Students enjoy fun activities at this year’s annual Panther Prowl.

I write this message with immense gratitude. I recently announced that I will retire in June, and as I move through my final year leading this remarkable university, I marvel at what we have achieved together.
We recently marked the successful completion of our ELEVATE fundraising campaign. Thanks to the generosity of our alumni, faculty and staff, corporate partners and friends, more than $35 million was given to support some of the most mission-critical initiatives in our university’s history.
Your generosity has fueled the launch and expansion of vital programs, including Casa Latina, an academic and cultural initiative supporting Latino students and bilingual professionals; the expansion of our College of Urban Education, which continues to prepare culturally competent educators; two urgently needed mental health initiatives that are producing mental health professionals and providing wellness resources for our students; and lastly, your support has significantly increased scholarship funding, opening doors for hundreds of students who now have access to a Davenport education.
A special note of gratitude goes to the Klingenberg family, whose transformative gift helped us create and support the Wellness Center on the W.A. Lettinga Grand Rapids Campus. Their commitment to the health and well-being of our campus community ensures a legacy of care that will benefit generations to come.
As you read through this issue of DU Review, you will learn about one of the programs developed by the College of Urban Education. The FUSE program exposes middle and high school students to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) concepts through engaging activities and experiential learning. The goal is to expose them to in-demand STEMrelated careers while they are having fun.

And how about those Panthers! More than 200 student-athletes have been recognized for their academic achievements in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The honors went across a wide range of men’s and women’s sports. I am so proud of these students who work hard and excel at their chosen sport but never forget why they are at the university. I am looking forward to watching our teams compete.
The ELEVATE campaign name could not have been more fitting. We have, together, elevated this institution, its people and its future. When I retire at the end of June, I will conclude more than 50 years in higher education. Thank you for trusting me to serve this great institution. The best days for Davenport University are still ahead.
Sincerely,
Richard J. Pappas, Ed.D. President

The 26th annual Excellence in Business Gala, which was held in May, was attended by more than 400 guests and raised $285,000 to support scholarships for Davenport students.
The event recognized Dr. Anthony Chang, founder and CEO of BAMF Health, as this year’s Peter C. Cook Excellence in Business Award winner and featured special guest and tennis legend John McEnroe. The university also celebrated the 2025 Gerald R. Ford Memorial Scholarship recipient, Maya Deaton.
All proceeds from the event benefit the Davenport University Scholarship Fund, which provides critical financial support for deserving and talented students. Thanks to the generous support of donors and event sponsors, 90% of Davenport’s students receive financial assistance.
“Davenport graduates contribute tremendously to our region and have a positive impact on the well-being of our communities,” said Richard J. Pappas, Ed.D., president of Davenport University. “More than 90% of our graduates stay in Michigan and give back by working in our hospitals, schools, nonprofits, and other industries. Supporting the Excellence in Business Gala makes an incredible difference for our promising students and helps them get where the world is going in business, technology, health and urban education.”

The annual Excellence in Business Dinner Gala is possible due to the generosity of our community.
Thank you to everyone who joined us to support student scholarships at the 2025 Excellence in Business Gala.

Maya Deaton was selected as this year’s Gerald R. Ford Memorial Scholarship recipient for demonstrating the characteristics of Michigan’s own President Gerald R. Ford, who coached and taught at Davenport before becoming president of the United States. Those traits include demonstrating leadership, civic responsibility, service ethics and courage of conviction.
Deaton graduated from Grand Haven High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and competed and led the Grand Haven girls’ swim and dive team. She will be joining Davenport’s swim and dive team and plans to earn a bachelor’s
in Health and Human Service Case Management. Her plans include pursuing a master’s in occupational therapy while she works in the Grand Rapids area as an emergency medical technician while she is in school.
Deaton was pleased to receive the Gerald R. Ford Memorial Scholarship, which covers full tuition and fees, oncampus room and board, textbooks, and an opportunity to study abroad.
“I understand that this journey is not about achieving personal success or recognition but about fulfilling a greater purpose to serve others and contribute positively to society,” Deaton said.

