As spring is just around the corner the Davenport Parks and Recreation team is busily preparing to offer some truly fantastic events for the spring and summer. Speaking of fantastic, this year’s summer theme for the Vander Veer Botanical Park is “Fantastic Plants and Where to Find Them”. Visitors should be sure to pick up their field guide packet and enjoy the magical adventure through the park.

Another far out attraction coming this summer is the much anticipated arrival of our Cosmic Golf system. Come out this summer to the Duck Creek Golf Course driving range to experience a one of kind futuristic experience.

Recreation:

I am also happy to mention that our parks will once again be playing host to the City’s Party in the Park events. After the success of the inaugural season last year we hope to build on the community engagement and fun in our neighborhood parks.

Get ready for a summer of fun, filled with excitement and activities throughout the community from June 10th through August 14th at Garfield Park! AdventureCamp is a wonderful summer experience for Kids 6-12 years old and is filled with games, crafts and integrated educational experiences. There are exciting weekly theme-based field trips and outdoor activities planned every day! For our smaller campers, we offer a Small Adventures Camp for Pre-School aged children. Kids will be able to express their creativity and engage in hands�on themed activities, games, enrichment lessons in a relaxed outdoor environment. For the teens out there that love camp and want to gain or improve leadership skills − we've got you covered! Teen Camp will focus on leadership through team activities, volunteering, all mixed together with traditional camp activities. Each week camp will swim, volunteer and go on field trips.

SUMMER THEME

Vander Veer Summer Theme

Memorial Day-Labor Day Every summer Vander Veer Botanical Park is transformed into a magical place and this year is no exception. Continuing the year of magic at the park, the summer theme will be loosely based on J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world and the Fantastic Beasts series. Once you arrive at Vander Veer, you will be transported into the wizarding realm full of topiary beasts, enchanted gardens, and fun at every stop! Kids and parents alike will enjoy ‘Fantastic Plants and Where to Find Them’ summer theme. The adventure begins at the Vander Veer Conservatory, where visitors can pick-up their field guide packet, which includes a map of the park and instructions on how to begin their adventure. Participants will join tour guide Newt Salamander on his excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical plants and creatures. On the expedition, park-goers will track down all of the misplaced magical items within the park and help deliver them safely back to the

Conservatory, where the final prize awaits. The Vander Veer summer theme is sponsored by the Friends of Vander Veer and there is no cost to attend. Participants can enjoy Fantastic Plants and Where to Find Them Memorial Day through Labor Day. Don’t miss out on the magic this summer at Davenport Parks and Recreation! TOP 5 ACTIVITIES Spring can bring warmer weather and more opportunities to get outside and be active with your kids. You may already be familiar with Davenport Parks and Recreation, but we offer loads of wonderful programs and events in the the spring and summer that you won’t want to miss! We are excited to be highlighting a few programs that might not always make the activity list ― you'll definitely want to add them to your calendar this year! While you may be familiar with some of the programs, events and venues that Davenport has to offer, others are some of the best kept secrets in the Quad Cities. Here are our Top 5 Favorites that you can check out this spring and summer:

Fejervary Learning Center

Come rediscover Mother Goose Land at Fejervary Learning Center. Parkgoers will enjoy interactive play areas and learn about conservation concepts through nursery rhyme imagery. The park will continue hosting our free Family Fun Days on every third Saturday, May through October. There is no charge for these events and we will have family activities, bounce houses, a petting zoo, nature crafts and more.

Public Skating and Learn to Skate Classes

The River’s Edge in downtown Davenport offers more than just indoor soccer ― there’s also public ice skating and skilled instructors to teach the basics through our Learn to Skate program. Nature Education continued. our new Community Garden class, there is something for all ages! The new Community Garden class helps kids cultivate a love of nature and a connection to plants. Children will learn to plant and harvest their own crops and flowers. The introductory session overviews garden etiquette and class structure. Three workday classes will be planned each month where participants can learn about different tasks related to gardening. At the end of the season, all participants will get to take home their own set of gardening supplies! Another fun adult offering is our Coffee and Cuttings class. Participants can come get their caffeine fix and learn how to propagate a different plant each month! Each session attendees learn about a featured plant, how to grow it, and then take their cutting to plant at home!

Davenport Junior Theatre is well known for their diverse array of performing arts programs and camps, but did you know that they also have an amazing dance program with a newly renovated studio space? Their motto is ‘Engage! Empower! Express!’ and DJT Dance offers students the opportunity to learn from professional instructors that focus on the joy and fun of learning dance. Their goal is to help create a lifetime of poise and confidence for all students at every level. Though they may not be widely known, all of these programs and events are helping to enact our mission of enriching the community through rewarding experiences, appealing destinations and responsible stewardship. Our spring floral display is ongoing with beautiful flowers blooming weekly! Easter lilies will be on display leading up to the holiday and daises and fuchsias will be around for Mother's Day! In the summer, the Conservatory and Botanical Gardens are transformed for the seasonal theme, with tropical plants galore! This year the summer theme is 'Fantastic Plants and Where to Find Them' and it is sure to be a magical time!

id you know Davenport Junior Theatre (DJT) is America’s second-oldest children’s theatre?

