all the staff from the cleaner through to the management, which ultimately aids myself and is probably why our staff turnover is something to be proud of.That should qualify for a suitable pay rise I think? What’s the most challenging part of your job? Pretending we have never heard that cow related pun before.Work-life balance. Having two young beautiful girls (yes I’m not looking forward to their teenage years either) it can often be difficult spending as much time as I would like with them as the norm on special occasions, Mother’s/Father’s day etc., I have to work as they are key dates in our calendar. Thankfully after nearly ten years the better half understands this industry (probably better than me) and we make the most of it when I do have time off. What skills have been put to the test since joining the MC team? Adaptability, for example last week I spent time at Apperley Bridge and Ilkley both in the kitchen and front of house. What are your best selling dishes? Unsurprisingly, I’d imagine, the steaks are very popular but also the Fajitas, Brisket, Buttermilk Chicken and Burgers are also up there. What drinks are going down well? I’d have to say the Peroni on the draught front with Pinot Grigio and Malbec for wine. We also have the Island Oasis cocktail machine which is fairly new to the UK market but knocks out some lovely frozen cocktails. I’d recommend the Cuban Punch, it’s not one of my creations, honest!

Tell us: What makes this restaurant so special? There are two key facets, in my humble opinion. One is the quality of our product and secondly the team. We receive many kind comments regarding the friendly, attentive staff we have which is always nice to hear. If you were a customer today, what would you order from the menu? Baked Camembert to start (with a side of Calamari, love our Calamari!!) and if I’m with the better half the Chateaubriand with lashings of Peppercorn Sauce. What do you think makes great customer service? Identifying your demographic is up there, but defining the offering is just as important. I’ll use the Moody Cow to explain. We’re not a fine dining establishment, we try to promote a relaxed, professional environment with a simple but well executed menu. This enables the team to personalise the experience whilst empowering each individual member of the Herd to exceed the customer expectation. At the other end of the spectrum a Michelin starred restaurant you would expect a great deal of formality and a more mechanical approach to the operation. Where have you visited locally recently, where the service was excellent? The Thornhill Arms, Calverley. Popped in for a quick lunch, the waitress was really friendly, knew what she was talking about and was very efficient. That alongside the lovely home cooked food made for a fantastic experience. Where would you eat out on your day off? San Angelo, Shipley. Great food, great staff and fantastic wine. What do you cook at home? Lasagne – All from scratch, a favourite for all my girls at home and the dog if he’s lucky enough for leftovers.

In an effort to revive the Original Spirit of Ireland Independent Irish whiskey maker, The Teeling Whiskey Company, has released a modern high quality bottling of Poitin. Consisting of nonaged new make Irish whiskey spirit bottled at 61.5% this bottling gives you a unique chance to taste what real Poitin has to offer. Aromas of floss, malted barley, half-baked bread and raisined fruits. To taste it is smooth sweet and fruity flavours of malt, raisined fruits, barley sugars and sugared almonds. Finish: Warm and soothing on the finish.

LAKESIDE DISTILLERY M

ULTI-AWARD WINNING blend of British whiskies, The ONE, has been taken to another level by its creators who have launched an exclusive sherry cask finished expression to celebrate the spirit’s second birthday. Created by the Lakes Distillery, England’s premier whisky distillery, The ONE has been ‘finished’ in Oloroso sherry hogshead casks to further enhance the blend which has become a favourite with whisky drinkers. This is the first time an additional depth of flavour has been added to The ONE and the 3,335 limited edition bottles mark the distillery’s one year anniversary and the whisky’s second – The ONE was officially launched at the Taste Cumbria Festival in September 2013 and the distillery opened in December 2014.Founder and managing director of The Lakes Distillery, Paul Currie, said: “Experimenting with finishes enables us to enhance what is already an exceptional whisky and there is always great interest in these expressions. Sherry casks are well established in the whisky industry for maturing whisky but are rarely used for finishing a blend.

POGUES T

he Original Irish Whiskey of the Legendary Band. Sunlight and barley held together with water and left in an oak barrel for three years and a day. This whiskey is a measure of who we are, made with the sole intention of spreading that same raucous joy. If you’re drinking you’re welcome, pull up a seat and pour. As you would expect, The Pogues Irish Whiskey has as much character as the band itself. Made from a fine blend of grain and single malt Irish whiskey; this mighty drink has an aroma of malts and cracked nuts, with a sweet taste and a smooth intense flavour. Our whiskey is made by West Cork Distillers, one of Ireland’s last independent distilleries. From humble beginnings and the coming together of a Master Blender and his two fisherman friends it now has become a global success, built on friendship and a passion for innovation and quality. The Distillery is based in Skibbereen in the heart of West Cork, the cultural home of Irish Whiskey.

GLENFARCLAS

S

ince 1865 Glenfarclas has been owned and managed by just one family, the Grants of Glenfarclas. To this day Glenfarclas is one of only a few distilleries in Scotland to remain family owned and managed. Now in the hands of the fifth and sixth generation of the family, the Grants remain committed to the vision of creating the best quality Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky in the traditional Speyside style, with a heavy Sherry influence. They produce a wide range of expressions from the mouthwatering freshness of the 10 Years Old, to the indulgent 30 Years Old. One of the delights of Glenfarclas is exploring the subtle differences between the different expressions.