The prestigious Peter C. Cook Excellence in Business Award is presented annually to someone who exemplifies professional success and commitment to community service. This year, we recognized our 26th recipient, Anthony Chang, founder and CEO of BAMF (Bold Advanced Medical Future) Health.
“We are recognizing Dr. Chang for his incredible tenacity and leadership and for providing world-class cancer treatment and cutting-edge technology in Grand Rapids,” said Richard J. Pappas, Ed.D., president of Davenport University. “He is a visionary leader and possesses the attributes of the award’s namesake, Peter C. Cook. He also serves as a Davenport University trustee.”
Chang founded BAMF Health in 2018 to offer advanced care for cancer patients and those suffering from various neurodegenerative diseases. Chang’s team of highlyskilled clinicians at BAMF uses cutting-edge medicine and is dedicated to delivering innovative and life-saving treatments.
“It is most humbling and surreal to receive this award, and I’m mindful of the legacy this award represents,” said Chang. “To be counted among the previous winners is a privilege, and I don’t take it lightly.”
Chang is the youngest recipient of the Peter C. Cook Excellence in Business Award. When he learned that he had been chosen for the award, he thought, why me? “I realized that by choosing me for this honor, Davenport is trying to make a statement that resilience, bold ideas, dreams and solving impossible problems make the world a better place,” he said. “It’s also a strong signal that a future we’re moving toward is where leadership, excellence and impact are recognized, not where you came from, but where we’re going to go together,” he said.
Chang went on to say that he represents other entrepreneurs who fight to succeed but still wake up every morning with an incurable passion to make things happen.
“I believe this award recognizes in me and BAMF Health those who dare to solve problems that no one has solved before,” he said. “What defines a founder and a team isn’t how perfectly the path is laid out but how you keep moving forward when there is no path. The ability to tackle new and unexplored terrain, to dream boldly, to pick yourself and never give up - this is the heart of an entrepreneur.
This award is not about me. It goes to my entire team because they define excellence, put patients first, and deliver exceptional care.”

This year’s Excellence in Business Gala featured tennis legend, broadcaster, philanthropist and best-selling author, John McEnroe. He sat down with Davenport President Richard J. Pappas for an exclusive conversation about his personal life and exceptional career.
McEnroe began playing tennis when he was eight. He was the youngest #1 ranked male in the history of professional tennis, and won a slew of major titles, including Grand Slams, US Open Championships and three Wimbledon titles, and is a five-time Davis Cup Champion.
He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1999 and is arguably considered one of the greatest players of all time, and he just might owe it all to his high school basketball coach. “I played basketball in high school, and when I was a junior, the coach couldn’t see what I could bring to the table,” he said. “I didn’t want to sit on the bench, so that was the end of my basketball career. I’m so thankful for that coach because it actually got me on the tennis court more, and then I went to #1 in the world.”
During the pair’s conversation, McEnroe stressed that to be one of the world’s greatest tennis players, he had to continuously push himself to be better, to do better, something he continues with the John McEnroe Tennis Academy and the Johnny Mac Tennis project, both of which provide opportunities for young players.