Founded in 1951, the past is important at DJT. Spanning the history of their program is the belief that all kids deserve the chance to be themselves, express imaginatively, and have fun! For nearly 70 years, skills have been built to help every child lead a successful life; giving kids the tools to speak clearly, confidently, and creatively. DJT provides camps, classes, dance programs and theatre workshops yearround, and produce three mainstage productions during the school year. If you sign up for classes by 5/1, participants will recive the Early Bird Discount rate, including $10 off all classes (not valid for camps). You can also rent the theatre for your next large gathering. The Mary Fluhrer-Nighswander Theatre is a 350-seat house, fully equipped with sound and lighting. DJT Class Descriptions Theatre Fun! Let imaginations soar with Theatre Fun! This high energy class is full of creative theatre games that focus on getting our students engaged by using their bodies, voices and imaginations! They’ll learn basic theatre warm-ups, games, and skills to create imaginative stories and characters! Acting New, dynamic, and fun each session, acting classes can be taken time and time again to expand foundational skills. Acting develops a student’s ability to speak clearly, confidently, and creatively! This imaginative, high energy environment provides basic theatre terminology, improvisation, characterization, vocal technique and physical skills. The session concludes with a performance of a play! Teen Acting Whether a first time actor or experienced veteran, this class is an exciting challenge! Teen Acting is a great way to get theatrical training, some onstage experience, and meet other teens from around the QCA who share an interest in theatre. Broadway Beats!

Get your toes tapping and fingers snapping! Explore storytelling through song and dance. Musical theatre develops coordination and social skills through exercises, movement, and games. Have fun moving and grooving with all your friends! Musical Theatre Ever wonder what it’s like to be in a Broadway musical? Come find out! Musical Theatre class develops storytelling and communication skills through acting, song and dance. Physical coordination and confidence flourish. No one is required to sing a solo (some may be offered), as this class is about building confidence. Character Creation Students will learn to push their bodies, voices and imaginations to create dynamic characters! Great characters are the heart of great stories, and we'll learn how to bring those characters to life. Fill the stage with your creativity! There is no overacting, just unfulfilled acting! Monologue Madness Got an audition? Students will learn what it takes to deliver a top rate monologue to help them nail the audtion and book the part! This class will focus on breaking down scripts and delivering a memorable performance! Lights, Camera, Action! Got dreams of being on the big (or small) screen? Learn what it takes to translate your theatre skills to acting for the camera! Whether acting in tv, film, or commercials, on camera acting takes a whole new set of skills and focus. This course focuses on using proper technique to create any accent, while also focusing on 2-3 specific accents from both home and around the globe! Want to sound like you're from another country? Now's your chance! Voice Over Welcome to the booth! From the voices of your favorite animated characters to audio books to movie trailers, voice over acting is a fun, exciting world that spans all areas of the acting world. Learn basic VO techniques to make your voice dynamic, exciting, and fun! Vocal Performance Are you ready to dive deep on making your voice spectacular? Mastery of your voice involves more than just singing! Participants will work on breathing exercises, working as part of an ensemble, matching pitch and tone, and learning the basics of reading music. Intro to Tech Design What does it take to put up a theatrical production? How do you program lights, design sound, build a set, or collaborate as a designer with a director? This class is hands on, exploring all the work that goes behind the magic of theatre. Concludes with sharing of new skills and designs. Puppetry Have you ever used a puppet to tell a story? In Puppetry, students explore the creative, and fun, world of stage puppetry! Â Puppetry builds strong motor and coordination skills, while developing the bonds of teamwork with fellow puppeteers. Playwriting The energy of theatre begins with the playwright - could that be you? This class introduces the craft of writing for the theater. id you know Davenport Junior Theatre (DJT) Dance has multple dance opportunities available for your child?