McEnroe spoke of the first time he played Jimmy Connors. It was 1977, and McEnroe was an 18-yearold amateur going up against one of the best players in the world on one of tennis’ biggest stages: Wimbledon. “I had never played on the center court at Wimbledon and was completely overwhelmed,” he said. “I lost to Connors and then went to college to give myself time to prepare for the pros.” That decision turned out to be just what McEnroe needed to advance to the next level. He went on to play Connors 33 times and beat him 20-13.
“Jimmy was one of my favorite players because no one ever tried harder than he did, so I respected him,” McEnroe said. “At night I’d go to my hotel room, look in the mirror and ask myself if I was playing as hard as Jimmy Connors, and most of the time, it felt like the answer was no. Thanks to him, I found another gear and we made each other better players.”
McEnroe told of another memorable match, and loss, to Bjorn Borg at Wimbledon in 1980. While McEnroe lost the match, he called it a good loss. “It was the greatest match I had ever been a part of because it changed the way people looked at me,” he said. “I had a bad reputation in England at the time, and even though I lost the match, I gained respect from the other players, the fans and the media, so even though I lost, it elevated me and made me hungry. And that made me realize I needed to find that other gear to get better.” McEnroe and Borg played each other 14 times and split 7-7.
McEnroe is known all over the world for his passion on the court and his fiery personality. For McEnroe, it wasn’t just a personality trait; it was a necessity. “I wanted to win and had to figure out a way to get an edge over my opponents, so I brought that intensity and energy.”

Davenport University President Richard J. Pappas, Ed.D., has been a leader in higher education for nearly 50 years. He has been the president of four institutions and has held that role at Davenport since 2009. Pappas announced in August that he will retire at the end of this academic year.
DU Review’s Mary Eilleen Lyon talked to the president about mentors, leadership, Davenport and the idea that he just might not set his alarm for a 4:30 a.m. workout come June.
DU Review:
How are you feeling about making the retirement decision and then announcing it publicly?
Pappas:
I thought about it for a long time. I still have all the passion in the world for what I’m doing. Most people would say you should retire when you lose your passion, but what I thought about was what I want to do after I leave. I have grandchildren to see; my wife wants to travel, but more importantly, I still feel strong physically and mentally, and this might be a good time for me to find some other purpose. So, it was hard, but after I told the board and it was made public, it felt right. Even though I feel passionate about the university, it’s time for somebody else to take the mantle.
DU Review:
What do you see as the trajectory forward for the next university president?
Pappas:
I am so optimistic about where we are and what we’ve come through - the pandemic, for instance. This is a cool place to work! What a unique mission: closing the talent gap, being able to create great programs that help people become successful in the workplace and be ready to work right away. We have a phenomenal leadership team. We have phenomenal faculty and staff. The new president will bring in

his or her great skills, and I have confidence in this university and that the board will hire the right person. It’s in a great place, but there’s so much more that can still be done.
DU Review:
Let’s talk about your career. What made you want to pursue your first presidency at what must have been a relatively young age?
Pappas:
My father was a college president, but that wasn’t where I was going. I originally wanted to be the president of General Motors. During my undergraduate years, I was an intern at AC Spark Plug in Flint and then at Chevrolet, and I realized that was not for me. My dad said, ‘why don’t you take a course at the University of Michigan in the higher ed area?’ I loved it, and I started my master’s in business and higher education.
DU Review:
You must have had fantastic mentors.
Pappas:
There was a professor at Michigan, Joe Cosand. He was a great mentor. He was a former president at three different institutions. He was one of the first ones, outside of my father, who said, ‘You ever think about becoming a college president?’ I was in my 20s. People don’t realize what a

difference one supportive statement from somebody you respect can make. Then, when I was a dean, there was a president named Clyde LeTarte, and I wanted to be just like him. He was charismatic and a doer; he was so patient. He had to be patient because I was a 30-year-old dean! I gained a lot of confidence as a dean. Then I got my first presidency when I was 37, and I remember walking into my office and shutting the door and saying, ‘What do I do now?’ (laughs)
The first headline in one of the newspapers read the new president is decades younger than his staff. People might perceive you to be too old or too young, but it’s your own confidence in your support system and your capabilities, and hiring into a place that needs someone like you - what the boards want. In each of my four presidencies, I was very fortunate to line up in the right way with the boards.
DU Review:
What are the key qualities a leader at a university should have?
Pappas:
Really high on the list is to be empathetic and to care about the mission and the vision that’s been created. You have to believe the work is much bigger than you. You’re just a part of the solution, not the solution. Treat everyone well, not just CEOs. Be humble but confident and motivated to take advantage of opportunities. Hire well and let people do their jobs. When something goes wrong, don’t blame others, take the responsibility. Over communicate and don’t surprise anybody.

DU Review:
This year will have poignant moments of the last time you’ll do this or that.
Pappas:
It’s hard. I love interacting with students and staff and people in the community. To me, that’s fun, and it’s important that I represent Davenport in the way it deserves to be represented. The most difficult for me will be my last commencement. My daughter most likely will be graduating with her master’s at that ceremony.
DU Review:
What are you most looking forward to in retirement?
Pappas:
I’m looking forward to spending more time with my wife Pam. Seeing my grandchildren is a joy for me. About 25 years ago, I started writing a murder mystery on a university campus. I have two chapters done, so I might as well finish that and see if I can publish it. The president doesn’t die in this book, by the way. (laughs)
I’m physically active, so I’ll work out longer than I do now, but I don’t have a firm plan. I don’t like to garden. I don’t like to fix things, so time will tell what I end up doing. I’m sad about what I will miss, but I won’t miss getting up at 4:30 in the morning, working out and coming in at six. I’ll still get up early, but it won’t be at 4:30!

• $1.2 million to support first-generation students, mentoring 172 students with a 90% retention rate and reaching more than 1,000 students in the prior academic year through targeted outreach.

Davenport University announced the successful completion of its historic ELEVATE Campaign, raising more than $35.4 million to support students, expand academic programs and transform the future of the institution. With this achievement, Davenport declares itself officially ELEVATED—a powerful signal of progress and momentum that will shape student outcomes and community impact for years to come.
Launched as part of Davenport’s Vision 2025 strategic plan, the ELEVATE Campaign set out to remove barriers, expand access and invest in the most critical areas of student success. From financial aid and mental health services to first-generation mentorship and bilingual education, the campaign touched nearly every corner of the university.
“This is more than a fundraising milestone, it’s a reimagining of what’s possible for our students and our institution,” said Richard J. Pappas, Ed.D., president of Davenport University. “Thanks to the generosity and commitment of our supporters and partners, we are expanding access, empowering students and elevating educational opportunities in Michigan and beyond.”
In total, the ELEVATE Campaign raised $35,446,440, supported by more than 5,000 donors and thousands more who engaged through events, outreach and advocacy. Key areas of investment include:
• $7.9 million combined in capital and other programmatic support, strengthening areas such as athletics, nursing and campus events.
The campaign’s investments have led to significant enhancements across the student experience. Davenport created new academic pathways, added faculty and support positions, expanded wellness services, and increased scholarship access for underserved populations.
ELEVATE also helped fuel Davenport’s performance across key metrics. Graduation rates have increased by 200% since 2009, while 95% of recent graduates would recommend Davenport, and 96% of graduates are employed or continuing their education.
Retention rates have also risen steadily, reaching 78% in 2024, up from 60% in 2009. These results reflect the university’s deliberate focus on student well-being, financial support and inclusive program design.
Signature events like the Excellence in Business Gala and Scholarship Golf Outing raised more than $1.8 million and brought more than 3,000 guests together during the ELEVATE campaign and Vision 2025 in celebration of student success.

A growing number of students in Michigan are being exposed to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) concepts in a fun and relatable way, thanks to a unique program developed by Davenport University’s College of Urban Education (CUE).
The Future Urban STEM Education (FUSE) program brings together interested middle and high school students from community organizations and participating schools, such as Grand Rapids Public Schools, to explore their interests in STEM and teaching.
Under the guidance of Davenport’s CUE and teachers from participating school districts, FUSE Clubs are formed to give students a deeper understanding of STEM concepts through engaging activities and experiments. It also exposes them to in-demand STEM-related careers.