DJT Dance is a non-competitive dance program that focuses on the joy of learning dance. Dance helps children develop physical technique and social skills — DJT Dance gives students the tools to engage and express themselves with the world around them. From ages 3 to 18, DJT Dance is a low-cost option to try out dance. The goal of the program is to make dance education accessible and affordable for all families. New this year is Drop-in Dance! Students looking to dance without the commitment of a full session will love this weekly drop-in dance class! Making things even easier for dance families, DJT Dance has developed a new exchange program for dance equipment. Our June session will be all virtual! Held through Zoom, the DJT team is ready to delight your child with fun and exciting classes. This Zoom session ensures we’ll continue to reach all kids. DJT Dance Class Descriptions Creative Movement This fun class helps to build locomotive skills essential to a strong dance foundation. Using imagination play students will become different things and travel to far away places! Creativity and having fun is what this class is all about! Beginning Ballet Dancers learn ballet fundamentals and concepts such as turnout and spatial awareness. Class will include floor stretching, ballet positions and movements across the floor. Dancers work on developing musicality and ballet vocabulary. FUNdamentals: Ballet This Introductory class is perfect for students new to ballet or want to brush up on their basics. Class will work on posture, musicality, and the proper execution of steps. Dancers will be introduced to basic turns, moving steps, leaps, and work on flexibility. Intermediary Ballet Ballet for the experienced dancer. Class will work to improve basic technique while challenging dancers with new skills, intricate combinations, and more advanced choreography. FUNdamentals: Poms This fun and high energy class will introduce dancers to proper jazz and cheer technique. Dancers will learn basic arm positions that when used in combination together create sharp visual effects in routines. Dances will also learn stretches to improve flexibility, basic turns and jumps, and short combinations. Intermediary Pom Poms dance for the experienced dancer! Dancers will continue to improve upon turns, jumps, and overall jazz technique. Complex combinations are sure to be a fun challenge for dancers. Recommended for Poms 1 to Int/ Adv Poms and/or previous Poms dance experience. FUNdamentals: Hip Hop This class is for dancers who love to move to high energy music. Students will learn basic hip hop steps as seen on many TV dance shows and popular music. This style will build precision and coordination where the focus will be on showing off a dancer’s style. Intermediary Hip Hop This class is for dancers who have mastered the basic hip hop skills and are ready for more advanced technique. Class will focus on breaking down kickline technique as far as rhythm and synchronizing with team members, and advanced turns such as seconds and triple pirouettes. Previous dance experienced highly recommended. Tone It Up! (Adventures) Miss Tabitha takes us on fun adventures with this workout class for kids and their parents! Each week we will explore movements from our favorite activites to get us moving and our heart rates up! Tone It Up! (Strengthen Up) Join Ms. Ashlea for a fun strength training class! Located on the beautiful Annie Wittenmyer Campus, we are open year round. Nighswander Theatre With a seating capacity of 350, this fully operational, newly renovated theatre is the perfect spot for your event. It includes basic lighting and sound, as well as one onsite staffer. For an additional cost, we can also provide a dance floor, projector, additional staff, or a variety of other needs. Fee: $250 First two hours (2 hour minimum). $100 Each additional hour. $250 Down to hold date, nonrefundable, applied to total balance. Newly Renovated Facility For nearly 70 years Davenport Junior Theatre has provided a safe environment for kids to be brave, be bold and have fun! Thanks to the support of the community, future generations of kids will perform in our newly renovated Mary Fluhrer Nighswander Theatre (renovated Fall 2017). Davenport Parks and Recreation offered to match funds if Junior Theatre Inc. could raise $70,000. Junior Theatre Inc. exceeded that goal and raised over $110,000! Renovations include new seats, fresh paint, bathroom restoration, curtains, refinished doors, carpeting, ADA improvements, sound system upgrades, lighting enhancements, and much more!

avenport Parks and Recreation (DPR) has a full line-up of youth and adult sports this summer!

From softball and soccer for adults to t-ball and track and field for kids, there are plenty of ways to stay active this spring and summer. DPR youth sports is open to all boys and girls, Pre-K through 8th grade in local public and private schools. The program is geared toward the player, with emphasis on teaching the rules and fundamentals of the game. DPR encourage growth through learning, stress sportsmanship and the importance of being part of a team. Partnering with the Cornbelt Running Club, DPR is hosting a free Junior Track and Field Club. This is a non-competitive program to introduce children to the sport of track and field. Check the website for dates and times. DPR also offers inclusive programming for our special populations. Our recently constructed Miracle Field is going to be busy this summer with new events, including Field Days, My Play ClubŠ, and the outdoor Movie and Tailgate Party. Davenport Youth Sports

Davenport Youth Sports is a recreational sport program run voluntarily by parents and other community members and provides a quality program that is open to all boys and girls, Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade in local public and private schools. Intermediate Tumbling (SPR32211) This class consists of refining basic tumbling skills and increasing strength and flexibility. This class includes introduction to front and back walkovers, limbers, and Arabians. Students should be familiar with front and back rolls, back-bends, cartwheels, and round-offs. Class will not be held on 5/25. The Challenger League The Challenger League allows boys and girls with physical and mental disabilities to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide. Challenger League Teams are set up according to abilities, rather than age, and can include as many as 15-20 players, who can participate in one of three levels: Minor League, intermediate League or Major League. Challenger League will plays at their new home at the Miracle Field of the Quad Cities located in Prairie Heights Park in Davenport.