“The FUSE program empowers middle and high school students to explore real-world STEM challenges and careers in teaching through hands-on, interest-driven learning that builds confidence, creativity and collaboration,” said Meaghan Polega, Ed.D., College of Urban Education associate department chair. “The program offers access to future-ready skills and inspires the next generation of innovators by making STEM concepts culturally responsive, relevant, engaging and fun.”
It’s a program that positively impacts and engages students at both levels. High school FUSE members meet with their teacher to review modules provided by the CUE and create lesson plans and activities, which are then presented to the middle school members. The high schoolers benefit from the guided exploration of diverse STEM concepts while building confidence in their presentation skills and experiencing what it might be like to be a teacher. The middle school members benefit from the hands-on activities presented to them in a relatable and engaging way.
Davenport’s College of Urban Education partnered with the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Technology to create the first two volumes of educational modules for the FUSE Clubs. Volumes three and beyond are created by Bachelor of Science Urban STEM students and National Science Foundation Robert NOYCE Scholar students as part of their capstone experiences.
These ready-made educational modules include problemsolving and scientific inquiry, such as exploring urban farming, examining water pollution in the community and studying robotics and principles of kinetic energy.
In one activity, students explore and analyze chemical reactions by creating sidewalk chalk as a product of a reaction. They then use the chalk to explain the reaction. Another activity explores the physics of sound waves and sound wave energy using a variety of musical instruments, which the students use to create their own advertising jingle for a real or fictional product.
Davenport’s first FUSE Club began in 2018 at the Urban League of West Michigan, and that number has grown to include 20 partner school districts across the state.
Grand Rapids Public Schools became involved in 2019 with its first FUSE club at University Preparatory Academy, followed by Southwest Middle and High Academia Bilingue in 2023.
Charlotte Cabello-Rivera teaches biology and human anatomy at Southwest High Academia Bilingue and has been involved in the FUSE program for one year. She currently has 12 students in her high school FUSE Club with whom she meets every two weeks to create activities that can be implemented with the middle school members.
Cabello-Rivera said the FUSE program is special because of the way it is designed. “I love it when my students discuss activities and implement solutions to real-world problems, and I love watching them debate and generate ideas for mentoring the middle school students,” she said. “It’s an experience that really moves me and motivates me to continue my educational career.”
Cabello-Rivera said high school FUSE members can enroll in dual enrollment courses and receive college credit from Davenport, which is a big bonus.

One student in Cabello-Rivera’s FUSE class is an eleventh grader, Maria Pacheco, who became involved in the program to inspire younger kids and to help grow her passion for STEM. “In one experiment, we got to see what tree buds, moss and leaves look like under a microscope, and the kids were so excited,” she said. “I’d like to be an elementary teacher someday and hope I can create that kind of excitement with my students while learning about STEM.”
Several of Pacheco’s classmates and FUSE members said they love working with the middle schoolers because it’s fun and helps to enhance their communication skills.
Seventh-grade science teacher Emily Hollingsworth teaches at Southwest Middle Academia Bilingue and has partnered with Rivera to facilitate the FUSE Club for two years. She currently has 14 middle school students in the club.
“The FUSE program allows older students to serve in more of a mentorship role for the younger students, and it’s neat to see the high school students lead the lessons and become role models,” said Hollingsworth. “I’ve enjoyed having the high schoolers in my classroom. Not only are they able to assist with hands-on STEM projects, giving my students
more individualized support, but they also bring fresh ideas and perspectives, and my students like learning from the older kids.”
Hollingsworth said one of the most rewarding parts of the experience has been witnessing the growth of the high school students. “At the beginning of the year, many of the high school students were hesitant and unsure about leading the lessons, but by the end of the year, they were confidently leading full lessons and truly stepping into their roles as teachers,” she said.
The students in Hollingworth and Cabello-Rivera’s classes are already starting to think about their future careers, with some leaning toward STEM, one of the fastest-growing segments of the job market.
Those who go on to become STEM teachers won’t have to worry about finding a job because the demand for STEM teachers, particularly in high-need and low-income schools, is high, leading to a shortage of qualified educators at the K-12 and collegiate levels.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, STEM occupations are expected to grow faster than non-STEM occupations. This growth is driven by advancements in technology, increased reliance on AI, and the need for skilled workers to fill the roles.
Not all students in the FUSE Club will go on to pursue a career in STEM, but those who do will be well compensated. The current median annual wage for STEM occupations is $103,580 and that is expected to rise.
Davenport is working to bring the FUSE program to more schools across Michigan. School districts interested in partnering with Davenport to form a FUSE club should contact Polega at mpolega1@davenport.edu for more information.

Davenport University FUSE Clubs are supported by grant funding from the National Science Foundation’s Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program and the U.S. Department of Education’s Community Project Funding.

Story by Leslie Kinnee
Davenport University’s student body has nearly 5,000 students, 1,000 of whom are athletes. These student-athletes choose to attend Davenport for a variety of reasons, including the university’s reputation as a high-quality educational institution and the chance to play sports for the Panthers. Regardless of what brings them to Davenport, they are held to the same high standards when it comes to prioritizing educational excellence. The opportunity to play collegiate sports is a dream come true for many, but the ultimate goal is to graduate and earn a degree that will lead to a rewarding career.

During the 2024/2025 academic year, an impressive 220 Davenport student-athletes earned Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) academic honors. Of those recognized, 79 received academic honors (3.0-3.49 GPA) and 141 earned academic excellence (3.5-above GPA) designations. In addition, numerous Davenport athletes and several teams also received academic honors in sports not affiliated with the GLIAC.
“High academic achievement among student-athletes is a major point of pride at Davenport and reflects the university’s strong commitment to developing well-rounded individuals,” said Paul Lowden, executive director of Intercollegiate Athletics. “Last year, the sum of Davenport athletes carried a 3.3 GPA, which is pretty incredible.”
The women’s golf team is a great example of academic and athletic excellence. The team was recognized for its scholarly performance during the 2024-2025 season by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA). Davenport was able to finish with the fourth-highest GPA in NCAA Division II with a 3.879 team GPA, earning a spot on the WGCA All-American Scholar Team. Five women on Davenport’s golf team were also individually recognized for academic performance.
Jess Niemiec, head coach for the women’s golf team, said she is incredibly proud of her team’s accomplishments, both on the course and in the classroom. “To consistently rank in the top five academically in NCAA Division II Women’s Golf for seven consecutive years is a testament to their discipline and commitment to their education,” she said. “It’s not easy to balance the demands of being a student-athlete, and they do an outstanding job.”
According to Niemiec, members of her team know that hard work pays off, and they push each other to achieve their academic, athletic and personal goals. “They’re not just teammates, they’re a true support system for each other that extends beyond the golf course,” she said. “Whether they’re navigating a tough round, studying for a midterm, or just need someone to talk to, they share a common respect for one another’s individual strengths and always have each other’s backs.”
Last year, the team took home six top-3 finishes, one tournament team win, and advanced for the second year in a row to postseason competition in the NCAA DII Women’s Golf East Regionals. Under her guidance, the golfers broke two team records and one individual record.

When it comes to the upcoming season, Niemiec is confident about her program and the direction it’s headed. “What excites me most is how committed this group is to improving every day,” she said. “The work ethic and drive they’ve shown have been outstanding. With their passion for the game and continued hard work, I believe we’ll get to our goal of going to post-season competition again this year!”
To help student-athletes reach their educational potential, Davenport provides wrap-around support from its coaching staff, Faculty Athletic Representative, Wellness Center, tutors, Student Life and more.
Coaching staff
Lowden said the university’s coaches are fully invested in student-athletes’ academic success. This personalized approach consists of grade tracking and time management planning around travel and competitions. It also includes early intervention for athletes struggling with a course, and mandatory study hall hours for underclassmen or those with GPAs below a certain threshold. What’s more, the coaching staff motivates their athletes by encouraging them to be champions on and off the field, emphasizing responsibility, accountability, discipline and balance.
Todd Pitts, associate professor of management for Davenport University and faculty athletics representative (FAR), serves as a liaison between faculty and the Athletic Department. He supports student-athletes and makes sure they understand that they are students first and athletes second.
“If a student-athlete is struggling in class, having personal issues or facing mental health challenges, I step in. Often, this involves looping in other departments to help them work through challenges,” he said.
The Keith and Kathryn Klingenberg Wellness Center
The university’s Klingenberg Wellness Center has seen a steady growth of students seeking counseling, especially athletes. “The pressure of being a student athlete can be significant, and we want our athletes to know that our counselors can help them work through expectations and feelings of pressure and anxiety, and that no issue is too big or too small,” said Darrin Oliver, lead counselor. “We also support injured athletes impacted by depression, anxiety and identity loss.”
Tutors
All students have access to free 24/7 online tutoring, which is especially helpful for studentathletes who may need assistance with their homework or test preparation outside of normal hours due to competitions and travel.
Student life
Student Life supports student-athletes by providing fun events that foster connections beyond teams and classrooms. They also provide accommodations to athletes with disabilities, impairments or temporary physical setbacks.

I love the variety my role offers and the opportunity to collaborate with different teams to deliver the best possible results for our partners. Each campaign brings something new — whether it's learning about a different product and/or crafting a marketing strategy tailored to its unique offerings. That constant change keeps things exciting and allows me to stay curious and creative in my approach.
During my time at Davenport, I really appreciated the flexibility of the online program, which allowed me to balance work and school effectively. Despite being fully remote, the professors fostered a collaborative environment and provided meaningful feedback. I felt like they genuinely took the time to understand my writing and project style, and I enjoyed connecting with classmates from across the country.
Key Mentor/Decision
A key decision that has shaped my career was pursuing my MBA. With an undergraduate background in communications, I knew I needed to further my knowledge of marketing and business administration to round out my skillset and reach the goals I had set for myself. That decision gave me the confidence and qualifications to pursue (and keep pursuing) the experiences I wanted in my career.
Job Title
Family Nurse Practitioner – Internal Medicine
Work Passion
I love serving the West Michigan community where I grew up. As a nurse practitioner, I enjoy building long-term relationships with my patients and helping them take charge of their health. Being able to educate and empower individuals through every stage of life is incredibly rewarding.
Davenport Highlight
My time at Davenport was truly special. I not only received an excellent education, but I had the opportunity to run cross country and track & field during my undergraduate years. Being a student-athlete taught me discipline, time management and resilience. The friendships I made remain some of my closest, and I’m so grateful for my professors and coaches who genuinely supported my academic and personal growth.
Key Mentor/Decision
I’ve always worked hard to reach my goals, but the foundation was laid early in life. Caring for a paraplegic neighbor as a child helped me realize my passion for serving others. That experience sparked a lifelong desire to care for others and ultimately led me to nursing — a profession where I can make a meaningful impact every day.

Educator at Grand Rapids Public Schools
Principal at North Park Montessori Academy
Whitley Morse’s passion for education began early—watching her mother study to become a teacher and later “forcing cousins to play school.” Born in Kalamazoo and raised in rural Van Buren County, she experienced the contrast between predominantly urban and rural schools, shaping her commitment to equity in education. After earning her undergraduate degree from Grand Valley State University, Whitley began teaching in Grand Rapids Public Schools, where she experienced the challenges and rewards of working in an urban setting.
Seeking to deepen her impact, she enrolled in Davenport University’s Urban Education program with her husband and fellow educator, Dan Morse. Davenport helped her gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to become a stronger teacher and leader. Today, Whitley and her husband continue to work in education and proudly have their daughter attend school in the GRPS system, where they are committed to public schools and the community they love. She is currently working towards her National Board Certification through a TeachMi Fellowship and was named “Teacher of the Year” for GRPS. Davenport’s program laid the foundation for the work she does every day. She is honored to receive this award and grateful to represent the program that helped her grow as an educator, advocate and parent.
Born and raised in Grand Rapids, Dan Morse’s roots here run deep. His mother taught children with hearing impairments in GRPS for more than 30 years, and he graduated from GRPS in 2006 with a drive to return home and make an impact in some of those same classrooms one day. His first classroom was at Creston High School, where he taught social studies and history before finding a more permanent home at Innovation Central High School in 2013.
While at Innovation Central, Morse enrolled in the first cohort of the College of Urban Education. Working in this dynamic program with driven and passionate colleagues drove him to explore how our classrooms and schools are connected to our homes and communities. It pushed him to learn more - not just about educational practices and policies, but also how they impact students, families and teachers - and how we can change them for the better. Now entering his 15th year in education, Dan is now the principal at North Park Montessori Academy, a vibrant school community of more than 500 learners in grades PK-8. Dan lives in the Ridgemoor neighborhood of Grand Rapids with his amazing wife, Whitley, and daughter, Geneva.

When Dylan M. Silva, MBA ’21, reflects on his journey, it’s one shaped by resilience, relentless curiosity and a deep commitment to helping others. A 2021 graduate of Davenport University’s Donald W. Maine College of Business, Silva has transformed personal adversity into professional excellence, and he credits much of his success to the foundation he built at Davenport.

Originally from Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grandville High School, Silva is part of a Davenport legacy family. His mother, Pamela, earned both her associate and bachelor’s degrees from DU, and his younger brother, Mason, completed his MBA at the university. But Silva’s path to success wasn’t straightforward. At just 11 years old, he survived a neardrowning accident at Ludington State Park that left him with a traumatic brain injury. He spent the next seven years relearning how to walk, talk and navigate life.
“I fix business problems. Whether it’s a strategy that’s not working or a regulatory issue that needs immediate action—I get brought in to make it right.”
That resilience propelled Silva forward. After high school, he attended Long Island University and began building a high-level career in business operations, working in Times Square as an operations manager before entering the world of banking and consulting. He later moved into risk and compliance roles at Wells Fargo
and Bank of America during some of the most turbulent times in the industry, helping institutions navigate regulatory crises and complex matters requiring attention.
His professional journey spans continents—living in China, consulting for major U.S. banks and tech companies, and helping launch a new investment product that achieved five million funded accounts in just 30 days. Silva is known in his field for taking on high-profile, high-risk projects and bringing them back on track.
“I fix business problems. Whether it’s a strategy that’s not working or a regulatory issue that needs immediate action—I get brought in to make it right,” Silva explained. His straightforward approach and ability to deliver under pressure have made him a trusted partner to executives and even federal regulators.
While building a remarkable career, Silva returned to his Michigan roots through Davenport University’s MBA program. The experience allowed him to immediately apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges and form lasting connections through a small, close-knit cohort. Despite being spread across the country, the group remains connected and even flew to Michigan to celebrate graduation together during the pandemic.
“I really enjoyed my time at Davenport,” Silva said. “The smaller class sizes, the practical application of coursework and the strong network have all played a big role in my career. I’ve since referred multiple friends and family members to the program.”
Now based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Silva serves in a senior leadership role for a consulting company. He also co-founded the Charlotte Clubhouse, a nonprofit that supports adults with serious mental illness, and recently partnered with Michigan-based be nice. to bring mental health advocacy to North Carolina.
“Surround yourself with the kind of people you want to grow with,” Silva advised. “Your network is only as strong as the people you keep around you—and that’s true both personally and professionally.”
Silva’s next goals? Finish his doctorate in Strategy and Innovation, publish a book about his brain injury and one day launch his own consulting firm. Through it all, he remains passionate about mentorship, leadership and helping others see their potential.
His advice to current students? “Be curious, ask questions and believe in yourself—because confidence is the best rank you can have.”
